Episode 1

Trapped!

WAAAAAH! Somebody haaaaaalp! That came from the outskirts of the garden! SOMEBOOOOODY! Hey, are you okay?! Hey there, buddy! Gimme a hand? I got caught in this weird net thingie and now I can't move. Hmm... That's actually a rather clever trap. I wonder who set it there? Uh, maybe help me out before you try to reverse engineer it or whatever? Just toss me my axe—I dropped it over there when this thing snagged me. Er, all right. But how are you going to cut through the net when you're also caught inside it? Just leave it to me! Hyaah! Freedom! Okay, that was pretty impressive. Nya ha ha! Yeah, when it comes to axes, ol' Yue is definitely the best around. I take it your name is Yue, then? Well, it's nice to meet you, Yue. My name is Euden. If you don't mind me asking, what are you doing this deep in the woods? I was chasing a wild boar. It was big and fat and meaty and delicious and just...so...mmmmrrraaaagh.... Anyway, when it went out to that field to eat some veggies, I leapt to the attack! And THAT'S when that stupid trap caught me. Booo! Perhaps I hid my trap a little TOO ingeniously. Wait, Cleo? YOU made this trap? I actually had Luca and Ranzal make it for me, but I did hang it there. A wild boar has been making a mess of the vegetable garden lately. Wait. Hold the carrier pigeon. I fell into YOUR boar trap?! Nya ha ha! That's hilarious! Still, I think you can rest easy now. Wild boars are easily frightened, so they won't go near places that feel dangerous. And since I scared it off just now, it should leave your veggies alone. You sure know a lot about boars. Yeah, my people are all over it when it comes to critters. Hunting and traveling is pretty much what we do! Oh man, all that fighting with the net has made my tummy rumbly. Well, perhaps Cleo can do something about that noisy belly of yours. I would be happy to prepare something. Wait, really?! REALLY?! It was my trap that ensnared you, so a meal is the least I can do. It's also a chance to thank you for driving off that wild boar. Right then. Let's do this. Augh! SO good! The meat is delicious, and the bread's so...FLUFFY! *chomp* *munch* *horf* *drool* *slurp* That's...quite the eating style. I can't believe you made such a tasty meal so quickly, Cleo! When you cook for a castle of people every day, preparing a meal for one is a rather simple task. Every day... Wait, so if I work at your castle, I can eat like this EVERY day?! GIVE ME A JOB RIGHT NOOOW! C'mon, Prince! Hire me! I'll do whatever! I can fight fiends AND gather food; I'm a real double threat! We'd be happy to have you join us, Yue. Then just leave your problems to me. I'll protect you from scary fiends AND empty bellies!

Hungry Hunters

Mmm, something smells good! I'm making a meat pie from the deer you caught recently. Ooo! I've never had a meat pie. But I'm sure it'll be delicious if you're the one making it, Cleo. Mmmm, so good! Meat pie is the best! Hey! How come the new kid's sittin' in the hall chowin' down all by herself?! She eats so much, it just seemed easier that way. For a tiny person, she can really pack it away. The hell?! Eatin' like a hog is MY shtick! I've even been skippin' second lunches to try and keep costs down around here! It's not good to be hungry, Ranzal. You should eat more! I told ya, I'm tryin' to help out on costs! Well, that's just silly. Instead, I challenge you to an old-fashioned eating contest! If we're competing, you can eat whatever you want and not feel guilty about it. Bwaaa ha ha! Ya got guts to challenge the belly of ol' Ranzal, kid. You're on! You may feel confident now, but I once ate a bear. Like, the WHOLE bear. Fur and everything. Oh yeah? Well, I once cleared out the entire winter storehouse of a village and got banned for life! ...Heh. Classic.

All right, we'll start with these dishes. Just what I was hopin' for! Hraaargh! *gulp* *chew* *snorf* *rip* Cleo! Bring the next one! More here! MORE! I must request that the two of you practice at least a LITTLE moderation!

Ahem. Last night, the two of you plowed through a week's worth of food stores. I'm so ashamed... Urgh... If you truly regret what you've done, head to town and purchase enough chicken to replace what you ate. Yes, ma'am. We don't have to go to some village shop, Ranzal—I'll just catch some feathered friends here in the woods. If we spot any wild chickens, I'll show you what I can do! I ain't never heard of a wild... Wait, hang on. Some old feller in the dining hall might have mentioned somethin' about that, actually. He said there's a wild chicken breed called a "buhkawk." Apparently they're pretty fierce, so no one bothers tryin' to catch 'em. Supposed to be real tasty though. And that old timer claimed to have heard the call of the buhkawk on this very trail. Niiice. Hey, we never did determine a winner in our eating competition, did we? So howzabout whoever catches the wild chicken is declared the winner? Bwaaa ha ha! I love yer moxie, kid! It's a date! Or a dare. Or whatever it is. Them birds are supposedly pretty damn huge, so one oughta be more'n enough. And if it's as tasty as you say, Cleo will definitely be happy. So I think that chicken is supposed to be around here somewhere... Buhkawk... Looks like we won't be waiting long! Let the competition commence!

Nya ha ha! Eat my dust, old man! Hold up there, you! Buhkaaaawk... Ah! It's behind that big rock! (You bring big prey down with one strike so I need to quieeeetly sneak up on it. And when I've closed the distance...) Hyaaah! BUH-KAAAAWK?!?! ...Huh?! ...... You all right, kid?! Ranzal... BRAAAAAWK! That's no chicken! Uwaaaah! Baaaawk! It's just a fiend what SOUNDS like a chicken! ...Which is super weird, actually. But whatever! Buhkawk? Buhkaaaaawk... Look how many there are! We better put our little competition on hold until we clean up this mess, yeah? Or we CHANGE the competition to see who can kill the most fiends! I knew I liked ya, kid. Let's do it! You'll never beat me! Hyaaaah!

Kid, when I first saw ya, I thought ya were just some pipsqueak, but now I see yer the real deal. Guess I can't go around judgin' folks by their appearances. And I can see what a good person you are just from fighting at your side. Heh. Nya ha ha! I'm sorry to interrupt this little bonding exercise, but... Did you get so absorbed in this hunting trip that you forgot your shopping trip? Er... So ashamed... *sigh* I suppose that's that. Hah! Y-yeah! No use crying over spilt milk and all that! Yes. Since I cannot make enough for everyone, the two of you will have to go without dinner tonight. Perhaps you should just turn in early. It's been...quite the day. C-Cleo, wait! Stooop! Uuuurgh... So...hungry... C'mon, kid. Time to get walkin'. We'll find our dinner somewhere else. And hey, it's my treat. Wait. You're buying me dinner? Yeah, ya look like real a broke joker. Eating Your Fears

WAAAUGH! What's wrong, Cleo?! O-over there! Er, you mean this pot? Agh, n-no! If you open the lid...! Huh? WAAAUGH! Noooo! You're letting them OOOUT! Ack! Hold on, I'll catch 'em! Okay, I think that's all of them. But who put all those frogs there in the first place? All I know is that it's an absolutely malicious trick to play on someone. Aw, Cleo! Did you look in the pot already? It was supposed to be a surprise! Wait, YOU did this?! Of course! I even caught 'em myself. ...Yue? I prepare meals for everyone here in this kitchen. It is my sanctuary. My oasis. And if you are going to play pranks like some foul devil, then you are hereby banned from my kitchen for life! Wait, are you MAD at me?! This wasn't a devil trick, I swear! I worked really hard to catch all those frogs for you! Huh? You're mean, Cleo! I hate you! ...... As weird as this sounds, I think she honestly thought you'd enjoy the frogs. Let me go talk to her. Wait here, okay? Cleo, you dummy... *sniffle* You're such a stupid-head! Hey there, Yue. Hey, Euden... Talk to me about the frogs. I know how to make a super tasty frog casserole and I was gonna surprise Cleo by making it but she's a big stupid-face and so now I totally don't wanna! Everyone in my tribe LOVES my frog casserole, and I thought it would make Cleo happy. But instead she's just all mad... Frog...casserole? Er, I mean, that's a very nice thought, Yue. But Cleo just misunderstood—she thought you were playing a prank on her. See, Cleo actually hates frogs. Whaaat?! Who hates FROGS?! They're so tasty and easy to catch! That's, um... Well, I guess different people just like different things sometimes. And since Cleo hates frogs, she instantly thought someone was playing a mean prank on her. If you clear up the misunderstanding, I'm sure the two of you can make up. So let's head back to the kitchen, okay? Yeah, okay... ...Wait. So you were actually going to cook the frogs for me as a surprise? Yeah. I wasn't trying to scare you, and I'm really sorry if I did. I think I am the one who needs to apologize here. Huh? I let myself become angry without fully understanding the situation. Disliking frogs is my issue, and I took it out on you. Thus, I was in the wrong, and for that, I am sorry. Waaaaaah! CLEOOOOOO! Please refrain from leaping on me. Ha ha! Looks like you're friends again. Although I have to say, Cleo, I had no idea you hated frogs so much. I'm not proud, but I've been terrified of the creatures for as long as I can remember. Well, the next time frogs show up, I'll totally protect you! That's very reassuring, thank you. Oh, but wait! There's MORE! I'm gonna figure out a way for you to enjoy my famous frog casserole! Uh... That is...absolutely not necessary. I know you're scared of them, but a frog casserole totally can't hurt you! I think you misunderstand my objection to this plan. I mean, fiends are also scary. But I bet if you threw 'em in a pot and boil 'em for a few days, they'd get sorta edible. I'm going to turn your worst nightmare into your favorite casserole! That is COMPLETELY unnecessary!

Episode 4

Field Training

Damn. We're good and lost now. In that case, let's set up camp here before the sun goes down. Right. I'll go track down some firewood. Ooo! I haven't been camping in forever! You were traveling and hunting before you came to us, right? Yep! Then I camped every day, which was great. I'm still not used to the beds you have in the castle—they're so soft and scratchy and...blech! I fear I have some bad news regarding our current provisions... ...So we're running low on water? That's gonna make things tight. We also lack a tent or any other shelter. Nya ha ha! That's no problem at all! I'll teach you how to set up a camp like my tribe does. We'll do it hunter-style! Let's start with the bed. We need to dig a hole big enough for the four of us, then fill it with grass. Then we poke a few tree branches into the ground and hang cloth from them like so... Ta-daaa! One tent, ready for a pack of intrepid campers! Whoa. That actually worked. I'm stunned. No time to stand around gawking at my awesomeness! Night's gonna fall soon. Next, we need water. Aaaand soooo... Ah, there we go. Er, why are you pulling all the vines from that tree? Do we need rope? Nope! See, this tree accumulates water. And if you cut the vines and stick them in the mouth of your canteen like so... Hey! Fresh water! That's the idea! C'mon, let's fill up the remaining canteens. I'm back with enough firewood to roast a pig! ...Not that we got one. Thanks, Ranzal. We've just finished up our preparations as well. Saaay! For bein' an improvised campsite, this place looks plenty comfy. Indeed. We should have no problems making it through the night now. And it's all thanks to Yue. Nya ha ha! More praise! More, I say! Enough chatter—let's get a fire goin' before my toes freeze off! How do you have such a working knowledge of nature, Yue? I was wondering the same thing. Does every member of your tribe know these skills, or are you a special case? Oh, we all know SOME survival skills, but my family was always the best at it. We'd always roam the farthest and seek out the most dangerous game. Sometimes we'd be gone for days or even weeks, so knowing how to camp was a huge priority. Sounds like your family was the most formidable of an already formidable group of people. Yeah, my parents were both amazing. *sniff* I still miss 'em a bunch. Miss them as in homesick? Or miss them as in... No, they're both dead. They were attacked by an entire herd of angry beasts a little while back. That's terrible! It IS terrible. I'm so sorry, Yue. I don't think it's terrible, actually. My people hunt. And if you hunt, of course you sometimes also get hunted. So while I do MISS them terribly, I also understand why things are how they are. I see. My parents are one with the land now. And that's why, so long as I live here on this earth, I'll never be alone! Yer really somethin', kid. Ya know that? I dunno if I've ever met anyone who has that kind of strength. Here we were thinkin' yer life story was this grim tragedy! But I guess it's all about perspective, eh? Your tribe's connection with the land would make its people quite strong indeed. But it's not just your parents who are with you, Yue—we are as well. Aw! Thanks, Euden! *yawn* All this talking has me bushed! I'm gonna go get some shut-eye. Good night, Yue. You all get some sleep too, okay? Rest is important in a survival situation. Zzz... Wow! She's already asleep! I've never seen the like. Yue's as tough as they come, but she still looks like a little kid when she's all conked out like that. One could easily mistake her for a guileless, innocent child. And yet she's lived a life most of us will never understand. Zzz...

Dine and Dash

All right! This'll be perfect! Yue, may I have a moment? Sure! What's up? It's about the fiends we took down recently. I was wonder... Huh? Why do you look like you're packing for a journey? Because it's time for me to go! Wait, you're leaving the Halidom?! Yep. See, if you hunt for too long in the same location, all the game there will eventually disappear. So my people always move on to a new site before that happens. This all seems very sudden. Does Cleo know your plans? Actually, I was sorta hoping to slip out in the night without a whole lot of fuss. I don't think I could go if I had to look Cleo in the eyes and say good-bye. Are you sure you have to go, Yue? We'll all miss you terribly. Cleo especially. Look, it's not like I won't be sad either! But it's just that... I mean... Euden! There you are! What's wrong, Ranzal? We got fiends in the nearby village! Got it. We'll head out right away. I'm coming! Are you sure? Of course! We'll get rowdy one last time as thanks for everything you've done for me.

Graaargh! Looks like that was the last one. Thanks for the help, Yue. ...... Yue? Look at this place. It's a disaster! The trees and the grass are shredded, and the animals are all hurt! When fiends attack, they destroy everything around them. Hmm...

I am pleased you made it back safely. Thanks, Cleo—and thanks for keeping an eye on things here in the castle. Welcome back to you as well, Yue. ...... What is it, Yue? You're awfully quiet. *sigh* You probably got so rough and rowdy that you're hungry, yes? Guys, listen... What is it? If fiends continue rampaging here, the woods are going to die. Then the animals will vanish, and then... Well, then everyone will be hungry! I can't let that happen! Right now, the most important thing is to stop the fiends. ...Right? That's right. Fiends aren't a part of nature. Leaving them unchecked could be disastrous. Right? So, then... I mean, I really shouldn't but...and maybe you'll think I'm just sad to leave, but... I mean, I AM sad! But I also need to leave...but... Urrrgh! This is so frustrating! Fine! I'll stay here and fight fiends with all of you! Is that okay, Euden? Or is it a mistake? No, Yue. It's not a mistake. You told me about how important it was not to stay too long in one place, but if there's something unnatural there harming everything, you have to destroy it. So will you stay and fight with us? You bet I will! I'm sorry, but what's going on here? Oh, um...nothing. It's all been sorted. Well, I suppose I'm glad if it's already been resolved, but... Not everything is resolved! There's something I want to say, Cleo. Yue? Er, all right? What is it? Well... FOOOOOOD! Huh? I'm SUPER hungry from fighting, and I WANT FOOOOOOD! *sigh* So this WAS about your bottomless stomach after all. Ha ha! That's very you, Yue. (Still, I'm glad she's staying...) Yep! A little chow after getting rough with the fiends is just what the hunter ordered! Wonder what's on the menu today? Nya ha!
