Episode 1

An Unexpected Arrival

The town is really starting to look like its old self again. It's true that the building repairs are almost complete... However, I fear the entire town still has a rather gloomy air. Well, they WERE just attacked by fiends; no one can blame people for feeling low. Buildings can be repaired, but alas, hearts are not so easily mended. I wonder if there's something we can do to cheer them... Hmm? What's that? Someone has collapsed on the ground! Are you all right?! Nghh... Can you talk? What happened?! Need...grub... Grub? Wait, do you think he collapsed out of hunger? I've been helping out at a nearby café. Let us take him there, quickly! *chomp* *horf* *slurp* I've never seen anyone eat so fast. He even puts Ranzal to shame! He must have been famished. That really hit the spot. I owe you two big time. We're just glad to see you up and well. But what were you doing lying on the ground to begin with? I heard a rumor about a town that was attacked by fiends. I started making my way there and must'a forgotten to eat. I wasn't aware eating was something one could simply "forget" to do. So far as I know, this is the only town in the area that's been attacked lately. Well, guess I made it safely. Nice. If you call ending up collapsed on the ground "safe," then yes. Meh. Details. Still, what drove you to come here and— I've made up my mind! Huh? That came from outside. I'm begging you! Please reconsider! No, I'm leaving this town, and that's that! Fiends have already come for us once, so who's to say they won't do it again?! But all people keep talking about is how safe and prosperous Chanzelia is! What's wrong with wanting to live somewhere you can feel safe? But ever since those fiends came, this town's population has been shrinking by the day. At this rate, it's only a matter of time before we dry up and blow away! Please, you must stay here and help get our town back on its feet! Nothing you say will change my mind. I'm outta here. Er, is everything all right? Ah, Your Highness. My sincere apologies for disturbing you with all of that. It sounds like that man is leaving? Him and many others besides, I fear. I understand how they feel, but if everyone leaves, this town has no future. We're SO close to rebuilding everything! I got this. Er, you got...what? Do you have some manner of plan? I sure do: We're gonna have a FESTIVAL! A...festival. Yep! Oh, the name's Yaten, and I'm a festival planner from over in Hinomoto. I've been traveling around and livening up towns with festivals for a long while now. You do that? As in, for a career? Yep! Look, people leave towns because they don't feel like they have a future there, right? My festivals are all about giving people hope in their hometown again. Huh. That actually sounds promising. Nothing brings light to the world like a good festival! Please, sir! You must arrange one of these hope festivals with all speed! If you really think this will work, you're welcome to use our castle as your base of operations. You guys royalty or something? This man is a prince of Alberia. He rules over a castle in the Mistholt. I'll be happy to help however I can. Huh. You're a real big shot. Then will you plan a festival for us? Sure, why not? It'll be a kick in the... Huh? Someone's coming. Where the hell have you BEEN, Yaten?! Yaten's Partner Natalie You're here just in time, Natalie. Because guess what... IT'S FESTIVAL TIIIME! Huh? Huh? Why'd you say the same thing as me? Guess we're just on the same wavelength. Well, you're right—the boss man here asked me to throw together a festival. Then let's make it a festival these folks ain't never gonna forget! Ha! This burg's gonna be up and full of life in no time!

Growing Suspicions

Good morning, Cleo. Say, have you seen Yaten anywhere? I can't find him. No, he wasn't in his room this morning. But he's such a hard worker, it wouldn't surprise me if he got a jump on the day. He's a real pro, all right. I can't wait to see the next thing he comes up with. Agreed. ...Hmm? Er, I'm sorry for disturbing you both so early in the day, but there is a matter that we need to discuss. Of course. How can we help? Well, I'm having second thoughts about whether I should allow Yaten to plan our upcoming festival. Oh? Why is that? ...I can't believe that Yaten is napping and slacking around town all day! He seemed so serious about the festival before. The mayor appeared taken aback as well. Still, there's only one way for us to ascertain the truth, and that is by asking Yaten directly. And speak of the devil! ...... He really IS napping! ...Also, he looks VERY comfortable on that bench. No wonder the mayor was concerned. We'd best go wake him up. Hold on. It's possible he's just resting because he's been working since the sun first came up. Let's wait a while longer and see what he does next. I find your optimism almost charming, but very well... ...... I fear Yaten shows no signs of moving from his comfortable bench. I suppose you're right. We've given him enough of a chance. Let's march over there and—Oh! He woke up! So he WAS just resting! I don't think we can conclude that until we actually see him doing some WORK. Let us follow him and see what happens. Gimme the usual. Of course, sir! One salted-meat sandwich and lentil soup, coming right up! He appears to be getting lunch. Well, he really wolfed that down. Let's see where he goes next! I'm so happy to see you again, Yaten! Can't get enough of the meat you got here. Now, what should I get today...? How many stops does this make? Umm, I think this is five? This is no manner of work that I am familiar with. He's merely ambling around the town, stopping only to talk and eat! Yes, but... Hrmm... ...... SURELY he's going to start working soon. Hold on. Is this not the park where we first saw him this morning? *yawn* Guess I should hit the hay. I cannot watch this idiocy a second longer! Don't stop me, Euden! Cleo, wait! What do you think you are doing, Yaten?! Wow, Cleo. You look pretty riled up. Do not "Wow, Cleo" me! You told us you were going to bring life back to this town with a festival! Yet here you are sitting idly about! Hey, I've been working. You have spent the entire day napping, talking, and cramming various foodstuffs into your gaping maw! That is NOT work! Wait, are you following me? The mayor came to us to share his... concerns about your work ethic. So we decided to follow you and see if his worries were justified—which they most CLEARLY are, you slugabed! Stalking someone isn't nice. Also, I really WAS working. Horsefeathers, sir! HORSEFEATHERS! No. Really. That's how I work. I'm amazed you can afford the amount of meals you eat if you consider that "work." Oh, I eat for free. How is that even possible?! Excuse me there, but are you Prince Euden? Yes, that's me. I was informed that you're footing the bill for all of Yaten's meals, correct? WHAAAAA?! You there! Prince! I need you to pay off Yaten's tab before I go broke! WHAAAAAA?! Have you been eating for free all this time by saying the prince will pay for your meals?! Now I understand why we never saw him hand over any money for his food. You said you'd help however you could, right? Can't take that back now. Anyway, I gotta get back to wor— YAAAATEEEEN! Aw, hell. It's Natalie. Stop goin' around causin' trouble! Also, why the hell ain't you been checkin' in with me?! You don't need me to watch your every move. I know you got this. Yeah, but there are things *I* wanna talk to *you* about. Now get over here! Hey! You're gonna yank my arm off! What was THAT about? She did make quite the entrance. Still, I think we can leave him to her. Soooo about that money... *siiigh*

A Man of Two Extremes

Just five more minutes... Ya been sayin' that for an hour, jerkface! Now GET UP ALREADY! Noooooooooooo! Um, what's going on here? Sorry, Princey! Just tryin' to get Captain Idiot here outta bed. Anyway, I'm gonna head into town. Don't keep me waitin'! Are you sick, Yaten? You look unwell. Nah, I'm just tired. Just lemme sleep for a bit here. Oh. Of course. (Wow, is he STILL not up? It's noon!) (He used to leave the castle at the crack of dawn, but lately he's been sleeping in more and more often.) Uh oh, guys! We got a problem! What's wrong, Notte? A huge argument just broke out between Natalie and the townspeople! We'd better check it out! Hang on. I'm coming. When did YOU get up?! The little wing lady woke me with all her caterwauling. Now come on. Let's go. As if an outsider like you can do anything to help our town! A festival is the last thing we need! Now get out of here and leave us be! Wouldja all shut up for a hot second and LISTEN TO ME ALREADY?! Nothing you can say is worth hearing! Honestly, I have no idea what the mayor was thinking when he brought you on. Our first priority should be ensuring the town is properly defended from fiends, not THIS utter nonsense. Oh, forget it. This town is a lost cause, and everyone here knows it! What was that?! Ah, hell. Now you're fightin' each OTHER?! Stay out of this, outsider! SAY THAT AGAIN, PUNK! Everybody just slow your damn rolls for a minute! Sheesh! What are you all doing here?! Standing around carping like this is just gonna tire everyone out. So let's be adults and TALK. And what would you have us "talk" about?! How about the reason behind holding a festival? There isn't one. Case closed! I didn't suggest that your mayor hold a festival without a reason, you know? So look, protecting the town is important. No one wants fiends attacking it again. And that is why— But! How are folks supposed to come together and protect it without unity? Unless you lot think you're tough enough to go at everything alone? Well... Fortunately, the town's almost back to normal, which means a festival is a great chance to celebrate that AND bring everyone together. You follow? A good, cheery festival where everyone speaks their minds is the perfect place to put together plans to get this town back on its feet again. And look, as long as the prince is here, you guys know you're safe—so why not give this festival a chance? Still, the thought of letting an outsider organize a festival for us is... Well, THIS outsider's got it all covered. Wait, is this the plan for the festival? Ah! This is a list of our town's traditional arts and crafts! He's using them to decorate the town and the stalls. It's impressive work for an outsider, I'll give him that. Eh, you pick it up pretty quick if you just hang around and keep your ears open. Wait a second. So you actually WERE working this whole time?! You weren't just eating and talking— you were actually learning about this town's customs and culture. Hmm... It says here you're planning to use gold decorations on the floats? That's one of your traditional designs, right? Seems perfect for a float. It's a fine idea, but who will make it? All of our artisans have already left. I got you covered. ...Here. Whoa! This is... All I did was copy other people's work. Still, I think it turned out all right. I'm sorry, but you cannot simply pass off an imitation as the real thing. It is an insult to both the town and our artisans. ...Which is why I will teach you to craft these items for REAL. Ha! Sounds like there's at least one artisan who stuck around! You're on, pal. I can't stand around and do nothing when an outsider's doing this much to help us. I agree. We at least owe it to you to see this festival out. Well, that was a lot of effort, but I'm glad it all worked out. *yawn* Glad I didn't stay up making that for nothing. Is that why you've been so tired lately? I TOLD ya not to work nights, dummy! It makes ya too tired to work in the DAY! Guess I'm just nocturnal. Anyway, if we're done here, I'm starving. Ya better not stick the meal on someone else's tab this time! I honestly can't tell if he's got it together or is actually a complete mess. I KNOW, right?!

Episode 4

The Planner's Promise

All the stalls are ready, Yaten! Nice. Then go help Natalie prep the floats. Yaten, I've thought of some new dishes for the festival. Would you care to try them? Sure thing. I'll be along in a while. Yaten! The florist's new work is finished! I'm sure it looks great. Well, the festival is almost upon us. Anticipation for it seems to have made the town much livelier. Maybe that's why more and more people have been volunteering to help lately. Yep. This is gonna be one for the books, so look forward to— Fiends! We've got fiends incoming! What?! I saw them from the lookout tower! They're still a ways away, but it's only a matter of time before they arrive! Just when life was getting back to normal! We only survived by the skin of our teeth last time—now they'll finish the job! Calm down, everyone! I can't believe it's come to this... Can you help everyone evacuate into the castle, Euden? Of course. But what are YOU going to do? I got my own job here in town. You aren't planning to flee? I promised the folks here they'd have the best festival around. I can't let 'em down after getting their hopes up like that. Staying alive is more important than some festival, you fool! Which is why you should get out of here. If I wanna be a fool, that's my business. But if I can protect the town while protecting the festival, all the better. Wait... You really just want to protect the town, don't you?! Get 'em out of here already, Euden! Move it! I want to fight, too! Get outta here, kid! I'm looking forward to the festival, and I'm gonna fight to save it! You have my steel as well! This is my home—I can't turn tail and run while an outsider risks his life for us. I agree—we can't just throw away all the progress we've made up to now. I won't let our home be destroyed again! Well, I'll be damned... You've made me realize this town meant more to me than I thought. My food stall is here, as well as decades worth of family recipes. We can't let those damn fiends take anything else from us! Right then. All of you stay here and keep the fiends from entering town and wrecking our festival stalls. Me and Natalie'll go meet the enemy outside the gates. You ready, Natalie? I was BORN ready! At least this way the town should avoid being caught in the crossfire. Let's finish 'em here and now. Don't need to tell me twice! I couldn't agree more. That's my ma—Wait, what the hell are YOU doing here, Euden?! The townsfolk asked me to help you. They seem to have their defenses well in hand, so I agreed. I thought all them town types were a buncha cowards, but they came through! You really unified everyone, Yaten. Nah, it wasn't me. All I did was remind everybody what the town means to 'em. I put together a festival to fill 'em with hope for their town's future... And we won't let some fiend mess it up! Then let's keep the town safe! Fiends at twelve o'clock, guys! Ha ha! There's nothing like a good fight to get a festival started!

Episode 5

A Festive Miracle

...... Are you asleep, Yaten? Hell no. Who sleeps during a festival? I was just listening to the music and the chatter. ...It's nice. Everyone's really enjoying themselves. I'm glad we could pull this off. I never do a job that isn't perfect. I can see that. Did you actually doubt me? Maybe a bit—what with the eating and napping and all. But clearly I was wrong. You know, I bet people would trust you more readily if you showed the same enthusiasm you do for festivals for other kinds of work. Yeah, but I only wanna work when there's a festival involved. Ha! That certainly sounds like you. ...Say, can I ask you something? Why did you become a festival planner? Hm. Well. What's the dark to you? Uh, sorry. What? See, to me, the dark is terror. It's scary as hell. I was abandoned in the mountains as a kid, and on that first night alone, it got dark like I never knew existed. I figured I was gonna die all alone in that dark...until a festival planner saved me. I have to admit, that's one of the more unusual origin stories I've ever heard. My rescuer came from a village of festival planners, so that's where I was raised. The place was always full of happiness and life. It...changed me. I found I wasn't scared of the dark if there was a lantern or three around to light up people's faces. There IS something special about a festival at night. I learned that a festival is a sorta miracle, and swore to bring that to everyone. So why did you leave Hinomoto? Figured it was only a matter of time before I was made the village leader. And you...didn't want to do that? I'm no leader. Besides, Hinomoto's got loads of folks who know how to put on a good festival. But the rest of the world doesn't know what it's missing. If there are folks who don't even know what a festival IS, it's a waste of my talents not to show 'em. That's a pretty amazing tale. Nah. I'm just living how I wanna. THERE they are! Hey, aren't you the kid who told the mayor he was leaving and never coming back? Yes, but I changed my mind—and I wanted the two of you to know first. What brought this about? I spent tonight talking to old friends and eating snacks from my childhood and... Well, I guess it just reminded me how much I love this town. This isn't just some place to live. It's my HOME. That's good to hear. Sort of embarrassing how it took a festival to remind me of that, but there it is, I guess. I mean, what good is a home if the people who live there don't protect it? Damn straight—although you've also got this prince here to help you out. That's right. If you're ever in danger, you can always count on us. I hope I never have to take you up on that. Anyway, my friends are waiting, so... Have fun at the festival. Seems like the mayor has nothing to worry about. Festivals really are miracles. 'Course they are! Why else would a lazy idiot like me spend so much time on 'em? I wonder if you'd be willing to put a little something together for the castle? We have a lot of refugees there, many who have suffered great loss. I think you'd be just the person to lighten their hearts a little bit. Okay, but you'll have to pay me— and don't say I owe you because of all the meals you bought! Heh. I'm happy to pay you, Yaten. Then it's a deal. Hell, if I stick with you, I'll probably run into all kinds of folks who need the power of a festival to lift their spirits. And whenever I take a job, I always deliver the best!
