Episode 1

One Thousand Victories

Crap, it's Yachiyo! Ruuuun! Well, ain't that a real flat soda! Why's everybody got to hotfoot it the moment they see me? ...Hmm? You there! Pal! You a swordsman? Um...technically, I suppose? I knew it! You look like a cat what really knows his way around a blade. In that case, I challenge you to a duel. ....C'mon, ya gotta! Ya just gotta! Sorry, what? Uh, boss? Don't wanna worry ya or nothin', but I think that's Yachiyo. I take it that's not a good thing? I've heard tales. Apparently she's been wanderin' the area asking' everybody she sees what to duel her. That big side'a beef next to you really knows his onions. Now draw your blade! Hold on, time out! I have no reason to fight you. Oh, I'll give you a reason, pal... I'm gonna win a thousand duels and become the strongest warrior in the entire world! I wasn't aware that was the process. My grandpappy taught me the art of the sword, and he says it's true as a new fence on an open range! Er, I'll assume that's very true. Still, it's quite the lofty goal. I've been traveling the world giving palookas the business for a while now. But once I achieved my 900th victory, everything went goldfish bellies. You've defeated NINE HUNDRED people?! Sure, but that's small potatoes! I gotta defeat a thousand of 'em or it don't mean squat. But now everybody hits the skids the moment I show my face in town. Hell, I'd probably turn and run from some crazy swordswoman who took out nine hundred fighters before gettin' to me. I ain't never gonna be the strongest if no else is willing to put up their dukes. That's why I need you to fight me! Now come on, already! Stop being such a damp rug and let's do this thing! I told you, I'm not fighting you. But you just said you'd fight if I gave ya a reason! You gave me YOUR reason for fighting. That's all well and good for you, but I still have no reason to fight. Look, I'm older than you, yeah? So respect your elders and fight! If I can't get nobody to dance, I'm gonna lose all my moxie. And then? ...Poof! My goal will be six feet under! I think we've taken this conversation about as far as it's gonna go. Let's split, Euden. Wait just a sec. Euden? I know that handle! You're the seventh heir to the throne! The prince what's always fightin' for the sake of others! Um, yeah. That's me, I guess. Right then. I'm joinin' up. The hell you is! You've got plenty of angry joes who want your head, yeah? And that' means I'LL have plenty of angry joes to fight! It's an endless supply of goons! Now hold on! Ya can't just— All right. You're in. Did someone drop you on yer head? It won't be ten minutes before this lady's challengin' ya to a duel again! And if I leave her alone, she'll challenge someone else instead. Tsk! You really are a soft touch. So then, Yachiyo, you're welcome to come with us—but I have a condition. Until you duel me, you're not allowed to duel anyone else. Are we agreed? Well, that's a real raw steak of a deal! ...Still, I suppose it beats pounding the pavement lookin' for mopes to fight. Fair enough. Count me in!

Episode 2

Determined to Duel

Hey there, pal! Ready to cross blades yet? I appreciate your resolve in challenging me to a duel literally every single day, but we still have no reason to fight. You're the real bum side of a knuckle, you know that? I figured you woulda said yes by this time just for kicks. Next time I'll just ask when you first wake up so you're all groggy... Heh heh heh! Er, you should probably try to keep your evil schemes as internal monologues. I ain't schemin'! I'm strategizin'! Still, it sounds like you haven't been challenging anyone else, so I'm glad you're keeping that promise. I ain't no welsher! Never have been! Plus, you're the only cat I wanna fight now. Why me? I've encountered plenty of warriors in my days, yeah? But I ain't never met one like you. You got charm to spare, and it brings folks runnin' to your side. Hell, even dragons think you're the bee's knees! I've taken on plenty of folks what knew how to swing a sword, but I ain't never battled someone like you. So if we fight, I'll bet gold to garters that I learn something swell! Well, I'm happy you think so highly of me. But a duel is just so...extreme. Well, how does this strike you? If you agree to duel me, I'll throw in a nifty bonus! Oh, this should be good... You know it, pal! If you agree to duel with me now, you'll get... The chance to duel me again! For FREE! I'll pass, thanks. Aw, come on! Don't be such a flat tire! That's a sweet steal of a deal! ...Fine. You can fight me TWO more times. Hell, make it three! I'm feelin' generous! I don't even want to duel you once. You're really steamin' my bunions here, you know that?! Whenever some sap in town offers up two-for-one apples, folks practically knock each other over what to get at 'em! Ha ha ha! Keep laughin', pal. We'll see what's what. I ain't gonna force you to fight me, but I ain't gonna give up, neither! I appreciate that. Still, I can't just swing on the porch waitin' for you to find your guts. Everybody else in this castle is a true chum of yours, yeah? That's right. So you all think and feel the same? One mind shared among many? Where are you going with this? I'm going here: If you're all one person, that's means I can duel ANY of you and not break my promise! That doesn't make ANY sense!

Looking for a Loophole

Hey there, Euden! I had Cleo teach me the way around a stove and made you a little something. She has been working on it since early this morning, so I do hope you'll try some. Now open up your trap, 'cause heeeere comes the dragon! I think I can eat on my ow—MUUURF! Well? How's that strike you? It was good, yeah? Real cat's pajamas! Um... It was... It waaaas... Ahem. She DID pour her heart and soul into the crafting of it. Regardless of the end result. Uh oh. Are you hoppin' the trolley to Upchuck City? Give it to me straight! Oh no, it's not that! It's...um... Actually, it's...good. It is? Well, slap me sideways and call me the mayor! But what made you want to cook for me out of the blue like thi— Well, Euden! In return for that wonderful grub, you can take me on in a duel! I should have seen this coming. Hey! You can't give me the icy mitt after I fed you like a king! ...Ah, hell. I suppose one meal ain't enough to get a duel outta you. You about to hop in the ol' rub-a-dub, Euden? If so, lemme scrub your back! That is REALLY not necessary. Aw, applesauce! You can't scrub your back by your lonesome, so why not let me do you a solid? Because the moment you're done, you'll ask for a duel in return. Sweet lindy hop! How'd ya know?! I think anyone could tell at this point. Dammit! I really left the road on that one. Fine then! What do you say I tuck you in and serenade you with a lullaby tonight? I know a real corker of a bedtime tune! ...Oh my gal, she's a real fine gal, she— Yachiyo, stop. Why are you so obsessed with making this duel happen? I mean, you could DIE. Yeah? What of it? I mean, sure, I'd rather come out on top, but we all gotta smack the dirt sometime. At least if I keel over in a duel, I'm doing what I love. That's way better than dying all soft and cozy in a warm bed surrounded by friends and family! Look, I know you don't get me on this, but if I don't become the strongest warrior and end up wasting my life, I think that's WORSE than kickin' the bucket. I'd rather die a warrior than live as a hollow shell. I had no idea this meant so much to you. Well, it does. So NOW will you duel me, Euden? Don't let my dream die. All right. I understand. And I accept your challenge.

Episode 4

Friend and Warrior

Yesss! Duel time! I've been waiting for the chance to fight Euden for so long! Sure about this, Euden? After hearing how much it means to her, I don't want to let her down. I beg you to reconsider. I will be standing by in case you are injured, but a sudden, grievous injury could be beyond my care. I'm not going to die today, Cleo. I still have things I need to do. And I won't let Yachiyo die, either. But... I'm ready when you are, Yachiyo. Then step up to the blackboard, because you're gonna get schooled! I ain't waiting one tick longer! Urgh! All she did was draw her blade, and I already feel overwhelmed... Her aura is overpowering... I can barely breathe! Hot damn! She turned into a different person the moment her blade was out! I wouldn't want to go toe-to-toe with her, I'll tell ya that much. Her eyes are so cold... I can't believe this is the same Yachiyo who I taught to cook in my kitchen! Enough. Draw your sword. I won't attack someone whose blade is not at the ready. Let's do this, Yachiyo. I am prepared. I will END you! Yachiyo, stop! Don't get in the way, Cleo, or I can't be held responsible for the consequences. Are you seriously intending KILL him?! Yes. The duel is my life. How can you say that?! He's your FRIEND! Feelings have no role in battle. How can you just stop caring like that?! You've liked being here! You've had fun! ...Fun? I suppose much has happened since I came to this castle. I challenged the prince to a duel every single day. You taught me to cook. I even offered to step in and wash Euden's back. That was pretty weird, actually. ...Heh. You're right. I DID have fun. But when this fight ends, all of that will be over. That's... Aw, horsefeathers! I can't give all that up! Sorry, pal, but I think we're gonna have to put the kibosh on this duel. Cuttin' you down won't cut the mustard, and neither will cuttin' down your chums. Then... Don't get me wrong—I'm still keen to win a thousand duels and become the strongest warrior in the world. But I ain't willing to give my friends the high hat to make it happen. I'm very relieved to hear that. Me too! I'm a warrior, not some heartless killer. I'm PROUD of all the things my ol' grandpappy taught me. But maybe it's time to hit the bricks and have a think about what all this dueling stuff really means to me...

A New Challenge

You ready to duel, Cleo?! Uh oh... That sounds like Yachiyo. I wonder what she's up to? I'm gonna cut like never before! Oh no! Cleo's going to be killed! I have to stop this! Urgh... I can't believe I lost... How can this...beeee...? Told ya I was gonna cut like a madwoman! Yachiyo! What have you done?! Why do you look so flustered, Euden? I heard Yachiyo talking about a duel and came running, and then you were... Ha! Oh, I dueled the heck outta her; check out the dice on these onions! That's the cat's meow, and no mistake! You diced...onions? Yachiyo challenged me to a battle to see who was faster at dinner prep. I lost. ...Which is frankly rather depressing. So you DIDN'T duel, and Cleo ISN'T dying? There ya are, Yachiyo! I got yer challenge, and I'm ready to roll! You sure, pal? This won't be no cakewalk. Normally I'd say no way in hell, but I like yer stones, so I'll duel ya here and now! Ranzal, no! Can ya believe this scrawny thing challenged ME to an eatin' contest?! Bwaaaa ha ha ha! An EATING contest?! Ha! It takes more than a big gob and a flubbergut to win an eating contest! Bwaaa ha! I'll scarf down ten times what you eat in a week and come back for more! Wh-what is going on? ...Say, Yachiyo? Why are you going around asking everyone for duels lately? Because I'm trying to defeat a thousand people, remember?! Yes, but you seem to be going about it in something of a...different way. Well, after we went round and round— or tried to but couldn't, I suppose— I took some time and had a think. I started reconsidering what being the strongest warrior in the world meant, and how duels fit into that. All this time, I figured I had to defeat a thousand warriors in battle. But that ain't necessarily so— and you proved it. What did I do? You don't duel folks—it just ain't in your nature. Yet you're still stronger than me! Well, that's... Stow the modesty, chum! You're stronger, and I need to learn from you. But you just talked about how I have no dueling experience whatsoever. I said learn from you—not COPY you! You're strong because everybody else thinks you're a real fresh oyster. They trust you, yeah? If I wanna have trust like that, I gotta learn more about others— and have them learn about me. And that prompted your new "duels"? Best way to learn about a cat is to see what they're good at. So if I want people to know ME, it's gotta be through a duel! That actually makes sense. I can get behind that kind of duel! Then get ready for some real action, because I've got a whopper of a humdinger in store for you, pal!
