Episode 1

Managing Finances

You're welcome here in our castle from now on, Xiao Lei. My thanks, Euden. The group encountered Xiao Lei in the course of their journey. She is an arithmetician who has an unparalleled talent for calculation. The prince had a task to ask of her, and so brought her back to the Halidom. Ah, Xiao Lei! I have been waiting for you. Unfortunately, my work managing the finances of this castle is relentless. Such a large building and great number of people would certainly pose its share of fiscal challenges. I wager food and candle expenses alone would be enough to boggle the mind! I knew you would understand. I can't tell you what a relief it is to finally speak to someone about these matters. She's right—we've been completely depending on Cleo for this stuff from the moment we walked in the door. And on that note, I was...um...hoping you might be willing to help her out? An arithmetician never says no to a date with a ledger! My calculations will have this castle's financials thoroughly optimized before you can say "Piecewise Continuous Function!" I'm not sure I can say that regardless. But if you're willing to help, I'll have you take a look at the accounts right away. I practically drool at the thought. Now then! It looks like we have... 40,053... 82... Carry the 17... *clackity* *clackity* *scribble* What manner of magic is this?! How are you doing all these calculations so quickly?! It's all thanks to my abacus—a traditional tool from the land of Taiwu. Fascinating. So you can perform complex calculations just by moving all of those little balls around? I've never seen such an implement. ...Are you certain it's not magic? This invention changed the face of arithmetic in Taiwu. And since my hometown was based on the culture of Taiwu, the abacus was a natural part of my upbringing. Oh, and I noticed a few errors in your calculations while we were talking, so I went ahead and fixed them. ...Here you are! Goodness! Every column in this ledger has been perfectly arranged and sorted! It still looks like a big sheet of numbers to me, but it's definitely more detailed. Thank you, Xiao Lei. You really helped. Oh, there's no need for thanks. All I did was correct a few minor mistakes. The true rebirth of your ledger begins now. Behold the fundamentals of finance: Xiao Lei's Ten Articles of Austerity! First! Purchase all consumable goods at one time, and in bulk. Second! Purchase heavy goods locally to cut down on wasteful shipping fees. I'm learning so much! Oh, we're just getting started! Third... And so, the finances of the Halidom were given a thorough reassessment based on Xiao Lei's Ten Articles of Austerity. Whew! Oh man, I couldn't stop eatin'. That was some lip-smackin' grub, Cleo! And so many side dishes! I find myself satisfied in both body AND soul. It is all thanks to Xiao Lei. She helped me reassess the management of the castle, which gave us extra room in the budget for food. MARRY ME, XIAO LEI! LOVE WILL COME LATER! Heh. You're all more than welcome. How quaint to have an arithmetician in our ranks. We certainly are making some very unusual friends lately. We're glad to have you here, Xiao Lei. Oh, my work has only just begun. Where Did the Berries Go?

I won't be upset with you, Notte, but you have to tell me the truth. I AM telling the truth! It wasn't ME! Hmm? Are Cleo and Notte arguing? What's wrong, you two? Did something happen? It seems SOMEONE has put a serious dent in our berry supply. I was out of the kitchen for a little while, and when I returned, the berries had mysteriously grown legs and wandered off. You love berries, don't you, Notte? Admit it! It was you! I told you, NO! You gotta trust me! I'm not a big proponent of making emotionally-charged arguments based on trust or the lack thereof. Perhaps you might consider turning to the world's most reliable tool: numbers. What in the world does that mean? Fortunately, this is the kitchen, so I think we can just... Ah ha! Here it is. A scale? Wait, are you gonna use that thing to prove I didn't eat the berries? Correct! We are going to weigh you. If we suppose that Notte ate the berries, her mass ought to have increased by a commensurate amount. That does seem like a way to establish the truth with certainty. It's redemption time for ol' Notte! C'mon, Xiao Lei, let's do this thing. Er, wait. In order for this to work, don't we need to know Notte's original weight? Aw maaaan! I was THIS close to being able to rub it in Cleo's face. But we do have Notte's original weight; I took it last night while she was sleeping. In that case, we can just—HEY! WHAT THE HECK, MAN?! I know I should have asked, but I've never had a chance to determine the mass of an actual faerie before. Well, if it gets me off the hook for this whole berry thing, I guess I'll let it go. Just so. Now, onto the scale. Hup! Okay, ready? Weigh me! Now we add the counterweights, and then... Hmm? Your mass has increased since yesterday. Whaaat?! No way! You made a mistake! Numbers do not lie. Notte... I didn't do it! It wasn't meee! C'mon, you gotta believe me! I mean, I KNOW I like berries, and I DID horf down a bunch of 'em for breakfast this morning, but I DIDN'T steal any! Ah! In that case, this could be weight you gained from your breakfast. Notte, I must know exactly how many berries you consumed this morning. Umm...like, four? Maybe five? I wasn't exactly counting. Then let us suppose you consumed four and a half berries. If we assume the average weight of a single berry based on all of those which remain... Right then! We now know the weight of your breakfast. So if we subtract that from your current body mass... Eureka! Your weight is unchanged! And that means... What, exactly? She did not consume your missing berries. YESSS! IN YOUR FACE, CLEO! Oh, and thanks for the save, Xiao Lei. ...I'm sorry I doubted you, Notte. But in that case, who DID eat the... Er, did any of you hear that? It sounded like it came from beneath the table. GYAAAAH! ...Ladies. Look at his mouth! Those are stains! BERRY stains! Oh, crap! Uh, I mean...no they ain't! And I've totally NOT been hidin' under this table ever since Cleo came back! I was just, uh...tryin' to fix this wobbly leg! Yeah, that's it. Be quiet, you idiot man. You are going to stand there and listen to me as I pelt you with invectives, and you are going to ENJOY IT. Uh, Xiao Lei? Think maybe ya can use that weighin' trick on me? I refuse to use my beautiful numbers in an attempt to back up your pathetic lies. Now sit still and listen to Cleo's lecture! NOOOOOO! Episode 3

A Limitless Dream

...... Hmm. Xiao Lei has been staring at the sky for a while now. I wonder what's going on? Hey, Xiao Lei. Oh, Euden. You're staring off into space there. Is something wrong? Are you worried about something? You can talk to me if you need to. Not worried, just...thinking. About my dream. Care to tell me about it? You wouldn't understand if I told you. Er...but do you still want to know? Of course. I always want to know about things that are important to my friends. Fair enough. My dream is to explain the world in its entirety via calculation. You're right. I don't understand that. Heh. It's good of you to admit as much. Regardless, it is what drives me. May I tell you a story? It's a bit long, and has to do with my childhood. Please do. I was born to a merchant family who gave me an abacus in place of toys. Luckily, I rather enjoyed calculation, and soon I was spending my free time solving various problems I found in our family's library of mathematical books. I had no desire to go outside and play. So long as I could work with numbers, I was content. Oddly enough, that's the kind of childhood I imagined you having. But one day, I found I could no longer perform calculations. What happened? Unfortunately, I had solved every problem in the library. Ha! ...Er, sorry. I probably shouldn't laugh, but it IS a rather funny problem to have. No, I understand. However, it was quite serious to me, for I found myself wanting to take on ever more difficult problems. One day, I was staring out a window and thinking about my situation when a question suddenly struck me... ＂Just how far does the sky go?" At that moment, I realized something most incredible... I realized the world ITSELF was the greatest problem of all! And the questions about the world were not limited to the sky. Why is the ocean blue? From whence does mana come? One could spend their entire existence dedicated to the subject and barely scratch the surface of life's uncountable mysteries. This realization meant I could keep performing calculations for the rest of my days—that I could, in essence, be happy and content forever. I think I understand that. For you, never-ending calculations means never-ending happiness. That's exactly right! I can hardly believe you understand, but I'm glad I talked to you about it. Happiness takes different forms for different people, but we're all the same in that we chase after it. That is very wise, Euden. I'm truly glad I came here. And I'm happy to hear you say that. Still, solving all of the world's mysteries sounds like a gargantuan task. That's why I've set my sights on a singular goal to start. Does the sky stretch on and on forever? Or does it end somewhere in the beyond? The answer to that question— that impactful, challenging question— is also the answer to my dream. You've really thought this through. And I'll do whatever I can to help. Heh. Thank you, Euden. I'm delighted to hear you say that. And someday, I promise to reach the other side of this brilliant blue sky!

Episode 4

The Edge of the Sky

This is the end! Haaah! Graaaagh... That's the last of the fiends. Good job, everyone. Now all that remains is for us to make it to the town on the opposite side of these mountains. *pant* Um, perhaps...we might rest for a little while first? Yeah, I'm feelin' pretty toasty over here. I can understand Xiao Lei being tired, but Ranzal, you never get... Goodness! You look like you fell down the mountain! You ain't lookin' so hot yerself. Th-that is not... I would never... *pant* Pray forgive me, Your Highness! My training has clearly been wanting! Hey, I'm pretty beat myself. A break sounds like a good idea for everyone. Phew! At last, we stop. My poor body feels as if it's made of stone. I hear ya. Everything I do is makin' me feel like a furry dog on a hot day. This is odd. That wasn't a particularly challenging battle, and yet we are all exhausted. It's 'cause we fought on top of a mountain. Fightin' in high places always wears ya down—I learned that early on in my old mercenary days. Oh? Hmm. I wonder what the relationship is between one's physical stamina and fighting in elevated locations. Now that you mention it, the closer we get to the summit, the less I can feel mana in our surroundings. Perhaps mana is more scarce at higher elevations. But that would mean... Ah! Allow me to propose a theory. Mana surrounds us always, yes? But if we suppose it grows lesser in proportion with altitude... It would mean there is an "edge" where the sky finally ends! I do not follow. She's talking about her dream to measure the extent of the sky. Do you really think this might be a clue? Oh, it's more than a clue—it's an actual working hypothesis! Remember what Cleo said? The higher up we go, the greater the reduction in mana. So logically, if we go high enough, the mana should disappear completely. And I dare say we might find there a world where neither humans nor dragons could survive. In essence, the edge of the sky! And finding that is your dream, as the prince mentioned earlier? Is there somethin' GOOD about knowin' what's at this "edge of the sky" dealie? I can't say anything for certain, but... Ah! Perhaps you could learn something about the weather with this knowledge. Such as how the clouds are formed, which way they will move, and the like. Yes! We might be able to do that! How wonderful! A working knowledge of the weather would have applications for a great many things. ...Like laundry! W-well, we also might NOT be able to do that. Aw, c'mon! Ya can't go playin' with a man's emotions like that! You see, I do not seek to make practical USE of this knowledge. I simply wish to know the facts for their own sake. I wish to learn about the edge of the sky, and by doing so, the very world itself. Yeah, this is all way above my pay grade. And there's nothing wrong with that. Euden? Xiao Lei, you're trying to blaze a brand- new trail—one unknown to everyone. You're feeling your way along in the dark and don't know where the path will lead. And supposing it does lead somewhere, it's perfectly fine to leave the application of that information to someone else. I agree with His Highness. Heh. No surprise he's the one what's able to step back and see the big picture. I must admit, I now find myself most curious about this quest of yours. Thank you, everyone! Still, I don't even know if the sky DOES have an edge. This is all so very theoretical at this point, after all. But that's exactly why I need to use my calculations to prove the hypothesis. I know you can do it. I'm going to keep thinking it over until I hit upon a viable method. Looks like you may have a way to go, then. Well, to generate an accurate hypothesis, one needs great amounts of data. To concretely determine the height of the sky, we must learn how much mana exists in general, as well as a great number of other detailed numbers. But there's no one who can fly into the sky and begin the investigation, so I'm not quite sure how to begin. Actually, there might be. Please don't tell me you can fly and have been hiding that this whole time. Me? No, I'm a ground kind of guy. But we can ask Midgardsormr. What a fantastic idea! Being a dragon, he will likely also know a good many things about mana. Perhaps this is a problem that will need to be solved by humans and dragons both.

And now, Midgardsormr, you and I shall attempt to discover the edge of the sky! I have no idea about what you speak. Xiao Lei has come up with a working hypothesis suggesting the sky eventually comes to an end. She and the prince have come to Midgardsormr to ask questions about the sky and mana. ...I see. That's the theory—but we figured we'd ask you since dragons seem to be well- versed in mana and the like. So then, what's the truth? Do higher places really have a reduced amount of mana? It is as you have conjectured. As elevation increases, mana is reduced. I knew it! Oh, but this is such a relief. If it had been disproven, my theory would have fallen apart. I am rather surprised you noticed. The reduction in mana based on elevation is a slight one at best. If you consider the flow of mana to be 100 at ground level, the summit of a mountain would be something like 90. Wait, what?! Say that again. Please!
