The Stand-In

Life... What IS life? Wandering Mage Xania Ah, but my friend looked simply stunning in her wedding dress. Perhaps someday I'll wear such a wonder as well... Whatever are you mumbling about? Oh! Hello, Elisanne. Are you worrying overmuch about the vagaries of life again? Actually, I have marriage on my mind. You're getting married?! Congratulations! Oh no, not me. I've simply been invited to a great number of weddings lately. I suppose I'm entering that time where one friend after another exits my life to the sweet peal of wedding bells. Ah, I see. I can't help but think how wonderful the experience must be, what with the fine dress and other assorted pageantry. It makes me dream about experiencing those feelings for myself someday. ...Not that I have any current plans in that department, alas. Here, now! You cannot simply waltz in without so much as a by your leave! Does Cleo have guests? If so, it sounds like they are being quite the handful. We should go take a look. Is everything all right, Cleo? This woman just barged into the castle and started demanding that I put aside what I was doing and help her! It's said you castle folks are always helping people, right? So are you or not?! Er, I suppose that's accurate? So why aren't you helping ME?! Lady, we don't even know what you WANT. My name is Emily, and I want all of you to help me elope! Whaaaaat?! Okay, that's not usually the kind of help that we— You see, I'm in love with a wonderful man, but my parents are insisting that I enter an arranged marriage to someone else! Well, I'm not going to do what they want! I will be married to my sweet babboo come hell or high water! Ah, it's like something out of a faerie tale! Well, except for the "sweet babboo" part. Wrong! The love he and I share is BETTER than any faerie tale! So here's my plan: You people go out and find a fake who will PRETEND to be me at the arranged-marriage ceremony. Then, while you're schmoozing at the wedding and eating cake or whatnot, me and my sweet babboo will run away and be married in secret! Er, but won't the entire audience be filled with your friends and family? Surely they are going to notice that this false bride is not actually YOU. Yeah, yeah, don't worry. I've got that all covered. This plan is a couple potatoes short of a full stew. Who the heck would ever sign on to such a batty thing?! Actually, um... I will. What's that? You'll be the fake me? No takebacks, you all heard her! Now come on, get this wedding dress on. Let's go, move it, move it! Me and my sweet babboo don't have all day! This is... Oh my goodness... What a wedding dress! Yep, yep, that all fits perfectly. No one will ever suspect a THING! Well, I suppose I will give it my best. And I will make plans for my elopement. Thaaaanks, you guys are the best! Toodles! Goodness, what a pushy woman! Still, it must be difficult to come from the type of family where an arranged marriage is expected of you. Marriage is more of a business arrangement than anything else for folks like that. That lady TOTALLY meant business. ...I kinda want to be her now. Well, as we've apparently been press-ganged into her service, I suppose we should... Er, Xania? A bride... I'm a bride! Wait, but what do I DO?! Should I do something bride-y? Perhaps a little self-improvement? Or maybe transform myself into a totally different person for my special day! I fear she has lost the plot a bit. Normally I'd say she was simply getting distracted in her own way, but this does appear to be something more severe. Well, she seems to be enjoying herself, so let's just roll with it for now. Maybe we'll figure this whole thing out while she figures out...um, herself. Goodness, my heart is pounding... Being a bride is so INTENSE! Are we certain she is going to be all right?

Episode 2

A Nice Idea

I'm going to do whatever is necessary to be the best bride I can be! Wearing that dress again, are you? Of course. If I don't wear this dress, I'll just be regular old me. What's wrong with regular old you? When I wear this dress, it makes me feel as if I can aim higher and fly farther. It's like I can do anything! *sigh* But for what PURPOSE are you doing all of this high aiming and flying and...so forth? So I can be the perfect bride, of course! When my sister-in-law, Mei, got engaged, she focused on improving herself so she would be the best bride possible. Well, I suppose there is nothing wrong with striving to better oneself. Nope! There isn't. And that's why I'm going to learn to cook with MAGIC! Abracadabra! ...And there we have it! Well, Cleo? Thoughts? Hmm... Well, as a complete meal, I would have to say it's rather ordinary. Er, that's the GOOD kind of ordinary, right? The way you put it together was adroit, but the actual menu itself lacks anything particularly noteworthy. It feels as if you simply threw food together without thinking about it. But I was trying to make a home-cooked meal full of nutritious love! Was it the ingredients that were lacking? Perhaps the number of dishes? I think what it lacks is passion—and the way to solve that is to have someone else join you at the table. I don't understand. A bride—or any chef—is best able to create delicious meals when they're doing it for someone special. Without that person, the meal becomes little more than sustenance. So I was lacking someone special... Ah, well. I'll have to worry about this later. Right now, I need to get ready for my first meet-and-greet with the groom! ...Actually, I wonder if that might help my current problem. Even if he isn't my actual lover, perhaps meeting him would help to better my bridal ways. That's not a bad thought. In that case, I'm going to get ready! Several days later... You must be Emily. Ah, it's good to see my judgment wasn't mistaken when it came to picking out the dress—it looks absolutely stunning on you! Er, um...th-thank you? (I may be a false bride, but I still have to imagine that I'm doing my best for the sake of the man I love.) (Imagine, Xania! Imagine as you have never imagined before!) Er, Emily? ...Hello? Ah! Yes! Hello, my...um...sweet. You were staring off into space. Does your time with me bore you so? Not at all, my...daaaarling? (Blast. My imagination is failing me!) (I'd hoped to feel much more effervescent upon our first meeting.) ...Well, I'm home. And so very tired! It appears I've a long way to go on my path to becoming the perfect bride. Well, well. If it isn't Xania. What's with the stylish getup? Hello, Mym. Er, it's a rather long story, but basically I've been entrusted with the role of being a bride. Ooo, that sounds simply DELIGHTFUL! But then, why do you look so dour? Well, I've some worries about— EEEK! Was that an explosion?! Where there are booms, there's Sinoa. *sigh* Let's go help the daft thing out before we get to hearing your woes. Sinoa? Are you alive? That was quite the explosion, even by your standards. S-sorry! ...Oh, and I'm alive, if that wasn't obvious from the speaking. Intrepid Scholar Sinoa Where did I go wrong? It should have been reproduced perfectly! Hmm... What say we get this cleaned up first, then try to suss out the possible cause. Come now, it will go quickly if all three of us pitch in. ...Whew! I think we're back to normal. Or as normal as I ever get, I suppose. And it's mostly because of Xania's nifty cleaning magic—so perhaps you should stop woolgathering and THANK her. Oh, it was nothing so impressive. You're a true lifesaver, Xania. Thank you. Still, I refuse to give up! I will soldier on! Someday, I WILL create a wormhole and travel to the past, no matter how many explosions it takes! Amazing... What, the explosions? Well, you see, when one attempts to warp space-time, the effects of both force and mass begin— Er, no. I meant YOU. The fact you've dedicated yourself so completely to a single goal is truly laudable. In the same way, I'm impressed by how Mym is able to dedicate herself so wholly to her love of the prince. Is THAT what you were worried about? That you have nothing in your life which demands a similar passion? But you DO have something like that! Didn't your father leave you a scroll or magical beans or something? It was a book: "Better Living Through Spellcraft." And yes, it is incredibly important to me. But that is different; it's something that was GIVEN to me. The two of you have passions that came about organically. I want to be the best bride I can be, but unless I'm able to dedicate myself to it heart and soul, I don't think... Why are you trying so hard to be a perfect bride in the first place, Xania? Well, I suppose I find the idea to be rather...nice. And THAT'S what you're beating yourself up about? An idea that's "nice"? Um...yes? Then you're never going to be able to feel the spark of inspiration you seek! Neither one of us chase our passions because we find them to be "nice." Indeed. I give my all to my work because it burns inside me like the fire of a molten magma core! So think about yourself for a moment. Find your REASON for trying so hard. My reason... Hmm... Nope. Nothing. All I can come up with is that it feels...nice. So perhaps my problem isn't a lack of general household knowledge—or a loved one or partner to share it with. Perhaps I simply lack the WILL. You don't lack will, Xania. You lack LOVE. And since you're not in love, you can't possibly give something like this your all! That's why you only see it as "nice." So without both the proper will and love, I'll never be a perfect bride... Well, I promise you this: I AM going to find what I love someday!

Episode 3

Commence the Operation!

The day is here at last! Today, we put Operation Help Emily Elope into action! Yeah, eloping on the actual day of the wedding sounds suuuuper crazypants. Are we SURE sure this is a good idea? It's the PERFECT day for it! All the players will be at the venue at the same time, which means we'll trick everyone at once! We all just need to play our parts, like we discussed earlier. The prince and Notte will stay with Emily. I, of course, play the bamboozler bride, while Cleo and Elisanne are my escorts in case something goes amiss. Come now, everyone! Off we go! Let's help Emily follow her heart and live her truest love! Ladies and gentlemen, please fix your attention upon the lady of the hour! The bride has arrived! ...... Who in the blazes are YOU?! And where is my daughter?! But I met this woman earlier and she... Wait. You are NOT Emily?! Alas, I am not the daughter of a duke; I am the daughter of a pumpkin farmer! Also, if I can make a quick sidebar here, if you stew our pumpkins in a light broth, they become delights without peer. If anyone wants a recipe, I can— Still your flapping gums, peasant! None here care a whit for your gourds! Servants! Stop gaping like the village idiot and seize this impostor at once! Well, this could have gone better... Cleo! Elisanne! To me! Might I suggest a hasty retreat? With the focus on the "hasty" part. I must agree. This wedding is filled with civilians, not soldiers. It would be a stain upon my honor to do battle with them. Not to worry: I prepared a little spell just in case everything went haywire. Aaaaand...ABRACADABRA! What the...?! My clothes! They're stuck to the table! This is not a spell I've heard of before. It's normally used by noblewomen to help their fancy strapless gowns stay in place. I just repurposed it a bit. Magic is so very useful sometimes. And the best part is that they can't chase after Emily either! A thousand gold pieces for the man who catches that fake and returns my daughter! A few hours later... *pant* *pant* Xania, Emily's here. How'd the plan go? I bet they were all SO fooled! Oh, uh, yep! They were fooled all right! And this is TOTALLY unrelated, but we miiight have a number of very angry people chasing us at the moment. There she is! Seize her! Huh. I was so sure this would work... Okay, never mind. We'll hold them off; you take Emily and get out of here! Let's go, Emily! For your love! *pant* *pant* Now that we've come this far, they ought to be— ...Huh?! Who's there?! THERE you are! Oh no! It's one of the servants! Wait, hold on. You're... MEI?! Is that you?! XANIA?! What are YOU doing here, sister-in-law?! I should ask you the same question! Well, before I married your brother, I was a maid at Lady Emily's manor. I still fill in there from time to time when things are slow on the pumpkin farm. But my part in this isn't important. What are you even DOING, Xania?! Well, you see, we had this great plan, but then things sort of went...poorly. I'm going to need you to sit down and explain everything to me at some point. But for now, Lady Emily, you must go back. I'm sure there's still time for the wedding to proceed this evening if we— No! I'm not going back! I love someone else, Mei, and we have sworn ourselves to each another. I WILL marry my sweet babboo, even if it means throwing away both my wealth and standing. A life of poverty is a small price to pay to be with the one I love! But if I were to let you go, Lady Emily... (She's right. If they find out Mei let Emily go, they'll fire her on the spot.) Come, Xania. Let us be off. ...Er, Xania? Why are you...holding my arm...and preventing me from leaving?! Ummm... (What do I DO?! I want Emily to be happy, but not at the expense of Mei!) (Oh, but this IS a pickle!) Keep her close, Xania... ...... There they are! ...Keep her close while you run and don't look back! Wait, so you're going to— If Lady Emily is truly in love, that is more precious than any employment of mine. Now get out of here already! Th-thank you, Mei... Come on, Emily! We have to go now! *pant* *pant* Look! There's the carriage! We did it. We escaped. Oh, thank you for everything! I hope that one day you can be as happy as my sweet babboo and I. Farewell, Xania! Good-bye, Emily! Please be careful! (Look how happy she is. Emily is the true bride here, even if I am the one wearing the fancy dress.) Finding a Reason

Hee hee! I can't believe we're having tea time in an actual CASTLE, Xania. Thank you for the invitation! The pleasure is mine. I actually wanted to talk to you properly about what happened on the day of Lady Emily's elopement. Okay, that's enough of your pained look. Yes, I got fired from my job at the manor, but I'm going to be just fine. That aside, I want to know WHY you helped her elope in the first place. Well, Emily asked me to. And I suppose it just seemed like a...nice thing to do. Also, part of me REALLY wanted to wear a wedding dress. But during this whole process, I realized that I have an inferiority complex about people who get happily married. It even extends to you and my brother. I'm honestly jealous of you. And it's all because I have nothing. I mean, yes, I want to finish writing "Better Living Through Spellcraft." But beyond that? ...Nothing. Plus, I inherited that goal from my father; it isn't one I chose for myself. I went through all of this bridal frenzy, but I emerged from it as just...me. So who AM I? What does my life MEAN? Wow, Sis. Whenever I try to answer that, I realize I don't HAVE something or someone special that I can dedicate myself to. I'm just me...and I have nothing. Okay, that's not true at all! You work hard, and you have SO many strengths—you just haven't realized it. And suppose you did have someone to be with. Sure, they'd be able to encourage and support you, but they wouldn't become your entire reason for living. Work, love, and marriage are all great, but they don't define who you are. They don't? No! What matters is that you figure out for yourself what is important to you. The ACT of deciding is the important thing. But am I capable of that? So much more than you know. Heh. The way you say that actually makes me feel like it might be true. I knew I liked you. Hello, Xania. Did Mei go back home? Yes. But we talked things over and I'm feeling much better now. I'm glad to hear it. Without both of your help that day, I don't think the elopement ever would have succeeded. Oh, I didn't do much. On the contrary—we never would have escaped if not for your magic. Oh, anyone could have done that. I'm just a nobody who holds people back. That's not true. You're a help to us both off and on the battlefield. We need you. ...... So if what matters is that I decide my passion for myself... Xania? Shake hands with me! Is this a trick? Did Notte slip you a joy buzzer when I wasn't looking? I want to continue to stay here and help everyone, so we'll shake hands as proof of those feelings! This is really weird, but... Okay, sure. I'd be happy to have you here, Xania. Thank you! (I don't understand love or marriage or my reason for living, and that makes me feel as though I'm lost.) (But I DO know that I want to do my best for everyone here, so perhaps that's reason enough for now.) (Because if I'm with them, I know I'll be able to find a greater happiness!)

One Step Closer

Yep, this wedding dress is very cute! Pardon me, coming through! ...Phew! THAT was a load. Sinoa? Cleo? What's in that package? You have a delivery. More importantly, you're wearing a wedding dress again. No! This dress isn't... Um... No need to apologize. In any case, here is the package and a letter, both addressed to you. That thing weighed a ton. What the heck is IN there? I honestly have no idea... Oh! It's from my sister-in-law, Mei! The one who helped save the day during the elopement I've heard so much about? How do you know about that, Sinoa?! Because everyone in the entire castle won't shut up about it. That's how. WHAAAT?! Oh, that's so embarrassing... There's nothing to be embarrassed about. Now, what does that letter say? Er, let me see... "Dearest Xania. I hope this finds you well. I'm doing great! I found a job that is keeping me quite busy." "I'm now working with a tailor as an assistant dressmaker." "When the day comes for you to wear a wedding dress, I hope it's one of mine." "Also, I'm sending some hand-picked pumpkins from the patch to share around the castle." "P.S. I missed my chance to say this before, but you looked SMOKIN' in that wedding dress. Hope you're well. Write back soon!" Ooo! We've got puuuumpkins! No wonder that thing was so heavy. Also, Mei found a new job! That's a real relief. Yes, but how are YOU doing, Xania? I know you were pretty down before about not having a true passion in your life. Did you manage to find something? Well, I think I've changed at least a little on that front. I want to love now. You want to find a partner? No, I want to love...me. I may lack confidence and get bogged down by life, but that is still ME. And I want to love that person. But I also want to grow and get better, and become the kind of person who isn't always down on herself. Aw, that's great! Er, sorry if that got a little strange. I don't really talk about myself much. I wish you could see yourself right now. That look on your face is lovely—and so different from how you looked before. Huh. Maybe that means I HAVE changed. But if I can finally love myself more, then when I meet someone ELSE I love... Well, I think I'll be an even better bride and partner than I am now. Speaking of which, Cleo, I want to make dinner tonight! I may still be just plain old ordinary me, but I am a WHIZ when it comes to preparing some amazing pumpkins! Lemme just break out the ol' magic so they float in the air and I can carry them all... There! Okay, I'm off to the kitchen. Do you think Xania's ordinary, Cleo? Not in the slightest. Just look at how she repurposes magic for any task. That takes true skill. I don't think I've ever seen anyone who so readily applies magic to everyday life. Someday, she'll realize that—and I think she's a step closer to that point today than she was yesterday. She's going to make a lucky someone very, very happy. I'm sure of that, if nothing else.
