Episode 1

The Wedding Scheme

...A fiend is demanding that you supply village women as sacrifices?! Aye, that's right. It's a terrifying, cunning beast that lives deep within the forest. It has threatened to destroy our entire village unless we continue to gift it with a supply of young maidens. And so ya've been sendin' em for a while now... I cannot imagine a more heinous crime than a fiend who forces people to surrender their loved ones! This is not a matter we can simply walk away from, Euden. Oh, I wouldn't dream of it. Right then. What is our plan? From what we've heard, there are a number of smaller fiends doing the bidding of the one who is demanding the sacrifices. I think we can assume the leader will be waiting in its den for the sacrifice, so the question then becomes how to find it and lure it out. Bwaaa ha ha ha! Oh man, ol' Ranzal just had himself one HELL of an idea. Experience tells me not to expect overmuch from this. Well, let's hear what he has to say. What's your plan, Ranzal? Well, the first thing what we do is hand over a sacrifice like normal. I knew this plan would be sheer idiocy. That is what we are trying to STOP! Don't get yer smallclothes in a bunch! I ain't finished yet. The chief told us the sacrifice gets taken back to the fiends' den, yeah? So we let 'em collect the sacrifice, follow 'em back to their lair, then take 'em out and save the day! I don't know. It seems risky. Agreed. Also agreed. Yes, it would lead us to the fiend's lair, but it would ALSO expose whatever villager we use as our bait to significant danger. Oh, we ain't usin' a villager... We're gonna use ME! Bwaaa ha ha! Oh man, I am BRILLIANT sometimes! Did you miss the part where the fiend has been demanding young WOMEN? It's a FIEND, not some egghead scientist! Gimme a dress and slather some makeup on and it'll never know the difference. Oh, I think it very much will. If this is to be our course of action, I shall stand in as the sacrifice. Are you sure, Elly? Yes. Unlike a villager, I can more than hold my own in combat if necessary. All right, we'll leave this to you. But PLEASE be careful. On my sacred honor as a Paladyn, I shall make this operation a success. Wh... Whaaaa... WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?! Whooooooa. Clap shut your slackened jaws! I REFUSE to wear this absurd getup! Er, but this is what we've been doing. We choose a young woman from the village and send her to the fiend clad in our finest wedding dress. The beast might suspect mischief if we change things up now. You said nothing about this sacrifice being outfitted as the fiend's BRIDE. Exactly what significance is there in such an extravagant outfit? I cannot imagine this fiend cares how its food is dressed. By wearing this dress, there can be no mistake on the fiend's part as to who our chosen sacrifice is. I see the logic in what you say... and yet I STILL refuse to wear this! What's the problem? Ain't like this is the first time ya dressed up for a mission. Not as a BRIDE! For what it's worth, Elly, you look pretty. Maybe just give it a try? Th-that is a very mean-spirited joke, Your Highness. I'm serious. Of course, you look good in pretty much whatever you wear. E-enough! Avert your eyes! And yet, it IS a stunning garment... It's funny how much ya soften up when yer talkin' to Euden. Again you seek to make me the subject of your base mockery! I will not stand for it, sir! Not today! *sniff* Cleo? What's wrong? Why are you crying? I was just picturing what your wedding ceremony will be like. This must be how it feels when it is time for one's daughter to get married! *sniiiff* I AM NOT GETTING MARRIED!

Episode 2

A Despondent Bride

*sigh* Something wrong? As you know, Highness, I agreed to wear this outfit for the sake of our operation. However, I cannot help but feel gloomy thinking what would happen if someone from the Church saw me like this. Why would the Church be concerned with you wearing a wedding dress? We Paladyns are not allowed to marry without the Church's permission. First, we must secure parental approval. Then there is an inquiry to determine if our love is genuine, after which a high Church official must give their formal consent. There are also countless procedures that need to be followed and oaths to swear— far more than for an ordinary layman. Marriage is a highly sacred and solemn matter for Paladyns, and one we do not take lightly. Sounds like a real gauntlet of sufferin' right there. When taking up our position, we swear to devote our hearts and bodies entirely to Ilia and the people of this land. All of which amounts to yet another reason I do not feel comfortable in this frock. Yeah, but yer just wearin' the dress to fool some fiend! Ain't like yer actually gonna be dodgin' rice in the aisle. Indeed, you are doing this to protect innocent lives. You should be proud. Yes, but still... (And yet, it is difficult NOT to think about marriage while wearing a dress like this. And it's not as though I've never dreamed of doing such a thing...) (But the Church's decision in these matters is final. If they withhold their approval, there is nothing that can be done.) (Except perhaps to...e-elope?) (Augh, no! What am I even thinking? I could never put His Highness through something like that!) (...Wait. Why did HE come into this?!) (Calm yourself, Elisanne!) (The issue of marriage is difficult enough between members of the Church, never mind between a Paladyn and a royal.) (Although come to think of it, I am unsure if such a thing has ever come to pass. I would be generating an entirely new problem for the Church to puzzle out!) (If it were to result in a factional schism, I would be dragging His Highness into the center of yet another conflict!) (...Augh! WHY does his name keep coming up in this?!) (How shameful. I dedicated myself to Ilia, yet now find myself adrift in fantasy.) (This needs to end! I must remember the oath I took when becoming a Paladyn— the one where I swore to stand up to hardship and evil no matter the cost!) (...But if it came to it, I'm sure he would fight by my side so long as our love for one another burned bright.) You okay, Elly? You've been muttering to yourself for a while now. There is no obstacle too great for love to overcome! Uh...okay? Yes, love! ...Wait, no! What am I saying?! Sorry, I'm sort of confused. When did the power of love come into all of this? I meant...um...my love for the goddess! Yes, that's it. So long as I hold Ilia in my heart, there is no trial I cannot overcome! I was just trying to motivate myself to face the task ahead, as any true Paladyn might! Ah ha! Ah ha ha...haaaaaaaa. Oh! Well, I suppose that makes sense. At any rate, let's make sure this mission is a rousing success, Elly! ...... (Ugh. How could I possibly let vice consume me like this?) (I am a Paladyn! My mind should be free of all such immoral thoughts!) Stay alert, everyone! Graaaagh! Ah, hell! Look at all of 'em! I don't think they're related to the fiend that's threatening the village—but that doesn't mean we can ignore them! To arms, all! You can leave this to us, Elly. You can't fight in that dre— ...ladyn. Sorry, what? I am... Graaaaagh! ...A Paladyn. A PALADYN! I AM A PALADYYYYYYN! BEGONE, VILE THOUGHTS! BEGOOOOOONE! Well, she's certainly making short work of this bunch. The hell's gotten into her? I can only assume it's a result of how very unforgivable she finds all this. She really IS a model Paladyn. Yeah, I don't think that's it, boss. For once, I actually agree with Ranzal. ...I may need to go lie down.

An Impromptu Confession

We have arrived at the area where the sacrifices are collected. We'll be hiding in the bushes over there while you wait. Be careful, Elly! And you as well. Hmm. I figured the fiends would have appeared by now. ...Huh? Graaaaaaah! (There you are! Now show us the way to that abominable fiend's lair!) Stay close, everyone—but be sure that you aren't noticed. We won't let 'em outta our si... Huh?! Graaagh! Ah! More fiends! If we try and take 'em all out, we're gonna lose Elisanne! We'll take care of these chumps. You go on, Euden! All right! Take care, you two! This must be its lair... Elly! Haaaah! Your Highness! ...Er, but where are Cleo and Ranzal? They were waylaid by a pack of fiends. We'll have to handle this alone. ...Blast, there are even more of them than I thought. What should we do? ME WANT SACRIFICE! This must be the leader! BRIDE! SACRIFICE! PRETTY! ...Pretty? Wait, is he referring to ME?! BRIDE MINE! GIVE TO ME! GIVE HEART AND BODY TO ME! So he makes the sacrifice offer their very heart to him, then devours it?! GIVE ME HEART, BRIDE! SWEAR LOVE TO ME! I shall swear nothing to an unholy creature such as yourself! SWEAR! SWEAR LOVE! SWEAR LOOOOVE! What the... It's attacking the other fiends! It must be going mad with rage! SWEAR, BRIDE! SWEAR YOU MINE! It's angry because you rejected it... I think we can use this! She will never belong to you, fiend... For she has already given her heart to me! WHAT?! Y-your Highness, what are you saying?! The more he feels like he can't have what he wants, the angrier he's going to get! ...Which will make him defeat more of the other fiends for us. Brilliant! Come on, Elly! We have to pretend that we're madly in love! W-w-we...have to p-p-preeee... Is something wrong? ...N-no. It is a fine plan, and I am ever prepared to see it through. Then let's do this! Do your worst, you one-eyed freak! She'll NEVER love you like she does me! W-well said, my...sweet. I've loved her since the day we met! Ah! She means more to me than anyone in the entire world! AAAAAH! (Dear Ilia, whatever did I do to deserve a reward—er, I mean, a TRIAL like this?!) GRRRAAAAAAGGGGHHH! GIVE HEART TO ME, SACRIFICE! SWEAR LOVE TO ME! Go, Elly! Tell him how strong our love is! I...I care for this person! Er, but... RRRGH? Disparate Duties

I feared the worst at one point, but am glad we were able to defeat it. Elly, did you hurt your arm? Sadly, yes. I am not used to fighting in a dress, and lost my balance a few—AAAH! ...Much like that. Need a hand? No, I shall be quite all ri—AAAARGH! Ugh. I seem to have sprained my ankle. Perhaps these high heels were ill-advised... Then climb on my back and I'll carry you. ...Oh, wait. I forgot about your arm. Hmm... Er, Your Highness? What are you...? (He's...he's carrying me in his ARMS.) ...... Huh? Wh-what?! No! I am fine! Please put me down! But you can't walk on that ankle. I shall think of something! Just please, put me down! I can't handle this! Easy, Elly! If you keep struggling, you're going to— Ack! I am so very sorry. My heart simply could not handle... Er, I mean, I did not wish to burden you overmuch. You shouldn't worry about that. Still, I think we're both a bit tired, so how about we stop and rest? Yes, I think that might be best. *sigh* Wedding dresses are exhausting— and in more ways than one. *siiigh* I've never heard you sigh this much, Elly. But I suppose you DID just fight off fiends in a wedding dress. While I admit it to be a beautiful dress, I believe armor suits me better. I dunno. The dress is pretty great on you. It's because you say things like that without thinking that I... Sorry, what? ...When I first became a Paladyn, I swore my body and soul to the goddess. I haven't given a thought to the idea of marriage since that day. But wearing this dress made me think on what would happen if I DID get married. Even though we were acting back there, I never expected to swear my undying love to anyone other than Ilia. I'm sorry. I know it was uncomfortable, but it was all I could think of at the time. No, I enjoyyyyy... Er, I mean... I've never had a conversation such as that before, and it was actually quite...exciting. Not in the least bit unpleasant. Heh. I suppose it would have been a once-in-a-lifetime experience to swear your undying love to a fiend. Heh. It would have, at that. I doubt I will have cause to say anything like that to anyone again—fiend or human. What makes you think that? I take great pride in being a Paladyn. That would not change if I were to marry, and yet in that case, there would be times where I had to prioritize my family— especially if children were involved. That would mean prioritizing myself over both the goddess and the people I have sworn to serve. That is something I can never do, which is why I said today will be the first and last time I speak of love in such a way. Hmm. You know, one of the Paladyns who used to guard Zethia got married a few years back. I saw then just how hard it was to gain the Church's approval for a wedding. Of course, she was very busy after she was married, which meant others had to fill in for her duties more and more. Exactly as I would have predicted. But she was also SO much happier. She also got stronger, both in body and mind. I would have thought having less time to train would make her weaker. She said it was because she had more to protect than before. She even started looking out for me even though I wasn't technically her charge. She put both me and my sister at ease. I never would have thought of marriage as being a source of strength for a Paladyn. Anyway, all of this is to say that if you WERE to get married, I don't think it means you're neglecting your duties. Honestly, I'd just be glad you were happy. I'm sure everyone else feels the same— including the Church AND the goddess. Thank you for your kindness, Your Highness. (He is right—I can be a Paladyn and still do other things with my life.) (It is up to ME to decide my future!)

A Future of Possibilities

Thank you all so much! Our village will no longer need to send young people to their deaths ever again. I don't know how to thank you! You don't need to thank us at all. Slaying fiends who threaten the innocent is our duty. Be that as it may, I still wish to do SOMETHING to repay you. I know! Why not take that dress?! THIS dress? We are a poor village, and have nothing else that might serve as a fitting reward. The village weaver always worked hard to make the finest dresses around, believing it the least we could do for the poor girls. It's frankly our most valuable possession. You can keep or sell it as you see fit. But please, young Paladyn, won't you accept it? Hmm... It would be difficult for Elisanne to accept it given her position—and I'm unsure what she would do with it regardless. Very well. I accept. What?! Hmm? Why do you look so surprised? You ain't plannin' to get hitched, are ya? I have no such plans. But wearing this bespoke dress has given me an appreciation for just how beautiful and lovingly made it is. I can tell the village weaver poured everything into it. How could I turn away such a gift without grave insult? That is why I intend to give it a fine home in the castle. ...... All this time, I've been convinced that I needed to dedicate myself entirely to my duties as a Paladyn. But that was just a tale I told myself. Continuing to devote myself entirely to my work is, of course, an option. But I can also choose to get married AND continue my duties as a Paladyn. I might even start a family someday. ...... Ah, but this is folly. Why think about such things when I don't even have a partner? I have no idea when the day will come that I wear a wedding dress for real. Maybe it will NEVER come.
