A Just Thief

HAH! HYAAAH! ...Whew. I'd say that's the day's training. It's turned into rather an eerie night. Maybe it's the dampness to the air, but it feels almost...uncanny. I'll be happy to get back to where everyone— Hngh?! You dodged that? Impressive. Perhaps there really is something to that little nickname of yours. What nickname? Who are you? And why did you attack me?! Curious which of your past atrocities is the one that finally did you in, mmm? Well, that grim list ends tonight, Alfredo the Clairvoyant! There's no place in this world for a noble so foul and rotten as you. Your wicked life ends today! I don't know who you're talking about, but it isn't me! Ha! Your lies can't save you now! Spend your final breath on a prayer for forgiveness! I'm telling you, I'm not this Alfredo person! ...Er, which is a really weird name, if I'm being honest. My name is Euden. The traitor prince? Now THAT is a nickname I recognize. Expose your face, rogue! My eyes shall have the final judgment in this matter. Wha—?! You're not Alfredo at all! My most humble apologies, good sir! Pray forgive my insult. Had you not dodged... Fie, but I nearly did the unthinkable! I certainly did not expect to run into the traitor prince out here. Well, now I HAVE to join you. What? Who even ARE you? I am Waike, thief by trade, friend to the weak, and fiend to the wicked! You gather allies to reclaim your homeland, do you not? I believe justice is on your side in this battle. I shall fight at your side to steal back the lands so cruelly ripped from your bosom! I, um...thanks? I still have questions. Lots of them, actually. But for now, allow me to welcome you to our cause. Being run off from your home cuts deep. I've some experience with this as well. You have my sympathy. Are you in exile? Enough about me! Guilty as Charged

Whoa! Get a load of this feast! Everything looks incredible! Let us dine! *chomp* *smack* ...HURF?! This is not amazing... It is SPECTACULAR! The fish practically melts on the tongue! My mouth is a jester's carnival of flavor! Bwa ha ha! We got another gut what gets it over here! Keep that plate piled, pal! I'll take a round'a seconds myself! It won't run away, you know. If you slowed down, you might even taste the food you're currently wolfing down. Waike may be as big a glutton as you, but at least he has proper table manners. Now that you mention it, you're right. There's an air of refinement to it, even. Yeah, he's usin' a fork AND a knife. Plus that little paper dealie ya wipe yer face with! ...Show-off. Such refinement doesn't end at the table. He carries himself with dignity and poise in general. I never had much use for them things, but I see whatcha mean. Might you all be so good as to cease gawking at me? I find it unnerving. Er, sorry. We were just marveling at how...elegant you are. You have these little movements and gestures that are just so refine— Gah! Hearing it voiced aloud is even worse than the gawking! Were your parents strict about etiquette? Is this the result of their teaching? Ah, I see it now. You're highborn. Aren't you? Whoa, wait. Like an aristocrat? I think you guys are forgettin' one thing... Our buddy here's a thief. Ain't no way— I suppose there's no hiding these things. No hidin' what things? Guilty as charged, my new friends! I was, in fact, born a noble. Huh. Neat. ＂Neat＂?! That's all? Give me a true reaction here, people! WHAAAT?! A N-N-NOBLE?! There's no call for sarcasm. There must be quite a story behind how a noble wound up a thief. Indeed there is! I became who I am today for one reason alone... Aaaand that is... FOR JUSTICE! ...... ...... ...Well. Let's continue our meal. What, no love for justice? No one? Anyone? Hellooo?! Give me SOMETHING here, people!

Hunter and Prey

There you are, Euden. Fancy a little break from the grind? Perhaps you might join me for a hunt. You're kind to offer, but I'm afraid I've little experience in hunting. Not to worry, my friend. I'll teach you all there is to know from the ground up! Well, I can't very well say no to that. Excellent! Let us be off, then. Er...it's night. Not a problem. Follow me! What in... Waike?! We're really going hunting in the middle of the night? Are we tracking some nocturnal animal? Oh, something like that. If the tip I got is correct, they should be along shortly. ...Heh. Speak of the devil. Hmm? I've seen that man before at the palace. He's a nobleman, if I recall. The hunt is on, friend. Let's get to work. Please tell me we're not hunting what I think we're hunting. We are hunting EXACTLY what you think we're hunting! Uh-oh. Looks like we'll need to move fast before the prey slips the noose. Waike, wait! I'm not going to let you attack some random stranger! Shh, quiet! He'll— Damn! He heard us and took heel. Why did you stop me, Euden?! I think you owe me an explanation, Waike. What is this hunt? Why did you target that man? Karma. He's been draining the people dry to line his pockets—it's only fair he learn what it feels like on the other end. He's done plenty to warrant this much. If you had any idea the sorts of things he's been up to in secret... I'm a thief, yes. I make no bones about it. But I only steal from crooked nobles who exploit the common folk! All I'm doing is returning ill-gotten coin to its rightful owners. Thank you for the explanation. I understand what you're doing now. But it still isn't right, Waike. Justice isn't served by committing further crimes. Surely there are other ways to go about it, especially for a man of your skills. Why stoop to this? ...Rgh. I do not understand you. You and I are the same. Or we SHOULD be. How can you bear to stay so high-minded? Now I don't understand. Ugh. Forget it. This hunt has been an abject failure. I'm going back to the castle.

Episode 4

Stolen Homeland

...What do you want? Off on another noble hunt? And if I am? Will you try to stop me? Not a bad idea. I may take you up on it. But first, I want to hear how it is you came to do this. Attacking people, I mean. I'm sure you weren't always the sort of man who made such things his hobby. We can have story time once I'm back. Now kindly move aside. ...... Euden. ...Or we can have story time now. Since you so clearly insist. Very well. I shall tell you of the day everything changed. (I grew up in the far north, born to a sylvan noble house.) (I wanted for nothing as a child, but one day my travels took me to a remote village. The experience opened my eyes.) (I learned the comfortable life I enjoyed was built on the suffering of others.) Master Waike, sir, the king's new taxes are more than we can pay. At this rate, every last one of us will starve. Please, sir. Please speak to him. Ask him to reconsider. I beg you! I had no idea you all were suffering so. Pray forgive my ignorance. I cannot ignore the problem now that I am aware. I shall see to it at once. (Theirs was a poor village to begin with, but they were a hardy, honest people.) (I swore to do all in my power to help them.) (No law is just that sees good folk like them suffer. It cannot be so.) (And so I begged an audience with the king and asked him to revisit his policy.) (Oh, how naive I was...) I was branded a traitor to the crown for my trouble and sent into exile. The villagers fared worse. Put to death as dangerous radicals all, down to the last woman and child. ...... Now I have a question for you. Before we met, I heard the stories of Euden, the exile prince, and saw myself in you. But when I look at who stands before me, all I see are reminders there were other paths I might have taken besides revenge. I've tried to shut my eyes to them, but it is as I said: I never was able to ignore something once I know it's there. Tell me, then: How should I have lived? What was the right answer? Waike, I... That's a very difficult question. I agree, which is why I need to think on it awhile. I'll leave off my hunts until I've found my answer. I know you'll find the right one, so take all the time you need. There is much more than revenge waiting for you.

Episode 5

A Dream to Fulfill

Ho, Euden! Hello, Waike. You're certainly in high spirits today. I am, at that. Care to join me for a hunt? Not if you're off to assault another no— No. A real hunt this time. Cleo asked me to help procure dinner. In that case, I'd be happy to join you. Ha ha! What a haul! Feast your eyes! ...... You're just dying to ask, aren't you? Go on, then. Out with it. Have you found your answer? To what we spoke of earlier, I mean. For how you will live your life? I have. You and I share a similar past, Euden. Don't you think? Falsely painted traitors, robbed of those we hold dearest, driven from our homes... Yes, we have our similarities. Yet from that shared trauma, we've gone in wildly different directions. Perhaps so. Yet seeing you, Euden— and seeing how you live—has allowed me the freedom to dream. And what do you dream of? Taking back my land—and I plan to make it my life's work, starting today. Once it's mine, I'll build proper graves for every one of its people whose lives were stolen. Until then, I fear I'm on hiatus from the thieving business. Waike, that's fantastic news. I'm prepared to offer any help I can to you, Euden. And all I ask in return... is your help to see my dream realized. Do you even have to ask? Every resource I command is at your disposal.
