Dragon Story Episodes
The Winds of Paradise
Vayu was one of the fastest dragons
that lived. His gales were so speedy,
they cut through the very land itself.
He was a gruff, carefree dragon who
never stayed in one place for long.
Instead, he traveled the world in
order to learn more about his power.
But one day, he accidentally
blew off the top of a mountain.
The top of the peak fell into the
sea and became a new island.
This made him grumpy, because he
knew the waters of this region were
home to a very annoying sea dragon.
Though he had not meant to do so,
he had created new land in someone
else's territory—which was an action
no dragon would be fond of.
He wasn't afraid of the conflict that
might occur from this action—he
just didn't want to argue about it,
because that sounded like a pain.
Rather than listen to the sea dragon
whine and complain and grumble,
Vayu decided to just sink the island
before anyone noticed it.
But alas, he had waited too long
to act, and a flock of migratory
birds had stopped on the new
island to rest their weary wings.
He considered scaring them off,
but the island was free of predators,
and the birds looked quite happy
and content with their new home.
Finally, he went to the birds
and told them they could
stay—but only for a little while.
He then spent an entire season
on the island waiting for them to go.
During this time, plants began
to grow on the island, and other
living creatures arrived and
began to take up residence.
The situation was clearly untenable,
yet Vayu found himself deeply
conflicted all the same.
The wind dragon Vayu accidentally
created an island—and he knew
that if he didn't destroy it, it would
anger a local sea dragon.
But Vayu was no monster, and he
found himself unable to harm any
of the new life that had formed there.
The island boasted singing birds,
a dazzling sun, and verdant nature.
And after but a single season,
he had developed a fondness for it.
He mulled the subject over in his
mind, and finally decided to simply
leave before the sea dragon found
the island. That way, he wouldn't
need to do anything at all.
But as he went to leave, a voice
suddenly called out to him.
"You'd better have a good
explanation for this, stranger."
The voice belonged to the sea
dragon who ruled the waters
surrounding the island.
Vayu had no choice but to tell the
dragon exactly what had transpired.
And just as he suspected, the other
dragon was enraged, demanding
that he get rid of the island at once.
Vayu groaned as the dragon left.
He knew full well what he had to
do. These waters weren't his to
interfere with to begin with.
"Argh! Just do it, Vayu," he said to
himself. "You're only getting rid of
something that never should have
been here." He swung his mighty,
wind-clad arm at the island.
The wind made his arm razor-sharp,
and he knew the island could not
survive even a single blow.
...But then he stopped.
Moments before impact, Vayu turned
the gales around his arm into a
gentle breeze. He just couldn't
bring himself to destroy the island.
When the sea dragon came back,
he was more furious than before.
But Vayu sat still and silently
accepted his endless reprimands.
Finally, the sea dragon decided to
destroy the island himself. But as he
readied to drown it in a great wave,
he looked on it and found that his
breath was taken away.
The sun shone. Greenery grew thick.
Birds tweeted in a refreshing breeze.
It was nothing short of a paradise.
"Well," said the sea dragon,
"I SUPPOSE I could get used to
an island like this in my territory."
Vayu smiled to himself, for he knew
the other dragon found his creation
as beautiful as he did.
Thus the paradise that Vayu created
was allowed to remain, and he kept
on with his journey. But from time to
time, he would sneak back and grant
the wind's blessing to the island.
