Hungry to Lose

This is the Windwyrm's castle, then? I like it. Smells like a challenge. ...Hmm? Do you have business here at the Halidom? Ah. You live here? I do. My name is Cleo. And you are? Vanessa. A warrior out training afield. I heard talk of this place and came to sign up. I'm not one to brag, but I'm undefeated in combat. I'm sure I'll be a useful addition. Not a single loss? That IS impressive. Not one—and I'm DYING to finally see what it's like. Yes, I would imagine you... Wait, you're eager to see what it feels like to LOSE? Ha ha ha! Not something you hear every day, right? And yet, it's true. ＂To know defeat is to tread the first step to true strength.＂ That's something I was taught a long time ago. I've been traveling around looking for someone to beat me ever since. Goodness... I see. I suppose there is a certain logic to that? Right? I just need one little loss, then I can start REALLY making strides! Ahh, I can't WAIT to lose! ...No, definitely still strange. You can't grow without experience! And new experiences mean the chance for new growth. Loss is just another new experience. Or new to me, at least. Is that so strange? I suppose not, when you explain it that way. But are you certain a person capable of defeating you even exists? I've got a lead on one. I saw her years back, in a little harbor town. You never saw such a knight. A knight? Until she took lance in hand, at least. Then she was like a hurricane. She'll beat me. I'm counting on it. A female knight and master of the lance... Elisanne? Hm? You say something? No. Nothing important. You're a welcome guest in the Halidom, but I would ask you not to go picking fights at random. Hah! I'll mind my manners. And thanks. Now it's time to track down the strongest one here... Perhaps I should tell Elisanne.

That form just now is exactly the same as the one etched in my memory all this time. You stood resolute on the wharf against an entire ship of pirates, sending one after the next into the sea. You were unstoppable. A force of nature. I knew in that moment you would be the one to defeat me. Now, face me! Let me taste defeat! Start me down the path to greater strength! I certainly understand the drive to improve, but I still don't see why we must fight. If you wished to train together, I would gladly join you. We could even spar, if that is more to your— Spar?! Out of the question. I'm talking about a proper duel! We fight for our lives and don't stop till one of us can fight no more! Then I must decline. I see no merit to be had in trading injuries among allies. Wait, Elisanne! No... Not after I've finally found you. I'm not backing down! Graooooowr! Elisanne! Fight me! What?! I've lost plenty, and I'm not anywhere CLOSE to catching you. I don't think that's true at all. With each round, you're growing stronger. You really think so?! Of course. I wouldn't lie about something like that. Whew, good! Then it's just a matter of time before I beat you! I didn't say that. You're not the only one getting stronger, after all.
