Episode 1

Piece of Cake

Boy, I am BORED. And now that I've finished reading every book in the library, there's REALLY nothing left to do! ...Hmm? That's Elisanne and Cleo in the kitchen? What are you two doing? Eeep! N-nothing! Nothing at all! Then why do you seem so flustered? Erk... W-well... We are about to do some baking. Oh, yum! Whatcha making? We are baking a chocolate cake. In that case, I want in on this action. I was bored stiff! We'll be happy to have you—not that we seem to have any say in the matter. I have never baked a cake before. Have you done so, Ezelith? Nope! I'm a total kitchen noob. Then we are on the same level. Let us both give it our utmost! Have you finished melting the chocolate and the butter? If so, you must move on to the meringue. I must whip these egg whites, yes? Such manual labor should come as second nature to me, I imagine. I'm gonna whip mine up real good and get plenty of air in there! Next, you both need to fold the meringue into the batter. Make sure to do so gently, so the meringue doesn't lose its air. Gently... Gently... Like...this? Ah! I think I have it! La la laaa... Wheeeee.... Done! Oh man, this puppy is PERFECT. Look how fluffy the sponge is! Man, I scare myself sometimes. You're right. I can't find a single fault in it. AND it tastes amazing! I really am a genius... Stellar work, Ezelith. It's hard to imagine we both have the same amount of experience. That's right, keep the praise coming! I fear my cake has the same shape and consistency of a Halidom brick. Wow, you're right. It hasn't risen at ALL. You likely used a bit too much strength when folding the meringue and batter. My apologies. I tried to work as carefully as possible, but perhaps that proved my undoing in the end. Baking is all about learning from failure. Allow yourself a moment to relax, then start again from the beginning. Yeah, so what if you made a mistake? Just keep at it until you don't! I mean, everyone's got stuff they aren't good at. ...Well, except me, but I'm an incredibly rare exception. Hmm... What? What is it? Oh, I was just thinking that it's unusual for you to be encouraging someone. I guess I just felt like it, is all. You got a problem with that? What got you two so fired up about making cakes, anyway? Errrrr... If we tell you, you are forbidden from speaking a word of it to anyone. The lips are zipped! We are trying to fashion a small token of our thanks and admiration. The heck are you talking about? Valentine's is a time where you give both presents and thanks to people. The sweets, chocolate, and other items you give around then are very special! Special?! Th-that wasn't my intention! If you say so. Well, let's get back to work. What are you going to do, Ezelith? Do you have any interest in continuing to bake with us? I... Nah, I've done enough. Those two looked like they were having so much fun making their cakes... Is "thanks" really such a special thing? Can it REALLY make people that happy? I don't think I get it. I don't think I get it at ALL!

Being Thankful?

Hmm... This is a tough one. I guess thanks is something I've only ever been on the receiving end of. I don't know what it feels like to give. Well, if it ain't Ezelith. Ya gettin' ready to yell at somebody there? No. Just...leave me alone. Yer weirdly docile. Normally ya woulda picked three fights with me by now. Stop. I don't feel like talking right now. Uh oh. Did somethin' happen? I'll listen if ya wanna talk. Did you not hear what I just said? *sigh* Here, if I give you this, will you go eat it over there? Chocolate cake?! Hell, I'll eat this wherever ya want! I'll eat it in a MINE! *munch* Hot damn, this is great. Did you make this? It's like somethin' ya'd find in one'a them fancy shops what sells...uh...cake. Anyway, my belly was just startin' the ol' drum roll, so thanks a million! Say, Ranzal? What does it mean to be thankful? Uh...that ain't what I was expectin' ya to say to me today. But, well, I suppose it's just the feeling ya get when ya tell someone "thanks." Like when someone does somethin' for ya or gives ya a present or whatever. Er, do ya not feel that? Nope. I've never felt like that at all. Not even once. Thanks are what other people give ME. I've never considered giving them myself. If someone does something nice for me, I assume it was supposed to happen. Like it was expected, I guess. ...Huh. Well, I guess that's just how ya are. Still, I feel like ya been changin' lately. Changing? How? You're a lot... I dunno. Friendlier, I guess? It's almost like... Well, ya know how stray cats kinda get used to humans once they hang around 'em for a while? Do NOT compare me to a stray cat. Right! Sorry. But look, the folks in this here castle are a nice bunch, yeah? That's probably startin' to rub off on ya. Yer startin' to open up and all that. Me? Open up to THEM? As if I... Oh. Stellar work, Ezelith. It's hard to imagine we both have the same amount of experience. That's right, keep the praise coming! Yeah, so what if you made a mistake? Just keep at it until you don't! I was just thinking that it's unusual for you to be encouraging someone. I guess I just felt like it, is all. You got a problem with that? (Is that what happened earlier when we were making those cakes? I didn't really think much about WHY I encouraged her, but was it because I was thankful to have been praised?) I'm right. Ain't I? As if! Bwaaa ha ha! Ya may not wanna admit it, but us old men can be pretty sharp. Don't start acting like you've got me all figured out or something! ...Though you MIGHT have let me take the first step in getting my feelings in order. Boy, ya really have trouble bein' honest with yerself, don't ya? Well, guess that's what it means to be young. Hmph. Just keep talking! Anyway, I've got something I need to do. Hey, maybe I should try joining in on that. But who should I thank? This is wonderful, Ezelith! Thank you! Yeah, I guess he would make sense. Plus, if I make him something, he's sure to love it! All right, I've made up my mind! I'm going to make the prince the best chocolate treat the world has ever seen! Right! First things first, I'm going to need some ingredients. Rovetelle should have the best selection around here. Oh, look! That stall has everything I need! A genius graces your store, shopkeep! Give her the best service you can muster! Welcome, welcome! If you're baking sweet treats, you'll find all you need here! Is this to be a present for your boyfriend, perhaps? B-boyfriend?! How dare you?! Pray forgive this humble shopkeeper, madam. Now then, what do you need? I want to make some chocolates, so get...whatever I need for that. Then you ARE making something for a loved one, at least! I am NOT—and I will thank you to stop presuming to know my intentions! This isn't for a loved one, a boyfriend, a fiancée, a paramour, a beau, a flame, an inamorato, or anything else of the sort! It is merely a token of my thanks. Eeep! A thousand apologies, madam! I clearly jumped to conclusions, what with Valentine's being so close and all. Chocolate IS the traditional go-to gift for people to confess their feelings, you see. It is?! Indeed. Er, but if that is not your intention, perhaps you wish to make something else. Umm... No, it's fine. I'll stick with chocolate. Ugh. That stall owner really threw me off my game by saying all that stuff. I wasn't even thinking when I said I'd stick with the chocolate. Oh well. I've got the ingredients, so I might as well make it. ...But is he going to get the wrong idea when I hand this over? Thank you, Ezelith! I'm so very happy that you feel this way! Oh, you... Don't go reading too much into this, now. Oh, Ezelith. Aaargh! C-Cleo! That's quite the full bag you have. Have you been shopping? Keep your eyes off my bag, peeper! ...Have YOU been shopping?! I have. We used a lot of ingredients earlier, so I needed to purchase more. Oh. I see. Well, I'm in a hurry, so...bye. If you're planning on baking something, why not do it with me? Pass. This is going to lose all meaning if I don't make it entirely on my own. You sound just like Elisanne. She said the same thing earlier, and now refuses to accept even the smallest aid from me. Speaking Up

That's my chocolates finished— and neatly wrapped, to boot. The appearance, taste, texture, and nutritional value are perfect. I've amazed even myself, and that is HARD! But now that it's time to hand it over, I'm starting to feel nervous... I guess the best thing to do in these situations is deliver it nonchalantly. Like, "Oh, hello! I didn't see you there! Want some rando candy?" Chocolate is the traditional go-to gift for people to confess their feelings, you see. Ugh! Why did I have to flash back to that just now?! This is just to express my thanks— there's nothing else to it! Getting all nervous and self-conscious isn't like me at all! C'mon, Ezelith! Just deliver this to him and get it over with already! Hey! Euden! Morning, Ezelith. Can I help you? I...um...want to give you someth— Uh oh! Is someone up to some serious early-mornin' biz? Wh-what are you doing here, Ranzal?! I've been standin' here literally the entire time. (Ugh! And I didn't even notice him... How could I have been so careless?!) We're actually off to clear out the storeroom, so... Oh, right. See you later, then! Ugh, ugh, ugh! How did I get so flustered that I didn't notice RANZAL of all people? Next time, I need to make sure the prince is alone before talking to him. ...There he is, resting under a tree. And there's no one else around! This is as good a chance as any, so here goes nothing! Did you finish tidying the storeroom, Euden? Hey, Ezelith! Yes, we just finished. Come to think of it, didn't you have some business with me? That's right. I wanted to give you— Ohmigosh, look at all the fruit in this tree! Wow! That's great, Notte! Aaaargh! I didn't even think to check IN the stupid tree! Heya, Ezelith! Did you come here to take a nap, too? That was the original plan, but I think I've changed my mind now. The fruits of this tree are all cute and sweet and they taste amaaaazing. Here, you can have some too! Ha haaaaa... Thanks. That was so careless. Hmm... Perhaps trying to catch him outdoors is a bad idea. If I can catch him in his ROOM, no one is going to interrupt! ...Are you here, Euden? And are you alone? Just me at the moment. There's something I wanted to giv— We've got trouble! There's a group of fiends advancing through the woods! The person who came to tell us said there haven't been any casualties yet, but there's a nearby village, so I'm still concerned. We need to move out at once! Sorry, Ezelith. Could you give us a hand? ...I suppose I'd better. Thanks! I'll go on ahead! I'm sorry for this, but this is an emergency, so I didn't have much choice. First it's people intruding, and now it's fiends. Why does this keep happening?! My timing is as bad as my brain is incredible!

Episode 5

Spreading the Love

We've got trouble! There are more fiends coming from that direction! MORE?! How many times is this?! Thanks for telling us, Notte. I hate to ask this of you when we're all exhausted, but we need to keep going for just a little bit longer! (And how much longer will I have to wait to finally catch him alone?!) Alas, Ezelith's laments did nothing to stop the fiends from pressing their attack. *pant* *pant* Having to fight this many battles in a row is rough... Are you okay?! Keep it together! Don't worry about me. This is nothing. Oh nooo! We've got more fiends coming from over that hill! We need to fight them off and protect the villagers. Let's go! (If these damned fiends didn't show up, this would have gone perfectly!) Raaaaaagh! This is all your stupid fault! Squeak? You're doing this on purpose, aren't you? You're getting in my way ON PURPOSE! Graaagaraaagh! NO EXCUSES! You're going to pay! Raaaaagh! Whoa. She's seriously scary right now. You're telling me—but we've got to fight just as hard. Follow her lead! We did it! The fiends are gone! That big lug Ezelith just took out must've been their leader. Everyone should be safe now. Good work, everyone. Thanks to all of you, we kept that village safe. Thank you for the help, Ezelith. *rumble* Heh. I guess I'm hungry after all that. That's no surprise—you didn't even have lunch before heading out to battle. Oh... In that case, why don't you have this? Are these chocolates? Oh, thank you! Oh wow. This is amazing. ...Really?! Yeah! It tastes like there's dried fruits and nuts inside it, too. The level of sweetness takes away your fatigue, but all the textures really make it interesting to eat. Hey! Gimme a bite of that! I would also like to try these chocolates, if it isn't too much trouble. The two of you are forbidden from taking so much as a single nibble. Hey! Ya want me to waste away over here? Ezelith made these especially for— They can have some. Er, are you certain? Yeah. Heck, it was thanks to all of you that I even thought of making it to begin with. I suppose I could stand to give you all a bit of thanks at least once a year! Dish 'em out, Euden! Okay. Here you go, everyone. Whoa! This is the stuff! The chocolate cake you made the other day was exceptional, but this has a certain charm all its own. I was exhausted before having this, but now I'm totally full of beans again! You're right. It just took a single bite. Well, um...I'm glad. I DID put a lot of effort into them, after all. We should start takin' these chocolates with us when we go out on patrol. I agree. Plus, they are nice and small, so they won't weigh us down. In that case, I shall work on preparing some for future expeditions. Might you teach me the recipe, Ezelith? I'd be glad to! This will be reassuring to have when we go out to fight. Thank you, Ezelith. (That ended up going nothing like I planned it to, but...
