Dragon Story Episodes
A Guardian's Promise
Deep within a vast forest, secluded
from the outside world, there lived
a single dragon.
She was the forest's guardian, and
her name was Sylvia. Kind of heart,
she loved both nature and solitude,
and drove away any human who
sought to enter her home.
As a dragon, she had witnessed
humanity's history unfold for
centuries, and had seen their
foolishness, selfishness, and desire
for conflict first-hand.
"If fighting really is human nature,"
she often thought, "then I will do all I
can to keep them from this place,
so that it may continue to be one of
peace and tranquility."
But one day, a group came to the
forest who were very different from
all those she had seen before.
The gentle woman leading the group
lowered her head deeply to Sylvia.
"Guardian of this forest," she said,
"pray grant we sylvans leave to live
here, for we have heard much of it."
Grastaea was then a land of strife,
with large nations fighting for control
of the continent. Their homes razed,
the sylvans had no choice but to
seek refuge in the woods.
Sylvia was a kind-hearted dragon,
and seeing pitiable sylvans free of
malice and ill intent, she could not
simply turn them away.
"Very well," said Sylvia. "You may
live here. But I have two conditions.
You must promise to avoid conflict—
no matter how trivial—and you may
not bear arms of any kind."
Without hesitation, the sylvans threw
away their weapons. In truth, they
bore them only for self-defense, and
knew they were useless against foes
of even the slightest strength.
Thus, the sylvans built their
settlement deep within the forest and
began to live side-by-side with Sylvia.
The sylvans were filled with kindness
and love at the dragon's gift,
and went on to live in harmony
with one another.
They also respected Sylvia and all
the forest's creatures—as well as
nature as a whole. And seeing
their way of life, the dragon was
forced to rethink her views.
Clearly, not everyone was worthy
of contempt; some loved peace and
nature just as she did. Realizing this,
Sylvia swore to be the guardian of
the sylvans as well as the forest.
Just then, however, tragedy struck,
for the flames of war finally reached
the forest in which she lived.
A group of sylvans came to Sylvia's
forest fleeing war, and she permitted
them to settle there provided they
lived free of conflict and did not
bear arms of any sort.
Seeing their way of life, she had been
forced to accept that not all people
were despicable, and so swore to
serve as their guardian.
However, the war they had fled
showed no signs of ending, and
finally reached their new home.
At this, Sylvia immediately rose
up to defend them.
"You have nothing to fear, sylvans,"
she assured them. "For no matter
what may come, I will keep you
safe from harm."
But Sylvia had underestimated the
evil a human heart is capable of.
For it was not an army of men that
arrived in the forest, but legions
of fiends under their command.
The battle between nations had
become so fierce that they had
begun to fight using fiends—and
Sylvia's forest had tragically become
the site for their latest battle.
The fiends trampled the forest like a
great storm, and much as Sylvia
tried, many sylvans lost their lives.
She was filled with regret, for the
sylvans had no means to defend
themselves. If she had permitted
them weapons, however weak,
perhaps some might have lived.
"If I hadn't forced them to give up
their arms..."
"If I hadn't taken away their only
means of defending themselves..."
Sylvia went to the sylvans' leader—
who had barely survived the battle—
and asked them to take up arms in
self-defense once more.
"You may one day be faced again
with a disaster I cannot save you
from," she said. "And if you do not
have the means or the will to fight,
you will perish."
"I believe in you. I know you will
not use those weapons for your
own self-interest like savages.
Instead, you will use them only to
protect that which you hold dear."
Thus the sylvans once more took up
arms—but only to protect others from
conflict, as opposed to causing it.
Within their kindness, they also
possessed great strength and
courage—and that courage still
persists in the sylvans who live
in that settlement today.
