The Beauty Contest Begins

Me too! Me too! No, do me next! Pleeease! The hell's goin' on here? Yeah, what's with all the ladies? Everyone, please be patient. I'll see each of you in turn. Ah! It's Verica! She must be doing readings for everybody. Noice! Yeah, but that ain't the only thing they're here for. Take a look at that sign! "Welcome to the Annual Beauty on the Beach Contest"? Apparently it is a tradition in these parts, and this year's contest is being held today. And all these gals came out to sign up for it, eh? Verica has been telling the contestants' fortunes while they wait. Bwa ha ha! That's shrewd! I like it! Er, so when's this beach shindig start? They appear to be starting the registration process just over there. Welcome, everyone! Welcome to our annual Beauty on the Beach contest! If you think you're more beautiful than the sea itself, sign up and prove it! I'm gonna CRUSH this year's contest, brah! CRUSH IT LIKE A TIN CAN, WOOO! No way, brah! You're lookin' at the champion of the beach right here! Uhhhh...what are all those burly dudes standing in line for? The sign DID say the contest was open to all, but this is...not what I imagined. Huh. Yeah, that's...unexpected. Okay, okay! Form a line and... Heh! You there! ...Yes, YOU! What are you doing? Er, me? Registration is over here! Hurry, before it's too late! Oh, no. I'm not entering. Are you SERIOUS?! What's the point of holding a beauty contest if a beauty like YOU isn't going to enter? Now get in line already! Gwargh! Uh, that guy just dragged Verica away, and I am NOT cool with that! Can you draft somebody to be in a beauty contest? Is that even legal? We'd better go check on her. There she is! Oh man, she don't look happy. Let's get over there, stat! Look, I'm begging you here! Please just enter the contest! PLEEEEEEEEASE! I can see how important this is to you, but I'm really not— The Beauty on the Beach contest has been a tradition in these parts for an age! It's supposed to be about finding a true paragon of beauty—someone as pure as the sea itself. But over the last few years, it's devolved into a convention of protein-loving bros flexing their well-oiled glutes and pecs! Well, that is certainly...an image. Most ladies don't even bother to enter anymore. For the last decade, our final match has been bro against bro! Well, hell. That's just tragic! I fail to see how. I like muscles as much as the next person, but this simply has to stop. That's why we need someone with enough real beauty to take down their muscle beauty. That's why we need YOU! I really don't know about this... ...The big day is here at last, everyone! Welcome to "Beauty on the Beach"! Now put your hands together for this year's contestants! ...... I can't believe that guy managed to sweet- talk Verica into entering this thing. Well, since this is her decision, I guess we should root her on. Hey, looks like there are actually some ladies participating this year! Yeah, and look at HER! What a knockout! Looks like the crowd's diggin' Verica. Man, it'd be pretty wild if she actually ends up winning. It's odd to see Verica up in front of all these people. She usually prefers to support others from behind the scenes. I wonder how this is going to play out? ...... Now then, people! Which of these beauties will receive the blessings of the summer sun and emerge triumphant?! We'll find out, when our world-famous Beauty on the Beach contest continues!

Episode 2

Into the Spotlight

Verica has been convinced to enter the annual "Beauty on the Beach" contest. So far, her staggering beauty has been toppling rivals left and right. Damn, brah, check that lady... It's like starin' at the SUN! Even my most musclebound muscles can't compete with beauty like that. Guess I'll have to keep swingin' this axe around 'til I'm toned enough to compete in next year's contest. And the winner is...Verica! Ha ha! Looks like another chump has thrown in the towel! Keep it up, Verica! You can do it! Heh... *siiigh* Nice job, lady! Woooooo! Huh? What are all of you doing here? Please don't tell me you've come to watch this contest. Well, at first we came to save you from that total creeper who runs the thing, but once you agreed to enter, we changed our minds and started cheering for you. Oh, but this is so embarrassing... You're doing really well, though. Next round is the finals, yeah? You're totally gonna win this thing! I, um... Oh, goodness... Hey, so what's the deal with all the bashfulness? You're doin' great! I'm afraid I simply can't get used to this sort of thing. As a fortune-teller, I support people from behind the scenes—and am unused to being the center of anyone's attention. Yeah, I guess I can see that. Verica! Oh, hello again. You came to see me for a reading earlier, yes? Yep. But I didn't know you were actually gonna ENTER this contest! It was never my intention to do so, but the organizer was very persistent. WAS he now? Hmph! Well, whatever the reason, it doesn't matter...because I'm going to beat you! I have to win this contest, no matter what! I'll see you at the finals! Ooh, so that's your final opponent, huh? Sounds like she really wants the win. She must, if she beat all those muscle bros in the earlier rounds. As I said, I will never be used to this. Eh, I wouldn't sweat it. Gettin' in yer opponent's head is part of competition. Quite right, Ranzal. But at this moment, I think we should listen to the crowd! VER-I-CA! VER-I-CA! You see, Verica? They love you. You should feel quite proud. Yes, I...I suppose I should. We're all excited to see how far you've come, Verica. I know you prefer to work behind the scenes, and this is probably a long way from your comfort zone. But I also think we all deserve a moment in the spotlight now and again. Thank you, everyone. Your kind words truly mean the world to me. I admit, as someone who is used to providing encouragement, receiving it feels more than a little strange. But now I feel as though I have the strength to go on, so go on I shall. On to my moment in the spotlight!

The Fairest

We've reached the final round of the Beauty on the Beach contest! Let the ultimate battle begiiiiiiin! This one's for all the marbles! Now then, let's meet the two beautiful ladies who have emerged from the battlefield that is the beach! First, we have contestant #5, the stunner of the seashore...Angie! Tee hee! I'll do my best! Next we have contestant #260, a woman as enchanting as a cool ocean breeze...Verica! Er, it is a pleasure to meet you all. This is our first all-female finals in a decade! But who will emerge victorious? That's for YOU—the audience—to decide! You know what that means, ladies: Time to win over the crowd. Hi, everybody! I'm Angie, the stunner of the seashore! I can't TELL you how much it would mean to be this year's Beauty on the Beach! I hope I can count on your support! You're the beeeeest! Goodness, I'm ready to vote for her right now! But next, it's Verica's turn! Er, hello. As a fortune-teller by trade, I don't have a tremendous amount of experience with this sort of thing. But hearing all of your cheers has filled my heart with courage. So I hope to steal the spotlight, just this one time. We love you, Verica! You're the best, Angie! Wow, listen to those cheers! Clearly both of these ladies have won a lot of hearts! That brings us to the moment of truth... Let the voting begin! Verica... Angie... Angie... Verica... Right now, the vote is tied... but we have one ballot left! It all comes down to this! This year's Beauty on the Beach is... Vericaaaaa! It... This can't be... I'm sorry, but I haven't voted yet. ...And I'm voting for Angie. OOOOOH SNAAAAAAP! The prize was hers for the takin'! Why would she DO this?! V-Verica? Why? Angie, why don't you tell everyone why you're so determined to win this contest? Huh? When you explained it to me earlier, I found it impossibly cute and endearing. I suspect that everyone else will be similarly charmed. ...Go ahead. W-well, you see, I'm... I'm actually really shy. But something made me gather up my courage and enter this contest. I had a message that I wanted to deliver to a certain someone, but I knew that I wasn't yet ready to do so. Oh man, is this going where I think it is?! Look at the longing in those eyes... The woman is clearly in love. Before this, I couldn't find the courage to confess my love to him. He just meant the utter world to me. So I challenged myself to become a person who was as strong as my feelings for him. *sniff* Ah, young love... It's the damn best. I remember how anxious I was when I first told my boyfriend I loved him! She needs our votes! The female vote appears to be shifting dramatically towards Angie. Folks, this is unprecedented! And yet, all the votes have been cast... Surely you cannot ignore the will of the people?! You seem much more energetic now that you're arguing on behalf of someone else, you know that? Are you certain about this? You were going to win, you know. Quite certain. I think I'm just happier letting others enjoy the bright lights. Well, in that case... Our winner is Angie, the young maiden in love! I...I won?! REALLY?! Now you can tell him how you truly feel. Oh, thank you, Verica. Thank you, everyone! I wish I was the guy she loves! Yeah, I wanna see whoever this mystery man is! Tell him now! Confess your love! TELL HIM! TELL HIM! TELL HIM! R-right here and now? I mean, I see him out there, but... You have all the courage you need. It's so strange, but I feel like I could do absolutely anything with your support. So I'm going to do it! What, THAT'S how this ends?! Give the people what they want, man! Their happy faces have convinced me that this was the best possible outcome. Do you think Verica perhaps foresaw how all of this would play out? If so, I'm in awe of her talents. And so, the "Beauty on the Beach" contest ended...er...happily for everyone involved?

Episode 4

Like the Sea

Really, Verica. Thank you so much. You have to stop crying, Angie. Your new boyfriend will worry about you! Oh, that's okay. She's always been quick to cry ever since we were kids. When she told me she was entering this contest, I didn't know what to think! I thought I needed to change for you to like me. But I've been in love with you forever! There is nothing more beautiful than two people in love. I hope that you have a long and happy life together. Thanks again, Verica. Maybe we'll meet up again someday! So they were both in love with each other the whole time? Love is weird, man. I find it adorable for a childhood friendship to blossom into romance. Why, it's just like a novel! Nicely done, Verica. We saw the whole thing. Thank you all for your support. I still can't get over how close you were to winning! Castin' yer own vote for a rival? Sure didn't see that one comin'. All of the contest's ups and downs had the crowd going wild. But are you sure you don't mind giving up the crown like that, Verica? I don't mind at all. You're really takin' this in stride. Being able to support Angie made me far happier than winning some contest. It also made for a wonderful summer memory. So letting someone else have the spotlight made for a better memory? That's SO Verica. Guess we all got different ideas about what makes for a good memory. But Verica definitely takes top prize when it comes to helpin' others! That she does. Thank you all for saying so. And of course, it was wonderful being able to shine brightly on a stage, if only for a moment. But while I admire that, it is not the sort of person I could ever become. Instead, I will keep doing what only I can do. Guess we all gots our own way to shine. Much like the ocean, in fact. The daytime and sunset seas are each beautiful in their own way. I think it's best that we all just support each other however we can. What a lovely way to look at things. Somehow, the ocean looks even more beautiful now than it did a moment ago. It sure does. I'm so glad we came here.

A Shining Heart

What does fate have in store for me? Oh my! Nooo! I'm cursed! Darn it, I KNEW I was cursed! Huh? Oh, no! I'm sorry I scared you. I see no ill portents in your future. I can see that you've had a string of bad luck and much to worry about. However, the stars have shifted, and your fortunes along with them. A bright future awaits you now. Well, that's a relief! And you're right— Lady Luck has certainly NOT been my friend lately. But if you say my luck has changed, then all is probably well! Just don't forget to do your part to make each and every day all it can be. I won't. Thank you, Verica. See you next time! Verica? Hello, Cleo. How long have you been standing there? Since you began telling fortunes. I can't put my finger on it, Verica, but you look different from how you usually do. How so? More beautiful, perhaps. Have you changed something? I've had that selfsame thought myself. Are you doing something different? I don't think so. Maybe it's the way we perceive her that's changed, and not Verica herself. I'm not certain I follow. His Highness is saying we see her differently after what we learned during our trip to the beach. Ah, now I understand. And I agree— it's hard not to see her fortune-telling as being all the more lovely now. Well, thank you for saying so. It is we who should be thanking you for giving us this new realization. Exactly. Thank you, Verica. I never imagined I might still be learning new things at my age. Heh. Verica! Ah, my next client has arrived. Will you excuse me? Verica sure seems busy. It's because so many people rely upon her. Her trustworthiness is yet another one of her many charms. She happened to be wearing her swimsuit on the day of the contest, but I doubt it had any effect on her success. She is a beautiful and captivating individual, regardless of attire. You're right, Elisanne. Even though she prefers to stay behind the scenes, she still shines brightly enough to illuminate us all. She does indeed! She really is extraordinary.
