Episode 1

Cats on the Waves

We've made it to the beach. The cat we're looking for should be around here. Mineuchiii! Mineuchi, hearken to me! Easy, Mikoto. Word around town is that the cat can often be found here. It's a pretty tall tale, though. Can't say I've ever heard of a cat with a penchant for wave-riding. Most felines loathe water's liquid embrace, but not my Mineuchi. He would oft splash about through oceans and rivers alike. And back when I would practice slicing the sea in twain, Mineuchi would skillfully use boards from destroyed ships to navigate the raging currents. (Did he just say "slicing the sea in twain"?) Look! Over there! H-hey, wait— Aaand he's gone.

Hm? Who are you folks? Are you the one they call Surfer? The owner of the cat who rides the waves? Er, well, that's just what they call people who ride the waves, it's not my actual name. But I mean, yeah, I am THAT surfer. So what can I do you for, bud? We're here to follow up on a rumor. Have you seen a skinny black tomcat around here? He answers to the name Mineuchi. Huh. So you're not with those dudes who came by earlier, then. Er, which "dudes" would those be? Oh, sorry, bro. Just thinkin' out loud. Anyway, I hate to say it, but I don't think you'll find the cat you're after 'round here. Saw one like it a while back, but it scampered off to who-knows-where. Darn. I guess the trail's gone cold. Meow. Sir, if I'm not mistaken, that cat's countenance suggests that it has something to say. Oh, yeah, totally. He's yowlin' at me for a little tandem riding. My cats always go out surfin' with me. Sounds like our cue to give you some space, then. Happy surfing, sir. 'Preciate the good vibes, but I'm nursin' a bum foot. Don't think I'll be out on a board anytime soon. Meow. I feel bad for these little guys, but it ain't like we've got anyone else around here who can surf, so... I'll do it. Uh, what? I'll take your place. I will traverse the seafoam with your cats. Bro, no way! It's way easier said than done! You're not—wait, ARE you a surfer? Fear not. In attaining revelation, I have become as nature itself. The sea is but a part of me. I...ain't got a clue what that means, but I can tell you've got the soul of a surfer. Paddle on out and show me how hard you can shred!

Our days spent living in harmony with the ocean feel like they were only yesterday. Even so, our companionship was predicated upon more than a mutual love of the beach. Only... I didn't realize it. I poured my heart into my training, ignorant of how much I valued him, and then before I knew it, our paths had diverged. It was only when I lost him that I at last realized just how much he meant to me. Perhaps Mineuchi sensed that I took his presence for granted, devoted as I was to my training. In a word, I was unworthy. I failed to be for Mineuchi what you are for those cats. Listen, bro. I dunno your whole life story, but here's the thing about cats— they decide for themselves exactly where they wanna be and when. And if that Mineuchi of yours is alive, I'm sure he's out there livin' his best life. Meow. The cat chose to be with you, and then chose to set off in search of new horizons. That's not on you, my dude. I do not search for Mineuchi solely because I feel responsible for his fate. I will find him— And then what? You're gonna yank him outta his new life and bring him back home to you? You really think that's gonna make him happy? ...... Look, bro. I can tell you ain't the kinda guy who goes around messin' with cats and their happiness. ...Unlike those mental dudes from before. You let slip something about them earlier. Of whom do you speak? Just a couple of bennies some rich dude hired out. They heard the rumors about surfing cats and showed up to sniff around. They didn't know the first thing about my furry friends, but they tried to take 'em away just the same. They're the punks who raked me over and messed up my leg. Have they come back since then? Not since you showed up. If I had to guess, they're probably stayin' in line since they can tell you ain't some ordinary grom. Good. May it remain that way. Mineuchi is a truly singular entity. He is a cat among cats: his graceful figure looms black as night, with omniscient eyes that watch the world. In truth, I did not expect we would find him, given that I have already been pursuing him tirelessly for many years. But even so, you still came here to search for him. Of course. I would follow any lead in my quest to reunite with Mineuchi, no matter how outlandish. I regret how things ended between us, and I vow to never let that happen again. If that's how you feel, I'm certain you'll find Mineuchi. And I'll keep helping— Meow! Oh? Hello there, kitty. This is one of the cats from the beach. It remembers that I caught a fish for it. But...why are you here, little one? Meow! Meow! Is it trying to tell you something? What?! Danger on the beach?! Then I must hurry! What?! Hey, wait, Mikoto!
