The Paladyn's Vacation

Ahhh, but this sea breeze does feel divine. It has been one battle after another lately; we've scarce had time to catch our breath. Is it so terrible a thing to take a moment of rest and relaxation when one can? *sigh* Oh, how beautiful Elly looks surrounded by all that sand. No summer bloom can match the beauty of my Elly—nay, not even the sun itself! *siiigh* Was that a sigh? Is she weary?! She certainly has every right to be; the path of a Paladyn is a harsh one. And she has walked that path for years and years—a heavy burden indeed! We'll not be at the shore for long, so it is essential she be able to enjoy this hard-earned holiday. But what can I do to bring Elly the relief and relaxation she so richly deserves? Perhaps she'd enjoy an ocean swim? ...No, that might only exhaust her further. Clearly sunbathing is the answer! ...Ah, but what if she gets burned? Blast! I fear this is beyond me. Hmm... I see she has yet to remove her top outer layer. As a Paladyn, she might consider it immodest to show more skin than absolutely necessary. ...Yet by the goddess, look at ME! She must think me a vulgarity of the highest order to be dressed so! I specifically brought my finest suit so as not to embarrass myself in front of Elly, yet perhaps it was still a mistake. Am I too ostentatious?! You've been mumbling to yourself for a long time now, Julietta. Everything okay? Gaaaaah! Y-Your Highness! How long have you been standing there?! I just walked over now, actually. You looked sort of distraught, and I wanted to see if I could help. D-distraught?! I am not distraught at all! I'm perfectly traught! One hundred percent! Soooo I DIDN'T just overhear you say something about your swimsuit maybe being too ostentatious? Y-Your Highness, I am a Paladyn! I would not trouble myself with such trivial concerns! It would not even occur to me to worry if Elly thought I looked like the lowest village guttersnipe in this suit! That thought is literally the furthest thought from my mind. My family went on vacation to the beach every year. I have many happy memories of those times. Then why not invite Elisanne to do the things you remember enjoying? Because she may not find them as enjoyable as I did. And what if she turns me down entirely?! Julietta, Elly LIKES you. She's not the sort to refuse an invitation from a friend. With the conditions being that you cannot hold the ball or let it fall on the sand. I see. That does sounds like fun. If you're sure I would be an adequate choice, I would love to try it. R-really? I'm so happy that... Uh, I mean, of COURSE it will be fun! It was my idea, after all. Well, it looks like this all worked out. How about I keep score? Gettin' a game of volleyball going, eh? Count me in—I'm a spike MACHINE! What?! Er, I mean...that's fine, Luca, but we need an even number of players. Looks like I've just been drafted. You mind keeping score, Notte? You betcha! Whaaaaaat?! Er, is something wrong? A THOUSAND apologies, Elisanne! That was the basest form of ball hoggery! Forgive meeeeeeeeeee! I am very confused right now. She probably thinks she ruined the game for you by monopolizing the ball. Oh, but I don't care about that one whit! Julietta, come back! ...Julietta?

Episode 3

Seaside Teatime

What was I thinking?! The entire point of the game was for Elly to enjoy herself! It accomplishes nothing if I am hogging all the fun. Perhaps volleyball was a bad idea; it got my competitive juices flowing. But there might yet be a way for me to get Elly into the vacation spirit! ...Oceanside afternoon tea? That's right. It's about that time of day, wouldn't you agree? It's something I make a point to enjoy whenever I visit our private beach. Here, permit me to fill your cup. This is...black tea? Ah, but not conventional black tea! This has been ice brewed. It's an especially refined and extravagant way of making tea in which the leaves are steeped by water from melting ice in order to extract a fuller flavor. Well, that DOES sound extravagant! I am eager to try it. *sip* My, it's much sweeter than normal tea! That is because of the ice brewing. By steeping it slowly and at extremely low temperatures, one can prevent the usual bitterness from emerging. And all the extra time and trouble results in a superior flavor. Yes, I quite like it. Thank you for introducing this to me. I shall have to try making some myself. I am so pleased that you enjoyed it. ...But then again, it WAS my idea, so that comes as little surprise. (I did it! Elly REALLY liked it! This experience will surely ease her into a state of relaxation that... Huh?!) *sniff* What IS that enchanting smell? And is that smoke I see over there? *sniff* It has a savory aroma. Almost like...barbecue? Okay, we're just about ready! Dig in, Euden! We got plenty! Wait, there actually IS a barbecue? Oh, this is horrible! The delicate flavor of my tea can't possibly compete with this! Er, shall we move upwind, Elisanne? I fear the smoke here is beginning to interfere with the aroma of the tea. A fine idea. This should do! Now I'll just lay out the tea again and... Ah! The wind is picking up! AND it has shifted directions! Whoa, that caught me by surprise! You okay there, Ranzal? What matters is that the GRUB is all right. Time to throw the next batch on the grill! And now the smoke is in our faces again. That's it—I am going to complain! I don't think that is necessary. But it is! You can't possibly enjoy the aroma of the tea under such conditions! I don't mind, Julietta. Truly. Euden! Ranzal! Hmm? Something wrong, guys? Once you appreciate the delicate charms of ice-brewed tea, you will understand the damage caused by your filthy smoke! Secret of the Cove

Oh, whatever am I going to do? ...No. Don't give up yet, Julietta. There's still a chance to turn this around! It was a mistake to think of relaxation ideas that involved crowded public spaces. However, this is no time for regret; it is a time for action! ...You wish to take me somewhere? Er, might I ask where? You will see when we get there. Come! ---- Hmm. It seems we have arrived at an abandoned cove. Exactly so! I discovered this myself, so I don't think many people know of it. It's quiet, and there's a lovely breeze. The perfect place to take a nice walk and unwind, don't you think? I suppose so. But why bring me here? Oh, uh... So we can concentrate! After all, a Paladyn must preserve her composure at all times. I figured a quiet cove would be the perfect place to take a walk and calm both our hearts and our minds. You are truly a model Paladyn, Julietta. Eeeeee! *cough* Er, I mean... I am nothing so special as all that. I simply strive to consistently maintain proper Paladyn standards of behavior. A very admirable attitude. I'm not going to pity you, Julietta; but I also won't leave you like this. If your stomach hurts so much that you're nearly in tears, there's clearly something serious going on. Prince Euden... *sniff* I'm sure Elly is completely disgusted with me. Oh? And why is that? All I wanted to do was give her a chance to relax from fighting. But all I DID was ruin her holiday! I was trying to give her a good time, but ended up only thinking of myself. I caused her no end of stress, and even put her life in danger! What kind of holiday is that? I've made her more tired than ever! She must find me utterly exhausting. She told you all that? Well, no. Not with words, anyway. But I am certain she thinks it.
