Huh? I can hear a bunch of voices up ahead. No one disturbs the peace of the forest on MY watch! I'm going to complain! Hey, they're all wearing the same stuff. Who ARE these people? Listen, everyone! Listen to me! Oh. Hello, Maribelle. Cleo! Did you make any treats for us? I've actually baked a berry pie. You like those, don't you? I LOVE 'em! Yaaay! Thanks, Cleo! ...Wait, no! That's not why I'm here! I saw a group of people all wearing the same clothes. Do you know who they are? The same clothes? Yeah! They were all bunched up in one corner of the forest wearing the same outfit. Do you know anything about 'em? I'm afraid I haven't the faintest idea what you're referring to. I also saw these people. Oh hey! Welcome back, guys! I think the folks ya saw are students. ...Students? People who attend a school—a place one goes to increase their knowledge. There is just such a school in Rovetelle on the edge of the forest. Students often wear the same outfit, which is known as a school uniform. I imagine the people you saw came here to gather herbs for one of their classes. A uniform, huh? That's SUPER cool! I wanna wear a uniform! I dunno. Ya might still be a bit young. Nuh-UH! I'm an adult! I wanna wear a uniform right now! I wanna, I wanna, I WANNAAAAAA! Your adultness is really shining through. ...However, if you truly desire a uniform so badly, I could probably craft one. Really?! You could?! However, it will take me a few days. Make me one! Pleeease! Very well. Let me take a look at the uniform of the schoolchildren you saw and go from there. While I'm doing that, you should learn more about what it's like to attend school from Euden. Yay! I'm gonna learn everything there is to know about schools! ...School? Well, it's a place where you go in order to study and make friends. Wait. You make FRIENDS there?! Sure. I mean, when you attend classes with kids your own age, it's only natural.

Might you come here for a moment, Maribelle? Is my uniform done, Cleo? Woooah! Mostly, but I need you in order to perform a proper fitting. This is SOOO cute! It looks just like what all those students wore! Well, it seems to fit all right, so I just need to make a few finishing touches. Then I can go to school! ...Oh? I didn't realize that was part of the plan here. What? If you're wearing a uniform, you get to go to school, right? I wanna go make new friends! I'm afraid it may not be quite that simple. You will need the school to approve your admission, as well as the permission of your parent or guardian. That'd be yer granny. So if Granny says it's okay, I can go to school? Uh, sure? Probably? So long as the school's okay with it, I guess. I'm gonna talk to Granny right now! Byeee! Maribelle, wait! *sigh* Too late. She must really have taken to that uniform to be running off in it when it's not even finished. We need to bring her back. It won't do to have her running about in unfinished work. Are you guys sure she's ready to be headin' off to school on her own? Perhaps it was a mistake to craft that uniform for her... Don't worry about it, Cleo. This is something Maribelle decided on her own. All we can do is watch and support her. I just hope she's all right.

Permission Slips

Urgh... I take it your grandmother did not approve your enrollment? Yeah. She said I couldn't because of something about mana and towns. What?! That sounds like horse plop! Remember that we are dealing with an elderly woman and her granddaughter living in the forest. She likely has concerns we aren't privy to. She's raising Maribelle entirely on her own, after all. Blaaaargh. Listen, Maribelle. What? You clearly want to go to school, yes? More than anything! Can you tell me why? Because all I know about this world is the forest! I wouldn't have known anything about schools or uniforms if you hadn't told me. And if I don't get out into the world, I'm never gonna learn about it. That's no good! I'm an adult now! ...Or at least I wanna be. Those are good, thoughtful reasons. Perhaps we should speak to your granny and see if she will change her mind. ...What? I'm sure she has reasons for not wanting you to go, but if we can address them, she may change her mind. You're gonna help me?! Of course. Friends help each other out in times of trouble, right? They sure do!

This way, Granny! My my. So this is the Halidom, eh? Good afternoon, ma'am. I am... Well, I guess you could say this is my castle. Many thanks for helping to take care of my granddaughter, young man. Now then! Why am I here? We wanted to talk to you about your granddaughter's desire to go to school. I'm afraid I don't much like the idea. It's for her own good, you understand? See, my little Maribelle is very sensitive to mana. And I'm afraid these old bones are too slow to rush to her aid if something were to happen while she was at a school in some village. If she ever strays from the forest, there will be nothing I can do for her. But what if we support her in your place? You would? Yes. I'll make her lunch every day, for one. And should the need arise, I will go to pick her up and see her safely home. And I'll...uh...hang out and eat a lot! Which is a very underrated skill. Dude, you're gonna scare the old lady! Why would you go so far for her? Because she's our friend. Is she now? Everyone here is my friend, Granny! But if I can go to school, I can make MORE friends! And that'll help me be an adult! Hmm. I see. I reckon you've gone and grown up right before my eyes and I haven't noticed. Mayhap that's just the way with children. And we want to help her grow by showing her the world. Will you at least consider it? ...... Very well. So long as you're ready for the work, I'll leave Maribelle in your care. Thank you! Thank you, Granny! And everyone else! Now that you've come all this way, ma'am, won't you please stay for tea? Ah. Might you be Cleo, young sylvan? How do you know my name? I've known of you for a long time now. Thank you for always baking such wonderful treats for Maribelle. I'm truly relieved to learn what kind of folk are watching over her now. I've always felt uneasy for her future, what with knowing my spirit will return to the forest before hers. I don't quite follow. As one of the beings who dwells in this forest, I'll be able to keep watching over her, but no longer extend a helping hand. Still, while I grew up in isolation, she's surrounded by friends. Even if she leaves the forest and goes beyond my reach, I know she'll be fine. Something about your mana feels... Wait, are you— Heh heh. I leave Maribelle in your care, child of the forest. And as a child of the forest, I will honor your request. ...But even if I wasn't, I would do so anyway. Because she is a dear friend to us all.

Episode 3

Graduating from the Forest

I've got my books and my quills. Now all I need is... All ready for yer first day? Yup! I can't wait! Bwaaaa ha ha! Yer almost there now. Oh, but have ya told all the forest critters that yer gonna be takin' off? Nooo. Why would I need to? Yer gonna be busier than a one-legged man in a butt-kickin' contest, kid! Ya won't have time to pop in on yer animal friends whenever ya want. I...won't? No! Yer gonna be studyin' in the morning and crammin' at night. Life's gonna be real different for ya from now on. But I don't WANT that! Hey! This whole deal was YER idea! If ya wanna be an adult, ya gotta suck it up and stick to yer word. Ain't always fun, but that's just the way of it. ......

...... No uniform today, Maribelle? I don't know what to do. What's wrong? You look ready to cry. I can't go to school anymore... I don't WANNA go to school anymore! Okay, what's going on here? Talk to me. Ranzal told me that if I go to school, I won't be able to see my forest friends every day like I always have! But...but it was my bunny friends that helped me learn to like vegetables! And my bear friend saved me that day I got stuck in the tree! And...and there was that time I played hide-and-seek with the deer and got lost... But the deer was really soft and warm and we took a nap and then the birdie came to find us. I LOVE my forest friends! I don't wanna leave them! You clearly care about them a great deal. I know. And that's why the thought of never being able to see them is so... No! Nothing's worth that! Have you told the animals about this? Did you tell them how much you care, and also why you want to go to school? ...No, I guess not. Well, why don't you talk to them about it and see what they have to say? They're your friends—I'm sure they'll have a lot of good advice.

...Okay. I'm sorry for not talking to you all earlier about wanting to go to school. I mean, I'm happy I get to go—I am. But knowing I won't be able to see all of you as much makes me not want to do it. It's just so sad! Cheep cheep! Hmm? What do you want, Mr. Birdie? ...Eeek! Stop poking me with your beak! Squeak! Augh! Why are you all pushing me?! ...Wait. Are you all trying to tell me that I SHOULD go to school? And that even if we're apart, we'll still be the best of friends? Academic Anxieties

It's okay, it's okay, it's okay... Kid? Hey, kid! Eeek! Wh-what is it? Damn, kid! Yer more high-strung than a soprano violin. I know it's yer first day of school and all, but ya gotta try and calm down, yeah? I-I'll be fine! ...Probably. It's almost time to set off, Maribelle. Are you ready? No, I'm... I'm okay to go. I'm a little worried about her. I don't blame you. This will be her first time surrounded by children her own age. ...Great. Now I'M getting worried. You think we should help her? I don't think our getting involved here will do her any good in the long run. What if we follow her from a distance? Surely that won't do any harm? Good idea! We'll just hang back all sneaky-like unless she needs help. I suppose that would be okay... All right, let's do it! Hmm... Okay, I think it was this way? Well, she chose the right path. That's a good start. It's a straight line from here on out. She can't possibly get lost now. Now we just have to hope she's able to interact with other children her age. Aaargh! You guys are so nervous it's starting to make ME nervous! ...Hmm? What was that? Grrr! Great fuzzbutts! It's a bear! Baaaaah! A deer?! Squeak! Cheep cheep! Okay, the hell's goin' on? I've just never touched a bunny before. You don't have bunny friends? Seriously? No. Who has "bunny friends"? I don't think there's a single rabbit anywhere in this whole town. Yeah, I've never even seen one up close. Hey, so how SHOULD I pet him? Let me show you. In fact, I'll teach you anything you want to know about animals! Yaaay! Teach me everything! Looks like she's back to her old self. That's great. Yep! I wasn't worried for a second! Yes sir, ol' Notte knew this thing was a slam dunk from the moment we set out. I mean, heck, she's got an entire crowd of people AND animals helping her out. She couldn't possibly fail! So long as she's her usual self at school, I think she'll be just fine. Seems like a good first day all around. In that case, let's head back. ...Oh, and I have OTHER animal friends, too! Like birds, and deer, and even a bear! You're going to be just fine, Maribelle.

Friends in All Places

HEED MY CALL! The hell's gotten into you, kid? Huh? Am I doing it wrong? Ha ha! Welcome back, Maribelle. And these must be your friends. Hello! Yep! I brought some of my new friends from school! Woooah. You must be SUPER important if you've got friends who live in a castle. Hee hee! Oh, and can we please have something to eat, Cleo? When I heard you were bringing some friends, I set about making a number of different cookies. Yaaay! Still, why don't we take these cookies to the forest and have them with tea? I'm sure your animal friends are quite eager to see you. Yay! Let's go, everyone! You too, Euden! Aw, there's a deer... Whoa, and a BEAR! Are these really your friends, Maribelle? Yep... C'mere, everyone! ...... It's okay—they can be your friends, too. Just put your hands out and pet 'em. A-are you serious? That's a BEAR! It's fine. We'll do it together. Whooooa. He's so soft! Hee hee! And now that you're all friends, we can play together! I'll teach you all our forest games! Okay! Well, they seem to be having fun. It's nice to see so many friends together. Maribelle now has friends in the forest, the castle, AND the school. And that circle will only keep growing. She has a special talent, it seems. Yeah, she does. Stop talking over there and come play with us already! Heh. Sorry. We were just impressed about how many friends you have now. I KNOW, right?! At first I was really scared that it wouldn't work out, but then it did! And now I want even MORE friends! I wanna make friends with everyone in the entire world! Well, if anyone can do it, it's you. Hee hee! Maribelle! Come see this! Coming! How wonderful it would be if the whole world could become friends. Though I agree, such an ideal has never felt so far away as it does in this war-torn world we live in. Maybe we just think that way because we aren't Maribelle. She's pure, innocent, and devoted in everything she does—she might actually be able to pull it off. Boys and girls, people and animals! Gather around me! I've got SO MANY friends, and I'm going to get SO MANY more! I can't wait!
