Life With Brothers

Hell yes! It's finally time for a breather! I tell ya, comin' back home to kick yer feet up does a man a world'a good. I understand what you mean, Ranzal, even though I have only been staying at the Halidom for a small while now. It seems like you're fitting in well with everyone here, Sharena. I certainly am! The people here are all lovely, and I hope to become friends with them all! You see things a little differently from Alfonse, don't you? Do I? How so? Well, I always got the impression that he drew a fine line between faith in one's allies and actual friendship. Yes, my brother did often remind me not to get too attached to our Heroes. But he has his ways, and I have mine. Bwa ha ha! If yer lookin' to become friends, it's way too late for that. Once ya fight alongside someone, yer ALREADY their friend! Truly? Oh, thank you, Ranzal! Aaaargh! Knock it off, Sarisse! I'm sorry! Forgive meee! There's no use arguing! You addlepated lunkhead! Gwaaah! Goodness, that was quite the racket! Are you all right, Luca? Ha! Just business as usual around here. Don't worry about it. Er, but it appears that Luca's eyes have rolled back into his head. ...... Ha ha...ha? Yeah, maybe I whacked him just a little too hard there... Ranzal and I will carry him to his room. Hey, thanks, Euden. Ranzal said this was "business as usual," Sarisse. Are you and Luca often like this? Yeah, I guess you could say that. He does something boneheaded, then I give him the business. But that's what brothers and sisters do. I mean, don't you and Alfonse ever fight? Honestly, not really. In that case, we should have a brother swap. You can spend your days getting mad at Lunkhead Luca, and I can float around agreeing with Mr. Perfect. In truth, I'm jealous of your relationship. I've never really connected with my brother in that fashion. Sharena, this is NOT a good thing! Trust me, it's waaay better to have a grown-up older brother like Alfonse. But Luca is so good-humored and considerate of you. And Alfonse is serious and grown up! He HAS to be the better brother! It's true that my brother is kind and hard- working, and always looking out for me as we work together in the Order of Heroes... Are you not tired, Sharena? Do not overcommit yourself, Sharena. Are you well, Sharena? ...But he's also a rather chronic worrier. You might even say he doesn't trust me. Just like Luca! That dope ignores my feelings, does and says whatever he wants, then takes off on his own and makes me worry! Grrnghf! I-I give up! I was wrong! M-mercy! Ho, Sarisse! I'm glad you're safe. I was so worried. Stay the hell away from my sister! Haaah! Luca's a bonehead... And brash... And sort of stupid... And a child... But sometimes he can be pretty cool. But just sometimes! Like, I'm talking mega ultra TURBO rare occasions. Usually he's just a big ol' meathead. Heh. It seems you two are actually quite close after all. Man, now you've got me all worried about how hard I whacked him... I'm sure you'll patch things up in no time. After all, he's your older brother. You think so? Perhaps you can bake him some treats by way of apology. My brother always loves it when I bring him homemade treats, and I'm sure Luca would as well. Hrm... Luca was the one who messed up, but I DO feel like I overdid it a little... So yeah, it might actually be good for me to apologize somehow. But wouldn't he think it's weird for me to suddenly do something like that? If you poured your heart into them, I'm sure he would love it. Yeah, maybe. But I ain't exactly Cleo when it comes to the ol' kitchen. Well, I'm something of an amateur baker. Perhaps we can make them together? Really? That would be great! Oh, it's so good to be making real friends here! You can double that feeling on my end! Well then, let's get over to the kitchen and see about those treats. Heck yeah!

Treats Galore

Look at all these delicious baked treats! Oh man, they smell sooo good... Makes me wanna take a bite! Well, I suppose it's only right to try them before serving them to others, yes? Don't have to tell me twice! *chomp* Agreed. *nibble* Hmm... Well, they're certainly sweet enough—and delicious in general— but they also might be a touch dry. Hmm, yes. And if they're dry fresh out of the oven like this, the issue will only be worse once they've cooled down. OUTTA THE WAY, FOOLS! NOTTE WANTS TREATS! Stand down, Notte! I'll not have you going overboard with snacks before dinner. Cleo! Just the woman we wanted to see! Can you try one of these treats and let us know your professional culinary opinion? Well, I suppose one won't hurt. *munch* Hey, no fair! What about MY professional culpability opinion, huh?! Ha ha! Very well, Notte. Open wide. Well? Do you like them? They're quite good, but I believe you need to heat the oven longer before putting them in. If an oven is not sufficiently preheated, your dough will slacken, and it will also take more time to cook, causing them to dry out. See, I knew you'd be able to help, Cleo! Right then. It's on to batch number two. These are going to knock your socks off! Well, I have a number of chores to attend to, so I will check in on you in a while. Oh, and dinner is still on the way, so do try not to make TOO many sweets, yes? You got it! ...If this is your idea of "not making too many," I shudder to think of your idea of "a lot." Er, sorry. We sort of got...carried away. "We have too many treats" is a SUPER weird complaint for something this delish! Seriously, Cleo, your tip about the oven was right on point. I tell you what—these puppies look so good, I could horf 'em all down right now. Please do not "horf them all down," or I fear you will not be able to eat your dinner for a week. That being said, these aren't the type of thing that will keep well, so we'd best decide what to do with them in the very near future. I take full responsibility, and will consume every last one to ensure none are wasted. You can't eat all those—you'd explode! There's enough here for like fifty Nottes! And speeeeeeaking of Notte, she's more than happy to help with treat disposal. No. This is my fault, and I can't impose on anyone else to fix it. I disagree, Sharena. These treats were a group effort; there is no need for you to take full responsibility. Oh, Cleo... Also, your plan is simply untenable. You cannot eat this many treats in one sitting—I don't even think Ranzal is capable of such a feat. In that case, what say we hand 'em out to Halidom folks and the nearby village? That's a great idea—even a mountain of treats like this is no match for that many hungry mouths. Then let us divide them up and begin the deliveries at once. Treats such as these are better when fresh, after all. Thank you all so much. Aw, it ain't no big thing. Friends gotta come together to help each other when the chips are down, after all! In that case, I'll do my best to make sure these snacks find their way to all those happy stomachs! ...Well, we've certainly cut down on the number of surplus treats. And while the residents of the Halidom were certainly glad to receive them, I wonder how things will go here. I wouldn't worry. There are a number of children in this village, and I've never known a youngster to refuse a treat. Whoa, something smells goooood! Where'd you guys come from? As if on cue! We have come from the Halidom in the Mistholt to deliver treats to all of you. Whaaaaat?! Treeeeats?! Yes, and they're all homemade. Please take as many as you like! ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW?! Hoy, what's the meaning of this?! Who said you could talk to my boy?! I assure you, sir, we meant no harm. We were merely— Causin' trouble is what you were doing! We've no need of you Mistholt types here, so get lost and forget the way back! Dammit, boy! How many times have I told you not to take things from strangers?! I'm sorry, sir. Go on home, now. Get! Well, he was a rather wary fellow. Do we truly look so suspicious? Um, sorry about my father, ma'am. It's only natural for a parent to teach a child not to accept things from strangers. In that case, we'll just have to ensure that we are NOT strangers. Huh? Greetings! My name is Sharena! And what is your name, young man? Um, I'm Mathias. Mathias, is it? Well then, it seems we're proper acquaintances now—or perhaps even friends! And what could be wrong with giving treats to a friend, mmm? Goodness, but this is all being laid on a bit thick... What's wrong, Cleo? This is a perfect plan, is it not? Yeah! You're my friend now, which means my father can't be upset with me! While you are observing the letter of the law, you trample the spirit of it in the dust. There is no way this boy's father will ever fall for such a ham-handed runaround. Then if he gets angry at Mathias, I will bear that anger alongside him. For that is what true friends do! *siiigh* Well, as there is CLEARLY no talking you out of this, I suppose I should go along. Three can bear the brunt of anger better than two, after all. Exactly! Now then, Mathias, reach your hands in there and take all the treats you can handle. Thank you, ma'am! *crunch* *munch* Er, do you like them? Oh yeah! They're as good as Mom's! Really?! Oh, but I'm so delighted! Thank you for saying so. *sigh* Goodness me. (This little escapade is all well and good, but I can't help wondering why Mathias's father was so upset with our being here.) Eeek! Careful, now! If you jump at me, the treats will end up on the ground! Honestly, what ARE you doing?

Tandem Lances

Hah! Yah! Taaake...THIS! You are working quite diligently, Princess Sharena. Lance training, is it? Elisanne! What brings you here? I heard the treats I received the other day were made by your hand, so I wished to express my gratitude in person. They were absolutely delicious. You came all this way just to say that? Ha ha! Perhaps I should be thanking you! But more to the matter at hand—your lance skills are nothing to scoff at. Did you study under a master? My teacher was a man named Zacharias. He was an old friend of my brother and me, and a member of the Order of Heroes. He WAS a member? My apologies. I did not mean to open old wounds. Oh, it's all right. Don't worry about— Guys! GUYYYYYYS! We got fiends attacking a village, guyyyyyys! I shall rally the others at once! Dude, there ARE no others! It's just you! Everyone else is out dealing with the fiends popping outta those space hole thingies. In that case, Princess Sharena, I fear I must beg your aid in this matter. Of course. We'll depart at once. ...Fie, but there are far more fiends here than I anticipated. If we don't act quickly, the casualties will be terrible indeed. We should split up. I will divert the fiends' attention while you lead the villagers to safety. I cannot permit you to take on so many fiends at once! Even our combined might cannot hope to stop all of these fiends, Elisanne. Our only hope is to have one of us serve as a distraction. Though it pains me, I hear the truth of your words. Let us do as you suggest. But if you get even the slightest sense that the danger is overwhelming, you must promise to call for me! Come, fiends! Meet your true adversary! Haaaah! Hrk... I'm not finished yet! *pant* I'll be honest... This isn't going... quite as well as I'd hoped... But I'll not be laid low so easily! If I can just buy a little more time, all the villagers will be able to flee! Oh, blast! Haaaah! I believe that was the last one. Are you hurt, Princess Sharena? I'm fine, thanks to your good work. I am pleased you are well, but that was just the kind of dangerous situation where I asked you to call out for me. Why did you not do so? Because it would have delayed the evacuation of the villagers. Perhaps I underestimated the situation, but I did not wish to trouble you. I understand, but would think it a failure of your priorities if they led to your injury—or worse. If you agree that we are comrades—which I dearly hope you do—then I would have you turn to me whenever you are in need. There can be no holding back. ...... Were my words overly harsh, Princess? I apologize if so. No, you're right, of course. And if I'm honest, I'm really happy that you think of us as comrades. You can count on me to hew to that relationship in the future. A Grave Error

*pant* *wheeze* Damnation... This wasn't supposed to happen! I need to get out of here and report back to the main force before... Huh?! Look lively, fool! Gwaaargh... Right-o! Think that about takes care of all the baddies around here. How's it going, Ranzal? Mopped 'em up but good, boss! Looks like you cleaned up all right, too. All the enemies have been dealt with. That being said, why would imperial troops be hiding in an area like this in the first place? Intelligence gatherin', most likely. They spy on us, then run back to mama if they see anything outta the ordinary. But we sure took care'a that! ...... *yawn* Anyway, let's truss 'em up and go get ourselves some grub. ...Hrk! Aw, hell! Can't believe I fell for the ol' "pretendin' to be unconscious" bit. Get back here, you! Not likely, pal! I've got legs of lightning! We're losing him! Damn, he IS fast! This punk's already put a wall between us and him! A wall... Wait, that's it! *wheeze* Think I...lost 'em... Now to get back to base and— Yaaaah! She took the damn wall down! Gotcha! Gaah! You did it, Sharena! That's the last bad guy down. Can't believe you made a shortcut by plowin' through some old ruin. That's thinkin' outside the box— or hell, outside the WALL! Still, I'm certain my older brother would have handled it even better. Ain't no need to be modest here. Strut around! Ya earned it! In that case, I will do so! Huh? Who's there?! Wah?! No! S-stop! You're Mathias's father from the village! Guy don't look like he's with the imperials, so what's he doin' here? I was just bringing food to the soldiers and... Oh, dear Ilia. Please tell me you didn't defeat them all! Actually, yes—we did defeat them all. Is that a problem? What have you done...? I don't understand. Sir, please explain what you mean. The village elder needs to hear this. Come with me—we can explain everything once we arrive. ...... The hell's wrong with this place? Not only were ya goin' along with the imperials hidin' out in that ruin, ya went and brought 'em FOOD! We had no choice: Our village would have been razed to the ground had we tried to take a stand against the Empire. Ya coulda tried tellin' us about it! And if we had told you? What then? Likely you would have met the threat with force, which could have led to the exact same outcome. I thought it better to submit to the Empire rather than resist and face certain death. So what will you do now? ...Enough. Begone from here. The matter does not concern you. Hey, the boss is tryin' to HELP ya! This village's future will be decided in a discussion amongst its citizenry. I'm sorry, but I must insist that you leave. Very well. You sure 'bout this, boss? No matter how good our intentions, we're no better than the Empire if we force them to bend to our will. They deserve to make their own choice. Can't say I much care for it, but yer the boss, so... ...... ...... Shake some dust, Sharena! We're headin' back to the Halidom. Yes, I know. It's just that... Well, I have a friend named Mathias in this village, and I was hoping to have a word with him before I departed. Should we wait for you outside the village in that case? No, please go on. It should be quick, so I'll just catch up to you later. Gotcha. Don't be too long, yeah? ...... Our village is doomed... Doomed! What do you mean? Gah! You again! ...Well, hell. I suppose there's little point in hiding it now. The soldiers in those ruins were under orders to report back to the main force on a regular basis. Now that you took them all out, that can't happen. And once they don't report back, the main force will come here and wipe out the entire village. But why? Surely this village— Because that was always the agreement! All they needed from us was to shut up and let the force in the ruins do its thing. Now that they're gone, we have no purpose at all. They'll brand us traitors and kill us all as a lesson to everyone who would think of standing against the Empire! But surely they wouldn't...? Yes! They surely WOULD! You think we're the only village under the thumb of the Empire? They'll sacrifice us to serve as a warning to the rest of them! It will be bad, bloody work. Young and old, man and woman... None will be spared. That's so cruel... And it's YOUR FAULT!  ! If you'd left even ONE of those soldiers standing in the ruins, we might have a chance—but you and your merry band went and took that from us! I know you had good intentions, but... Oh, damn it all! What are we to do?! You will take every last person in the village and flee to the Halidom. We can protect you there. And what of the elderly? The children? They'd never be able to keep up on a march such as that. Regardless, I'm going to return to the Halidom and speak to the prince. I know he'll be able to come up with something. ENOUGH already! You have done ENOUGH! Please, I beg of you, stop meddling in our affairs and just...leave us be. Then...what should I...? Do? There's nothing you can do. Just listen to the elder and go home. ...... Sharena, what were you and my father talking about? What's going to happen? Mathias, you... ...You are going to be fine, so put your cares away. I will find all the bad people and make sure they leave you be. Really? Of course! There is no foe I wont stand against if it means saving a friend! Wait, is she going by HERSELF? Oh no... I gotta do something!

Heroes of All Sorts

C'mon, how much trouble can one girl give us? It's going to be past nightfall by the time we reach the village! If she's reckless enough to take us on by herself, we'll just overwhelm her with our superior forces! *pant* *pant* Look, she's gettin' tired! Push the attack! *pant* *pant* No matter how relentless the assault, I will never stop fighting to protect my friends! Why?! I told you all this before, boy! We don't have the means to fight. So if the Empire wants something, we just lie down and let them take it?! If the choice is between that and death, it is no choice at all. Fine, then! I'll go alone! You will do no such thing! But Sharena's out there fighting those bad Empire guys all by herself! What?! She went to take them down by herself so she could save her friends! That woman is a damn fool... No, she's not! She's my friend, and I'm going to help her! Come with me, Father! Help me! Take everything you're feeling inside and use it to do something good! ...We can't do it, son. Not alone. But Father! Urgh... I'm wearing out... This is the end for you!  ! Gaah! Of all the... YOU! Don't fight alone! Surround them and keep close watch on your neighbor! Are you okay, Sharena?! Mathias, you brought the entire village! I still think you're a meddling outsider, but you're also clearly my son's friend— which means we can't leave you to die. I asked my father to help you and he said yes! But now you'll be caught in the fighting... Aaagh! You pathetic hayseeds are no match for the might and glory of the Empire! Call for reinforcements! Don't stop until the ground runs red with their blood! This is terrible! I came here specifically to AVOID this outcome, but now... We knew what we were getting into. We don't have the means to fight. Alone, the best we can hope for is to buy a little time. No... You know what it means to risk your life for a friend—and I bet you have friends of your own who feel the same... Alert! We just received notice that enemy forces have overrun our HQ! Of all the... HOW?! Looks like we're just in time. You continue to treat us like strangers instead of friends, Sharena. What are all of you doing here? Did I not say before that I would be there during your darkest hour? Ain't like us not to come runnin' when a friend's in trouble! How can there be so many of them?! THIS IS JUST ABSURD! And we've plenty more where they came from! Oh, but this is so inspiring! The Empire's attention was diverted because you were fighting them here. That allowed the rest of us to sneak up and get the drop on them. On top'a that, the villagers came to us rarin' to go. With them keepin' the soldiers busy, their HQ was prime for the taking! All of this is because of you, Sharena. Your natural magnetism and leadership has moved mountains. Oh, I'm so happy! *sniff* Ugh, and now my nose is all snotty... It's too soon to be letting up yet, folks. Let's wipe the floor with whoever's left! Yes! Here we go! Ha ha! That was toooo easy. Thanks to all of you! Really? Ha ha, truth be told, I'm exhausted... But exhilarated at the same time! Spoken like a true hero. Whaaat?! It's true, ma'am. We never could have done all this without you. You took on a whole array of imperial soldiers without so much as blinking! You saved so many lives! AND you overcame a desperate situation with quick wits and true talent! You really were amazing, ma'am. Like a hero from a faerie tale! They're right, Sharena. You're a hero today. Heh heh. I, um...thank you. But still, if not for you coming to my aid, this tale would have a very different end. I was only able to persevere because all of you were there for me. Which makes us ALL heroes. Heh. I can live with that. Does that mean I was a hero too? Of course it does!
