Episode 1

The Potential of Youth

In the Halidom, Renee—the youngest of the three blacksmith siblings—is working as hard as ever. I restocked all the charcoal, Ramona! Thanks, Sis. Arise, O flame! Can you give me a hand here, Renee? Eldest Blacksmith Sister Rena I need you to put all of this equipment away. You got it! I'm almost done here, Renee! Are you ready to cool it? Yessss! It's Renee's time to shine! (It's my job to cool the heated steel, and it's SUPER important! It's pretty much the most important part of our whole deal! ...Um, probably.) My apologies for the intrusion. Golden Armorer Malka I need help with a couple of rather simple tasks, and I thought Renee might— Hey! My job is NOT simple, mister! Hey! What's your deal, Renee?! Now, now, you need to be polite to guests. ...Understand, Renee? Eeek! S-sorry! Honestly, I do not get you sometimes... Now then, how can we help you, Malka? I was hoping Renee could help me repair some armor. I hear you excel at providing support, so I expect great things from you. And you're gonna get 'em! I mean, I'm not THRILLED to be doing "simple tasks," but I can't say no when someone's asking me for help. That's what I wanted to hear. ...Or mostly, at any rate. Then let's get busy! So you just want me to repair all of this damaged armor? Easy-peasy! It may not be as straightforward as you believe. Each one is damaged in a different place, which means you must address them in different ways. Huh, okay. Well, I'll give it a shot! Okay, lemme see... Looks like fasteners on this one are broken. This'll be a cinch. You worked that out quickly— and fixed it with skill, as well. Hee hee! My sisters have me well trained. Right! Onto the next one! Looks like the belt snapped from being under too much pressure. Maybe I'll try to strengthen it by putting two pieces over one another... And nooow... Oh, this one just has a dent. Hammering it back into shape from the other side would reduce its durability, but if I mix in melted steel... Fascinating... Not only can she judge how to fix them, she instantly comes up with a method of reinforcement as well. Her potential is limitless! Hey! Are you making fun of me?! Heavens, no. I speak only the truth. The difference between you and myself at your age is impossible to overstate. Sooo, I'm a great blacksmith? You certainly are—helping your sisters has clearly given you a solid foundation upon which to build. Bleeech. You make it all sound a lot less cool. Listen to me, Renee: Experience is the fuel that makes artisans grow. It is? Indeed. The more experience you gain in your youth, the more potential for growth you will have as an adult. And with your potential, you are on the way to becoming a first-class blacksmith! So if I experience loads of stuff, I could be an AWESOME blacksmith one day? Precisely. And given a wide enough variety of experiences, you may even be one who goes down in history. Then I gotta get going NOW! Oh, I don't think there's such a great hurry. You just SAID I have to do more than smithing, right? So I'm gonna go back to the castle and do WHATever with WHOever! Er, that wasn't exactly what I— Hee hee! I'm gonna be the best smith in the world before you know it! Byeeee, Malka! Thanks for the tiiiip! *sigh* I do wish she would work on listening to others. The experience I spoke of was focused on smithing, not...random tasks. Still, experience in itself is no bad thing; I hope she finds nothing but success. ...... Hey! She didn't finish these repairs! *sigh* I suppose I'll do them myself...

The Little Big Sister

Malka says that if I want to be a great blacksmith, I need to go out and experience lots of new things. So what should I start with...? Oh, hey! That looks like Estelle and some kids over there. If My Sisters Were Perfect

Renee found a lot to admire with her elder sisters in terms of how they behaved inside the smithy. Once they left it, however... Ramonaaaa! Get uuuuup! Gimme five more... Zzzzz... No! Get up! Ugh! Why do we have to do this every day?! Mmmm... Hee hee! Sounds like someone could use a cup of tea to help them get up. Great idea, Rena. Lemme just... Um... Yes? What is it? PFFFFFT! Bleeeeech! I knew it! You mixed up the sugar with salt! I most certainly did not. Then why are you holding a saltshaker? I didn't mix them up—I did it on purpose! I thought the salt would help her get up. Oh! Well, if that's what you did, then... Wait, that's a TERRIBLE idea! Ugh! Why are you always like this?! Mmm... Gimme more...pancakes... Ramonaaaaa! Get up right now before I throw this salty tea in your dumb face! Alas, once outside the smithy, it was Renee who had to look after her elder sisters. Urrrrgh. Ramona is SUCH a slob once she knocks off work! And Rena is...well Rena's Rena even when she's at work... I have to work ten times as hard just to make up for them. If they were both more dependable, I could go out and have a BOATLOAD of new experiences! Hmm... Imagine if they were... Good morning, Renee. Mmm... 'Morning, Sis... Ah, there is nothing better than starting a day as the sun peeks over the horizon. A loss of discipline in one's daily life will surely appear in one's work. That is why an artisan must always be early to bed and early to rise. Hee hee! You always have been super disciplined like that, Ramona. Good morning, my dear sisters. I have prepared breakfast. We have fresh sausage from the market and scrambled eggs laid only yesterday. Yaaay! You're the best, Rena! Mmmm! This breakfast is yummy! Ahhh... I'm so lucky to have two perfect sisters... Oh man, that would be the BEST. I'd totally be able to leave everything to Rena and Ramona. It'd be just like this... I have finished all of the cleaning! And I have completed the washing! Ninja Knowhow

Well, I've experienced lots of things, but I need to try something bigger! But what should I... Oh! Is that Aoi? Ha! Yaaaah! Impassioned Ninja Aoi She's from Hinomoto, and a...ninja or something? I wonder if she's training? I don't even know what a ninja IS. Also, her weapon... It's kinda unusual? Well, I guess this is just my chance to have a new experience with a ninja! Aoiiii! Can I talk to you for a minute? Heck yeah you can! What's up? I wanna know all about ninjas. So, um...what are they? Hey, cool! I didn't know you were interested in ninjas! Okay, so the main thing you need to know is that ninjas live in the shadows. Like, you don't go in the sun? Hee hee! No, it just means we never let the world know that we're there. We protect our masters in secret! Cooool... So can I experience being a ninja? I gotta try lots of different things if I want to become an amazing blacksmith. Of course! Just leave it to me. They say that teaching others helps you learn more yourself, after all. And I still have a ton to learn, so maybe teaching you will help me bone up on all of that stuff. Yaaay! Thanks! All right, let's start with the basics. Your first lesson is hiding! I can't WAIT for this! So first, you need to stand with your back to the wall. Got it. What's next? Now take this cloth and hold it up. It has the same pattern as the wall, see? Ooo, we get PROPS? That's awesome! ...Also, I think I see where this lesson is going. Now put the cloth over your head aaand...boom! You're done. Behold the mystical ninja art: The cloth of concealing! You know, for a mystical ninja art that seemed sorta...I dunno. Basic, maybe? What else you got? Not a fan? Well, there are plenty of other techniques I can show you. Would you prefer to cling to a ceiling or hide in a swamp? Both require great patience, but not much else. *sigh* I'll just stick with the cloth. Great! Now put it over your head and stand...perfectly...still. Knowing how to hold your breath and stay still is an essential skill for a ninja. Oh man, I'm not good at staying still. How long do I have to do this? Just give it your best shot. Okay, I'll try. One...twooo...threeeeeee... Aaaargh! I can't do this anymore! ALREADY?! I'm sorry, but this just isn't me. Do you have anything less...ninja-y? Well, what about elemental escape arts? Ooh! That sounds interesting! Sweet! Then let's go into the courtyard so I can explain them one by one. ...So those are the basics. Did it all make sense? I might have understood better if you used more words and fewer sound effects. Er, but I THINK I get it? It's pretty much how Ramona talks about mana, anyway. I'll start with the flame one. ...Haaaah! Ooo! Nice. And now the wind one. ...Haaaah! Wowzers! That was amazing! Next is water! ...Haaaaah! Oh, I'm not done yet! Raaagh! Ah! Yaaay! I'm a genius at ninja-ing! The water one was definitely the easiest. Probably because I do all the cooling whenever we forge weapons. Soooo? Whatcha think? That... Yeeees? That...was...AWESOME! You're a natural! I've never SEEN someone with your potential! Aw, you're gonna make me blush. You should totally become a ninja! Whaaat?! We need to start a proper ninja training regimen right away. We'll work to become the best ninjas ever together! Wait, no! My dream is to become the best BLACKSMITH ever! Oh, right. I forgot you already had a goal. But hey, if you ever change your mind, you know where to find me! Right, I'll keep that in mind... Some time later... Huh? Who's there?! ...Aoi! I know you're on the ceiling! Get down here right noooow! Ha ha! Well done, Renee! You have spotted me again! It doesn't take skill when you have a ninja following you ALL THE FREAKING TIME! Nope! You've got true talent. I feel really...heavy... *cough* *hack* Oh man, you have a serious fever. I bet you caught a cold. Renaaaa! Ramona has a... *cough* *hack* Uuurgh... Oh no! Not you, too! Right then. Stay in bed, you two. I'll make you something to get your strength up and find clothes that aren't covered in sweat and ick! ...Okay, that's sorted. Don't worry, I'll be by your side until you get— Wait, I don't have TIME to be at your side! I gotta finish these weapons! But if I'm the only one able to work... Oh man, this is baaaaad. We've never been in so much trouble! Well, there's only one thing to do... I'm gonna make the weapons myself! If we don't make this deadline, no one will ever trust us again! Okay, Renee, you can do this... You can SO do this! Everyone says you're a genius when it comes to smithing, so it's gonna be fine! Time to get to work! I'll put all my knowledge into this! All my experience! All my dreams! All of it...into...thiiiiiis! Raaaah! ...I did it! It's finished! Hee hee! All I did was try to mimic whatever my sisters do, but I think I actually pulled it off! Yes, it seems you have quite the eye for this sort of thing. Hee hee! Heya, Malka! So ummm... you can keep praising me if you want. Yes, this is indeed spectacular work. ...On the surface. The heck does THAT mean?! This weapon is a failure. What? Aw, come oooon! Swing it. You'll see what I mean. Oh, I'll swing it, all right—I'll swing it right in your smug face! HYARRRRGH! Oh man, this thing is SUPER wonky. It won't even swing right. Do you see now? The center of gravity is completely misplaced; it would be a death sentence to wield this in battle. But I tried soooo haaaard! There's no need for such disappointment; this is stellar work for one of your age. You were able to perfectly replicate the appearance of your sisters' weapons. Given enough time, you might— I don't HAVE time! If this isn't done now, the entire smithy goes under! Which is why I am here. I will give you all the advice you need to craft weapons suitable for your clients. Seriously?! Oh, thank you! With your help, I know I can finish the remaining ten! You have an order of TEN?! Oh dear. I think we're going to need more hands to accomplish that task. Then what are we gonna dooo? I've got you! Aoi?! Yep! Aoi the ninja, at your service— whether you like it or not. I heard you were in trouble, so I've come to lend a hand. I will also help in whatever way I can. Me too! And me! Aw, I can't believe you all came! I really need the help, so thank you. But the smithy is too dangerous for kids, so while I REALLY appreciate the offer, you two will have to stand back. You want us to watch? Booo-ring! Not if we cheer 'em on! Yeah! We could really use a cheer squad! Take up that hammer, Renee! The day grows short! Leave the furnace to me and my fiery ninja techniques. ...Haaah! Thanks, Aoi!
