Episode 1

The Radiant Sealer

I've heard complaints that you have been breaking practice dummies with your axe during training. Well, yeah...but there's no point if you don't go all-out when you train! No one's gonna get better otherwise. For a seasoned warrior like you, perhaps. But for beginners, drilling the basics slowly and carefully is how you grow. Either way, it would be greatly appreciated if you stopped breaking castle fixtures. And finally, Wu Kong. You were soaring about causing mischief on the Jindou Yun last night, weren't you? Huh? No! I never did that! Is that the truth? Of course it is! It's a big fat truth! So someone else was soaring above the village yelling "Wu Kong is in the HOOOOUSE!" last night? No! I said something totally different! ...... ...Dangit. Pfffft... Bwaaaa ha ha ha! Did you hear that, Sha Wujing? He confessed on his own! Hee hee! Wu Kong truly is a fool to have fallen for such a simple leading question. Sh-shut up! Stop laughing! Wu Kong, it seems I need to punish you for trying to hide your wicked deed. Oh ho ho ho... O power universal of the Qilin, be bound by my solemn decree! Wealth of brilliance, ring of the sun... Whoa! Master, wait! WHOA! That's the Xihe incantation! Auuughhhh! So bright! So hoooooot!! I am simply shining some light on your misdeeds. Are you sorry for what you did? Gaaaah! I'm sooooorry!

Man, your punishments have really gone off the charts since you got that Xihe. I am keeping its power under control. You would not have emerged unscathed had I unleashed its full potential. Still, it's pretty weird to see you walking around with a relic that controls the chi of light. How so? Back when we were traveling together, you always said stronger relics should be sealed away as soon as they were found. And that has not changed. While strong relics can be useful, they come with more danger the stronger they are. Okay, but why'd you decide to just start struttin' around with one? Well... This is a special exception. There were...circumstances. They must have been one hell of a set of circumstances to get you to cast your "hey, let's seal everything" bit aside. Is the Xihe's power truly so terrifying to you? What? No! I ain't scared of nothin'! Ah, I see. Well in that case, let me put your mind at ease: I will not permit the Xihe to rage out of control, even if doing so comes at the cost of my life. I-I told you, I'm not scared! I'm just... Aaaand, she's gone. Bwa ha ha! She did a hell of a tap dance around that question, didn't she? What do you want? Hey, no need to get all huffy. Makes sense she won't talk about it. She's the one always scolding people not to act recklessly, so it's probably extra hard for her to tell you her reasons. I bet you know why she's doing it, huh? Sure I do. Hell, I was there when she got the thing. Then tell me! Heh. You that worried about her? I mean...yeah, I guess I am. That relic is crazy strong, and it's a heavy burden for anyone to carry. I just don't get why she won't seal it! I know she could have done so a hundred times by now, but she won't. Guess you can't help but worry about your teacher. All right, fine. I'll tell you. But it ain't exactly a fun tale. She took a burden on herself again. That's all this story is, in the end...

A Convulsion of Nature

*pant* *pant* Hey, Sha Wujing... Is it always so bright here...? I do not recall hearing of sunlight being particularly strong in this area, no. Then why is it so damn hot?! It's been like this for days! The damn thing even shines at night. The answer is obvious: We are experiencing a convulsion of nature. Yeah, I'm aware of that—what I don't get is why it's HAPPENING. None are so cursed as the man who lacks imagination. ...Ahem! If I may? When extraordinary natural phenomena occur in regions with otherwise stable climates, it cannot be mere chaos. There is always a reason behind it. In such a case, one begins to look for external factors and causes. Now then! What objects do we know of that cause such unpleasant gyrations in the natural order of things, hmmMMM? Relics, my friend! Sweet, sweet relics! I should have known this conversation would lead us back to those damn things. You're obsessed. You know that, right? Perhaps. Ah, but there is something else at the pulsating heart of my search. For you see, where there are relics... There is also dear Master Xuan Zang, the benefactor for whom we have been searching lo these many years! Find the relics, and we find HER! I hate it when you make sense. But all right—let's get to lookin'!

Of course we were! But to the point, we believe a relic to be responsible for this recent convulsion of nature. You are correct. The abnormalities in this region are caused by the destabilization of a certain long-slumbering relic. This legendary relic is known as the Xihe, and it holds power over the chi of light. Must be a pretty fancy relic if it's threatening an entire region. It has free reign over the chi of light— one could even say it functions as a second sun. What power... What utter menace... Aaaah! My skin wriggles with delight! I see you are as you always have been, Sha Wujing. But we have greater concerns with the Xihe than mere curiosity. If we make but a single misstep in this matter, it could result in the loss not only of our lives, but the entire region. Sounds like the sooner you seal this thing, the better it'll be for everyone. Alas, the Xihe cannot be sealed. 'Cause it's too powerful for you? Allow me to explain: I would indeed be capable of sealing the Xihe if I were to bend my entire will to the matter. That is not the issue here. The issue is that the Xihe SHOULD not be sealed. Ooooo, that is SO fascinating! Please tell us more! Originally, this land was barren and fallow, because it was lacking in the chi of light. In order to speed development of the land, the Qilin made the Xihe and left it here. The Xihe has been preserving the balance of chi in this place for centuries now. If we seal it, that balance will collapse. This land will return to a barren waste, and its people will face a new, equally unpleasant type of hardship. So we must deal with the Xihe because it is creating a convulsion in nature, but doing so could create a new problem of equal destructive power. HmmmMMMM! This is quite the sticky situation indeed. Yes, these are peculiar circumstances. But as a sealer, it is my duty to find a solution. Um, I'm gonna go home now. Thanks again, nice lady! Come find me again if you need anything. Okay! ...... I fear for the lives of these people if the land returns to an infertile state. If it becomes an inhospitable place, it will extinguish all life along with it. So then! What's a sealer to do with a relic that doesn't wanna be sealed? First, I must speak with someone who may have a solution. Then I will find a way to save this land. Are you this dedicated to helping every random area that's in trouble? If the ancient Qilin abused it for their own convenience, then yes. The people that came to live here are but innocent victims, and I will not permit the whims of the Qilin to once again steal away their very livelihoods. By my duty as a sealer, I will protect the people in this region!

Episode 3

The Duty of a Sealer

Xuan Zang, we've been walking for ages. Where IS this guy? The one who can tell us about the Xihe, I mean. I asked Yulong to have him meet us in this area. My lady! Over here! Yulong? Where is our guest? Ah, Xuan Zang. I see you are as fervent in your work as ever. The same could be said for you, Xu Fu. Indeed. Once a relic begins to affect people's daily lives, it becomes an issue for all—not just sealers. Is this Qilin a sealer as well? No. However, he is most knowledgeable about dragon-vein springs, and I would trust him with my very life. You always did give me too much credit. I'm little more than a mere hermit now. Come, Xuan Zang. Let us speak frankly. What will you do about this situation? I fear a solid plan eludes me, which is why I have come to seek your council.

Your plan is sound. I will collect the Xihe and maintain continuous control of it. And I'm sure you are more than capable. However... Are you certain you wish to shoulder this burden? ...... This will not be a thing you can abandon. Once you take up the Xihe, you will carry it for the rest of your days. And if your control ever waivers—even for a moment—the cost will be your life. What?! I am aware of the risks. It is the natural function of a sealer to remove dangerous relics; there is no cost too high if it means seeing this done. Xuan Zang... Then I will not stop you. And now, I must excuse myself. I have not been here for some time, and wish to acquaint myself with the local springs. I will overcome this challenge, Xu Fu. Trust in these words above all else. ......

You're STILL not making sense. If you seal the Xihe, it won't be pretty. Folks'll lose their homes and livelihoods, and some of 'em probably won't come out of it in one piece. But humans aren't stupid. We've been wandering the world overcoming stuff for as long as there's been a world to wander. If this place used to be a wasteland, maybe it's better if it just goes back to being one. I'm just saying, this might not be the sort of problem you need to risk your life for. I know you think to speak for your human people in this matter, but this is a problem of Qilin design. The path of the Qilin is one of discipline to compensate for the long, unbroken chain of arrogance we forged in antiquity. We cannot permit our past mistakes to cause current problems for others. Yeah, and that's an honorable way of thinking—but this is your LIFE we're talkin' about here. Allay your fears. I will control the Xihe, and my life will continue as before. Now please wait here while I retrieve the relic. Are all Qilin this damn stubborn? Xu Fu certainly seemed to think she was a special case. ...Well then, my friend? What do you intend to do? It's like the wife always says... It takes a mule to stop a mule. Your wife sounds like a woman of great wisdom. Perhaps you would allow another stubborn mule to accompany you? Wait, really? You know I'm going to convince her to seal away one of those relics you love so much, right? While the thought of sealing the Xihe is vexing, we will never be able to unmask the power of Qilin relics if we lose Master Xuan Zang. Sort of a creepy way to think about it, but works for me. Let's get going! Indeed, my friend! Off we go!

Xihe's Power

The Xihe should be enshrined somewhere around here... Ah, there it is! ...How interesting. I did not expect it to take the form of a garment. Though it will certainly be easier to carry with me if I can simply wear it. WAAAAAIT! What in...? Pray forgive us, Master Xuan Zang, but we are here to stop you from claiming that relic—by force, if necessary. I told you both, this is my life's work! Yeah, well, I guess we're not a good pair of listeners. So now there's you...and there's us. What say we have a little match to see who comes out on top? If we are victorious, you will promise to think veeeery carefully about the risks of taking up that relic. You two truly never do listen... We didn't come all this way just to let you throw everything away! I owe you a debt, and I'll do anything to pay it—including fighting you! I'm actually excited to fight someone so powerful. Now let's do this! Haaaah! Gah! Ah, ah, ah! I have already accounted for you slithering off in that direction. And now, to bind you in place... Behold the Thousand Hidden Arrows! I should have expected no less from a fight with commanders of Taiwu... However! O power universal! Fire of the nine flames, stone of destruction, let thy force be manifest! Bwa ha ha! That's it?! I've been shootin' down incendiary arrows in battle since I was a little kid! (Their strength is impressive... And yet, I cannot unleash the full force of my relics here, lest I bring the entire cave down upon our heads...) (I will have to push my way through... even if it means pushing myself!) She's entering the relic's flames! I must pass...through the fire... Dammit! If we get stuck on the other side of this fire, she'll get the relic for sure! I must do this... I must be willing to sacrifice all for the sake of those people! Come on, we have to stop her! There's still time! You will not, Zhu Bajie! O power universal of the Qilin, be bound by my solemn decree. Wealth of brilliance, ring of the sun! Form a beam that incinerates all! What IS that light?! ...I can't avoid it! Argh! Sha Wujing, are you okay?! ...Aaaaarrrgh! Is this...the power of the Xihe...? ......

Still, it was hardly our best showing. You did what you did out of kindness, which is why I apologize for causing you to worry. And yet, I will still bear the Xihe. So long as there are people to protect in this land, I will give all to see them safe. Taking on the burdens of everybody isn't exactly the wisest life choice. Perhaps. And yet, I have made my peace with it. I have borne many burdens that I was glad to carry during my life, after all. Yeah, yeah, I get it. I lost. I'll shut up and letcha do whatever you want. Heh. Suppressing the abnormalities caused by relics is a duty for Qilin sealers. Bwa ha ha! I hear that stock phrase of yours so much, I could say it in my sleep! Look, you're a great person, and there's no way to count the lives you've saved. But bearing responsibility for everything and anything like that isn't good for you. It's like the wife always says to me: If you're always trying to save everybody, you eventually forget to save yourself. I understand. And yet— No, I get it. We can't stop you. But we ARE going to come with you. And if you ever find yourself in a helpless spot, that's when I'll repay my debt to you. Because that's what honor is. And I shall also follow you to the very ends of the earth! And to think there are people who consider ME to be stubborn... Well then, it seems this is the beginning of a new journey for all of us.

Yeah, I get the feeling she's always going to be in a class all by herself, that one. I just gotta somehow keep close to her and wait for a chance to repay my debt. You know, I'm pretty much just following her in the same way you are. I try to keep up, but she's so dang far ahead of me it seems impossible. But still, I... Oh! Hey, wait! Where you going?!

It does make me happy to hear. ...Zhu Bajie, what I am about to divulge to you I do so in confidence. Never utter it to him or any other. Of all the responsibilities I have taken on in my long life... ...He is the one I am most glad to have borne. It was only a few years ago that he was crying over the loss of his true parents, and now he looks toward the future with bright and shining eyes. That is why I never hesitate in bearing responsibility for the lives of others.
