Episode 1

Sparrows on the Battlefield

The Milon Plains are New Alberian territory, located directly on the border between the fledgling kingdom and the Dyrenell Empire. Several days ago, the imperial army invaded the plains in an attempt to gain a foothold in the area. The company dispatched to quell this threat is one whose deeds of valor are known across the continent: the White Sparrow Knights. Now, Vice Captain Patia leads a detachment down the area's main highway, hoping to catch the imperial force in a pincer attack. Our main force should have taken up positions on the Milon Plains by now. What of the civilian militia in the rear? No new information to report, ma'am. They appear to be making their way along the highway without issue. Understood. We'd best not slow our pace if we want to be the first ones to the enemy! A report, ma'am! The main force sends word of an ambush in the woods just ahead of our position! An ambush, eh? The imperials must have realized we'd be sending a detachment. It seems so, ma'am. They were probably placed to guard against attacks from the highway. I suppose it was too much to hope we would be able to march right up to the enemy's front door without resistance. If we fall back now, we can pass over the northern highway. It would take more time, but we can avoid a fight. Understood. In that case... ALL TROOPS! FORWAAAAARD, MARCH! Ma'am, yes, ma'am! Wait a second... FORWARD? Vice Captain Patia?! They're here! To arms! Yes, sir! Stay in formation until I give the signal! Watch each other's backs! Yes, ma'am! Their defensive posture is meaningless against our far superior numbers. Surround and crush them, men! Ah, there's the commander. Perfect. Hyaaaaaaah! Urk! Gwargh! Make light of us, will you?! Haaah! Too slow! Aaargh! Gah! She's...so fast... I have a clear path to the commander... Strike true, my blade! Haaaah! Wh-what in the—URGH! I...couldn't even draw my...sword... No! Commander! He fell? That can't be! Now, Sparrows! Fan out! Annihilate them! SPARROOOOOWS! Well, heck. Looks like the White Sparrow Corps are takin' the fight to the imperials. Uh, are we sure we wanna be here? I mean, we're just some ragtag militia, but them folks are professional soldiers. Y-yeah, I know... But we didn't come all this way just to sit out the fight! You're right... Hey, listen up, everybody! We're gonna fight! We're going to be wiped out here... Retreat! Retreeeeat! Ha! Look at them imperials run! We're tougher'n I thought! Forgive me, Vice Captain, but should we not chase down those fleeing men? If they bring word back to the stronghold, the imperials will know that we're here. The imperials predicted our presence when they set their ambush. Confirmation will make little difference at this point. Now then! To the people's militia, I say: Your performance in battle was splendid! Thank you, ma'am. Reckon I'm just glad we worked up the courage to fight. Then remember it well, for courage is the greatest weapon on a battlefield, and the shield by which you protect your fellows. From this point forward, we serve as one. All together, men! Forwaaaaard, march! Ma'am! Sir, I bring word! Patia's forces stayed the course and broke through the enemy ambush. She then joined with the local militia and continued her advance. A short time ago, her force launched an attack on the enemy's main camp. The imperials are in complete disarray! Ah, Patia. You never disappoint. Forgive me, sir, but was it not somewhat reckless for her to march directly into an ambush after being warned about it? Oh, it was completely reckless. However, it also makes a good amount of sense. How so, sir? There are multiple reasons, but first, she presumably valued the time lost to taking a detour over the danger of fighting the ambush. A detachment pulling off an assault before the main battle begins throws the enemy forces off guard and reduces the losses our main force will suffer. In addition to that, her attack served as valuable combat experience for the militia. So having the militia join the attack was just some manner of...drill? In a sense, yes. History gives us many examples of civilian militias losing heart as they face down the abyss of true battle. What do you think would happen if they were to lose their nerve? If their will to fight took flight in the midst of combat? If that happened, sir, there would likely be great losses for both the militia and the professional soldiers alike. Precisely. Which is why I suspect the Vice Captain wanted to let the militia share in the experience of a victory before such a thing could come to pass. On the battlefield, belief in oneself becomes courage—and courage is the greatest of all weapons. So while I agree that the Vice Captain may have been reckless, I also know she has a deep understanding of the nature of war. Hmm. I think I see. You've only just enlisted, yes? Let me give you some advice: If you're surprised by every little thing the Vice Captain does, you'd best grow a second heart to absorb all the shocks. U-understood, sir! Heh. Now then, we'd best be on our way. Bring word to the troops that we are to move out at once! Yes, sir! Right away, sir!

Episode 2

A Strong Will

The White Sparrow Corps secured a victory in their first battle on the Milon Plains. Thrown off balance, the imperial forces engaged in a large-scale retreat. Meanwhile, the Sparrows joined up with reinforcements led by the prince. Capitalizing on the opportunity, the New Alberian forces take the offensive and begin an advance on the Empire's position in the southwestern portion of the Milon Plains. Leif? Patia? I heard about your actions in the Milon Plains. Extraordinary work. Driving off the imperial army is no small feat, especially considering their superior numbers. The White Sparrow Corps never fails to inspire wonder. You give us too much credit, Highness. Our victory was thanks to the additional strength we were afforded by the militia. If I may, Your Highness, you might consider awarding them with medals of valor once our work is done here. You're the New Alberian army, right?! Oh, thank heavens I found you! Please help us! Our village! Those men! Soft, my good woman. Pray gather your thoughts, then tell us how we might be of assistance to you. Y-yes, of course. I'm from a small village to the east where our people have long suffered under the tyrannical rule of an imperial nobleman. When we heard the New Alberian army was coming to liberate the region, we took that moment to revolt! But our plans were discovered, and before we could take up arms, the imperial army swooped down upon us. We're dug in, but the town is surrounded. It's only a matter of time before they launch an assault and kill us all! I need numbers. How many revolutionaries are there, and how many imperials? Um... There's maybe fifty of us, all told, and probably a few more imperials. I understand. Thank you. Your Highness? Captain Leif? Please leave the matter of the village to me. I can't let you do this alone, Patia. Forgive me, sire, but we cannot afford to delay the advance of our main force. I can handle this. The imperial numbers show they're expecting a fight against a handful of amateurs, not professionals. This seems risky. Patia is right, Your Highness. You must continue to lead the main force. Very well, Patia. But I'd like Elly to accompany you, if she's agreeable. Of course. We will set out at once. Those damned imperials are just sitting there! Do they mean to starve us out? Oh, they'll come for us soon enough. We never should have taken up arms against them. We were such fools! If we surrender now, they might decide to show us mercy! The entire village is surrounded, just as the woman said. And all we have are you, me, and two other White Sparrows. Are you certain we can win with these numbers? Oh, we'll win—I'll make sure of it. However, before we act, I need to know the conditions in the village. Look there, Patia. Villagers are spilling out of that building. None of them seem to be armed. Perhaps they're planning to surrender? Bah! I won't let that happen! Patia, wait! Haaaaah! The hell?! We're under attack! What?! It's the White Sparrows! Out of the way! Everyone, look! Someone's coming! Wait, you're not an imperial. I am Vice Captain Patia of the White Sparrow Corps, and I have come to save this village! Your village is in a critical position for the Empire! You must fight to hold it! Wait, OUR village? We're nothing but a speck on the map. Perhaps that was the case before, but if we turn this village into a supply point for New Alberia, it will endanger the Empire's base further down the road. That's why they want you to surrender. But if you turn them back—if you endure— it will be a great victory for New Alberia! Victory is at hand, and we will fight at your side until it is won. Now find the justice that stirs in your hearts and fight! If we make it through this, we'll finally be free... If our little village is that important, I'll fight for as long as I can! Me too! And me! What do we do now, good lady knight? Ready yourselves for battle and await my word! But first, bring shields for their arrows! Pots, boards, furniture—anything that can absorb incoming fire! And make sure to move as a group! I don't want any stragglers! Ready? Move out! Yes, ma'am! Elisanne, take care of that group! Got it! All troops, advance! Sir, the villagers are on the move! They appear to be commanded by that knight we saw before! Unleash your arrows on that rabble! I want them all feathered like hens! Ha! Their arrows are useless! Yeeeeah! The villagers are charging our position! Such courage they show... Morale is truly a powerful force! They've split our ranks in two! Retreat! All men, retreat! Look! The Empire soldiers are fleeing! You have won the day. We did it! We really did it! We fought for our freedom and won! We're finally liberated! It is indeed a glorious day. Good lady knight, you must let us show you our appreciation. I appreciate the gesture, but I have pressing business elsewhere this day. ...Sparrows! To me! Ma'am! Stay here in case the Empire launches a counterattack. Elisanne and I will hurry back and regroup with the main force. A true soldier's work is never done. Let us be off, then!

Episode 3

A Knight's Pride

Patia? What is it, Elisanne? You are amazing. Well, this is sudden. But I'm afraid the only thanks I could offer in return for your praise would be some spear training. Ah, that's alright, I don't need spear training. I simply wish to apologize to you. Because I thought you enjoyed fighting! You certainly seemed most eager to cross swords with Empress Zethia. H-how did you...? You said you would gladly give your life for a chance to strike her, I believe? I don't... How could you possibly...?! Oh, curious little cats are always turning their ears in your direction, I imagine. That's why it's good practice to watch what you say—and about whom. Since that day, I mistook your confidence for recklessness. But the way you acted in our previous battle? Your ability to command a force? It is clear your position as Vice Captain of the White Sparrows is well-earned. Thank you. But I certainly can't fault you for thinking I was reckless. Being inside the Dyrenell Empire was a terrible thing, and eventually I let my emotions take charge. I thought I would hold on to my pride as a White Sparrow, fight gallantly, and then die a noble death. I devoted myself almost completely to this plan. I simply could not permit myself to roll over and yield to evil. But Captain Leif prevented my noble sacrifice—and now that I look back, it is a very good thing he did so. My rash judgment nearly wiped out the White Sparrows. I'm ashamed of who I was back then. You're an honest, straightforward person, Patia; I understand how you found the situation with the Empire intolerable. Still, the fact my plans were discovered and laid bare for all to see is depressing. There's nothing to be done about that. Chelle is an expert in scheming, and spies an unavoidable reality of politics. Politics... Now there is a world I truly know nothing about. And yet, are there not many Sparrows who have ascended to statesmanship, or at least aspire to the political world? Certainly so. I simply want nothing whatsoever to do with such things. I wish only to be honest and just. That has been my singular desire for as long as I can remember. I know you have a strong sense of justice, but did not know it had burned inside you for so long. My parents taught me to always strive to do what is right. That was simply the kind of people they both used to be. Ah, forgive me. I did not mean to bring up memories of your parents' passing. Oh, they are both very much alive. It's merely that their spirits are broken. I come from a family of landed nobles. Despite this, we lived in peace with the smallfolk of our rural territory. At some point, my parents became aware of injustices being perpetrated by another noble—one whose rank in court was far higher than their own. They did not quail at the vast difference in their social rank, instead filing a complaint with the legislative assembly. This would turn out to be their undoing. When the noble learned of their actions, he procured false testimony that laid the blame for his own actions at the feet of my parents instead. And that injustice went unpunished? Yes. It was a shock. And it broke my parents' spirits, and I became—and remain—frustrated and resentful. But soon, something worse came to pass: The corrupt noble took over governance of the region in place of my parents. We held the people of the region dear to our hearts, but that man saw them as little more than chattel. He took their crops, their livestock— all that they had. He left them destitute and starving, and I hated him for it. So I set out to seek my revenge and stormed his manor. You took on a high-ranking nobleman all by your lonesome?! It sounds like the height of recklessness, yes? And looking back on it, I'm certain that is exactly what it was. As you can probably guess, I was driven forth from the manor. In truth, I barely escaped with my life. Fie, but it was vexing! I felt so keenly my own powerlessness, and like my parents, I began to give up on "doing right." However, a series of events at that time led me to Captain Leif, who worked tirelessly to see the matter resolved. After that, I knew I wanted nothing more than to follow his example, and so I joined the White Sparrow Corps. I promised I would never tolerate injustice again, and so became a knight in the sworn service of the people. So when you told those villagers before to find the justice in their hearts, this was actually borne of your past experiences. Yeah, I guess so. This world hasn't changed since then. But I'll never give up. And I will continue fighting until I finally change this world for the better.

Episode 4

A Hundred to One

*huff* Dawn has broken, and the time for battle has come. *gasp* Patia? What is it? Quiet! Patia? I think I heard the clanking of armor. ...Blast! Look there! Imperial soldiers! Roughly a hundred, unless I miss my guess. And they seem to be headed this way! They likely intend to flank the main force of our army on the plain. We cannot let them! Hurry, we must— Hey! There's someone there!  ! Of all the fool... They've spotted us! Grr, I didn't expect a lookout here... They're being quite cautious as they advance. Elisanne, you go on ahead. I can't leave you alone! You must. Run as fast as you can to the main force—I will distract the enemy here. There, in the thicket! It's New Alberians! If they inform the main force, our surprise attack will be ruined. Seize them! Fly, Elisanne! Fly! I'll be back for you. I swear it. And now, the rest is up to me. Here's a tip for later: If you want to launch a surprise attack, don't wear noisy armor! Blast! A White Sparrow! Not just any White Sparrow—I am Vice Captain Patia, and I will not allow you to take one step more! Aaaah ha ha! Are you mad, girlie?! There are over a hundred of us! Would you really try to take us all on alone? I have no fear of you. You are chaff in the wind, and I will mow you down like ripe wheat at the harvest! You three! Show this girl some manners! Sir, yes, sir! Just three? That's a mistake you'll regret. Haaah! Predictable! Gwaaaargh! Haaaah! A mere nuisance! She's so strong! I should have known better than to underestimate a White Sparrow. ...You five! Get her! Hraaaagh! Your numbers are meaningless. *pant* *pant* Yaaaaah! Hrgh! Now we've got her! Hraaargh! Huh?! Aaah! *pant* *pant* (Should have known a hundred versus one was going to get a bit dicey...) (But!) I promised myself...I'd never give up. You say something, girlie? I said I won't give up until people like you—those who prey upon the weak and defenseless—are purged from this land! I will fight to see that done! Your Majesty, each of our companies is in formation. I believe we are evenly matched when it comes to numbers. In that case, Leif, I want you to focus our strength in the center and— YOUR HIGHNESS! *pant* *pant* Your Highness, I bring urgent news! Elly?! What is it?! The enemy has a surprise attack force numbering a hundred approaching from the rear! Patia is attempting to hold them off by herself as we speak! She's WHAT?! Even someone of Patia's skill can't hope to hold off a hundred soldiers. Go to her, Leif. But Your Majesty— I have this battle well in hand. Right now, it's imperative that you save Patia and do something about that incoming ambush. Understood, Your Highness. Might I have leave to take a few soldiers with me? Of course. And good luck. Just a little farther, Leif. It was right around here... There she is! That's... *wheeze* I am not finished! C-Commander, this woman is absurd! We have to retreat! Don't be a fool! We'd be laughingstocks if people found out we let a single soldier drive us hence! Commander, look! New Alberian reinforcements? Damn! Well, at least now we can retreat and still save some face... Fall back! All men, fall baaaack! *pant* *wheeze* Patia! You're wounded! Elisanne... Do you remember when I said you were amazing, Patia? I am beginning to think that word may not do you true justice. Heh. This is a narrow space, and they were too prideful and stupid to rush me as one. Patia. Captain? You and I will discuss this further at a better time. But for now... Good work, soldier. Sir! Vice Captain Patia, reporting that I've successfully defeated the surprise attack force and...returned...safely...

Episode 5

Hopes for the Future

The battles in the Milon Plains were harsh, but in the end, New Alberia won the day. Thus was peace visited on the region at long last. I can't believe how much money goes into my pocket without those imperial taxes! Welcome! Perhaps some of our fine sylvan goods might catch your fancy? Every piece is guaranteed handmade! These people have barely had time to know freedom, yet look how lively they already are. His Majesty's first action was to institute an across-the-board slashing of tariffs. All of the merchants who had been unable to do business in this territory are now surging into the area. Look! It's the White Sparrows! They're the BEST! Patia! I'm from the village you saved! Oh! The one that was surrounded? Yes. I can't thank you enough for what you did. I'm alive and my business is booming, and it's all thanks to you! I am glad to hear it. Did you hear? Patia's in town! Wait, THE Patia? The Vice Captain of the White Sparrow Corps?! Whoa! It's really her! Er, thank you. Look, it's Patia! The noble knight who took down a million imperials with a single sweep of her mighty spear! Wait, what? I heard you swung your spear once and the power of the wind you whipped up blew all the imperials away! No person could do that! Show us! Show us how you cut through those imperials that surrounded the village and tore 'em all to pieces! I tore their FORMATION to pieces, not the people themselves! Patia! Patia! Patia! Patia! These people are turning my actions into some kind of mad epoch! That merely means you did excellent work. Patia! Yes? What is it? Hee hee! Um, I wanna... I wanna be a strong knight just like you someday! Wha...? 'Kay, that's it. Byeee! She wants to be like...me? *sigh* This is getting absurd... Patia? Don't look at me when I'm flustered! I would have thought you were used to young girls singing your praises by now. Well, I suppose they DO tend to hold me in a bit of esteem... They'd say things like, "I want to marry you when I grow up!" and such. But this is the first time I've ever heard someone say they want to BECOME me. It's all rather...embarrassing. Heh. If it makes you feel any better, I know what you are going through. In fact, the first time I heard someone say they wanted to be like me, it was YOU. Me?! Have you forgotten? Spare me the cheek! I remember. I simply never considered how it might have embarrassed you. When you said that to me, I chalked it up to a childish fantasy. That's why I was surprised to see you at the White Sparrows entrance exam. It seems you underestimated just how much business I meant. True enough. Yet at the same time, I felt an intense sense of responsibility. Responsibility? Why? I thought about your noble lineage, despite having lost your court status. And when I thought of how your parents wanted to raise a proper, formal woman— Enough! I know nothing of ladies or lineage or the like. I simply wish to be myself, no matter what blood may run in my veins. I threw those other things out long ago, Captain Leif—back when I first met you. Then it truly IS my responsibility. All right, ENOUGH! Sir! Ma'am! Message for you! What is it? The fort in the southwest of Rovetelle is under attack and requesting aid. I see. Thank you, that will be all. Shall I inform the Corps that we will be moving out at once? Please do, Patia. It seems we've more battles yet ahead of us this day. Yes, sir, Captain!
