Nursing a Dream

Er, well, she tends to lose her temper—hence her reputation as a warrior with whom one does not want to pick a fight. But the way of war was not always her chosen life's pursuit...

You want to become a NURSE?! Yes. It's long been a dream of mine. ...... Why are you all looking at me like that? Is it really such a strange request? N-not at all! It just comes as something of a surprise, is all. We certainly aren't thinking that nurse is a WILDLY inappropriate profession for one of your temperament. Er, maybe you should take a step back and tell us where this idea came from. I suppose I DID spring it on you out of the blue... Well, as you know, I currently follow the path of the warrior. But ever since I was young, I've always wanted to be a nurse. A kindly one who can see people through sickness and help with their injuries. There was a hospital in my hometown, so I'm quite familiar with nurses and the important work they do. I often saw them walking around in their spotless white coats—it seemed every child looked up to them. Sounds like quite the popular profession. But if that was your dream, how did you end up becoming a warrior? My village's vigilante militia apparently thought I had what it took. I couldn't bring myself to turn them down when they asked me to join, and before I knew it, I'd been with them for years. That's surprising. I figured you became a warrior by choice, not because others had to talk you into it. Still, it's easy to see why they pursued you. You possess a natural talent for combat. However, it is very Aeleen for you to have fought this whole time while also being rather opposed to the entire enterprise. Oh, I don't regret becoming a warrior. I've been able to protect a lot of important things as a result, which is great. Still, this castle has plenty of warriors. So I thought now would be a good time to try and achieve my true dream. Well, I think it's a fine idea. You have my full support. I, for one, would love some help dealing with the injured in our makeshift infirmary. You're very knowledgeable on medical herbs, so I know you'll be a fine asset. Thank you, everyone. I won't let you down! Truthfully, I've long thought that I'd be better suited to medical arts than combat! ...... Oh dear. You're looking at me again. N-no we're not! We're just, um... Hahaha... It will certainly put patients more at ease than if you did your rounds in armor. Still, as nursing is traditionally a human profession, I had to copy other uniforms while making it, so I'm glad you like it. Like I said, I won't let you down! I'm going to be a kindly nurse who supports everyone from the sidelines! We can't wait to see you in action.

...I'm afraid you've caught a cold. Then I'll just have to tough it out. Oh no you don't, bub! You need rest and recovery! Indeed, colds are not to be taken lightly. So today, I am going to act as your own personal nurse. But... This is my JOB, sir! Leave it to me! Well, if you say so... Now then, these three medicines are for your fever, so I need you to take them all. Er, it's a pretty low-grade fever. Won't one medicine be enough? I've made these from a variety of different herbs. Take them all, and your naughty fever will be a thing of the past! This still feels like too much... Obey your nurse! All right, all right! Down the hatch...

Hell, I can answer that one for ya! It all started 'round the time she first met ol' Euden. Silence yourself, sir! That long? This is worse than I thought. Come with me at once; I need you to tell me everything about your condition while I perform a thorough exam. I am NOT sick! Ah, that's what all sick people say. And yet, we never are as good at diagnosing ourselves as we think. Now come! I need you to tell me every last detail! I refuse! ...Argh! No! Stop yanking me! I'll get you for this, Ranzaaaaal!

...Wow, these fever dreams are intense. I swear I just heard Elly screaming. Then you better get back to sleep pronto, unless you want Aeleen coming back in here with another cold thermometer!

Okay, so I was taking a nap earlier and sorta fell off the desk. ...Don't laugh. Anyway, Aeleen comes running to see if I'm hurt, but when I tell her that I'm fine, she gets all huffy and leaves! Heh. I suppose it's normal to want to make use of a new skill. Anyway, do you want me to read you the rest of that faerie tale we started earlier? Do I ever! Crack that sucker open like an egg in a hammer store! I'm going to take that as a yes. Now where were we...? Ow! Oh man, paper cuts are the wors— ARE YOU INJURED?! EEEEEEEEEK! Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to scare you! I just heard someone cry out in pain and rushed in to see if I could help. Er, I just cut my finger on the edge of one of the pages here. It's even bleeding a little. Yesssss! It IS bleeding! You sound weirdly happy about that. What? Of course not! I would never be happy to see someone hurt! But now that I've finally met someone who's really injured, I'm so... *sniff* Give me your hand and let me heal you, Prince Euden. Er, all right. (Heh. A Bitter Pill

Whew! We're finally here... You can't let yourself be tired yet; our work has only begun! I can't believe you have so much energy. We've been fighting for days without end, yet you're spending all of your downtime tending to the sick and wounded. I just want to help people. Oh, I'd say you're doing that. In fact, I'd say you're working above and beyond what your average nurse would do by making your own medicine and such. Well, many small towns and villages don't have doctors or healing-magic users. And those are the people I want to help, even if it isn't technically within my job description. Now then, are you ready to get moving? I have to deliver this medicine, stat! Thank you, Aeleen! Dislocated Expectations

Did you hear about how Aeleen drove all those villains away with just a glare? Hear it? I SAW it! She had crazy eyes, so she did. I've never seen the like! I don't wanna take my medicine! If you don't, Aeleen will make you! EEEEK! I'll take it! I'll taaaake it! Yep. Sounds like Aeleen is REAL popular in that village. Not sure popular is the word I'd use. But it ain't like they hate her, exactly. I mean, there's worse things to be than the "nurse of nightmares" that ya don't wanna be pissin' off. I doubt she feels the same. *sniff* (Wait, was that Aeleen?) *sigh* I can't believe that's how people are talking about what happened. Though I probably shouldn't be surprised; it's normal to be shocked by what I did. I mean, I'm rather shocked myself. *sigh* I need to go to the village to do my usual rounds, but I just... Maybe I should take a day off. Do you have a moment, Aeleen? Yes, of course. What is it? Sorry for showing up unannounced. Are you busy? It's fine. How can I help? Well, when I was training with Ranzal yesterday, I fell and hit my arm. Goodness, that's a serious bruise! You should have shown me this earlier. It honestly didn't seem so bad yesterday, but when I woke up this morning, it was... Well, let's call it colorful. Anyway, do you think you can take a look at it? Of course! Thanks. ...All right, I'm finished. You really need to take better care of yourself, you know? Yeah, I know. I've always been bad about tending to myself ever since I was a kid. Zethia used to take care of me like you're doing now. She's your sister, right? Yes. She would follow me everywhere, insisting it was her job to heal me. I suppose everyone dreams of being able to help others when they're young. Maybe so. Speaking of which, was that what made you want to be a nurse to begin with? Well... My hometown is far to the north, in a region of heavy snow. We didn't have anyone who knew the first thing about healing magic. So when the roads were blocked by snow—which happened often—getting sick or injured often spelled death. Snow is always pretty from a distance, but it's easy to forget how hard it can be for the people who live with it. You're right about that. But one day, a nurse came from out of town. She built a small hospital for us that changed everything. She was kind, devoted, and always happy. Soon, illness was no longer the death sentence it used to be. I looked up to her, and dreamed of being like that one day myself. And that set you down this path? It's almost too straightforward a reason. Still, as much as I want to be like her, it seems that will never happen. Why not? Because at the slightest provocation, I turn into my other self—as with those bandits the other day. Our nurse was the embodiment of kindness, but I never will be. I think you're doing perfectly fine. Did you not see how horrified everyone was at my actions? They will never think of me as a kindly healing goddess now. A goddess, eh? Aeleen, did you look up to that nurse just because you wanted to be a "kindly healing goddess"? W-well... I don't think that's the case. I think it was because she helped lift the specter of death that hung over your village and its people. Now that you mention it... You might not be able to become exactly like that nurse—but that's because you're NOT her. People are all different. All this time, I've been so focused on becoming her that I lost sight of why I started feeling that way in the first place.
