Treasure Hunter Extraordinaire

Aw, ham hocks! We got so wrapped up in our fiend huntin', we didn't realize how deep into the labyrinth we were gettin'! Yeah, I don't like this. Let's hurry and find a way out. Agreed. But we still need to proceed with caution. Right. They say these sorts of ruins are teeming with traps. Oh please! Which of us is stupid enough to go wanderin' into a tra— Sweet corn casserole! A whole buncha arrows just shot outta the damn walls! Fine work answering your own question, Ranzal. Sorry! Sheesh. The arrows aren't stopping! We're going to have to make a run for... Wait, now the WALLS are closing in?! I don't wanna be a Ranzal sandwich! Somebody do somethin' already! Psst! This way! Who are you? Are introductions really more important than NOT being crushed?! No, but how did you get in here? I don't see a single entrance or egress! Abraca-dibby-doobra! Ah! A passage just opened in the wall! Inside. Come on! Whew! Looks like we're in the clear. I ain't never eatin' a sandwich again! Well, unless it's tasty. Or I'm hungry. Or if it's one'a those pickle and banana— So the walls were designed to open with the proper incantation? Fascinating. Thanks, friend. Ya really saved our hides back there. Heh. That remains to be seen. Before you take another step, look at the floor. Hmm. Some patches of soil appear to be a different color. Are ya kiddin' me?! MORE traps? I almost tromped right on that puppy! Yes, and there's plenty more where that came from. So stay close to me if you want to remain in one piece. Are you some kind of scholar? Nope! I'm the world's greatest treasure hunter. Name's Marty, by the way. Hey look. We're outside. Thanks to you, Marty. We really owe you one. It's like yer some kinda trap whisperer! How'd ya know exactly what to do every step'a the way? Wouldn't be much of a treasure hunter if I didn't have a knack for such things. Interesting. I don't suppose you'd consider joining us while we hunt fiends in the rui— Nope! Big nope. Sorry, friend, but I'm not a tour guide. My destiny is treasure, and treasure is my destiny. I have a duty to wow the world by bringing all of its secrets into the light! That's...ambitious. But also noble, in its way. Forgive me. I shouldn't have asked you to abandon that. No you should not have! So what say you make it up to me: Got any juicy leads on treasure that I can have? Hmmmmmmm? I've already cleaned this place out, see? Need a new line of investigation. You cleaned it out completely? Wow. I wish I had something to share, but... I have something. What about the old maps in the Halidom? Er, the Halidom has old maps? Our treasure vault is stuffed to the gills with dusty old maps and atlases. The Founder himself left them there, so they must be of some significance. Wait. You have maps that belonged to the Founder? Those are treasures even if they DON'T have big red X's on them! But if they DO have red X's... Hoo hoo! Lady, you know JUST how to tickle a man's treasure-lust. Right then! Lead the way to this "Halidom"! Wait, never mind—I already have a good idea where it is. Follow me! Well, that's alarming. Boy, this guy is a real laugh riot. We'll show ya the way, pal—just give us a minute so we can... Huh?! How'd he get so far ahead? Do you think we can trust him, Euden? We can trust his "treasure-lust," if nothing else. Hey! Are you coming, or am I keeping all those sweet, voluminous maps for myself? Hoo hoo hoooooo!

Collection Affection

Cleo! Cleoooooo! Hello, Marty. Did you enjoy rummaging around our treasure vault? Yes—but I've never seen so much treasure strewn around like common junk! Don't you ever CLEAN in there?! Ah. My apologies. I thought treasure vaults were supposed to have that strewn-about look. Augh! No! You need to treat your treasure with RESPECT! Treasures have feelings. Tell you what: why don't I take over custodial responsibilities in the vault? I'll clean everything up and get that treasure nice and sparkly again. ABSOLUTELY YES PLEASE DO THAT! Er, I mean...that would be lovely. I can't help but feel like this is my calling. Go with that, then? But in all seriousness, if there is anything we can do to help, please say the word. All right, you're on. First, we need to move all the treasure out of the vault. Let's hop to it, team! I want everything pristine! Less mold, more gold! Where ya want this humongous paintin'? Good heavens, I can't believe you managed to lift that. ...Ugh, so dusty! Let me just take care of that first. Right then! Now you can put it on the shelf we built earlier. Thanks! Marty? Where do you want this vase? That's not a vase, Elisanne—it's a censer. It was used to burn incense in a southern kingdom untold ages ago. Alas, the technique used in these engravings on the side has been lost. Isn't it just a marvel?! The real marvel is your knowledge. We had no idea what we were sitting on. Or that such beauty was lying beneath all the dirt and grime. Also, I see what you mean about treasure having feelings— everything just LOOKS happier now. Right? But our job isn't done yet. We need to make this vault the land's finest museum, and that takes hard work and careful planning. I'm not certain we need to go THAT far. Look, just let me have this. Please? I've been dreaming of a chance like this! What chance? Remember what I said about bringing the world's secrets into the light? The whole reason I became a treasure hunter is because I wanted to open a museum and be its curator. You guys have everything I need here: treasure unlike any the world's seen, and a space large enough to do it justice. Ah. Now I understand. A mere tomb raider doesn't need to know history, and a scholar doesn't need to know traps. But you had a reason to master both. That's right. A curator needs a little from column A and a little from column B. Well, if anyone can do it, it's you, Marty. You'll be the finest treasure-hunter-slash- curator in the land. Darn right, I will! But it's going to take some serious elbow grease. But once I'm done with your treasure, it's going to shine with the splendor of all the ages! Hoo hoo, yes!

Episode 3

Empty Inheritance

All right. Everything's strapped in. Time to go. Hmm? Marty, what's all this? Are you leaving the castle? Oh, uh... Well, yes. I suppose I am. But I'll be back! With that much luggage, I thought you might be off to raid a tomb or three. Where are you going? I want to put some of the treasures here on display in my museum. Wait, you already HAVE a museum? I thought that was what the vault was for. Of course I have a museum! What kind of treasure hunter doesn't have a museum?! ...Want to check it out? Is that all right? Of course! An empty museum is a tragedy! Bring your friends! Bring everyone! In that case, I'd love to see it. Let me gather everyone up. Ta-daaah! There she is! My museum! I must say, Marty, I don't usually think of treasure hunters as property holders. Heh heh. My father left it to me. He was also a curator. He must have been an incredible man. He was to me. And you want to follow in his footsteps? Not exactly. Why not? Don't get me wrong. I looked up to him. He was my hero in a lot of ways. He went out into the world, found its treasures, and brought happiness to all the museum patrons who got to see them. Then what is the problem? In the end, Dad sucked all the happiness right out of the museum halls. I don't follow. He died. Went out to hunt for more treasure and never came home. No one wanted to visit after that; I guess the exhibits made them too sad. Turns out they wanted to see my dad as much as the treasure itself. He shouldn't have died like that. He undermined everything he built. But I won't make the same mistake. No trap will ever get me because I'm the greatest treasure hunter there is! ...... Okay, stop with the moping already. Here, look at some treasure and cheer up! I guess that explains why he is so driven. I think he's going to do great things.

Episode 4

What Greatness Means

There you are, Euden! Hmm? What's all this luggage, Marty? I have something for you! Here, put out your hand. ...A key? To my museum! See, I'm about to head out on my most dangerous adventure yet. I'm the greatest treasure hunter alive, so there's really no cause for alarm. But in the highly improbable event something goes wrong... Well, I want to know my work is in good hands, and there's no one I trust more than you, Euden. Huh? Marty, wait! *sigh* He's gone. What is he thinking, running into danger like that all by himself?

*huff* *pant* Ugh... No wonder other adventurers steer clear of this place... The footing's unstable, the traps are savage, and it's crawling with fiends. I can't believe it, but it may be that the world's greatest treasure hunter has finally met his match... Nngh.... I c-can't move another step... This is it... Martyyy! And now I'm hearing things. Heh. Classic. Marty! Are you all right? Seeing things, too. I really AM done for! Snap out of it! Don't you recognize us? Wh-what are you all doing here? Savin' yer bacon, ya reckless dolt. Let me see those wounds. Oh yeah, that's much better. Thanks, Cleo! Now I can get back to— You will do no such thing, mister! That treatment put you on the mend, but you're in no condition to proceed. We're going back to the Halidom. But...treasure. Marty, listen to me. What does it mean to you to be "the greatest"? Do you think risking your life to brave impossible dangers makes you great? What? Well... No... No, it doesn't. To me, being the greatest means making certain you don't die. There's no point to any of this if I don't make it home to share what I find with all of the museum patrons. Exactly. And so long as you're breathing, you'll have more chances. You don't have to take chances alone, because that's what friends are for. What WE are for. Yeah, I suppose you have a point... Thanks, Euden. But I REALLY hate this! There's treasure around the next bend—I can smell it! Still, that's probably the exact same thing Dad said on the day he... I'm sorry, Marty. I won't make the same mistake. Let's go back to the Halidom so I can assemble a team. I think I know my limits now, so if that offer of help is still good, I'd love to take you up on it. Let's go find that treasure together. Now you're talking!

Episode 5

The Ultimate Treasure

Form up, team! Now raise your hand if you're ready for THE GREATEST treasure expedition of all time! Well, you certainly mended fast. Thanks to you, Cleo. I'm so glad you all agreed to come along! We'll try not to slow you down. You handle the traps and navigation, and we will deal with the fiends. Hoo boy, does this ever feel strange. I've never had treasure-hunting companions along for the ride before. Mostly because I don't want to have to divvy up the spoils at the end. No alliances, no apprentices, and no one along for the ride has always been my MO. Don't worry—ya ain't gonna regret havin' us in yer corner. I know I won't. Okay, off we go! Whooooooa. We've delved pretty deep into the ruins. Marty, look! No way... But wait, it HAS to be! It's this labyrinth's greatest treasure— the Crystal Doggo! It's...s-SO CUTE! This is going to be the prize exhibit in my museum. Then let's grab it and beat feet outta this joint already! Wait, Ranzal. That bridge between us and the Doggo is narrow and flimsy. It might collapse under our combined weight. We should only send as many people across as is absolutely necessary. A horde of fiends is closing in behind us! Well, that's a piece'a bad news. All their stomping about might cause the bridge to collapse! No! Not when we're so close! Go, Marty. Get the Crystal Doggo! The bridge should hold if it's just you. But I can't leave you here to— We'll hold the fiends off. Just go! A-all right! That's all well'n good, but now we gotta... Dammit! That last one got past me! No! The bridge collapsed! How will Marty get back? Don't worry, guys! I'll collect the Doggo and find another way out! Stay safe, okay?! All right! We'll see you back at the Halidom!

It's been three days... And no Marty. Do ya think he's...? ...... Hey now! Stop moping! That voice... Instead, why not feast your eyes on this treasure and try NOT to have your jaw hit the floor! Marty! You're alive! And that's... Ta-dah! The Crystal Doggo, as promised. Things got a little hairy there at the end, but I made it out all right. Sorry it took so long. I'm just glad you're safe. And this is wonderful! Your museum will finally have the treasure it deserves. You've done Alberia a great service. It's truly a momentous day. It is...but I can't keep the Doggo. I may have been the one to find it, but I couldn't have done it without your help. We don't want the Doggo, Marty. It's yours. I knew you would say that! But that still doesn't make it mine. It's OURS, end of story. All the same, I WOULD like to display it in my museum, so let's make a deal. You let me look after the Doggo, and in return, I'll make myself useful here. Are you sure? What happened to "no alliances, no one along for the ride"? Hey! I told you about that AFTER I agreed to team up, right? But here I am, offering to share my hard- earned treasure. If that's not character growth, I don't know what is. And more to the point, my old MO nearly got me killed more than once—and definitely would have done so this time. I'm not the "greatest" anything. Not yet. If I'm going to prove myself as a curator, I need to learn to trust people more. So how about it? Think there's a place for me here at the ol' Halidom? This is your home, if you want it to be. I can't think of a place I'd rather be. But in the meantime, point me at the next treas—Ah! Ow! My ribs! I think right now what you need to hunt for is some rest and relaxation. Hold still while I heal you. Ow, Cleo! What are you doing? You're gonna snap my bones in two. Ow ow oww! Now do the other arm. That will teach him to worry us sick. Heh. I think these silly moments together might be my greatest treasure.
