Episode 1

The Altean Prince

It's too bad we didn't find anything to help you get home today, either. I really thought we might find a solution in the Duris Ruins. Please don't worry about it. Your efforts are appreciated. Well, I still have a few of my friends looking somewhere else. Maybe they'll find something. In fact, why don't we go give them a hand? I never imagined people from another world would go to such lengths to aid us. I think it's natural to help those in need. I know if I was in your position—stranded in another world—I'd want to get back home as soon as possible. In fact, why don't you tell me more about your home? Would that aid your search in some way? Honestly, I thought talking about home for a bit might cheer you up. But now that I think about it, I suppose that will just make you miss it more. Sorry. It was probably a bad idea. Heh. You truly are a kind person, Prince Euden. Still, perhaps it WOULD be good to talk about Altea for a little while. I'd love to hear about it. My home is a beautiful kingdom full of water and greenery. The people are very kind—even to a royal like me. During the war, they gave me aid with no regard for themselves. I can tell how much you love your home just by how you talk about it. I care for it more than anything else— which is why I have sworn to return. I will never stop trying to go home, no matter how long it may take. And we'll never stop trying to help you achieve that goal. Thank you, Prince Euden. Right, then! Let's go join the other— Eeeeeeeek! What was that?! It came from over there. Let's go! Eeek! S-stay back! Grrrrrr! Haaah! There's more fiends over there, Prince Euden! I'm on it. Yaaah! Prince Marth! We strike as one! You're finished! Graaaah... Blimey! You saved me! I'm just glad we made it in time. Are you hurt? Do you need aid? Yo, Euden! Marth! We heard fiends and came runnin' to... Oh. You, uh, already killed 'em. Did the two of you truly dispatch all of these fiends on your own? Couple'a knights in shiny armor they were! Oh, I could just kiss you both! Keep your lips to yourself, madam! We knew this woman was in trouble, so we rushed into the fight. Indeed, there was no time to hesitate. Your desire to save this woman gave you the strength you needed. It seems neither one of you can stand idly by when someone is in need. I guess they ARE kinda similar in that respect, huh? Yep! We got two peas in a pod here! Or, uh, two princes in a...whatever you store princes in. In addition to helping others, both princes are also generous with their friends. And both of 'em charge into danger without thinkin' twice! Such flattery is unwarranted. Your prince may be the model of gallant royalty, but I am certainly not. I disagree—you're far more composed and level-headed than I am. Heh. Bwaaaa ha ha! Er, did I say something funny? I certainly did not pick up on it if so. Ah ha ha! Look! They did it again! I have a feeling the two of you are going to become very close friends.

Episode 2

The Hero-King

Hah! Hah! Haaaah! You train with a fierce dedication, Prince Euden. Hello, Prince Marth. Is such training so you might better stand against the Empire? That's right—and I won't stop until I'm strong enough to take back everything that matters to me. A bold viewpoint which I applaud. Might you be willing to tell me more of your relationship with the Empire? I don't want to drag you into our problems. A stance your foes clearly do not share, seeing as how they appointed someone from another world as a commander. It seems they will stop at no lengths to see you defeated, and I cannot help but wonder why. Although perhaps this is not an issue for an outsider like myself. No, it's fine. ...And truth be told, you might even be more connected to all of this than I first assumed. So let me fill you in...

...So your home was destroyed and your family stolen from you? Yes—and so I fight to reclaim it all. One day, my sister will be free and my kingdom will know peace once more. ...... What is it? I fear your story hits closer to home than I had anticipated. For you see, I went through something very similar. In what way? I lost my kingdom, and only survived thanks to my elder sister. Oh wow. I spent a long time fighting to reclaim my country... Just as you are doing now. I see. Coincidences are funny things, are they not? I never thought I would stumble upon someone so similar to myself. Neither did I. If you don't mind me asking, what became of your country? We fought a fearsome war, but eventually my kingdom knew peace once more. Oh, that's wonderful! ...Heh. I'm not sure why I was so relieved to hear that just now. Perhaps it serves as further proof of your inherent goodness. You're about the same age as me, and yet I feel like you've already lived twice the life that I have. I can see why people started calling you the Hero-King. How do you know that name?! Prince Alfonse said people call you that. Er, was he wrong? No, but I feel even greater shame hearing it spoken by you. That name implies I ended the war alone, and yet it would still rage on today without the aid of all my friends. Ah! What is it? I just realized something. Perhaps I was guided to this world in order to help someone in the same way my friends helped me. ...Someone like a prince in a very similar predicament to my old self, for example. Wait. You mean ME? It would certainly explain a great many of the coincidences. Ordinarily, my being in a different world like this would be impossible. And yet, the impossible has happened. There must be a reason! That's actually a pretty convincing argument. I cannot state for certain that my purpose here is to aid in your quest. But I promise you this: For so long as I AM here, I will do all I can to help you. Thank you, Prince Marth. That means a great deal. If I can provide even the smallest aid, you have but to let me know. I swear to fight with a strength that brings glory to Altea!

Episode 3

Dragon Relations

Is there no end to these fiends?! If this battle drags on much longer, I fear exhaustion will win the day. We must end it quickly! Leave it to me! Dragon! Grant me your power! Raaaaagh!

...Whew! Is that all of them? I... Erm... Uh oh. Is there something on my face? My apologies. I did not mean to stare. I simply cannot help but be fascinated every time I see you shapeshift. It reminds me of the Manaketes—a race of dragon-people from my world who possess a similar power. So your world also has dragons? Indeed it does. They have the ability to seal away their draconic power and assume human form. It is much like your shapeshifting, except in reverse. I think we just found another unexpected similarity. Might you tell me a little more about shapeshifting? It looks to me like a power which allows humans to become dragons, no? It's a bit more complicated than that. Shapeshifting is a power born from the trust between a human and a dragon. It's an ability passed down through the dragonblood of the Alberian royal family. With it, we can form pacts with dragons and receive their assistance. Fascinating... So humans and dragons live in harmony here in Alberia? Er, for the most part, yes. Is that not the case in your world? No. My sworn enemy was a Manakete. He was the emperor of a dragon tribe that tried to rule over humanity. Not all Manaketes are my enemies, of course—some even lent me their strength. But I fear a great many stood against me as well. I see. So you understand why I find the concept of humans and dragons coexisting to be a bit... Well, strange. It also makes me question some of my past actions. I fought dragons to return peace to the kingdom, but now I wonder if there was perhaps another path. I'm sure you were only doing what you thought was right. If something similar was to happen in Alberia, I would fight whoever I had to in order to save it. People who live in shackles will never know happiness. I could not agree more. Dragons may be revered in my world, but that doesn't mean there will never be an evil one. So I will fight them if I have to, and I will right whatever wrongs they may end up committing. That is the duty of all who carry the dragon bloodline. Your words have the ring of truth. If anyone deserves the title of Hero-King, it is clearly you. Oh, believe me, I have more than my own share of problems. My friends are always telling me I'm too soft, for one. Ha ha! A flaw I share. I was always being told that one needs more than ideals and pleasantries to win a fight. I once got in a great deal of trouble for acting as a decoy because I didn't want to force that burden on a friend. And I'm always being told that I fight far too close to the front lines for a prince and commander. Still, if something can be done to reduce the number of casualties in battle, why would you not do it? And not just friends—I have no desire to see blood spilled on either side. I'm actually sort of relieved to hear someone else say that. It backs up my own feelings. Kindness is a strength to be celebrated. Say, do you have any more stories about you and your friends that you'd be willing to share? Countless—so I hope you know what you are getting into by asking. Sit down, Prince. Take your ease. This should only take...oh, three or four months at the most. Ha! I can't wait.

Episode 4

Pushing Past Hate

You have a couple of letters, Marth. Strange. How would anyone even know to send me a letter in this world? Perhaps they're thank-yous. You've helped a great deal of people since you came here, after all. I just did what I could. It wasn't anything special. I think the people you've helped would beg to differ. Regardless, I'll let you read in peace. Hmm, she's right. It's a thank-you from the woman we saved from fiends recently. She didn't need to go out of her way to write this. ...Blast. Now I feel like I am the one who should be thanking HER. I imagine the other letter is simila... Ah!

Hey, where'd Marth get to? Now that you mention it, I've not seen him for some time. I hope nothing happened to him.

You are the ones who called for me? We greatly appreciate your coming, Your Highness. The letter bore a signature that read, "Harle the Black Raven." Are you he? Harle is presently attending to another matter, but he sent me to collect you. Is it reasonable for me to assume that you came here because you are interested in cooperating with us? You refer to aiding your dragon hunt, yes? First, I must know why you made this offer in the first place. We heard you once defeated an evil dragon in a great battle. We would make use of that strength. I have no desire to assist an empire that brings its people naught but misery. Take your search elsewhere. Ah, but are you not the Hero-King? I fail to see the connection. The Dyrenell Empire seeks to put an end to dragons' rule of the world. Humans should make their own destiny. I believe you would agree, yes? ...... It is not the Empire who oppresses humanity, but dragons—and dragons are your mortal foes, are they not? Surely you were called here to take up this mantle and eliminate the scourge of dragonkind from the world! All you have heard of me is correct. It is true that I defeated a dragon emperor in order to secure the peace of my people. And we would have you reenact that selfsame legend here in our world! Join us, Prince Marth! Join us in defeating the traitorous prince who plots to create a world ruled by the power of drag— But! If you declare a being evil simply because it is a dragon, then you are no different from the evil I once defeated. I choose my blade's targets by the contents of their hearts! Then you... I came here to learn for myself what you imperials would call justice. I see now that our paths will never be the same, and so I shall continue walking at Prince Euden's side. A shame. ...And also a shame that I must now enact the second order given to me by Captain Harle. For if you refused our offer, we were told to eliminate you. I suspected as much, though I hoped most fervently it would not come to this. Extra rations for the man who brings me the head of this coward! Yaaaaaaah! I cannot allow myself to fall here... For I must return to Altea! Haaaaaah!

Gaaaah... Impressive—and yet you remain vastly outnumbered. At some point, Prince, you WILL fall. Oh, he's not outnumbered. I know that voice! Are you all right, Marth?! Prince Euden! What are you doing here?! I found a torn-up letter in your room and took the liberty of reassembling it. Why the heck didn't you tell us you were headin' out here, man? We're FRIENDS! Maybe that's how ya do stuff where you come from, but it ain't the way here! My apologies to you all. Change of plan, men! The stranger no longer matters—bring me the head of that traitorous prince! To arms, everyone! Right!

Heck yeah! We drove 'em off! Thank you all for coming to my aid. We should be thanking you, Marth. I was happy that you rejected the Empire's offer. But are you sure that was the decision you wanted to make in your heart? ...My mother was killed by a dragon. They stole both my country and my family, and long have I hated them for such. But killing and hate bring only more of the same. I may not know exactly why I was brought to this world, but I DO know it was not simply to vent my own resentments. Well said. Besides, in this conflict, it is clear to me which side truly desires peace. Thus, I choose to put my faith in your ideals...and your blade. I won't let your trust be misplaced.

Episode 5

The Meaning of Fate

I have finished tending the fields, Cleo. Thank you, Marth. It was enough for you to stay here in the castle with me—I didn't expect you to help with chores as well. And yet, watching the castle and caring for the fields are both important tasks. The last thing we want is for our stronghold to be overrun by the enemy. How very right. Incidentally, I heard that you are quite familiar with the history of this country. I suppose you could say that, yes. Might you teach me? I hope to learn more about the history of Alberia, and specifically how humans and dragons came to live side-by-side. I'd be happy to tell you what I know. While they may live in harmony now, humans and dragons were once the greatest of enemies. History tells us the battle between them was a fearsome one indeed. ...... But one day, a great calamity appeared in this world, and the races joined forces in order to beat it back and restore peace across the land. That is how the current relationship came about. I see. Might I ask where your interest in this matter comes from? I have just been thinking about somethi— Cleo! Are you there?! What's wrong, Elisanne? You look flustered. It's Euden. He's hurt. Urrrgh... What happened to you?! We were saving a child who had been captured by fiends... N-no, it's okay. I'm fiiii... Aaargh! Another act of recklessness, I assume. You can tell me all about it after I heal you. Allow me to assist you, Cleo! How are you feeling today, Prince Euden? I'm fine, thanks. I honestly feel ready to get back to work, but Cleo said that if I didn't take at least three days off, she'd poison my lunch. I don't THINK she's serious, but... Heh. Her healing magic truly is amazing. Oh, it is—and I've taken advantage of it more times than I can count. I feel terrible for all the worry I cause. It is a difficult thing indeed to help both yourself and others. But the thought of letting even a single person die is often too much to bear. I completely understand what you mean. I don't want anyone to be hurt if there's any way to avoid it. And yet, I think you are forgetting an important piece of the puzzle. No matter how gallant the action, its meaning is lost if you do not live on afterward. You must survive in order to enact the will of your friends—and your kingdom. This is the duty of one charged with saving an entire country. ...... That is not an original thought, I fear. It is something I was told by a friend when I first learned my sister had entrusted me with my country's future. That was the moment I realized my life does not belong to me alone. That definitely sounds like something I should think about. I need to become even stronger than I am so I can protect both the people I care about and my own skin. Looking at you feels like looking at my past self. At first, I wasn't certain we were truly as similar as your friends were suggesting, but now I see it is indeed the case. It's hard to believe we come from such different worlds. It feels like we've known each other for our entire lives. Agreed. But now that I am here, there's something I wish to see with my own two eyes. What's that? I want to witness the kind of peace that can be created through the bonds of human and dragon. The war in my world may be over, but dragons live on. After coming here, I feel I have a duty to realize the peace your world has found in my own. That's a noble goal. I think that is the real reason I was brought to this world—and why I came to meet you. To assist you on your own path to peace. I know that to be true now. In that case, I should be even more grateful for our meeting. Knowing you ended the conflict in your world makes me even more determined to end the conflict in my own. I'm going to show you that I can realize the same peace here. Your strength and altruism will see you to this end. I am certain of it.
