Fists of Rage
Over the eastern sea and then further still, there exists a bamboo thicket. In this thicket lived a pand—er, a DRAGON—named Long Long.
He possessed the kindest of spirits, but also great strength, and was adored by all the other creatures who called his thicket home.
So long as Long Long remained in the thicket, the animals felt they could live there in peace—no matter what fiends or troublesome dragons might suddenly appear.
...But they were wrong.
Despite his great size, Long Long had not engaged in a single battle. His gentle nature simply could not bear the thought of fighting.
But everyone mistook his hesitance for humbleness, and treacherous beasts so dreaded his hulking form that they turned tail and fled at the mere sight of it.
Long Long did not mind his unearned reputation, but he lived in fear of one day having to defend the thicket from a truly dangerous foe.
One day, a lone member of the Qilin tribe appeared before him and demanded that the dragon learn martial arts as he had done.
The thought of training to fight so horrified Long Long that he dismissed the possibility at once.
The Qilin did not force the issue, but he left Long Long with these words: "If you refuse to change your ways, someone will come to grave harm."
Long Long knew those words to be true, for if an enemy ever arrived at the thicket, he would likely be unable to defend his friends.
The warning stuck in Long Long's heart like a sharp, bitter thorn. Until one day...
Despite others believing Long Long was strong, a Qilin martial artist said, "If you refuse to change your ways, someone will come to grave harm."
Rumors of Long Long's strength spread far and wide, which caused fiends and other terrors to steer far clear of his thicket home.
However, Long Long's worries only grew, for he could not bear to face his friends and tell them how weak he truly was.
He knew this could not continue, but try as he might, he could not muster up his courage. This caused him to lament his fate into the howling wind of the thicket.
"My strength is a lie," he moaned. "I've never fought even once. But if someone were to learn this, my home could be in danger. Oh, what am I to do...?"
He had intended for his woes to disappear into the thicket, but there was one who overheard his words.
The eavesdropper was a proud, cruel dragon who immediately began scheming a way to seize the thicket away from poor Long Long.
The violent dragon soon challenged Long Long to battle, hoping to defeat him in front of everyone and thus expose his weakness to all.
Long Long knew he could never win against such a foe, but neither could he run away. And so, he gathered his resolve and headed for the place where the challenge was to occur.
With his son Mao Mao and all his friends looking on, the bout began. Long Long was quickly overwhelmed by the relentless onslaught of his fierce opponent.
Knowing Long Long's secret, the dragon strutted and preened— ignoring the fact that Long Long was attempting to yield and end the battle.
"Are you trying to give up, you stupid panda?!" cried the dragon. "If you do that, I'll just give a thrashing to your son instead!"
Suddenly, Long Long flew into a rage. "I won't let you lay one claw on Mao Mao...and I AM NOT A PANDA!"
In the next instant, the dragon's body went flying to the edge of the thicket; Long Long had given in to his rage and delivered a devastating punch that blew his foe away.
Long Long was stunned by his own strength, but that surprise was his alone—for the other creatures of the thicket understood him better than he did himself.
The creatures knew that whenever Long Long gave in to his emotions, he manifested unthinkable strength. It was only the dragon himself who did not understand this.
The Qilin martial artist went to Long Long and said with a sigh, "This is why I told you someone was going to be hurt."
For the Qilin knew that such great strength had no business being so closely tied to emotion. It must be controlled, lest it cause great damage in the name of rage.
From that day on, Long Long trained with the Qilin. Thus was born a dragon with mastery of the rare martial artistry of that tribe.
At his master's suggestion, Long Long set out on a journey of training. It's been some time since then, but even now, there is a legend handed down in the eastern lands:
"If you should come across a black and white dragon, you must not anger it. ...And whatever happens, do NOT call him a panda!"
