In Search of Ugliness

AAARGH! ...... Stop, please! I have a family! Aaaaargh! ...The moon is pretty. And yet my lonely rain...never ends. In a lawless area ruled by a band of brigands,
the prince and his friends have taken on a request
from the town to quell the larcenous looters.
Sweet blue hell! Looks like the end'a the line for us... We got ya cornered, ya dogs! Yer days of lootin' and pillagin' are over! If you hope for mercy from us, you will agree to return all you have stolen. Eyagh! Please, spare my life! ...Haw haw! Just joshin'. Huh? Looks like YER the idiot blokes what got cornered! Look out, boss! It's a trap! Time to take out the trash, boys... and make it HURT! Hrk! Gwaaaargh! Next. AAAAARGH! One to go. W-wait! Just hear me out here, yeah? I gots me a sick mum, so I does! Only turned cutpurse what so I could pay the sawbones to look after her! If I die here, she'll die too! So just lemme go, yeah? I promise to be good after this—I PINKY promise! ...... Hold it! I don't know who you are, but I'll not stand by and permit you to kill a man who seeks to surrender. Ya fell for it! Hrk! *snort* My stories are so good, I ought go write me a novel. Later, suckers! Blast! The brigand is gone! ...Ugly. Oh, I agree: There is naught uglier in life than spinning cowardly deceit in order to make good one's escape. All of you are ugly, too. I'm sorry? Maybe she's right—lettin' a chump like that get away ain't exactly our finest hour. Still, not sure ya really need to be goin' around callin' folks ugly. Your ugliness is why I need to come with you. I am very confused right now. Also, who even ARE you? Linnea—and you are the seventh scion. You know me? I've been looking for you. Take me with you. Er, and WHY do you want to come with us, exactly? I'm searching for humanity's ugliness. You're fighting a war, right? The rigors of the battlefield... Kill or be killed... It is where people show their true selves. That's why I'm coming with you: I want to fight with you. I want to see your ugly side. Ya ask me, boss, this whole plan is ten pounds'a bullplop in a five-pound sack. I know ya love invitin' weirdos to hang out with us, but I don't see you and her ever comin' to a meetin'a the minds. No, you're right. But I can't help worrying for her... I don't need your worry. Well, Your Highness? What shall we do? ...We'll bring her along. Who knows what might happen if we just leave her here. ...... Ya sure, boss? I mean, this lady ain't just an oddball—she's the ODDEST ball. What could cause a woman to undertake something so twisted as a search for the ultimate ugliness within humanity? It's a good question, but I feel confident she'll tell us the answer in time. I mean, there must be SOME reason she's like this...

Not Your Typical Sylvan

...Hey. Hello, Linnea. What's up? Why aren't we fighting? Conflict isn't something we seek out around here—we only fight when there's no other option. But I need it. Without conflict, there was no point in coming to this castle. Say, Euden, at the risk of painting with a really wide brush here, Linnea doesn't exactly strike me as your typical sylvan. Really? Well, many of the sylvans in this castle are on the unusual side. Perhaps you've become desensitized to their oddness, Euden. Ha ha! Are you one'a the weirdos, Cleo?! Well, I suppose I'm not what one would refer to as a "typical" sylvan... Aw, I'm just kiddin'. Anyway, so here's what I mean: Most sylvans just sorta hang out in the woods and commune with nature, ya know? I mean, we throw down when we have to, but it's usually just brawlin' with an old grumpy bear or something—our race general ain't what you'd call bloodthirsty. But Linnea is all ABOUT fighting. Another oddity is that her clothing is definitely not of sylvan make. The design would be considered elaborate by sylvan standards, and the thread and weave is also quite unusual. Mysteries pile upon mysteries when it comes to this child. Whatever could her true story be? ...I don't care if I act like a normal sylvan or not. Well, that's your choice, and we're certainly fine with it. I may have sylvan blood, but I don't know what it's like to BE one. And why is that, exactly? ...I was raised by humans. What?! My adoptive parents claim someone left me in front of their house. I've never been to a sylvan village... I don't even know what my real parents look like. Oh man, that sounds rough. Not really. My dad taught me how to fight and we always had food to eat. It was...pretty nice. Then why are you so eager to learn about the ugly side of humanity? Do you hate humans or something? No! I mean...I can't hate them. And that's why I... Ugh. Never mind. Okay, what was THAT about? Saying that you "can't" hate humans is a very specific choice of term. So...what? You think she WANTS to? Why else would she seek out conflict? Human ugliness is laid bare on the battlefield like no other place. None of this is making any sense. But one thing is certain: Linnea is in a vulnerable state, and we should look out for her.

What Makes Life Precious

Ah, what lovely weather. Let's get this laundry dried before it starts to wrinkle. Why do I have to do this? Because everyone who lives here takes a turn helping with household chores. ...... I've never seen someone stare at laundry with such vitriol. Is it truly so terrible to be asked to do your fair share? It's not that. I was just...remembering how my mom and I used to do laundry. I mean, not this much, obviously... It was just me and my parents. But then three became two, and two became one... And I've been alone ever since... So why do I suddenly have to take care of so much laundry? Because you're one of us now. You're not alone any longer. That's what I'm scared of. Wait. You're scared of NOT being alone? Yes—especially if it means I have to hang around humans. Aren't YOU scared of them? They live such different lives... and pass from them so fast. The two of us will outlive every human in this castle. No matter how many happy days we spend together, it's going to end in tragedy. How can you not be afraid of that? Heh. It's not funny. I'm sorry. It just sort of slipped out. I've been alive for many, MANY years longer than you, Linnea. And while some of them were filled with fine companions, I also spent many of them alone. I've met people I never wanted to lose... and lost them all the same. Even now, I miss them so terribly it feels as if my heart will break. So why did you laugh? Because that's just how life works— and no amount of thinking, praying, or weeping can change it. You might as well try to empty the ocean with a spoon. But the relationships and bonds we form are what make life worth living. So rather than hanging my head over what is to come, I strive to enjoy the happiness I feel in the present. And if you ask me, the finite nature of life is what makes it all the more precious. ...... It's all right if people have different ways of thinking—including you and me. That's only natural. Anyway, I think I've said enough. We have some laundry to dry! The sky... I haven't looked at the sky in so long... but my rain still falls. *sigh* What is it now? I was just thinking about how bright the sky is... And also...you.

Hey there, Linnea! Doing a little weapon maintenance today? ...Yes. I saw you sharpening this selfsame blade yesterday as well. Admirably prudent. Dad always said that regular maintenance was important. It's great that you took his instructions to heart like that. ...Why? Er, why what? Why are you so NICE?! Whoa! Where's this coming from? It's not COMING from anywhere! It's always BEEN like this! You people are all so...so NICE, and it makes it impossible for me to hate you! All I want is to hate humans... See, that doesn't make sense to me. Weren't you raised by humans? Do you actually want to hate your parents? My mom and dad are the ones I want to hate most. I just...I love them so much... and I wish I could hate them instead. Because the rain never stops. The rain?

Dad died first, then Mom a few years later. They both went peacefully... And on both of those days, it was raining... Downpours heavy enough to drown out even the sound of my tears. I've known nothing but sadness ever since they left me. The sadness... The rain... My loneliness... None of it ever ends. They got old, and I was left behind. Ah...right, because you're sylvan... I can see how painful these memories are for you, but let me say one thing... ...? You can't hate your parents. That's not your decision. I didn't say not to—I said you CAN'T. Even if we showed you the ugliest side of the worst human in the world, you still wouldn't be able to do it. But that's all I have. It's all I've been striving for. I'm sad and alone and I want to forget, so why can't I hate them?! Because no amount of bad behavior on the part of random humans can make you forget all the wonderful things you love about your own parents. Your parents loved you—a REAL kind of love—and that isn't something you can just forget about or wish away. And I think you know that. It doesn't matter that you're sylvan and they're human—you had a bond. ...... So what...should I do? It's all right to remember them, Linnea, and it's all right for that to hurt. You can still live a happy life and remember the people you've lost. I don't... I don't understand that. And if I DID come to understand it... No! Remembering is sad! It's lonely! I don't WANT to be alone! Waaaaaaah! Oh, poor Linnea. I know it's difficult, and I know you did your best. But you are no longer alone. Both of you are so...warm... Mom... Dad... (Euden is with me... Clear Skies

The weather's beautiful, huh? It sure is! Lookit that sweet, sweet sunshine! ...Hey. Linnea! What's up? Why aren't we fighting? 'Cause it's better NOT to be fighting! Are you seriously still on about this? No. What? I mean...I want to help. You do? I don't have a lot of skills. But Dad taught me how to fight, so if that's what you need...I'll do it. I want to fight with all of you. Linnea, that's... For so long, I wanted to hate humans. Because being all alone and remembering my parents' love... It hurt. But the more I came to know about humans, the harder it was to just forget. I know some people have ugly hearts. But there are also hearts filled with warmth and kindness. That's the way of it for humans and sylvans and...everyone. I can't hate humans. I'll never be able to. But it really does hurt to lose things. It makes me feel lonely. That's why I want to fight for you— so there's no more loss. I mean, that's great to hear, but you understand what it really means, right? The prince and most of the folks around here are human, and that won't change. So short lifespans, disease, all that stupid stuff—it's always gonna be there. Easy, Notte. Look, someone needs to give this girl some straight talk, so it might as well be ol' Notte the straight-talk queen! You're gonna hurt again, Linnea. You just ARE. So? Whatcha say to that? ...You're right. I will experience loss again. I might even want to hate humans again someday. We won't let you feel that way. Huh? Even if you have to say goodbye to us some day, you won't need to hate. Because we'll leave you with so many good feelings and memories that you'll be able to live with a smile in your heart. And that's why I'd like you to be with us for as long as we can make it happen. So what do you say? ...Yes.
