Dragon Story Episodes
The Fledgling Circus

Once upon a time, a fledgling

dragon befriended a young boy.

The two loved fun above all else,

and each morning, they greeted

each other in the exact same way:

"Ready for some tomfoolery?"

They played tag, they played hide-

and-seek, they wrought mischief on

adults unlike any prank history had

seen. There was seemingly no end

to their creativity.

One day, a bright and colorful tent

was erected in the boy's village.

It was their first encounter ever

with a circus.

Clearly this was tomfoolery on a

whole new level!

They couldn't get enough of the

spectacle. There was the flying

trapeze, the knife throwing, and

even the fearsome beast tamers.

Oh, and let us not forget the

clownfoolery (as they soon took

to calling it.) Yes, the boy and

his dragon were instantly in love.

"The big top is tops!" cried the boy.

"We should join up!" said the dragon.

And thus was a small—but special—

dragon-taming duo born.

The two started by regaling the

village with feats they had devised.

Though it wasn't fancy, both boy and

dragon knew they had a bona fide

circus show on their hands.

Tomfoolery was had in spades...

but like all shows, theirs eventually

had to come to an end.

It was a simple, inexorable fact,

but they were too young to know

or expect it...

Enamored with the big top, the

boy-and-dragon duo had taken to

regaling the village with their own

unique circus show.

Spring sprung, summer sweltered,

fall fell, and then came the chill of

winter—but they continued their act

tirelessly no matter the season.

So when the first rejection came,

it was like the snap of someone's

fingers ruining a perfect daydream.

"Ready for some tomfoolery?" asked

the dragon one glorious day.

"I can't," replied the boy. "I have to

help around the house."

"Ready for some tomfoolery?"

"I can't. I have to watch my

children."

"Ready for some tomfoolery?"

"I can't. I just...can't. These old bones

can't handle such antics anymore."

All boys must grow up. All dragons

too, of course, but the boy aged

more quickly—from the dragon's

perspective, cruelly so.

What had happened to his spry

partner in crime? He became too big,

too busy, and too broken to perform.

And then, just like that...he was gone.

The dragon tried to forget his

sadness by forgetting his greatest

source of joy—the circus.

But such things are not so easily

forgotten.

"I'm ready for some tomfoolery,"

he thought.

His heart begged for those days to

return, for just one more chance to

bring a smile to someone's face.

But the seasons crept by,

each more monotonous

and lonely than the last.

The dragon was ready to give up,

for he felt he would never have a

fun day again. But then...

"Why so glum, little drake?" said a

small voice. "Come with me!

We'll go see the circus!"

It had been untold years since the

dragon had heard that word. But he

went to see, and lo and behold, there

it was: the bright and colorful tent

that had once made his heart sing.

His eyes sparkled as he let out a

roar of joy.

Some time later, a spectacular circus

troupe became the talk of a certain

harbor town. And the stars were

a young girl...and her dragon.

On this very day, they'll be regaling

the town with tomfoolery on an

unprecedented scale.

Don't believe it? Then step right

through the pleats of that big tent

over there and see for yourself.

You can't miss it.

Hurry, now. They'll be raising the

curtain any moment...
