Episode 1

The Wandering Swordsman

What say you to resting for a while in this town, Your Highness? That's a good idea; everyone's dead on their feet from fighting so many fiends. Let's stay here for a while before we head back to the castl— Are you guys travelers? Get out of here before you get dragged into any trouble! The hell? What's goin' on? There's a foreign swordsman and a large pack of thugs in that street over there, and they're not discussing the weather! A foreign swordsman? Don't be makin' us out to be the bad guys here, friend. This town's my territory, and folks what don't pay their dues get a little lesson. Forcibly taking money from the innocent at the point of a sword is the very definition of a "bad guy." I will not stand by and allow such things. Leave this town at once. Looks like we got one more lesson to deal out. Let him have it, boys! With pleasure, boss! Oy! Where'd he go?! He jumped above you, idiot! Here I am. Gaaaah! How'd he jump twice the height of his own body?! Who cares HOW high he can jump?! I'm gonna kill this fool! Caught the blow, didja?! Guess I'll have to cut right through that sword'a yours! Hah! Then I shall pour my chi into my sword in order to repel you. Haaah! Aaaaargh! Cor, he sent him flyin'! This ain't no time for bein' impressed! Take him out already! You don't know when to give up. And yet, I fear even my chi has limits. Hmm... What to do...? Let us help! Is that you, Euden? Well, if it ain't Ku Hai! So you are the foreign swordsman that villager was talking about. We've heard all about what's going on, and we want to help however we can. I appreciate your aid. Let us fight! Uh oh. Time for this bird to fly! He ran into the alley! Bwa ha ha! The alleys in this town are like a maze; you ain't never gonna catch the boss-man now! Dunno why yer boastin' about a boss what just left ya high'n dry. Still, what should we do? Leave this to me. Haaah! *pant* *pant* I gotta be safe now... Evil is never safe. What?! How'd ya catch up to me? Where'd ya even come from?! I ran along the rooftops. No maze is challenging when one can view it from above. Now it is time to teach you a lesson for all the ill deeds you have committed. Prepare yourself, coward! Eeeeeek! Oh, thank you so much! Those guys have really been making our lives miserable. Let's have a celebration in honor of our new town heroes! Thank you, but I would prefer not to. I find such attention...uncomfortable. To hell with that! No one's gonna have any fun if the star of the show ain't there. Hmm... I suppose that would not do. Very well—I shall do what I can to enjoy the occasion. By the way, what brought you to this town to begin with? I happened by during my wanderings. Huh? But as soon as you arrived, you asked where the thugs were! ...... I'm guessing ya heard a rumor and came to help, yeah? Why not just say so? Regardless of your reasons, that was a truly impressive leap. And I love the way ya tossed them punks around like ragdolls! You must have one fine set'a muscles, my man. I did not use muscles in my techniques. I used chi kung to give myself bursts of strength, and to increase the potency of my sword. Chi kung? What's that? It is a technique in which one refines the chi—or mana—in their body. Chi kung is often used in martial arts; there are a number of dojos in Peng Lai that teach its usage. I was taught both chi kung and the art of the sword at the dojo I attended. So training at a dojo is what made you so strong? Your master must be quite proud to have trained such a capable student. I...certainly hope so. By the way, you wouldn't consider coming to our castle, would you? Your castle? You're a capable fighter with a strong sense of justice. You could be a great asset to us in our struggle. We would love your help to bring peace to this world. Hmm... If you prefer to continue your journey alone, we would understand. You often find yourselves making journeys afar to answer requests for aid, yes? In that case, I will join you. I actually WAS beginning to tire of traveling alone. Thank you, Ku Hai. Right then! Now that we got ourselves a new ally, it's time to party! (As requests come to the prince from all across the land, staying with him may be a more efficient way to achieve my goal. Plus, I wager rumors gather easily there. Just where could he be now...?)

A Master's Teachings

We had a binding agreement, sir! You can't simply demand more money now that the job is done! No way that pittance covers the kind of danger I had to brave to get you here. Huh? Uh oh. Looks like an argument brewing. They appear to be a merchant and mercenary, so I presume it is some manner of disagreement over pay. It is not our business. Let us be off. Whatever you may think, I simply can't spare any coin for unnecessary expenses. You think compensating a man for putting his life on the line is an "unnecessary expense"?! How dare you?! N-now then! No need for that sword! I'll lower this sword once you apologize! I withdraw my previous statement. Pointing a sword at an unarmed man is the province of a bandit. I refuse to turn a blind eye to such a shameful act. He's right. Drop the sword. Mind your business! Your brutish behavior makes you no better than a wild dog. I won't stand here and be lectured! Take THIS! Huh? Where'd he go?! From where I am, I could send you to the endless dark before you even knew what was happening. In other words, your life is in my hands. So then, what will you do? Grrr... Grrrrrr! Do you now understand the humiliation of having a blade pointed at you? The fear of knowing that your life exists at the discretion of another? A warrior has power—but as a result, it must never be used wrongly. Fine, you win. ...But I'm still not happy about what I've been paid! Then you should resolve that through peaceful discussion, not violence. I was moved by what you said to that mercenary. They were not my words— they belong to Master Xuan. Who's that? He was the instructor at the dojo I used to attend. I respect him more than anyone. Could you tell me a little about him? I first met him at eight years old. I was attacked by fiends while playing in the woods, and he stepped in to save me. I'll never forget how radiant he looked as he wielded both his sword and chi kung. So you joined the dojo because you wanted to be more like him? That is correct—but as I spent time at the dojo, I found myself more impressed by his way of life than his strength. How so? While he was running his dojo, my master also traveled the land helping towns that were under attack from fiends. He always fought to help others. It left an impression on me, and made me want to be like him all the more. He sounds like a real role model. I'd love to meet him some time. Alas, he passed away several years ago, and nothing remains of his dojo. I'm sorry for your loss. I thank you. Still, not all has been lost, for his teachings live on inside me. So long as I swing my sword, his will continues to exist. That's very true. Is that the reason you travel? Are you trying to help people in the same way your master did? I do wish to continue his good works. But also... ...Yes? ...No. There is nothing else. (I get the impression there's more to this than he's willing to share with me. He looked so serious there...)

Episode 3

The Disappearing Disciple

Hraaah! Hah! Graaah! All right! There's just one fiend left in the village! I don't see it. Where could it be? Whiskers just ran outside! Come back, Whiskers! No! Get back here! GRAAAAGH! EEEEEEK! It's over there! Watch out! The distance is too great to cover on foot. This is a gamble, but... Haaah! Graaagh! It stopped moving! If one can control the flow of air itself, any foe is but a rock. Now fall! Haaah! Graaaagh... Nicely done, Ku Hai! Was that chi kung? Indeed. It is a binding technique in which one releases their chi to immobilize a distant opponent. My command of it is somewhat shaky, so I usually refrain from using it. I am pleased it turned out well. Oh, thank you so much! And Whiskers is fine! Yaaay! I am relieved to hear that. You're pretty great, mister. You're like that traveling man we met! You met someone else who can wield that technique?! Yeah. Whiskers runs away a lot, see? And one time, this man said "HAH!" like you just did, and she froze in place so I could run over and pick her up. Tell me more about him! TELL ME! Y-you're scaring me, mister! Calm down, Ku Hai. ...My apologies. I should not have lost my composure in such a manner. A while back, a traveling swordsman came to stay with us. In return for room and board, he worked the fields and looked after my daughter. What was his name? And do you know where he was headed next? Oh dear. It was three years ago, so I'm not sure if... Oh! Your sword! He had one just like it! By the heavens... That was Haoran! Someone you know, I take it? He was super nice to us, just like you! ...Well, except when you get all yell-y. Thank you for telling me this. Where could he have gone...? Can I ask you something, Ku Hai? Is it about this afternoon? Yes. I've never seen you lose composure like that, and it got me wondering about that Haoran fellow you mentioned. He was a student at the dojo in Peng Lai, and a fellow disciple of Master Xuan. He was more skilled at releasing his chi, while I excelled at using it to strengthen my body. Our skills became a natural complement to each other. Releasing chi was what you did earlier, right? Is that how you knew the girl was referring to him? That, plus the fact he had a sword the same as mine. Such weaponry is given only to those who attended my dojo. So why are you searching for this man? Judging by your reaction when you heard about him, I'm guessing it's nothing good. Do you remember when I told you that my master had passed away? He did not suffer a natural death. He was murdered...by Haoran. What?! One day, several years ago, I left the dojo to attend to some other business. The next day, I returned to find my master's lifeless body. His wounds were clearly the work of Haoran's skilled swordsmanship, but I have not seen him since. After that, I turned my back on my homeland and struck out on a journey. This was partially to inherit my deceased master's will, but in truth, I also wanted to track down Haoran. And what will you do when you find him? Do you plan to avenge your master? Haoran respected our master more than anyone else. I do not understand why he would kill him, so I plan to ask and find out. Then let me help you find him. No. This is my own matter, and I will not trouble you with it. But the more people searching, the better the chance of finding him. Besides, the problems of my friends are my problems too. I can't just ignore them. I cannot believe you would go so far to aid a simple wanderer such as me. But as you seem bent upon it, I will accept your kind offer.

Episode 4

False Justice

The prince and his friends are searching for Ku Hai's fellow student, Haoran. Sorry, Ku Hai. We struck out again. Worry not. We have found several useful leads—that's more than enough. Besides, he may no longer be alive. And if that is the case, I will never find out what drove him to murder our master. Hey, Ku Hai! I got some news about that Haoran cat ya been lookin' for. Did you find him?! Nah, but I DID hear a juicy rumor. Apparently there's a thug out there what's also lookin' for Haoran. Why would a thug be looking for him? No idea. But we might learn somethin' if we go chat him up. What should we do, Ku Hai? Can you take me to him? There. That's the guy lookin' for Haoran. All right. I'll speak to him alone so we don't put him on guard. We'll stay back and keep an eye on things. If it gets dangerous, we'll step in. Ho, friend. I hear you are searching for a man named Haoran? Maybe—what's it to you? I am also searching for him, and wondered if you might share what you know. Bwa ha ha! Looks like he put another chump outta work. Out of work? What do you mean? C'mon, you know what I'm talking about. The scam that Xuan guy was running! Master Xuan? A scam? Don't tell me you don't know about that! He'd gather up tough guys like me and get us to lead fiends to towns. Soon as everybody panicked, he'd rush in to save the day. Guy takes out a buncha fiends after leading them there in the first place? If that ain't a scam, I don't know what is. No... He would never... Guy paid well, too. REEEAL well. But then that idiot Haoran offed him and our gold mine collapsed. So now I'm penniless and outta work, and I'm gonna make Haoran pay! You lie! The hell you on about, buddy?! Master Xuan was an honorable man! He would never expose people to danger simply to increase his own standing! You're either a fool or an idiot, buddy, because Xuan was the most corrupt guy I ever came across—and I don't exactly run with packs of choirboys! He used to go on and on about how much he loved the way people thought he was some super great guy. Hell, apparently he had a student who worshiped him like some kinda hero. Man, we used to laugh about that! Ha! That... This can't be... Hang on a sec. You REALLY didn't know any of this? Like, not ANYTHING? Probably shoulda kept my trap shut. But since I can't have some nobody spreading this around, I guess I gotta take care of you. Sorry, buddy! Watch out! You got friends?! Man, I got no idea what's going on here, but I am GONE! Hold it right there, pal! We got another question or ten to ask ya. Oh, for the love of... How many of you people ARE there?! My apologies, Euden. Let's get back to the castle. You need to rest. ...Very well. ...... Can't sleep? I hear you confirmed that thug's story to be the truth? I'm sorry, but...Ranzal looked into it, and he says it all checks out. ...Do you remember my telling you how Master Xuan saved me from fiends when I was in the forest? I now know that, too, was a sham. Yet I spent years of my life looking up to him for it! ...Pathetic. The justice I believed in at the dojo was a complete lie. What am I supposed to believe in now? It's true that the man you believed in turned out to be a fraud. But that doesn't change how many people you've saved through the actions he inspired you to do. So don't lose sight of what you've been fighting for this entire time. ...Perhaps you're right. The justice I believed in may have been false, but the will it inspired is genuine. I swing my sword for others—and if I were to stop over something like this, it would make me truly pathetic. Then... I apologize for making you worry. My time of hesitation is over— I will continue on as I always have. In the meantime, I would ask you anew to help me search for Haoran. Of course. No matter what reason he gives, I will not change my way of life or stop trying to help others... But I MUST know the truth of his actions on that day.

Episode 5

Unshaken Resolve

One day, the prince and Ku Hai are asked to find an old woman stranded in the mountains. Thank you so much for finding me. I came to gather wild plants and got lost. We are glad to find you well. Let us see you back to the village. It's this way. Follow us. URK! Aaargh! M-my back! Uh oh. Do you need us to rub it for you? Such action will not be necessary. I can lessen her pain with my chi. Ah, my back feels so warm... Thank you, young man! There's no limit to the things you can do with chi kung. It was nothing. Besides, Haoran was always more skilled at this than me. Ahhh... So nice. It actually reminds me of another swordsman I recently met. Do go on. I wonder if you two are acquainted? You use the same skills, and your swords look very similar. Do you think she's talking about Haoran? Madam, I beg you to tell me all you know about this other swordsman! Acquainted, eh? Well, your friend saved me from fiends a couple weeks back. It was incredible. He stopped them with his voice, then sliced them to ribbons! He used the binding technique? Then it must be... He said he was in the middle of a journey, so I let him stay at my home for the night. Then he used the same skill you just did to ease the pain in my old back. Oh! And he even told me a story. Do you remember this tale? It was about his master. It sounds like he had done some pretty nasty things. He said he tried to stop him, but the two of them ended up fighting over it. ...... In the end, he did something he could never take back. Then he set off on a journey and took the truth of his actions with him. Apparently he never told a soul what happened until he met me. Why did he not tell anyone about his master's evil deeds? Surely someone would have understood. Why did he go on a journey alone? He said he kept quiet for the sake of a young fellow student of the same school. Ah! This student was apparently quite pure of heart, and worked day and night to follow in his master's footsteps. Your friend wanted this fellow to keep fighting for justice, and to become a fine swordsman in his own right. But he feared that if he were to find out about the master's evil deeds, he would become disillusioned and cast away his sword altogether. That's why he left the dojo without a word. Oh, but it was a sad story! His eyes were so full of tears. Haoran... Thank you for seeing me home safely. So Haoran tried to talk with Master Xuan to get him to change his ways... I guess no matter how many terrible things Xuan had done, Haoran still cared for him. Then they ended up fighting, and Haoran took his life—unintentionally, it seems. Which caused him to leave on a journey of atonement, taking the truth with him. It's a shame we had to learn of this in such a third-hand way. Indeed—but we still discovered what happened in the dojo that day, as well as why he left. That will suffice for now. Are you going to keep searching for him? I will. I clearly owe the man an apology for all of my past suspicions. I want to make him aware that my desire to do good burns ever bright. And also that I have found a new set of boon companions in all of you. We'll do all we can to help you reunite with him as soon as possible. And I will lend my sword to your mission of justice. I lost my master, but found new friends. I lost my way, but justice was ever there. Truly, I am blessed. What's that? ...Nothing. Nothing at all.
