- Kamuy may be a reference to the long-extinct Hokkaido wolf that lived in north-east Asia. The Ainu, indigenous peoples of Japan, believed this species of wolf to be the sacred Horkew Kamuy (the "howling god"), and revered them due to their similar hunting techniques. The Ainu would often leave out portions of their hunting kills to share with the wolves. Hunting the Hokkaido wolves was allowed, but no part of them was permitted to be wasted, and guns or poisoned arrows would not be allowed for initially slaying them. The Ainu would also let their dogs loose to breed with the wolves, in hopes of the pups gaining wolf-like traits.
