Episode 1

A Tenuous Truce

A platoon led by Commander Kirsty
has been ordered to hold a base located
in a mountainous border region.

Looks like we're completely surrounded. Ain't that a kick in the pants? Joachim? ...JOACHIM! Status report, now! Hoo boy. She ain't happy. Yes, Commander! Right away!

I hear we're surrounded by Barthe forces. Is there any chance it's a different army that's trying to fool us into thinking so? Not likely, ma'am. Their battle standards and uniforms are all of Barthe make, and it's difficult to imagine someone else going to all that trouble. In another piece of bad news, they appear to have five times our current numbers. Only Barthe scum would break a truce. Curse them and all their kind! This was just supposed to be a temporary garrison! We're not equipped for a siege! W-we're doomed! All of us! Stow that talk! Back to your posts! And in the future, if I want your opinion on a matter, I WILL ASK YOU FOR IT! Ma'am, yes, ma'am! Heavy hangs the crown, eh? A commander cannot tolerate unbridled speculation and panic among her troops. That way lies only anarchy. Barthe may well be flouting the truce, but we lack the information necessary to conclude that with any confidence. And besides, the state of the truce has no bearing on our current orders. Defend the base until the last man? Exactly. Now then, what do you predict our enemy's next move to be? Considering their numbers, they'll likely be satisfied with cutting off our supply lines and trying to starve us out. Though I wouldn't put it past them to poke us from time to time just to remind the men how dire their situation is. Then how would you defend this base if that is, indeed, their plan? I wouldn't. If we try to hold it all, they'll ferret out our weak points and pick us apart like crows. I suggest consolidating our forces in a specific area and defending that. Interesting. On another note, when can we expect reinforcements? Messengers have been dispatched, but they'll take some time to arrive. Looks like we'll have to hunker down here for the long haul. On a more positive note, I requested extra stocks of rations and fresh water from HQ before we left. Oh? Good thinking. To be honest, ma'am, I had a bad feeling about this assignment from the start. It almost makes up for the way you shirked your guard duty after we arrived. Hey, you're a taskmaster, you know? I can't possibly do everything myself. I don't recall ordering you to do so. Not this again... Er, what I mean is, ma'am, maybe you can just let it slide considering our current situation? It's in my nature to work alone, and sometimes it gets the best of me. The "lone wolf" has long been a convenient excuse for soldiers. That being said, I know we all have our own strengths and weaknesses to contend with. Exactly, ma'am! Always use the right tool for the job, as they say. However, you should trust that I will take your "nature" into account when considering your next assignment. Now then... Attention, all units! We will establish a defensive perimeter at this location! Reinforcements are en route! If we stand fast and hold the line, we WILL win the day! Oh, sure. Just hold the line. Piece of cake... Joachim! Yeah? Determine how much of this base is defensible and assign men to those areas. And if the enemy attacks, make sure they regret that decision. What?! Sorry, ma'am, but I thought we'd come to an understanding in terms of how I preferred solo assignments. You told me to use the right tool for the job, yes? And I can think of no better use for a lone wolf than to round up all of his packmates. That is not in ANY way what I meant. That's a rather long-winded way to say "Right away, Commander." R-right away, Commander! Man, she REALLY needs to relax. Maybe take a spa day or something...

...... Thank hell THAT'S over. This whole "giving orders" thing really ain't for me. Anyway, the perimeter looks solid, so now we just whittle and whistle until the cavalry arrives. It's gonna be tough with so few troops, but we'll just have to make it work. Can't let Kirsty down, after all. Still, until there's actually an enemy waving a sword in my face, there's no harm in kicking my feet up and... Huh?

It would seem there is a faction within Barthe that finds the truce unfavorable. Probably the same faction that's breathing down our damn necks right now. What would your move be, Joachim? Normally, I'd be more than happy to rescue some big shots and bask in the glory, but we've barely got the forces to hold this base as it is. I hate to say it—especially since a lot of this is my fault—but I think we need to leave 'em to their own devices. Agreed. A rescue attempt is simply too great a risk at this time. Oh...dear. I haven't finished. Having said that, if we DID succeed in this rescue, it may be possible to preserve the truce and avoid further bloodshed. D-does that mean...? Sudden Stratagem

A squad under Joachim's command has been
tasked with rescuing a team of negotiators.
With Noelle's assistance, they manage to
cross the border and infiltrate Barthe.
At a forest near the Barthe border...
So, um, over there. The negotiators are being held in that camp. Damn. It's guarded tighter than a henhouse in fox country. What should we do, sir? (What SHOULD we do? Split into two, maybe?) (One group can act as a decoy to draw their forces, while the other sneaks in and rescues the captives.) (Nah, that's no good.) (If they see through the plan, it'll mean I sent everyone to their deaths.) (I can't have that.) (It'd be my sister all over again...)

Please forgive my breach of protocol, sir, but shouldn't we consider the possibility that this could be a diversion? Explain yourself. Our borders are sealed tight, sir. It stretches the boundaries of logic to think a large force could have snuck up on us unseen. A valid point. Which would mean... They plan to draw our attention with this charade, then steal the hostages out from under our noses! We need more intelligence before making a decision one way or the other. Shall we move the hostages to the innermost part of the camp to be safe? Do it. These fools will soon learn Barthe is not so easily deceived as all that!

Captain! What is it, soldier? Did you find the Svenitlan army? Just a few stragglers in the woods, sir. Then it IS a diversion! They'll surely attempt to infiltrate our camp soon, so increase security around the hostages. Uh, regarding that, sir. The hostages seem to have...um...escaped. WHAT?!

Ha ha ha! I can't believe we pulled it off! Joachim's strategy worked like a charm! I never would've come up with that. You really pulled the wool over their eyes! Why is Noelle running toward us? *pant* *pant* What's the rush, Noelle? The Barthe army has mounted a full offensive on the mountain base! Damn. They were short-handed enough BEFORE our squad departed. (It'll take too much time for us to crawl back through that tiny tunnel...) (Dammit! I have to help Kirsty!) Joachim! What? Twilight's Aid

We're about to lose the sun. Commander! Enemy troops are approaching from the cliffside path! They're also moving up the mountain path on the other side of the camp! We can't possibly hold them all off! Destroy the path by the cliffs. Force them onto the mountain path. Cover the mountain path in stones just large enough to impede their march. Move the injured deeper into the base. We'll reduce our perimeter and tighten our defenses. Yes, ma'am! (The wolf's jaws close around us. Should I have ignored the rescue?) A Productive Respite

*yawn* If you are bored, I'm happy to find something for you to do. I dunno. Somehow I just haven't felt very motivated since we got back. But YOU'VE certainly been busy. You went from battling our enemies to battling a mountain of paperwork. All part of my charge. Well, I'll be sure to avoid promotions at all cost. Honestly, why are you even here? You were granted leave days ago. Guess I couldn't bear to leave your side. ...... Easy, there! Just a joke, is all. I'll get out of your hair if you want. Joachim, listen to me. Ma'am? You saved my life. I won't forget it. Thank you. Hey, whoa. This isn't like you at all. Frankly, I didn't save you so much as nearly ruin everything and then figure out how to pull my butt out of the fire. Enough with the false modesty. Without your little surprise attack, I wouldn't be standing here today. So if you won't use your leave, I'll have to reward you myself. Anything strike your fancy? Oh, nothing in particular.
