- In real-world history, Jeanne D'Arc (French for Joan of Arc) was a heroine of France during the Hundred Years' War. She claimed to receive visions from angels and saints that she should assist Charles VII in liberating France from English occupation. She joined the French army and stated that she could prove her claim of divine intervention by ending the siege of Orleans, which had been going on for 5 months. With her aid, the army successfully captured the city in just 9 days, Jeanne supposedly bearing a banner instead of a sword, and she became a symbol of hope for the French. She was later captured by the English, convicted of heresy, and burned at the stake in 1431. When the war ended 15 years later, a retrial was opened and she was declared innocent. This went a step further in 1920, when she was granted the title of a saint.
