Episode 1

Cheapskate

Hm? Hey, Euden? There's some sorta fight happenin' outside the castle. Hold on, Irfan! I'm begging you—just stay with my unit a little longer! I told you when I started working for you, Commander. If I don't get the rates I want, I quit. Y-you did say that, b-but...but... Without you, we won't last long... Then you better cough up some cash. I only work as much as I'm paid. Hey! Is someone named Euden living in this castle? That's me. Are you sure you want to leave things as they are with that knight? Oh yeah, I'm done with that charity case. But that's not why I'm here. Name's Irfan, and I'm a mercenary. You hiring? Well, we could always use more capable fighters, but— Then it's your lucky day! I'm pretty damn capable, if I do say so myself. I can take down entire legions on my own—so long as I'm fairly compensated. He ain't lyin'. I've heard'a this guy. He's famous— the best of the best. I see... Well, I'd love to have someone of your talent in my ranks, but— Right then; it's settled! Just gotta negotiate terms of payment. Er, I was getting to that. The thing is— You're a prince of Alberia, aren't you? I bet all the knights in your employ are already filthy rich. Hiring me was the right choice. You pay me, and I'll swear undying fealty to you. I'll do anything you ask, so long as you ask with sweet, sweet cash. And considering you got all the cash in the world, there isn't anything I won't— Except I don't. Have all the cash in the world, that is. My pockets are running rather shallow as of late. What? What are you saying? Are you a prince or not?! I am... But unlike my siblings, I don't have any territories to call my own, so I don't have much of an income to speak of... You...you gotta be kidding me! Fine, then. Forget it. I'll go back to my current benefactor and... ...And do nothing, because I just quit! Aw, damn it all! Er, I'm sorry? But you can still join us if you'd like. I don't... Wait. You may be broke now, but you ARE a prince... And that means you might become king one day! Okay. Fine. I'll join you. Normally I never let anyone defer payment, but I'll make an exception for you. You can pay me once you're king. Are you sure? Yeah. Besides, that last guy doesn't have any money and he never will. Just remember, I don't work for free. When the bill comes due, it'll be steep. After all, how much I work depends on how much I get paid.

Episode 2

The Irfan Way

Those plains up there look ripe for an ambush, Euden. You're right. Though I don't know how we'll avoid passing through them... If the enemy is preparing to ambush us, they'll be waiting on the other side. Just...there. In the shadow of those trees. How do you know? I've seen this tactic a million times. Just a glance tells me all I need to know. If we want to be certain, we ought to send someone to scout ahead. Would you go? You're the most qualified. No. What? Scouts have to put their lives on the line. And you haven't paid me enough yet for me to risk my life. I suppose that's true... I've barely been able to pay you anything. This is hardly the time to be discussing money, Irfan. We are all in danger if we don't gather intelligence on the enemy. Like I don't know that. All I'm saying is, you better get rich quick if you want me to risk my life for you. Money, money, money—that is all you ever think about! Have you no sense of loyalty to your benefactor? I'm a mercenary. We work for money. That's pretty much the end of it. Knights are the saps who work for loyalty. Why, you insolent— It's all right, Elisanne. I'm the one at fault for not being able to pay enough. Here—I'll be the scout. Don't be stupid, Euden! I can't have my benefactor die on me! He's right! You must give more thought to those who rely on you! I-it was just a suggestion... Honestly... All right, there is no other option; I shall be the scout. Wait here, Your Highness. Approach from the right of the trees. They likely won't have as many eyes there. You say you do not work without pay, yet you give me advice? I've been paid enough for a bit of consulting, at least. I do exactly as much as I'm paid. Not a hair more, not a hair less. Hmph. Very well. The right side it is... Why ARE you so fixated on money, Irfan? I have to be, since you of the upper crust live without a thought for it. Greed is the only way drifters like me survive.

Episode 3

Tradition and Ambition

The sun's setting... I had hoped to return to the castle before dark, but that's looking unlikely. Well, you can forget about camping in this wilderness. It's way too dangerous. There's a town nearby. I'll take you there. At last, you start to think of those outside of yourself! Oh, don't worry. I'm adding it to your bill. Tch... Of course... It was foolish of me to expect better of you... Oof, my blade has seen better days... I'm gonna go find someone to sharpen it. There's a blacksmith off the main thoroughfare. I'd go there. It's a little pricier than the others, but well worth it. I will go fetch us food and water for tomorrow, Euden. You'll find everything you need at the stalls in the back alleyway. They'll be open even at this time of night, and you won't find fresher fruit anywhere. You certainly know a lot about this town, Irfan. Do you come here often? I guess. My people own no land, but they come here to peddle their wares. Mostly meat and furs they get from hunting. Then they use the money to buy weapons or medicine. We've relied on this town for a long time. Your people are nomads? That must be difficult. You said this region was dangerous, right? And the number of fiends is growing, so being outside isn't safe. Well... Yeah. Fiend attacks have made our numbers dwindle over the years. Wouldn't it be best to take refuge in a town somewhere? Even for a short while? Yeah. I think it would. But my people are too proud. They'd never accept protection from a foreign land. They'd choose death before letting anyone else shield them. ...We've always been like that. I would never outright tell them to swallow their pride, but there's also no reason for them to let tradition be their ruin. I hate how old-fashioned they are, so I try to open myself up to new experiences as much as I can. Change things up. Leaving my people to live on my own, getting fancy new duds, taking part in whatever craze is sweeping the capital... But no matter how much I've changed, my people are still the same. And since I'm our leader's eldest son, I can't exactly abandon them. You must worry about them constantly... There has to be some way for your people to live without fear. The way I see it, there can't NOT be. I wanna build them a town of their own. One where they call the shots. If they owned the place, I know they'd agree to live there. But you need a lot of cash to build something like that... Is that why you're always so concerned about money? I've been rambling on for too long. Forget I said anything. All right... If you don't want to tell me, that's fine. Just let me say this: the fact that you're fighting for your people really is wonderful. Wh-what part of ＂forget I said anything＂ didn't you understand?!

Episode 4

More Precious Than Money

*pant* *pant* Did...did we get 'em all? I believe so... But we cannot rest easy yet. If we keep running without knowing where the enemy is, they will soon corner us. We must send someone to scout the enemy's location, Euden. I shall do— Irfan, can we count on you? You want to send Irfan? I admit it would be helpful if he agreed, but you know he will not! She's right. I don't do anything I'm not paid to do. If you need a scout, ask someone el— It's true—I don't have money to pay you. But one day, I'll have my own kingdom. And when that time comes, I could give part of that domain to you, Irfan. What? You're offering to pay him in land instead of money? That's right. Your own territory to do with as you see fit. How does that sound, Irfan? It sounds pretty hypothetical. I suppose that makes this a matter of faith. You either believe me capable of claiming my own kingdom, or you don't. ...All right. I'll do it. Scouting never takes me long. Are you serious, Irfan? I told you before: normally I never let anyone defer payments. But I trust you to keep your word. What's going on, Euden? I just promised him something more precious than money, that's all. I'm back. Wanna know what I found? Already? That was almost too fast... I produce results to match the payment. That's just how I operate. Don't worry. Anyway, there are four enemies for each one of us. They've already started to surround us, but their formation is incomplete. Their net has plenty of holes to the south. If we all head that way, we should be able to break out of their grasp with ease. There's the mercenary I'd heard so much about. I knew sending Irfan was the right call. We ain't safe yet, Euden. Can't relax until we're outta this trap. Not true. Relax if you want, Prince Euden. You've got me to protect you. After all, the payment you promised is worth at least that much. Now let's get going!

Episode 5

You Get What You Pay For

Prince Euden, do you have a moment? We need to talk. What's the matter, Irfan? You're not usually so serious. It's important. Before, you said you would give me land once you claimed your kingdom. You meant that, right? Is that what you're worried about? Of course I meant it—every word. I'm not the kind of person who breaks promises. It might take some time before I can make good on it... But I'm doing everything in my power to make sure I can deliver. I see. That puts my mind at ease. Still, you really are different... What? Did I say something odd? I normally never trust anyone who says they'll pay me later. Most of the time they feed me some line, like... ＂I'll pay you when I make it big, so it's part of your job to help me succeed,＂ and they try to get me to work for free like that. But not you. You said you'd do everything in your power. You don't expect me to keep your promise for you; you're gonna do that on your own. For as much as you're helping me, isn't it only right that I help you equally in return? You would think so, but none of my prior benefactors would agree. I've never worked for anyone like you before. That's why I know I can trust you when you say you'll pay me when you can. Can I ask you something? Why is it you only talk about money, and never what you hope to do with it? I'm sure there would have been plenty of other employers willing to help you out if they'd known what I do. Because I can't. If I ran my mouth to everyone, my people might find out what I was planning. And they would rather die than accept help from anyone else. Even if I am our leader's eldest... If they found out I'd been risking my life to earn enough money to help them, they would never accept it. But if the prodigal son just so happened to use a large sum of cash he acquired through sheer luck to build them a town... That would be fine. I don't just want to save their lives. I want to preserve their stupid, old-fashioned sense of pride, too. I can understand that. So, Prince Euden. As a descendant of such prideful people, let me swear to you again: I will do whatever it takes to make sure your dreams become a reality. It wouldn't do for a leader's son to just twiddle his thumbs and wait for someone else to give him land, after all. I've never said something like this to anyone before, but...I hope you'll fight beside me to realize our shared vision. How could I refuse? I'm counting on you, Irfan. Don't you worry, Your Highness. You get what you pay for with me, and you've promised to pay me a lot.
