Episode 1

A Worthy Challenger

Do you think to make me your supper, you bottom-feeding whelp? Ho, that's rich! Let me give you another opinion on the matter! Haaaaah! Ha! What's wrong, beast? Did your fangs not sink into flesh? Come at me, then! Give me your all! Make me LIVE! ...Hmph. Craven! Coward! Put your back into it! Make this an event I will relish forever! Uraaagh! Is that all? Ah, a fine hunt indeed! You were a worthy adversary, Rathalos. The swell of tension in such life-or-death struggles is what makes me feel alive. Still, is there truly a difference between the battle that ensues during a hunt and standard combat warfare? I'd thought there to be a special joy in hunting monsters, yet I feel no different than I do after the basest tavern brawl. Well, I'll not find the solution by sitting here and mulling it over. Time to return to the Halidom and take on the next request from... Hark! What is that sound? It's another Rathalos—and a large one! Far bigger than the specimen I so recently bested. Aaaah ha ha! Yes! YEEEEEES! Oh, I have only begun to fight! Gah! My weapon is blunted! Curse my lack of preparation—I fought too many battles between sharpenings. *huff* And I find myself most weary... Urgah!

Heh. How long has it been since I took a blow such as that? Got my arm with that one, did you? Ha! Aaaah ha ha ha ha! A sheer drop off the cliff to my back and no other clear path to escape... Yeeeees! Aaaah ha ha ha ha! THIS is what I have been searching for! THIS is life itself! Injured arm or no, I can still wield a blade. And if you should find a way to sever all of my limbs, I shall come at you with the stumps! NOW COME! GIVE ME MORE! LET ME TASTE YOUR FEAR! Blast, but this wind is powerful! Hurgh? Urgaaaaah! Long have I craved the pain of battle. A pain that cuts so deep it seems ready to drag me into the depths of death's abyss. I was showered in gouts of scorching fire. I could not stand. Death was at my shoulder. And yet...I wasn't satisfied. All I felt was resentment. Yes, resentment! There is no joy in being crushed by an overwhelming power and scattered to the wind like so many dying leaves. Such an ending will not make me feel alive, and thus do I refuse to accept it! I will persevere! Humiliation will NOT be the emotion that encompasses my final hour! If I just had but one more chance, I would end that beast for certain.

Episode 2

After the Fall

I...live? But where am I...? Ah, the top of a tree, is it? What a formidable stroke of bad luck. Still, the beast has fearsome breath indeed to send me flying so far. That thing was far larger than a standard Rathalos—perhaps it even approached the legendary "gold crown" status! Also, its roar was somehow lower when compared to other Rathalos. Ah! That sound! Is it nearby?! Urk?! Blast. My arm has been dislocated. Well, that's easily solved. Just let me... Hnnnngh! *snap* GYAAAAAAAARRRRGH! *pant* There. Back in place again. Though I'd be a fool to attempt a hunt in such a miserable state. And yet, if I DID attempt the hunt now, I would surely find myself in a glorious life-or-death struggle! ...Heh. But I'll not be humiliated like that again. When next we meet, I will end the day standing astride my foe's bloodied corpse! By my honor as a hunter, I WILL see you slain, Rathalos! But in order to do so, I must first live to fight another day. A few rats and the occasional sip of rainwater should be enough to regain my strength. Ho, but wait! I almost forgot the item pouch they gave me when I set out! Let us see what is inside... Hmm, yes. First-aid meds, a portable BBQ spit, and some hunter's notes. Now to see what nuggets of wisdom the notes have in store for me... "One can mix honey with first-aid meds to produce first-aid med+, which acts as a potent restorative."

Well, that seems simple enough. And a few bees are certainly no match for this fine suit of armor! Come, bees! Today you meet your... No. No! They're flying through the gaps in my armor! AAAAAARGH! NOT MY EYES! THE BEES ARE IN MY EYES!

Aaaaugh! C-c-c-cooooold! *wheeze* Can't believe...I had to jump in a lake... They certainly ARE persistent little critters, aren't they? Still, this may be a bit of luck! While I'm here, I'll just use this bait and tackle to catch myself a little spot of dinner. I never thought I would find myself fishing on a battlefield. Still, such things must be old hat to a seasoned hunter. And perfect, just as I thought, there's some advice in the hunter's notes. ...Hrm. Looks like I just cast my lure and wait for a bite. Simple enough. Wait for the bobber, and then... A bite! Hnnnngh! Blast, this fish had a lot of fight! Er, but why are its eyes protruding from its head? ...Eh, it's probably fine. No time to cook it—I'll just have to eat this little fellow raw. Down the hatch! *munch* Gaaaah! It exploded in my mouth! Oh, but that was TERRIBLY unpleasant! Perhaps I'll just throw the rest of this exploding fish into my pouch and focus on hunting more traditional prey.

Graaargh! Hah! Curses! My blade's still dull! I'll never be able to take out a fiend like this. Graaurgh! Ungh! Why you... Hraargh! Well, if cutting isn't an option, I'll have to try THROWING! Gwah?! Eat my skinning knife! *pant* Hunt...complete. Finally! Real meat! Let me just set up this BBQ spit here... Heh. This is almost too easy. Huh? I burned it! Oh, of all the... I barely had it on the flame at all! Yes, well, perhaps it tastes better than it looks. *munch* *cough* *hack* *wheeeeeeze* By all the gods old and new, that is terrible! Right then! This is not the time to give up. I'll just have to try it again. Ah ha ha! Oh, what an unsightly mess! To think that I—a man feared by all as the mad warrior—would find myself in such a wretched and desperate state. Chased by bees, choking on fish, burning my dinner to cinders... A truly pathetic showing! But it's all worth it to face that monster once more. If what lies ahead is a thrilling hunt of that beast, and truly feeling alive... Now! Ah, grilled to perfection! Excellent! If I win the day, my temporary humiliation will soon taste as sweet as this meat! Aaaah ha ha! Just you wait, Rathalos— your gold crown will be MINE!

Episode 3

Avoiding Conflict

Grr... Hmph. It's gone. All the stamina in the world won't change anything if I just hunt monsters at random. I must return to the Halidom and challenge that gold-crown Rathalos anew.

(Well, if the beast truly seeks me out, I'll gain little by trying to hide.) (The only choice is to challenge it to single combat here and now! Go, Berserker! Slay your foe!) (...And yet, why do I hesitate? This is my chance for a rematch where either the glory of victory or a warrior's death await!) (...No. It must not be this way.) (If I wager my life on this fight, it will doubtless end in the same humiliation as last time.) (I've no wish to be toyed with and slaughtered like a mouse before a cat!) (I must stay hidden. I must stay calm.) (I want to hunt that monster, and I want to DEFEAT it!) (I'll crawl on the ground like a worm if it gives me that chance! I'll suffer any indignity for just one clear shot!) (I don't give a damn what it takes— I WILL get through this!) (My weapon may be blunted, but a hunter always has this...) (A stone!) Ho, Rathalos! Come for me, if you dare! Ah! Graaagh! This scorched smell... I thought I was dead for sure. But no, all is well. It seems Rathalos spied the fiend from earlier and burned it to a crisp. Avoiding conflict with a decoy is not a route I am much familiar with. Still, this sort of maneuver isn't so bad. A true hunter's move, in fact! After all, one cannot live only on fights where their life is tossed aside!

Episode 4

The Thrill of the Hunt

Berserker! You're well! We were quite worried when you didn't come back. Apologies. I ran into some trouble. Speaking of troubles, might you post a request for me? What sort of request? On the way back from dealing with the Rathalos, I ran into an even bigger one. I want to take it down. And if I wish to hunt it properly, I'll need you to issue a request. Quite upright of you. Very well. The clear condition shall be the extermination of one Rathalos. Will that suffice? This is no mere Rathalos—this one is a gold crown! I confirmed it in the hunter's notes while I was on the way back. My thanks for the notes, by the way. I'd have been lost without them. Perhaps you'd share the story so I can draw up the written request in full? Very well. But do try not to judge me harshly; it is a rather shameful tale. You see, it all began...

...And then you ate a RAW scatterfish? My word! Those are mainly used for crafting, you know. And to think you had to defeat a monster with a skinning knife! Here, take this whetstone for your next encounter. Still, that was a fine bit of thinking to distract your foe with a stone. You're a splendid hunter already if you came up with something so quick-witted on the spot. A hunter, eh? Heh... AAAH HA HA HA! Goodness, what's wrong? Ah, I just remembered the thrill I got from stalking my prey as a true hunter. It was a feeling totally unlike any that I have ever experienced. Well, you certainly LOOK thrilled! Still, the most important thing is that you enjoyed the hunt. Right then! Your request is registered. I take it you'll be off straightaway? I'm already out the door. Let me provide you with provisions first. This large barrel bomb should be just the thing you need, along with the whetstone. Oh, and as thanks for telling me such a thrilling tale, please take this small token. Oh? My thanks. That, my friend, is an indispensable item for any hunter. To use it, you just— I have seen them used in the field. Then I'll spare you the explanation. Good luck, Berserker—I know you'll return here a champion.

This euphoria will hone my spirit like a whetstone! But wait. Is there not another use for Rathalos dung besides finding a trail? Let me just take dung in hand aaand... There! It's smeared all over my gear! This should cloak my human scent from any monsters in the area. Thankfully, the Rathalos and I don't have the kind of relationship where we worry about appearances. Our connection runs far deeper than such!

Ah ha! There it is! And conveniently asleep, at that. Now to set this large barrel bomb right next to it. (Ha! Look how close I am! My dung seems to have done the trick.) (Still, this thing is simply massive. Will this bomb even make a dent?) (The first strike oft makes the difference between victory and defeat...) (Which means I'll have to try everything I can!) (Let me just stuff all of my ingredients into this bomb and see if...) (Oh ho! A mega barrel bomb! So THAT'S how you're supposed to use a scatterfish!) (I have you now, Rathalos.)

Wash over me with your rage! With every strike, the feeling grows! Oh, how I've waited for this moment! And I know you feel the same, which is why I've wagered everything on this hunt! My health, stamina, and weapon sharpness are all perfection! Now, come! Face my feelings! Let me truly LIVE! Let us engage in a hunt where our very lives are the prize! Battle me! Struggle and strain! Our back and forth IS life! Weak! Enough! I will put all that I am into the power of this slash! HRAAAAGH! Ha ha ha! So you seek the safety of the skies, do you? Well, I still have a trick or two up my own sleeve. Time to put the Wyventurer's gift to good use! ...As I thought, it has no killing power on its own. However, it still has a use! That paintball may be a common tool, but it is also a hunter's finest weapon! Now an invisible chain links the two of us. There is no escape for you, Rathalos! This will be your end, my adversary.

Episode 5

A Hunter Victorious

Ah, Berserker. How did the quest go? See for yourself. Amazing! These are all materials taken from a Rathalos! I'd no need of such things up to this point, but things have changed. For these are the fruits of my hard-fought battles—fruits that make me feel alive! Feeling alive isn't just something that occurs during battle. What happens before and after are also connected. This has been a new revelation for me, and I wish to thank you for it. Thank me? But I did nothing. No. You gave me this chance. And what chance is that? Before now, I sought to feel alive only in the midst of battling strong foes. I never thought there was another way to achieve that sensation. But during this most recent request, I felt alive in a way I never have. You did, did you? Indeed. It was a kinship on the verge of death. I fear I do not follow. Only one of us could live on to fight another day. In that way, we were kin on the precipice of death itself. This can only occur in a fight between two powerful foes—a fight where both parties are forced to put their lives on the line. When one is struggling to escape death, each thrust and parry of combat provides a true sense of satisfaction! I'd never felt that in a fight before. It was a satisfaction born from our struggle, and one I won't easily replicate. Still not completely following this, but I'm glad you seem happy. Your paintball gift was the final piece of the puzzle. It kept us entwined until the very end. Oh? Interesting. I was just trying to give you the same tools I would any hunter. In that case, I thank you for your usual support. It led to a most satisfying hunt! Well, at any rate, your quest is complete. And on that note... Ha ha! If you are truly so eager, I have a number of new quests posted and ready. Yes... YEEEEEES! Many of these monsters are quite strong, so please take all due caution. Set your worries aside! I have my own way of hunting, and plan to enjoy this hunt according to that style. Still, I won't just dive in headfirst and throw my life on the line. Instead, I'll take the time to devote myself to it utterly, that I might prolong the anticipation. That heightened tension and pressure will make me feel alive in a whole new way!
