Episode 1

The Oracle

Each enemy seemed stronger than the last today. Is everyone all right? Why ya worryin' about us? Yer the one what took the brunt of it. We've nearly returned to the castle. I shall tend to your injuries there. Uh, guys? There's somebody standin' in front of the gates. Euden, I presume? You are wounded... Allow me. Whoa! I'm...completely healed. Now for your companions... Now THAT'S impressive! You may pass me over. I have nothing with which to compensate you for your service. Pay it no mind; the goddess bids us live with no thought of wealth. I seek no compensation from those I heal. You provide such wondrous healing free of charge? Please, put your doubts aside and allow me to treat you. I cannot bear to leave anyone in pain. You have our thanks, whoever you are. My name is Hildegarde. I am a senior priestess of the Church and am in charge of an abbey. If I'm not mistaken, the Church has only a handful of such senior leaders. That explains your powers. Few are capable of such feats of healing. My office is not of importance. I have come here to ally myself with you. Oh? Why would someone of your stature want to align themselves with us? Some time ago, the goddess appeared to me in a vision and commanded that I aid you, Euden. A ＂vision,＂ eh? Sounds like a load'a bull. ...Excuse me? How dare you insinuate I would...LIE! I swear it before the goddess herself, I never utter falsehoods! I, uh... Sorry. Should've said nothin'. Heed my words: there is nothing more despicable than lying. Such filth will never pass my lips. Euden, I swore to the goddess I would aid you. I beseech you now, allow me a place in your castle. ...Very well. If you say you're my ally, you are most welcome. Thank you. I honed these powers to serve the goddess, and they will serve you just as well. Uh, hey... You sure about this? What harm could come of it? She seems nice enough...I think. Though we probably shouldn't lie in her presence. She seems...serious about it.

Episode 2

A Strict Smile

I...I can't believe this... How can this be?! Is something wrong, Hildegarde? Oh, something is very wrong indeed! There are far too many in this castle who disrespect the teachings of the goddess! Ya think? I don't get that impression. Of course you wouldn't, Ranzal! You have a taste for banquets and eat enough in one sitting to feed entire families! Greed and gluttony are sins! W-well, that's... I mean, sure, but... She's got a point, Ranzal. You do have quite the appetite. And you, Euden! Wait, me? You are our leader! You cannot continue to show such lenience toward those who disrespect the goddess! Austerity, obedience, purity—this is what the goddess teaches! This is what must be exemplified by all! Come now. None of us can claim to be perfect. That's why we have clergy like you, yes? To help remind us? That is true. But even so, following the teachings and giving thanks to mana are the very basics of being a follower of Ilia! When was the last time any of you did so? You must adopt it into your daily routines! Y-yes... I understand. I should hope you do. Now then, let us pray to the mana to express our gratitude. What? Here?! Where else? Now, I will recite the prayer of thanks, and you will repeat after me. ...Fine. Let's get this over with. You too, Euden. Guess we should probably just go along with her, uh, demands. Hm? Grrrraaaaaarrrgghh! This is the last of 'em, Euden! Got it! Hyaaah! Phew... That takes care of that. Is everyone all right? Graaagghh... The fiend still lives. We must be certain of its demise before claiming the task complete. Ha! That fiend would have soon perished had we left it be, Hildegarde. Should we not avoid spending our energy needlessly? The Church teaches that fiends are abominations undeserving of even the slightest mercy. There's that fire and brimstone again... Now that the fiends have been dispatched, I can heal the wounded. Come. You are next, Ranzal. Me? Nah, I'm all right. Do you aim to anger me? What? No! What'd I do now?! Time and again I have warned you not to lie in my presence. Do not attempt to hide your wounds from me. Th-this is just a scratch! Ain't nothin' to worry about. Even the smallest scratch may turn fatal if left untreated. Come, let me heal you. Uh, thanks, I guess? Do not hesitate to seek my help in the future. Now then, who else is wounded? Kinda hard to believe this is the same lady who just mercilessly finished off that fiend. Right? Though I suppose her actions come from her adherence to the teachings of the goddess. If you look at it that way, there's really no difference between Hildegarde the warrior and Hildegarde the healer. Guess that's the level of commitment ya gotta have to be a senior priestess. It's pretty impressive! Oh! The time of prayer is upon us! We must kneel and give thanks to the goddess! H-here? Now?! There is no excuse to neglect prayer, no matter the time or place. Now kneel! Maybe ya really can be too committed...

Motivations

*sigh* Back at last! I wasn't sure my arms would be able to carry all these supplies. Indeed. Euden, this calls for a nice long rest once you've brought everything in. I see you had a productive day of shopping. Welcome back. We did. I'm going to go put all of this away. It'll just take a second. ...... Is something wrong, Hildegarde? N-never mind me! I... It's good to be home. Er, indeed. Welcome back. That was...strange. I wonder what's on her mind. Home... Are you all right, Hildegarde? You were acting odd when we got back. It's nothing! Just... I haven't had anyone to welcome me back in quite some time. It touched me. How long has it been? Since I arrived at the Church as a young girl, I have always been the one to greet those who come seeking guidance... You've been there since you were a child? Yes. It must have been...oh, 20 years since I first joined the Church. That's a long time. Why do you devote so much to the Church, Hildegarde? Well... Please do not speak a word of this to the others, but...my parents gave me up to an orphanage. They promised they would return for me someday, so long as I committed myself to the teachings of the goddess. But that was a long, long time ago, and they have yet to return. You've adhered to the goddess's teachings all this time because of that promise? Not at all. I follow the goddess because I do not wish to become anything like my parents. I do not want to be the kind of person who makes and breaks promises so easily. There...there is no part of me that wishes to see my parents now. ...But enough of this. I have bored you long enough. Please put it from your mind. Excuse me. You say you don't want to see your parents, Hildegarde, but are you sure it's the truth?

Devotion and Belief

Hildegarde! Impeccable timing; we were just about to start a meeting to discuss the coming battles. ...... She walked right past us... It didn't seem she even noticed we were here. She has not been herself of late. I think I can guess why. Let's talk later, Elly. There's something I need to do first. Hildegarde, wait! Hildegarde! What? Oh. Do you need something, Euden? Yes. When you told me about your parents the other day, it got me thinking. You said you follow the goddess so you won't become like your parents, but really it's because you still believe in their promise, isn't it? What are you saying? I...I care nothing for their promise... Your expression told me differently. What expression? You looked so lonely, talking about your parents. That wasn't the face of someone who doesn't care. Stop. I do not wish to discuss this further. Wait, Hildegarde! Leave me be! You've been waiting for them all this time, haven't you? Waiting for the day they come back and say how proud they are of your devotion to the Church. *sniff* Wh-why am I crying...? Oh, Ilia... I understand now. I have been lying to myself this entire time. Have faith in your parents, Hildegarde. What? What if something happened that prevented them from coming back for you? You have to keep believing in them. And in the meantime, I'll be right here waiting along with you. I had lost hope for so long... But with you by my side, I feel I might have faith anew.
