A Halloween Promise

(Garuda... At one point, she wanted me as a sacrifice.) (She did some bad things, but only 'cause she was lonely. She's actually a really kind dragon.) (She protected our village for a long time, and that's when we became friends!) Hey, Garuda—have you heard of Halloween? That is the harvest festival held in autumn, yes? I recall it being a popular occasion in the village. You got it! So, um, I was thinking this year, you and I could maybe... Um... You would see us celebrate Halloween together? W-wait, how did you know? Heh. Your face does not hide much. And thinking on it now, I realize I only ever observed the village's festivities from atop my cliff. Exactly! So we should totally do Halloween together this year. We're friends, after all! Thank you, Lowen. Let us do that. However, I must be away. When the leaves turn to crimson, I shall return. Huh? You have to go somewhere? Worry not, Lowen. I shall return by Halloween; on that you have my word. Pinky promise? ...Yes. I pinky promise. ...... (It's almost Halloween, but there's no sign of Garuda...) (Did something happen maybe? Oh gosh, was she attacked by fiends?!) (No. Garuda is strong. But then...why isn't she back yet?) Where are you, Garuda? You look deep in thought, Lowen. Is something wrong? Lowen's Older Sister Louise Oh, no. I'm super okay! Uh huh. Go on, tell me what's worrying you. I-I... Aww, how did you know? It's written across your face in big bold letters: "Current status: WORRIED BEYOND REASON." Now, tell me what's on your mind. Um, well... Do you think Garuda's gonna make it back for Halloween? Come again? We promised to spend Halloween together. She said she'd be back when the leaves turned red, but they're all done changing and she's still gone... I was thinking she might've been attacked by fiends, or maybe she got a cold or something... Or maybe I scared her when I said I wanted to spend Halloween together... Oh Lowen, sweetie. It'll be okay. The wind is carrying your feelings. There's no way Garuda could miss them. *sniff* Louise... Hey, here's an idea: I'll make you a Halloween costume! You can look forward to wearing it around with Garuda. How does that sound? That way, even if Garuda isn't back until just before the fun starts, you can get started right away. ...Yeah, okay. Thank you, Louise. (You'll be back in time, right Garuda? Yeah. I know you will. You promised...) Halloween Day Ha ha, look! I've got feathers on my head! And a big long tail! You look ADORABLE, Lowen! N-no, I look cool! I'm just like the prankster fiend from my book! That's right. I know how much you like that book, so I did my best to recreate the look. Thank you so much, Louise! This is the best costume EVER. I feel like a whole new me! Yes, I'm sure Garuda will be quite surprised by your new look. Hey Louise, could you lend me a hand? This is a bit much for one person to carry... Oh, sure. I'll help too! That's all right Lowen, I can handle it. You stay here and enjoy yourself. Kids should have all the fun they can on Halloween. But...what's the point in having fun all by myself? Garuda's still not back... Are my prayers not reaching her? Hm... Oh, what's that? Do the two of you promise to behave yourselves from here on? Yeah... Honestly, you're both much too old for such chicanery. Halloween or not, you should not be snatching food. All right already, ya made yer point! Not that it'll stick... Now, Luca! Run for it! Maybe if I do a few pranks, Garuda would show up to scold ME? Wait, no, I can't! Cleo would be mad. Buuuut... If it brings Garuda back in time... ...... I mean, it IS Hallowen, and I AM dressed up like a prankster fiend, so...maybe it's fine? Yeah! I'm gonna do my very best to be a naughty boy today! Becoming Naughty

Okay, so I want to be a naughty boy. What's the prankiest prank I can pull? I wanted to ask Luca for advice, but I can't find him anywhere. You ready, Notte? Let's get our prank on! *gasp* Are they pulling pranks too?! You know it! Where to, M-bell? How abouuuut...the kitchen! I just had a great idea. Big Fan of Sweets and Treats Maribelle Hey guys! Can I be part of your prank too? I'm trying to be a super naughty bad boy that does mega awesome pranks! Pleeeeeaaaase! ...Looks like the coast is clear. Perf. Now let's get to prankin'! So, what's the plan? We're gonna hide the food! Hee hee! But...won't that make trouble for whoever's cooking? Don't worry—we'll put it all back the way it was when they give us some treats! Less talking, more pranking! I'm gonna hide these peppers in that barrel over there. And I'll take these apples and put them in...this box! Now it's your turn, Lowen. Um, okay. I'll take these potatoes, aaand... Wait. What if they don't give us any treats? Will these potatoes just stay hidden forever? They'll go rotten then, and we would've wasted food... And then whoever grew them would be sad too, right? Plus, the potatoes probably want to be eaten. That's why they were born! Urgh... Why is being bad so hard? ...This is my mission, though. I'm sorry, potatoes. Lowen, if you don't toss those taters somewhere fast we're gonna get caught! Ack! Sorry! I'll hide them right now! Um, guys? It's a pretty tight squeeze in here... Is this really gonna work? Are you kidding? This cupboard is the perfect hiding spot! Right? Now all we have to do is pop out together like "TRICK OR TREEEEEAT!" Hee hee, I can't wait for someone to come by! (My chest feels weird... It hurts, kinda, but it also feels sorta...good? My heart is beating so fast...) Is this what the bad boy life feels like? Someone's coming! Crack the door a hair so we can see. Hm? Where has all the food gone? I know I laid it all out earlier... Halidom Butler Edward Hee hee! He's totally looking for it! (Oh no... Edward looks worried.) (Wait, this is good! I'm a bad boy; this is what I want!) (Still...) At this rate, there won't be enough food for the party. (Oh gosh, is that true?! What do I do...?) Okay, on the count of three. One, two— EDWARD I'M SO SORRY PLEASE FORGIVE ME! (WHAT?! Lowen, what are you doing?!) (Maribelle, chill! Don't give away our position; let's see how this plays out.) Why, if it isn't little Lowen. What am I forgiving you for, exactly? Ummm... Well... Hiding the food, perhaps? MUH?! As I suspected. Now, were I to hazard a guess, I'd say the peppers are in that barrel, the apples are in that box, and the potatoes are...here. Well, fancy that. I found them all. B-but... How did you know? Today is Halloween. If I didn't expect a certain amount of pranking at my expense, I'd hardly be fit to call myself a butler. Likewise, I made sure to hide something for potential pranksters, and prepared a convenient hiding spot too good to ignore. Wait, does that mean...? EYAAAAAAGH! THERE'S SOMETHING IN THERE! L-LOOK AT THOSE GLOWING EYES! LEMME OUTTA HERE! FAERIES AND CHILDREN FIRST! It would appear my prank was a success. YOUR prank?! Indeed. Pardon me a moment; I have something to collect. This is the source of those glowing eyes you saw. A spider toy? Quite so. Any pranksters seeking treats would have to hide themselves somewhere nearby, yes? I simply provided an inviting location, and placed this toy deep inside. Once someone is nearby for a certain duration, the eyes begin to glow. Are you telling me you basically predicted our whole prank? Major oof. Pranksters getting pranked is a baaad look... All in good fun. Perhaps these might make you feel better? Holy wow! These puddings look delish! It's a nice thick batch, with lots of pumpkin. A little something special for you three. Huh? You're not gonna bring any to the party? Correct. I prepared this pudding for any who found themselves caught in my web, as it were. Think of it as a "sorry for the scare" treat. You are the only three who get to enjoy it. Works for me! Wow... You played a prank, but you actually made your victims HAPPY. I find pranks on their own to be rather uninspired. If one desires to do some pranking, one must execute every detail to perfection— including restitution. Man... I hope I can be an awesome adult like you someday, Edward! *horf* *snarf* Wait, didn't you say you wanted to be a bad boy, Lowen? Oh yeah! I forgot!

Internal Conflict

*sigh* I've been trying all sorts of pranks, but nothing seems to be working. Maybe I'm just not cut out for the prankster life... But I can't let that get me down. I'm gonna be a bad boy, no matter what! Maybe I should try being naughty in ways that don't involve pranks? Hmmm... What does that mean, though? Treats, treats, treats, to eat, eat, eat! I've got treats for you Lowen! Choir Owner and Dragon Maritimus Oh, thanks, Mariti. Hrm? HRRRRRRM?! Um...is something wrong? You're staring pretty hard. Why so glum, chum? Huh? You look distraught, and I'd like you to be dis-NOT! Ha ha, okay, you caught me. I AM a little distraught. Mhmm. My many years watching over the choir children has given me something of a sixth sense when it comes to these things. Ah, right. I guess that makes sense. Did you ever have any...bad kids? I've been wondering what exactly makes a bad kid bad. Hrrrm... Bad kids, you say? All of my children are angels, though there HAVE been a few that liked to play hooky! It affects the whole choir when one or two voices are missing, so whenever someone skipped practice I'd have to give 'em the 'ol tsk-tsk! Skipping practice, huh... Hm, I wonder where Lowen is. We were supposed to do some training. Heh heh, who cares about training? It's hard, and it makes me sore! I'm only doing ONE thing today, and that's PLAYING! Are you sure you ought to be skipping practice? Ack! Why's there another me?! I'm Sweet Lowen, the part of you that's a good little boy. You know you won't grow up big and strong if you don't train, right? Yeah, you're not wrong. ...Wait, that's all it took to convince you? I thought you were supposed to be Bad-Boy Lowen! I am, but I can't argue with facts. The only reason I've gotten stronger is because I've been training. So it would be pretty silly to stop now, right? Well sure, but... Hold on, are you saying you don't want to be a bad boy anymore? Oh, butterscotch! Hey, do you know how I can be a bad boy? You're asking ME?! Clearly I'm desperate here! Come on, we'll work it out together. Well... What if we actually DID skip practice, like we're doing right now? But what about getting strong? Okaaay, how about we steal some food then? But then I'll be too full for dinner... What if we stay up super late? Then I'll oversleep tomorrow... Why does it feel like I'M the bad version of me right now?! Aha ha... Sorry, man. Rrgh. Fine. This is my last suggestion. If you made Louise cry, that would DEFINITELY— Are you nuts?! I could never be that mean! She's the most important person in the world to me. I would never make her sad on purpose! Yeah, me neither. You're giving up on the whole bad boy thing, then? You better get to practice, so you can get strong and protect Louise! Yeah! No More Naughtiness

Well, I'm stumped. I can't think of any other ways to be bad. What am I gonna do? If I can't figure this out, and Halloween ends... Maybe there's someone around who can teach me. ...Hm? Trick or treat, Odetta! My dear, you grow more beautiful with each passing day. I fear my heart has been caught in your spider's web. O, woe of woes! Would you deign to grace me with your choice of trick or treat? I've known many like you, Orion: Bad boys, ladies' men, wolves dressed as sheep. You all spout the same nonsense, and not just on Halloween. So I think I'll treat myself to a swift exit. Goodbye. Such elegant evasion... Hey, Orion! Ack! Ah, Lowen. Forgive me, you caught me in something of a daze. What can I do for you, so freshly-jilted as I am? Well, I was wondering... She called you a bad boy, right? Can you maybe teach me how to be one too? Pretty please! You wish to be a "bad boy"? Hah! Lowen, could it be...? ARE YOU IN LOVE?! Er, what? You wish to re-imagine yourself in hopes of attracting that special someone, no? H-how did you know?! It is a time-tested tactic, my dear boy. A little bad behavior goes a long way in the game of love. Sincerity alone will not suffice. No, one must add some SPICE to truly titillate the target of their affection! And when said person first spies your newly seasoned self, they will surely be knocked flat! You too can employ this method of attraction, thought it may prove difficult, pure-hearted as you are now. What?! Aw, dang... Worry not, my young apprentice! Difficult does not mean impossible. I shall teach you to wield all such weapons of passion! I...don't think I totally understand what you mean, but yes please! Now, our first lesson is on capturing the attentions of a lady. And look, a gorgeous woman approaches at this very moment! What's going on here? What are you teaching my Lowen?! Flirting? Seriously? Louise, don't blame Orion. I asked him to teach me how to be a bad boy. Huh? Whatever for? Er, well... See... I'M SO SORRY! You'd be sad if I became a bad boy, right Louise? I'm such a dummy... You're not a dummy, Lowen. You must have had a reason for wanting to be naughty, yes? Why don't you tell me what that is, and then we can see if I would be sad or not. Okay? O-okay. I, um...wanted to see... Go on. ...I wanted to see Garuda. It's already Halloween, and she's not back. So I thought if I were a bad boy, Garuda would rush back to scold me. But it's not working! Garuda would never break a promise to you. Then how come she's not here?! Unless... Yeah. I get it now. She probably got fed up, right? I just kept saying how much I wanted to see her, over and over and over. I was selfish. Lowen, you weren't— I was. I didn't think about what Garuda wanted, not one bit. I only cared about what I wanted, and that's what got carried on the wind. ...I've been a bad boy right from the start. That is absolutely not true, Lowen. You— It's okay, Louise. I'm done with all that bad boy stuff. I'm done being selfish. I don't want to disappoint Garuda any more than I already have. I'm sorry I made you worry. But I'm gonna do my best to enjoy what's left of Halloween! That boy... Where are you, Garuda? Lowen needs you. Is that thunder I hear? Great, now even the weather is going bad. Unless something changes soon, Halloween will be over before you return...

Being Selfish

Halloween is nearly over. I really wanted to spend it with Garuda... *gasp* Was that...?! No. Just the wind. Ack, and RAIN! This is becoming the worst Halloween ever... Lowen, hurry inside! You'll catch cold! With the weather as it is, we'll have to call off the party. It might stop! And Garuda might still make it back in time. I know how you feel, Lowen, but this isn't the kind of storm that passes in a blink. And even if it did, the ground would be all wet and muddy—hardly conditions for a party. Urgh! ...I guess...you're right. Halloween is over, then. Wait... Louise, look! What in the... The clouds are being blown away! And the ground is drying up! Could it really be...?! Forgive me, Lowen. I am quite late. G-Garuda?! What is it? You look as if you've seen a ghost. And why wouldn't we?! Do you have any idea what TIME it is?! Pray forgive my tardiness. In truth, I was a bit...lost. You mean you just got turned around? Not quite. Rather, I could not decide what manner of treat Lowen would like best. You... What? It is customary for Halloween participants to share treats with one another, yes? I have always been the recipient of gifts; it has been a long time indeed since I was the giver. And so I worried a great deal, flying this way and that, ultimately delaying my return until this moment. I am very sorry to have caused you undue worry, Lowen. Pray forgive me for— Of course I forgive you! Ah! S-sorry! And, um...sorry for everything else, too. Nonsense. You have nothing to apologize for. I kept you waiting, after all. But you were thinking about me the whole time... And I was just being selfish. I just kept thinking how I wanted to see you, and those feelings met you on the wind. He told me the same thing, Garuda. Lowen believes he's been a very bad boy. He says he upset you by thinking only of what he wanted, and not what you did. Poppycock. I was delighted to know how badly you missed me! That's why I was so intent to find the perfect treat for you. In the end, though, I only succeeded in causing you distress. I am truly sorry, Lowen. No, I'M— That's enough apologizing from you. In fact, I would prefer you be even MORE selfish. But...wouldn't that upset you? Not in the slightest. You deny yourself too much, Lowen. Agreed! You have to speak up when you want something. It's okay to be selfish sometimes—it doesn't always mean you're bothering someone! If you stay quiet, how will anyone know your true feelings? Precisely. Moreover, today is Halloween. Is this not a day for children to enjoy themselves? Are you saying it's okay for me to be selfish and play pranks and stuff? Yes. To make up for my tardiness, I shall weather all you can muster. I thought you said pranking people wasn't really your thing. Well, I still don't like doing pranks that cause people trouble. But Garuda said it was okay, and I figured it would make our Halloween together more fun... So maybe being a prankster is okay sometimes! ...! Er, guys? What's wrong? W-well...
