The Unrivaled Butler

Say, Euden? Do ya really believe it? If ya ask me, vampires comin' outta the forest at night sounds like a buncha hysterical nonsense. The villagers near the Halidom are scared, Ranzal. We can't ignore their concerns. Yeah, but vampires? I mean, c'mon. They don't even exist! It's all just some wild delusions cooked up for books and tall tales. I'm sure whatever villagers think they saw a vampire just mistook a musty old scarecrow in the moonlight. GRAAAAARGH! Did you hear that?! Sounds like a fiend. C'mon! H-hey, Euden! Check that out! Above the fiend, I mean! That coat with the tall standing collar... And the blade dripping with blood... Could that really be a vampire?! Stay back, Euden! I'll take care of this thing! I dunno if yer the stuff of myth or not, but I bet I can beat ya down just the same! Whatever are you talking about? Wait, what? Master Euden? Master Ranzal? What are the two of you doing here? I'd not thought you scheduled to come to the woods until later this evening. Edward?! Is that you? What the heck, guy?! Don't give us a shock like that. The villagers asked us to come here and exterminate a vampire that had appeared in the woods. Vampires, you say? The fiends of myth? They're here in the forest?! They were talkin' about YOU, dummy! They were talking...about me... I have a feeling they mistook you for a vampire, Edward. In any case, why were you out here in the forest so late at night? Er, and why are you dressed like...you are? I came to serve as a reinforcement for the night's watch. I fear our Halloween preparations have been delayed by the prolonged fiend assaults we've been enduring. I wanted to nip this particularly irksome issue in the bud so that it might no longer hinder your plans, master. ...Like so. GRAAAAARGH! I can't believe he saw that coming... Under cover of darkness, one must be ever more sensitive to potential threats. We ain't got time for a lesson; there's another flock of fiends comin' this way! Let them come! I'll not permit them to run roughshod around these lands. Our schedule has already been delayed enough as it is! My word, but they ARE persistent. They just keep coming! His strength is incredible... It's almost like he's an actual vampire! No kiddin'. No wonder all them village types thought he was some kinda mythological murder machine. Either way, you're incredible, Edward. You accomplish whatever you set your mind to, and you're so strong to boot. Heck, you're basically perfect! Hey, even vampires have flaws and junk, yeah? This old boy ain't no different. As a butler of utmost perfection, I assure you I have nothing remotely approaching a personal flaw. Aw, horsefeathers! Everybody's got a flaw or three. If you're so insistent, then perhaps you might enlighten me as to what mine are. Yeah, well... Uh... There must be a food you hate or...something? Sorry, but I'm not terribly picky. Okay then. What about a person you hate? There are none. Are ya scared'a ghosts, maybe? Is that the best you can come up with? Urrrrgh... Well? Do you see now that I possess no flaws or weaknesses of any kind? Well, it certainly seems like you might not have any fl— Wait! Hang on! I'm gonna figure out what yer flaw is, pal! I just need a minute! By all means, take all the time you need. But DO be certain to deal with all of your actual responsibilities, yes? Just you wait, pal! Ol' Ranzal's gonna have the last laugh on this for sure! Well, this got a bit weird. Still I wonder if Edward actually DOES have any flaws...?

Episode 2

The Invulnerable Butler

Are you sure this is a good idea, Ranzal? Sneaking around after one of our comrades just feels...wrong. Aw, it's fine. Ain't like we're followin' him around to jump him or blackmail him or somethin', yeah? Still, lurking around in silence behind him doesn't really sit well with me. Yeah, but if we don't do this, we'll never figure out what Edward's flaws are! Knowin' yer friends' weaknesses can help ya protect 'em better, right? Well maybe, but still... Right?! So let's make with the tailin' already! Let's see, the construction of the candy house is currently at about 70 percent completion, so... Ah, Madam Cleo? Yes? What is it? I've finished ordering the additional flour and sugar needed to complete the Sweet Retreat. The goods are scheduled for delivery tomorrow, so if you'd be so kind as to receive them, I would be grateful. Well, that's a help. We were just about to run out of those things. All of this is to ensure the smooth and prompt progress of our Halloween preparations. Cleo? Edward? I'm going on patrol. As I've already completed the north and east patrols, I'd be most grateful if you could take care of the others. Already?! You work so fast... Such is expected of a butler like myself. ...That sounds like Edward, all right. He always performs his duties admirably. Yeah, but what's he still doin' dressed in that crazy getup? Apparently it's so he's prepared in case fiends attack at some point. Yeah, or maybe he actually just likes it. I bet it awakened some primal urge what to run around in a costume and— Incorrect. This is no matter of play. What the—?! Edward?! H-how did you know we were here...? How could I not, with the very obvious way in which you two went about trying to shadow me? First of all, you weren't able to hide your tracks. Furthermore, you may have been trying to whisper, but your voices are echoing over hill and dale. Honestly, are your hearts even in this little endeavor of yours? Eeeeyargh! We're soooorry! And whyever are you fumbling about the place in an attempt to keep tabs on me? Well, uhh...we were just thinkin' it's gotta be hard to work when you're runnin' around in that unusual outfit, yeah? We were worried about ya! Ain't that right, Euden?! Muh?! You didn't say one word abou— Shhhh! We were supposed to have our stories straight! *sigh* Master Ranzal, would you be kind enough to desist in trying to indoctrinate Master Euden into your wily—and rather inane—ways? I wonder, perhaps, if you weren't tempting him into making an attempt at identifying any potential flaws of mine? Uhhhh, nope! Not at all! That wasn't what we were up to at all! Nooooo, sir. You truly are as simple to read as a bit of children's verse. You think it hard to work in this ＂unusual outfit＂? Very well. I will prove to the two of you just how unnecessary such concerns are. ...Okay, so now we're in the kitchen. Are you seriously about to start cooking something? I am. Let us prepare samples of the food for the Halloween celebration. Er, with you dressed like that? That collar and coat look like they'd really get in the way. Your concerns are needless. ...HAH! Whoa! Check those knife skills! Amazing! He's cutting those vegetables into spiderweb shapes! Ah, but I'm not through yet! Now he's hollowing out that pumpkin like it's nothing! And that ain't all—he's carvin' a design in the pumpkin AND makin' a buncha other grub! ...And voila. A spiderweb-themed salad, and a stew housed in a pumpkin vessel. ...Also, pumpkin pie. Do help yourselves. Well, all right... *chomp* Oh my gosh, Edward. This stuff's mind-blowingly delicious! The taste is great, and it looks even MORE incredible! I'm deeply grateful for your kind words. Now, does this help you to understand? My work and my dress have no bearing on one another. If necessary, I would execute my master's wishes to perfection even while clad in nothing at all. Incredible! Um, you can keep your clothes on. Still, you really are perfect, Edward. Maybe he doesn't have any flaws after all...

Episode 3

The Tireless Butler

We managed to get all the preparations for the Halloween party taken care of, thanks to Edward. I wonder if he's getting enough rest. Directing all the preparations AND taking out fiends has to be exhausting. Hmm? Oh, there he is now. ...And is that Althemia with him? Madam Althemia, how goes progress on the party tricks? Oh! Umm... Y-you mean like the fog, and...um...bats? Yes, your magical tricks. I trust there is no delay in your preparation? O-of course not! Obviously I'm done! You don't have to remind me. Splendid. Then I shall call on you again later to confirm things are ready. Y-yes, by all means. Hey there, Edward. You're really burning the midnight oil on the party prep. It seems to be coming together nicely. I know I'm looking forward to it. I appreciate your kind words, but I merely did what was required of me. Not at all. It's thanks to all your hard work that we've come this far and done so well. But you haven't taken a single break, have you? How about you give yourself today to relax a little? I must decline, master. I have no need of such things. Besides, I've quite the full schedule ahead of me. In that case, I'll take on some of it for you. Will you take a break then? I'm really worried about you overworking yourself. You needn't worry. Working in the service of one's master brings joy to a butler such as myself. Hmm... Okay then, what if I ORDERED you to take a load off? Does my master mean to say that he would bid me take a break? If that is what my master wishes, then I, as a faithful servant, could not go against it, however much I might wish to. In that case, I order you to relax! That's quite the undignified command. And yet... Oh, very well. I shall take a day of rest for myself. Just make sure to do lots of relaxing. It's your one day off, after all. I hope this will lead Edward to let loose a little bit and enjoy himself. Let's see... I'm done with the patrol of the castle perimeter, so next I need to... Whew! Doing his job is making me realize just how much work Edward gives himself. He can do all of this without even batting an eye. What a guy. Master Euden, it's time for lunch. Please come to the dining hall. Okay, will do. Thanks, Edward. I... Hey, wait a second! Why are you working?! Is something amiss, master? I ordered you to take the day off! Yes, you gave me a day off from work. As such, I've simply opted to spend my time doing whatsoever I please. Okay, now you're just searching for a loophole... Oh, dear. We've been standing here gabbing away, and now lunch is late. Please hurry to the dining hall now, Master Euden. Okay, okay! I'm going. But will you please take an actual break? PLEASE? Let's see, I've brought in the fresh-baked cookies and the Sweet Retreat, so next on the docket is... ...Hah! ...Yaah! ...Hrgaah! Um, Edward? What are you doing? I am practicing my sword swings, master. Yes, I can see that. But why are you doing it on your DAY OFF? You're supposed to be RELAXING. What are you talking about? I've plenty of time to myself today, yes? If I don't train now, when will I do so? Okay, yes, but... Look, this isn't what I meant at all! I had you take the day because I thought you would be worn out and tired. You worry for me overmuch, Master Euden. I know my own body well, and you've nothing to be worried about. Are you sure? I am. And what's more, being idle fills me with unease and ends up rather wearing me down. I am most at ease when I am working hard for you, master. I guess I can't argue with that if it's really how you feel... I am grateful for your consideration—and for your allowing me a day of rest, master. That is precisely why I wish to devote this precious time to the things I want to do. Well, if you're fine with things... Thank you for your understanding. ...Great heavens, look at the time! I must return to the castle and begin dinner. By your leave, master? I get that he's a hardworking guy, but is he really going to be all right?

The Bloodsucking Butler

Happy Halloween, everyone! Make sure to have lots of fun today! I'm pleased to see the party is proving even more successful than we anticipated. Yeah! I'm glad everyone's enjoying themselves. And thanks for all your help getting ready, Edward. Make sure you have some fun today as well, all right? You are most gracious, master. I believe I may take you up on that. Master Euden. Trick or treat? Er, what? As I said: Trick or treat? Now, if you won't be giving me a treat, that means you don't mind if I play a trick on you, correct? Okay, hang on! I'm pretty sure I've got something prepared for this! *snicker* Aha. Merely joking, master. ...Wait, what? But of course. There are limits as to how far a butler can go when playing practical jokes on his master. Oh wow, you really had me there. You looked so serious! Ah, but it was you who said you wanted me to enjoy myself, was it not? But for now, I shall keep the practical joking to a moderate level and go on patrol. I didn't think there were any signs of fiends around, though. Ah, but I am patrolling INSIDE the castle; we've taken special pains to invite a number of our neighbors to the party. It's not out of the realm of possibility that unsavory types could also weasel their way in amongst the guests. That's a good point. I'll go with you. Whatever do you mean? You are the host of this party, master. Leave such trifling details to me and focus instead on watching over the gathering as befits a good host. All right, then. I'll leave it to you. Very good, master. Have a happy Halloween. Bwa ha ha! ＂Happy Halloween...＂ What a heapin' pile'a nonsense! Oy, but it's thanks to all that hullabaloo that we're here in the first place. Now let's make with the stealin'! Grab everything what ain't nailed down and then we'll slip out undetected. My, my. It appears I was quite right to come keep an eye on things. What the...? Who's there?! Good evening, gentlemen! Did you get lost on the way to the privy, perchance? This is not the venue for the party. Jumpin' dragons! Ain't that the vampire what folks have been whisperin' about lately?! The one from the forest?! D-don't be an idiot! Look at those clothes! This guy's a castle butler, mark my words! What's the big idea, scarin' us like that?! Look here, Jeeves! We hate to interrupt while you're workin', but it's time for you to take a little nap! Do you truly believe I am but a simple butler? H-hey, what's goin' on?! Where'd all this fog come from?! Dammit! I can't see a thing! Aaagh! There's somethin' flyin' around! Was that a bat? Wait just a minute... Ya don't think that guy really is a vam— Gya! I got a cold feelin' on the back of my neck! OoooOOoOOooo... If you aim to steal from this castle, I shall have to take something of suitable value in exchange. Perhaps, for example...your blood? EEEEEEEEEEK! HE'S A VAMPIRE! HE'S A VAMPIIIIIIRE! Edward! Are you okay?! Ah, Master Euden. What are you doing here? The party should still be going on. I was worried about you. And when I came to check up on things, I heard shrieks. ...Um, Edward? Who are these people, and why are they unconscious on the floor? Hnnngh... Merely some thieves who sought to use the cover of the party to steal from the castle, master. Okay, but what did you DO to them? Just a little trick. It IS Halloween, after all. I gave them a little shock with the magical contrivances—fog and bats—whipped up by Madam Althemia. Combined with a touch of vampiric behavior on my part, and we have the sight you see before you. And the shock surprised them so much that they fainted? Quite so. As a result, I managed to bring about a resolution without any unnecessary fighting. Wow, you really know your stuff, Edward. They didn't steal a single thing, either. Protecting the castle is yet another of my duties as a butler...afteeer...aaaaalllll... Edward?! You look like you're about to fall over! Are you okay?! I... Yes. Please, do not trouble yourself. Just a light spell of dizziness. Nothing more. Now then! I shall dispose of these miscreants outside the castle grounds. Please return to the party, master. Now, if you will excuse me? I'm really worried about him...

Episode 5

The Grateful Butler

It's so quiet... Hard to believe that just a little while ago the place was bustling with a party. What a blast that Halloween was. ...Hmm? Ah, Master Euden. Out for a late-night stroll? I was having trouble falling asleep. Maybe I got overexcited from all the fun at the party. I just wanted to take it all in for a little bit longer. That's certainly not a problem, but please do be sure to get a proper evening's rest. If you end up oversleeping on account of this little jaunt, it would interfere with tomorrow's schedule, after all. Heh. All right. But what about you? I am conducting the night patrol. As we've already had one bunch of thieves creep into the castle, it would be best to remain vigilant with our patrols. Wait, you've been patrolling all this time?! Look, I'll take care of it from here. You go and get some sleep. I am quite all right. Please take your own rest, Master Euden. You need to account for your own sleep and time as we—Ah! Edward! ...See? I told you that you're exhausted. M-merely a brief dizzy spell... ...Edward? ...Edward! Stay with me! Ugh... Wh-where am I...? You're in my room. Master Euden?! Whatever happened...? You gave me a nasty scare, that's what. We were in the middle of talking when you suddenly collapsed. Very likely from overwork. Madam Cleo?! And me. I heard Euden shout and came running. And I brought ya to the closest room, which happened to be this one. Madam Elisanne... Master Ranzal... AHEM! C'mon, Edward! Who do you think brought that fruit and water from the kitchen? Even Master Luca went to such trouble? Ah, but I am truly sorry. You've nothing to be sorry for, Edward. WE'RE sorry for not being more attentive to your needs. Guess we just sorta ended up relyin' on ya for pretty much everything. Caring for those around you all the time builds fatigue. It's really no wonder this happened. So now you should rest and make up for all the hard work you did for us. Got it? Yes, but what about my work for tomorr— We got it. You just relax. I think it's about time for all of us to be getting back to our own rooms. You'll never be able to rest and recover if we continue making noise here. I'll look after him, so all of you should go and get some sleep. All right. Have a good night, Euden. You too, Edward. Master Euden... I'm truly sorry for this burden. Collapsing in front of my master is proof positive of my inability to care for myself. And that is in spite of my repeated boasts that I was quite all right. I truly am sorry. Really, don't worry about it. ...Although I think I've figured out your flaw. Ah. Is it hubris? It's that you don't know how to switch yourself off and rest. Wh-why that's simply... I... No. With things as they stand now, any explanation I may have will ring most hollow indeed. You're serious, dedicated, and responsible. You work so hard, which makes it easy to rely on and trust you. But I'd like you to be realistic and not push yourself past your limits when things are busy or hard. I want you to put yourself first from now on. Practice self-care. Ah, but I am a disappointing butler. And that is in spite of the concern you showed for me before. In the end, I ended up in this unsightly state, quite thoroughly useless to anyone. Everyone fails, Edward. What matters is what you do WHEN you fail. Don't you agree? The Edward I know isn't the type to keep making the same mistakes. Hmm... Yes, I suppose so. I shall not let you see this unsightly side of me again. I will do as you've requested and take a good and proper rest. Good. That will give me peace of mind. I'm still going to be relying on you moving forward, you know? Master Euden... Your words do me a great honor. Oh, but if you actually remember to rest every now and then, it means you won't have a flaw anymore. And yet I've had a weakness all along, sir. Have you? What is it? It is my one and only weak point, so I can't breathe a word of it to another soul. It might be good for me to know about it though, as a comrade. ...Actually, you know what? Don't worry about it. Whatever weaknesses you or I might have, we'll make up for them by sharing our strengths with one another. I would expect no less than this kind of thinking from you. ...My stars and garters! Look at the time! I apologize for commandeering your bed for the entire evening. It's fine. Keep it for the night. Are you certain, sir?
