Let the hammer of judgment fall heavy upon all who would oppose the Empire! Yes, sir! Face judgment, traitors! P-please, mercy! Gaaaaaah! Let this serve as a message to the world as to the fate that awaits any who would aid and abet sedition or treason. Let loose the fiends, men! Raze it all to the ground! Blimey, they've got fiends, too?! Someone, please! Help us! Nooooo! Do it now! ROAAAAAAR! What the hell was that?! The Windwyrm! No, the rebel prince! I KNEW it! Your rampage ends now. Ha! What rot is this?! If you persist in this injustice, I will strike you down myself! The hells take you! You're but one boy who won't live to regret his own idiocy! Hraaagh! Haaaah! Aaaarrrgh! You grow your strength for the people's sake, yet that same power causes them to shrink from you in mortal terror! Morsayati! Now do you understand the depths of human foolishness, heir of Alberius? What are you talking about? The ill will they show toward you is the true nature of man. They flee what they do not understand—they reject it. It was the same for your dear Alberius! He, too, was rejected by his people. That's enough! They will betray you someday, just as they did him. They WILL reject you. I eagerly await the opportunity to see what you do when that time comes. The Fate of the Strong

It's all your fault that my mom... I'm sorry. I had no choice. Shut up! I HATE YOU! ...... Graaargh! Damn it! Them Empire chumps brought a huge fiend with 'em! If we don't stop it right now, the village will be wiped out! Your Highness, wait! Don't run off by yourself! Grant me your power, dragon! Haaaaah! Graaaagh! It almost feels like the fiends are getting stronger lately... I wonder if this has to do with Morsayati being fully revived now? Graaaargh! Huh? Gaaaah! EEEK! Huh?! *sniffle* Damn! I didn't want the villagers to get caught up in this! Grraaargh! But we have to take this fiend out now! My mom suffered, and it's all your fault! You should never have come here! But I... The woman from earlier is conscious again, Euden! Hurry! What?! Mom! I'm so glad she's okay! But even so, that doesn't change the fact I put all of these people in danger... You look quite low, Your Highness. Yeah, keep that chin up! You're just out here doing the best you can, remember? I know, but even so... Boss? This is gonna sound harsh, but if ya let this kinda thing get to ya, ya ain't gonna be no good to anybody. This war's gettin' fiercer by the day, which means folks are gonna be hurt. There just ain't no way everyone walks outta this thing with a happy ending. Still, it's probably not good to have the people we're tryin' to protect angry at us. ...... You know, King Alberius himself once went through a similar experience. What happened? He fought off the Dyrenell Empire to protect a village. Sadly, the casualties from that battle were most severe. Had the king and his allies never come, the damage would have been lessened— or so went the line of reasoning among people who held him responsible. That seems REALLY unfair! What did Alberius do about it? He simply said, "This is the fate that awaits all who bear great power." That's it? Yes. And he didn't make any changes to his policies or plans. However... Yeah? However what? Let us just say His Majesty was not the type to display his pain openly. So he buried it inside himself instead? Yes. Alberius was stronger than I knew... (But I find that strength to be so very... lonely. Does that mean I'm weak?)

Episode 3

Fatherly Wisdom

I would ask a question of you, my son: What makes the ideal king? I'm not certain I understand. Should you pass the Dragon Choosing, you will gain the right of succession. As such, I would hear what you believe constitutes the ideal king. I... Are you unable to answer? N-no, I just... Well, I suppose that a ruler in the model of the Founder King Alberius would be ideal. It is true he was a great man who brought prosperity to this kingdom, as well as a just king. However, he also had a terrible flaw as a ruler. Do you know what this was? What his flaw was? I'm sorry, Father, but the tales of Alberius only ever speak about his greatness. I haven't ever really thought about him HAVING a flaw, to be honest. That is understandable. However, he most certainly did posses a flaw that must never be overlooked by other rulers... He was too strong. Can you BE too strong?! I mean, I've heard the incredible tales of his strength that have been passed down over the previous centuries, but I didn't ever hear about it being a PROBLEM. Can you explain what you mean? I am not surprised you do not understand. A day may someday come when you do... But perhaps it would be better if you never had to face such a moment. Father...? Hey! ...HEEEEY! What is your DEAL, man?! Huh?! Oh, sorry, Notte. What is it? "It" is that I've been over here trying to get your attention for roughly a week! Sorry. I was woolgathering, I guess. Yeah? What about? Some time back, my father said Alberius had the flaw of being too strong. What, like he accidentally punched holes in the wall or whatever? Heh. I didn't understand it at first, either. But you DO understand now? I think so. See, if you're too strong... ...... Dude, please don't make me finish your sentences for you. That's SO annoying. Yeah, sorry. Maybe I don't get it after all. I think I know what Father wanted me to understand about Alberius... Having too much strength isolates a person, and a king can't afford that. And yet, Alberius was facing the Other. He NEEDED that kind of strength. But I have much the same choice lying in wait for me. Can I even BE as strong as Alberius? And if I do, will I end up...? Help me, Father... What should I do?

The Strength to Endure

Well, great. I'm lost. I'm pretty sure I came that way while I avoided the imperial army, so— EEEEK! Who was that?! Grrrraagh! No! Papa! Run, sweetie! Go! B-but you— I'll be right behind you! Now go! Graaagh! Haaaaah! Are you okay?! Wh-who are you?! I heard screaming and came to see if I could help. Well, we're alive because of you. If there's anything we can do, please let us know. Well, I'm actually in a bit of trouble myself, so I'd be relieved if you could help me. Oh? So you got yourself lost, huh? Well, we'd be happy to take you as far as our village. If you follow the path from there, you can get where you're headed. That would be great, thank you. C'mon, let's go! This is our village! It's called Araba. (Araba? That's under the Empire's control. I'd better get out of here as soon as I can.) Ho, there you are! We were getting worried about the two of you! We were attacked by fiends and saved by this good soul here. Gracious! This village owes you a mighty debt, sir. I only did what anyone would. Er, and not to be rude, but I really need to be on my way. W-wait, sir! Merely showing you to this village is not enough to repay the debt we owe you! Look, that's REALLY not necess— At least let us prepare you a meal before you're on your way! Well, I suppose one meal wouldn't hurt... Hmm... I've seen that man before... And just then he came running in and took down the enemy with a single blow! I don't know if I'd go quite THAT far... The man you brought back to the village is the traitor prince! What?! But that's the most wanted man in the Empire! I hear he's been fomenting chaos and sedition everywhere he goes! He doesn't seem so bad to me. That's because you haven't seen him on the battlefield like I have. I watched him transform into a ferocious dragon and slaughter our comrades. He's not a man—he's a MONSTER! N-no... That can't be! If we don't report this to the Empire, they'll assume we support his treason. But that man saved my daughter's life, as well as my own! And yet, we don't have a choice. We must report this man. Chief! You're on board with this?! It would mean rebuke or worse for our village if the Empire discovered that we knowingly harbored him. But... (I thought there was something strange going on over here, but I never expected it would be THIS...) They will betray you someday, just as they did him. They WILL reject you. ...... (I have to sneak away from this place before things get out of hand.) Don't be stupid, Papa! Ah! How can you even SAY that?! What are you doing here?! That man saved you AND me! He's a good person! You know nothing, girl! That is no man at all, but a monster! Then he's a GOOD monster! I don't wanna hurt someone who helped us! I know, sweetie, but— Listen to me, all of you. Ah! He's here! Yes, but I'm leaving. Now. Once I'm gone, go immediately to the Imperial Army and tell them how you discovered me here. No! This is the only way. If you don't, your village will suffer for it. Go to them. Tell them I ran off after you stumbled upon me sneaking around. So we are to reward your kindness by setting the Empire on your trail?! That's exactly what you're going to do. Besides, I didn't help you in hopes of a reward—I did it because it was right. ...... There you are, traitor! Damn, it's the Imperial Army! I didn't leave fast enough! To think a village of the Dyrenell Empire would harbor a rebel like this! N-no! You've got it all wrong! Silence! I hereby name the villagers of Araba to be traitors to the Empire! Enough! They had nothing to do with this! It's me you want, so come and take me! Trying to protect your fellow rebels, eh? Put this village to the torch, men! Do not permit a single soul to live! I tried to be reasonable about this, but you've left me no choice! Dragon, grant me your power! Urk! Y-you...traitor... That ought to be the end of it. Are you people all right? ...... Y-yes, we're all right. Good. But if the Empire comes back, you all need to flee to the Halidom. Why are you still helping us? We just tried to sell you out! Some of you did so, yes. If we can defeat the Other—or even just land a strong blow—we can throw the troops into disarray. We've come too far to turn back now! Right. We'll strike hard at a single point and break straight through to the Other's command post! Yeah! Haaaaah! This ain't fair! For every baddie I feather, six more come and take their place! Move aside! Haaaaah! Don't try to take out every last man— focus on breaking their ranks! A sound strategy, but one that might prove impossible with this many foes. That's no excuse to give up! Now gather your strength and follow His Highness! This ain't good, boss—we're gonna start losin' folks before we can break through. Then I'll just have to clear a path! Everyone, form ranks behind me! I'm going to call the dragon! Forwaaaaard! *pant* *pant* F-finally! We made it! Morsayati! I would compliment your splendid efforts, dear brother, but perhaps you would do better to take a look around you? What are you scheming now? And where did everyone go?! Ah yes, you are completely alone now— and not unlike Alberius in that way. What?! Let me tell you the truth about the "legendary" battle he fought here. For despite what the brave stories say, Alberius did not intend to fight alone. But with his strength, you see, none could follow him. So no matter what battlefield he fought upon, he had no CHOICE but to carry on fighting alone. And with that...what will you do? Soldiers! Cut down this traitor! Die, villain! I...I won't be defeated! I'm not done yet! Haaaah! *pant* *pant* I...can still fight... How can he take on all of us at once? He can't be human! Tsk! Do you not realize that the more power you demonstrate, the more you leave your world behind? You are like me now. A being far above ordinary mortals. The mere idea of you fighting alongside them is nonsense. You seek to build a world that holds no place for you! It is a mad endeavor! So what if I am? What? I'm not fighting for someone else's sake— I'm fighting to protect the things that are most important to ME. I'm not looking for justice. I'm not even sure what I'm doing will bring peace. I'm doing this for me. It's...selfish. And the only reward will be an eternally crushing loneliness. But if isolation is the fate that awaits those with power, then I accept it! Now come, Zodiark! Aid me once more! You mustn't, Euden... That voice... It can't be! You must not repeat Alberius's mistake. You have your own path—one built on stronger bonds than even you know. What...? How can you possibly hope to succeed with this band of rabble forever holding you back?! This pathetic idea where you succeed at the side of your "friends" is naught but the basest of fantasies, and I will dispel you of it here and now!
