Dragon Story Episodes
No Mere Toy

"I want that dragon,"
the young princess said.

Her innocent eyes locked upon a
real dragon that looked identical
to her favorite stuffed toy.

The princess belonged to a royal
family that had inherited dragon-
blood—chosen ones who could
form pacts with their kind.

"Then form your pact," said the
knights who guarded her, parting
so she could step toward the dragon
and hold outstretched her little hand.

When a princess holds out her hand,
all kneel before her and offer it a kiss
of respect. This is—and has always
been—the way of the world.

But the dragon did not do so.
Instead, it let out a derisive laugh,
whirled around, and vanished into
the dark forest beyond.

For a princess born into a world
that she could shape according
to her whims, the act was an
earth-shattering shock.

Her knights panicked, but when they
turned to the princess to behold her
wrath, they saw a cheerful smile.

"How funny," was all she said.

From that day on, the princess began
climbing the steps to adulthood so
she might make the world dance in
the palm of her hand—and so she
might have that dragon for her own.

War. Politics. Interpersonal relations.
She mastered all manner of things,
and all were amazed at her growth.
Yet the dragon—the one thing she
truly cared about—paid her no mind.

The more coolly the dragon treated
her, the more she shone out—until
finally she had matured into a
brilliant gentlewoman in both
name and reality.

Everyone believed her wishes would
come true when she reached the top
of her climb. But what awaited her
was a far different scenario—and a
dazzling stage that much suited her...

The princess strove to improve herself
so the endearing, toy-like dragon
might agree to form a pact with her.
And in so doing, she matured into an
elegant young woman.

The first to acknowledge whom she
had become was not the dragon,
but her royal father, who granted
her an important post at a key
city within the kingdom.

"You will set off to Raywall
tomorrow," said the king.
"Once there, you are to form a
pact with a dragon with all haste."

That night, the princess set out alone
to the forest where her desired
dragon lived and said three words:

"I have lost."

"I have been ordered to form a pact
with a different dragon, and I will
grow old and wither away without
you ever acknowledging me."

The princess stepped toward the
dragon and extended her hand.
But she did not wait: She drew
her face in close and gave the
dragon a kiss. "Farewell."

Light shone forth from the spot
where her parting kiss landed.
And from this blinding light came
a pactstone—proof given form of
the pact that had been sealed.

"Finally," the dragon said as it
stretched. "I thought you'd never
acknowledge your own purrfectly
obvious weakness."

That day, the princess learned there
were things in the world she could
not change through displays of
strength and cunning alone.

(I HAVE become strong.
See? Like this...)

Several years later, in the Radiant
City, Chanzelia, the two looked back
on the moment they made their pact.

"You had meow quite fooled
that day, Lady Chelle."
"Fooled? What a disrespectful
thing to say."

"One must use all weapons at their
disposal to get what one wants.
...Even a weakness."

The powerful princess wore a relaxed
smile as her pact dragon and closest
partner, Cat Sìth, drew close to her...
