The Devoted Princess

The Empire is attacking! Everybody, run for the woods! Incinerate all who oppose the Empire! Sir, yes, sir! You will do no such thing! What?! I can forgive none who would dismantle the peace of innocents and put their homes to the torch! Now you will know an equal amount of pain and suffering by my hand! Haaaaah! Princess Fjorm, wait! Hot damn, that lady is JUICED! Still, it ain't the best idea in the world to go chasin' a pack of imperial soldiers all by yer lonesome. Especially when that enemy is a master of manipulating fire mana! We have to help her. Come on! Hurry, everyone! Yaaah! Gaaah! Tsk! You're stronger than you look; clearly we should have brought greater numbers. Fall back, men! Fall back! Phew... The village is unharmed. Princess Fjorm, are you all right? Quite so. I love yer brass, lady, but yer gonna give us ulcers if ya keep runnin' off like that. Upon consideration, I may have acted rashly. I apologize for being out of line. We are more than aware of your strength, Princess Fjorm. However, said strength will be better served by acting in concert with your allies, as opposed to wielding it alone. I am truly sorry. When I saw the village in danger, I fear the body simply acted without consulting the mind. Your concern for others is admirable. We'd just like you to show some concern for yourself as well. I understand.

I know that I will return to my home someday. But until that time comes, I would repay you for the kindness you have shown me. Let me fight at your side, Your Highness! Let me help the people of your land in their fight against the Empire! I refuse to stand by while the weak and defenseless suffer so! We would be honored to have you in our ranks, Fjorm. Don't yank the merchandise, Cleo! Luca and I are a race called sylvans. The long ears come standard for us. I had no idea. Pray forgive me for this terrible misunderstanding. We don't have such things in my world, so I never thought they might be real. When I mentioned it to Prince Alfonse, he suggested they might be some manner of spring festival costume. Hey, no worries. If I didn't know me, I'd be curious, too! I'm so ashamed—Oh! They moved! Yeah, they do that. It's so we can hear stuff that's far away and junk. Would you care to touch his ears? Er, no, thank you. Are you sure? They're ever so soft and fluffy and boofy. ...Boofy?! I'm fine if you wanna touch 'em, but you do you. Are you certain you don't mind? Nope! It's all good. Well, in that case... *pet* BY THE GODS! SUCH FLUFFINESS! Urk... They are so soft and warm... (Hee! Oh man, this tickles!) They truly are like real bunny ears. Pffft... AAAAH HA HA HA! S-STOP! SPARE MEEEEE! Oh dear. Perhaps he was offended when I said they were like actual bunny ears. I think you were just tickling him. Oh dear. What a mess. Still, they were SO soft... And you are also a sylvan, Cleo? Yes. Though my ears are covered, so you can't touch them. Er, no. That's not why I asked. Heya, Cleo! Did something happen? Luca just ran by me laughing like a crazy person. We attempted intra-world communication. It was something of a failure. You did who with the what now? Your wings are as beautiful as ever, Notte. Yeah, they ARE pretty great, huh? I take it you and Notte are already friends, Fjorm? Dang right! We're basically besties, even though I'm the first faerie she's ever seen. In my world, faeries are the stuff of folklore and cradle tales. To actually speak with one is like something out of a dream. Oh yeah, keep the praise coming, sister! Although I'm also SUPER stoked to be chatting it up with a princess who came here through a time portal or whatever. Hey, guys. Sorry about that! All that tickling sent me runnin'. Apologies if I overstepped. Aw, it ain't no thing. But if you're THAT curious about sylvans, you should come to our Vernal Banquet next year. What is a "Vernal Banquet"? All the sylvans on the continent gather together to celebrate the new spring. It's quite the lovely occasion. Plus, everybody brings a local delicacy, so you can stuff your face until your pants split! Sounds preeeetty great, right? If you swing by, I can introduce you to my little sister, Sarisse. Your little sister... Is something the matter? ...I'm sorry. I was merely reminded of my own sister just now. You have a sister, huh? Maybe she can pop through the ol' space hole and we can meet her someday! Oh, she's a curious one, all right. Wild horses couldn't keep her from this Vernal Banquet of yours. Then you TOTALLY gotta get her to come! Yes, it sounds like she would enjoy it. I'm grateful to you all. Alas, I know not how long I will be able to remain in your world. But if I am still here in the spring, I will certainly attend your festival.

Invasion of Flame

Torch it! Incinerate the rebels and everything they own! Stop right there! The entire village is in flames... You again?! When will you learn to mind your own business, traitor?! How can you be so cruel?! All who would oppose the great Dyrenell Empire must receive purification! This village refused us proper honors, so we set it to burn in a great cleansing! You would dare sully the name of "cleansing" by attaching it to such cowardly, wanton violence?! We are men of the Divine Torch, and this is the sacred duty conferred upon us! The Divine Torch?! Holy hell, yer them Empire guys what wander the countryside settin' fire to everybody's homes! You seek to give your actions purpose, yet you are naught but the most base and cruel of brigands—and I will see you pay for your deeds! Yaaaaaah! As if the Divine Torch could be felled by such a haphazard assault! To arms, men! Slay them all! I'll never forgive you! Haaaah! Fjorm, stop! ...Dammit! We gotta go after her, Euden. Yeah, she'll never be able to take on that many enemies by herself. Burn everything! Let not even a mouse escape! Gah, the flames! I can't...reach them! Fjorm, we have to withdraw! But... The fire is too big for us to put out! We have to prioritize getting the villagers out of here! ...I understand. Ranzal! Elisanne! Round up everyone you can find and get them to safety! Don't worry—we'll get 'em all outta here! Please take care of Princess Fjorm, Your Highness! All right, Fjorm. We're going to— Oh no! Wait, stop! Where are you going?!

Permanent Burns

How is your burn, Princess? All better now, thanks to Cleo. Great! Now ya just gotta scarf down tons of healthy grub, and ya'll be back to normal in no time flat. Speaking of which, how about an apple? I've got some real juicy ones here. I am grateful for all of your concern. Fjorm? A moment? Yes? What is it? The other day, you went up against the Divine Torch on your own. After that, you put yourself in harm's way in order to protect a child. And while any of us would have done the same, you did so in a terribly reckless fashion. There's something burning inside you that makes you forget basic tactics and common sense while on the battlefield. What is it? What's going on? Well... You don't have to talk to me if you don't want to, but I'm always ready to listen. No, it's all right. I made trouble for you, and owe you an explanation. My home kingdom of Nifl was devastated by the nation of Múspell. They bathed our kingdom of ice in a wall of flame, leaving nothing in their wake but destruction. The queen—my mother—fought valiantly against them, but eventually succumbed to the forces of flame. She was killed right before my eyes. That's terrible. Yeah, I'm real sorry. So when you saw the awful things the Divine Torch was doing... I snapped. That village became my own, and I could no longer see reason. I hate them with every fiber of my being, and everything just went...red. Hell, if I saw a buncha folks burnin' a village right after mine went up in flames, I'd probably lose it too. But is hate the only cause? I... If it was mere hate that drove you to fight, you wouldn't have thought to save a child. There must be some other reason. Can you tell us what it is? ...You're right. There is something else. Something even stronger than hate has my heart twisted about itself. It is...shame. Shame at my powerlessness, and the fact I could do nothing but run as my home and people burned. And you're trying to shed that sense of powerlessness by putting yourself in danger for the sake of others? When I'm working to help someone else, it makes me feel...essential. But you— Pardon me for the intrusion, but there is a woman who came here hoping to speak with you, Euden.

Is my son here? Who is your son? You saved him the other day, Lady Fjorm. Why do you ask? Did something happen? I haven't seen him since this morning. I know he was quite worried about Lady Fjorm, so I thought he might be here. I'm sorry, but he's not. Oh no... He must have gone for the herbs! Oh, whatever am I to do?! Tell us what you know. A medicinal herb used in the treatment of burns grows in the bog near our village. That bog's just a stone's throw away. Is he really not back yet? Though close, the bog has some dangerously deep spots, and if one goes far enough into the area, there are even fiend nests! That ain't no place for a kid! This is my fault. I must go after him! Wait, Fjorm! Don't run off alone! ...I can't believe she did it again. Does she see herself in the child? We can't let her do this on her own. I know. Come on, everyone! After her!

Little one! Where are you?! Fjorm, you HAVE to stop running off! We're happy to help you look for the child if you'll just wait for five seconds. The child ran into this bog because of me. It is my duty to find him! Blaming yourself for this situation isn't going to solve anything. Furthermore, it's only BECAUSE of you that he's alive to begin with. And yet, if I were stronger, I wouldn't have taken an injury and we would not be in this situation now. That's absurd. If anything, your great strength ALLOWS you to be reckless. I don't understand. You take risks another person wouldn't because your strength allows it to all work out in the end. And when the boy saw that, he may have thought the same. Have I truly set him on such a path...? Don't be hard on yourself—it's a lesson I've had to learn myself countless times. Heck, I STILL do it. I see someone I care about in trouble, and think that if I can just save them, it makes any personal sacrifice acceptable no matter the cost. But you lead the Halidom! If you fall, your nascent kingdom falls with you! Oh, I know. It's a trait I can easily see in others, but one I have a hard time recognizing in myself. But what I've learned is this: Instead of SACRIFICING yourself to help someone, it's better to lean on your allies and help the person together. Do you understand? I had not thought of it in quite that way before... So don't run off every time you see a problem to be solved. Instead, lend your strength to us and we'll solve it together. That is...a very good point. It would seem I have been less of a savior, and more of a stubborn fool. Right then. Let us go find the boy. I know we can do it if we work together! Isn't that right...Mother?

Grrrrr... Eek! S-stay back! Gaaaah! ...Huh? Just in the nick of time. Are you well, child? Hey! What are you doing here, ma'am?! Your mother was very worried because you came to this dangerous place all alone, so I came to look for you. Um, but I... I know why you came here. I know it was because of me. But you mustn't worry your mother and everyone like that ever again. I'm sorry! I just wanted to make up for you getting hurt! I thought I could make it all better if I found the herbs... I knew it was dangerous but... Urgh. I'm sorry. I'm happy you felt that way. Thank you. But even so, it makes us all sad when we think of the danger you put yourself in. Your life is precious, and you must treat it as such. I will, ma'am. I promise! And I promise not to do anything that makes you worry ever again.

Victory, Together

The Empire's activity is becoming more intense by the day. The Divine Torch in particular is quite the thorn in our side; if they have their way, every village and town in the area will be reduced to ash. But given their mastery of fire mana, it is too dangerous to take them on directly. Perhaps you would be willing to entrust this task to me? Why, ya got some bright idea what we don't know about? I do indeed: We will use me as bait to entice the Divine Torch. No. That's much too dangerous. Please, just listen to my plan...

We'll reach our next target before long. They'll know the true extent of our power! We will purify with glorious flame all who dare stand in our path! You will do nothing of the sort! This time, you and your flames will end by my hand! You would take us on alone? Such bravery is praiseworthy! Very well! We shall use your burning corpse as a bonfire to light the way into our next glorious conflict! Alone or no, I WILL stop you. Yaaah! I almost admire her recklessness... Now go, men! Set her to burn!

Urk... I can't...fall here... It seems you are not the warrior I thought, for you attack with naught but the basest of sentimentality! Don't let her escape! Strike her down! Hah! *pant* *pant* Clever girl... You thought to lure us to a location with a great deal of water so as to keep our fires in check, eh? Alas for you, for it will take more than water to quench the power of OUR flame! ...... What's wrong, out of options? You might want to look down. Look...down? WAAAAH! We're sinking! But why are only WE sinking?! How do you continue to stand there?!

...We will lure the enemy to the bog and trap them there. Why the bog? I learned something from the boy who went to get herbs for me. A number of locations in that bog are much deeper than they appear. Like quicksand! Or, uh, a sinky pit? ...Yeah, I dunno whatcha call it, but it's a damn good idea. The adults from the village know the bog like the back of their hand, and can tell us which areas to avoid. Which means we can move in safely. The Divine Torch has bested me once; let us use that confidence against them!

Prince Euden! Now! Come on, everyone! You dastards torched the villages, the woods, and everything in between, and now you're gonna pay! Strike back, you damned fools! Burn them to ash! W-we can't! We're stuck fast, and so are our weapons! Gaaaah! N-no! This cannot be happening! We are the Divine Torch! We... Noooo! Looks like the Divine Torch has been... snuffed out. OOOOOH YEAAAAAH! Your plan was perfect, Fjorm! They bought it hook, line, and sinker. Now the villagers who fled will be able to return to their homes. This is all because you heard my idea and helped me execute it to perfection. Today's victory belongs to you, Princess. I am happy to have played even a small part, and will think back fondly on this day when I return to my own world. It's a day all of us will remember. Just as we'll remember Princess Fjorm, our steadfast ally and friend. I'm truly glad I was able to meet you all.
