The Life of Simon the Lost

After defeating Barbary in a race to claim a treasure, Erasmus the dragon and Simon the adventurer returned to the island where they first met and resolved to protect their find.

Simon hid the treasure deep within the ruins where Erasmus lived and surrounded it with all manner of traps to ensure that it would be safe if Barbary should ever come for it.

Simon's days as a treasure-hunting adventurer were over- now he would spend his days defending a treasure instead. It was a life familiar to Erasmus, but one new to Simon.

"Are you not bored?" Erasmus asked. Simon responded with a carefree smile. "Every day here is an adventure- I risk my life just returning from the shore to these ruins!"

Simon always did have a terrible sense of direction. But rather than bemoan that fact, he enjoyed making it a part of his adventures. Such was simply his nature.

But one day, even carefree Simon came home with an expression that suggested he had gazed upon the end of the world itself.

"Are you well, Simon?" asked Erasmus. "You look under the weather." "Dear Erasmus," stammered Simon, "I'm afraid I've...fallen in love."

Simon had lived a life of adventure, adventure, and more adventure, but had never known love before. Lost in this new emotion, he had no idea how to approach his beloved.

"What should I do?" he pleaded to Erasmus. "Help me! Light the way!" "How do I do that?" asked Erasmus. "However you can!" Simon answered. "For my future is as dark as night."

Simon had found himself suddenly lost upon the winding road of life. Could Erasmus truly illuminate the path to a happy future...?

Erasmus and Simon spent their days protecting a treasure on an island. One day, Simon fell head over heels in love, but had no idea how to speak to the object of his affection.

"Help me, Erasmus," Simon pleaded. "Light the way for me, for my future is as dark as the night itself." "If I must," said the dragon. "But I do not know how much help I will be."

As the guardian dragon of sailors, Erasmus would not turn his back on those who were lost. That said, the dragon knew nothing of human love.

Figuring that humans knew humans best, Erasmus set about interviewing people about the secrets of love and relationships, and eventually arrived at a single conclusion.

"You must 'take your shot'," he said. "Tell the girl you like her, and if she seems interested, you are 'golden'. If not, you should 'drop her like a hot potato' and move on."

If it is not clear, Erasmus had not asked the most refined of people for advice. Instead, he'd sought counsel from the rowdy groups of sailors he rescued at sea.

It was a rather direct strategy- especially for one untrained in the ways of love- but Simon trusted Erasmus completely and immediately put the advice into motion.

Somehow, it worked.

For it turns out the woman had long been harboring a crush on Simon as well.

The woman was a traveler, and if he'd dawdled, she'd have left- so the advice had served him well. "Thanks, Erasmus!" Simon beamed. "I couldn't ask for a better friend!"

Simon and the woman fell in love and ultimately married. They were blessed with many healthy children, and suddenly Erasmus's island was a far noisier place.

Fifty years passed. It was but a moment in the world of a dragon, but a lifetime to a human.

Simon, the adventurer who had run through fields and scaled mountains in search of treasure, was now an old man who could barely walk.

Cut from their father's cloth, Simon's children had become adventurers themselves. They'd left the island, each dreaming of finding a great treasure just as their father did.

His wife had already passed. But as he gazed out at the sunset, Simon smiled and said, "I'll never be lonely so long as you are here, Erasmus. So...thank you."

"Throughout my life, I was always getting lost. I threw myself into one stormy sea after another, but you were always there to carry me over the violent waves."

Those would be the last words of Simon the adventurer. After the sun set and night's blanket fell, Erasmus blew a puff of flame to illuminate the face of his strangely silent friend.

The expression on Simon's face was one of satisfaction. "I see," Erasmus murmured. "It seems I was the beacon that guided your life."

Erasmus gave Simon's body a proper burial and returned to the ruins alone. There, he would protect the treasure- and his memories of Simon- until the end of days.
