The Mad Dog Appears

You mean to the castle? That's right. I won't let you get away, Cruor Hounds... Hey, Euden! You seen ol' Big and Beefy around? You mean Ranzal? Not since this morning. Is everything all right? He's still not back from patrol. I'm thinking somethin' might'a happened. Hmm. Okay, let's go take a look at his patrol route. I'm right behind ya. Guh... Still kickin' after that lickin', huh? Not bad. Heh. Thanks, but I'm not really lookin' for praise from the fella what jumped me outta nowhere. Ha ha! Fair enough. Guess we better finish you off then. Ranzal! Who are you people?! Regal-lookin' blonde... I reckon that's our prey. Pretty nice of ya to come face us yourself. Watch yourself, boss. This guy's got the bite to match his bark. They call him the Mad Dog. Mad dog...? In the flesh. Name's Durant—the Mad Dog of Valkaheim. I lead a resistance group based outta Valkaheim itself. We call ourselves the Cruor Hounds. If you're from Valkaheim, what are you doing here? I'm here to recruit you, of course. Oh, sure. You want his castle, too? Free with every purchase! Wise guy, huh? Hey boys—take care'a this runt. Whoa! Hold on! If you're gonna sass me, we're gonna bash you! They really can't take a joke! This could be bad. This is no place for us to be fighting! There he is! The Mad Dog! It seems we were right to make chase. Wait a second... Is that the traitorous prince?! Imperials?! You're just a bundle'a bad news, huh? Tch. And we were just gettin' to the good stuff. Sort them out, gang! We'll have both of your lives here! Haaaah! You stay put, blondie. These guys are OUR prey! Huh? Show 'em your fangs, Hounds! And no dyin'! Hraaaagh! Jeez, they're pretty impressive... Yeah. It's not so much their individual strength, but how effectively they work together. What'd ya expect from a bunch what set up shop in Valkaheim? The strong eat the weak in that city; even the Empire's threatened by 'em. You cocky little snot... DIIIE! Hrk! I'm toast! Outta my way! Ngh... Boss?! What're you— Oi! You think you can nip at the Mad Dog without getting bitten yourself?! Eek! They're too strong! Retreat, retreeeeat! They're gone. How's Durant? ...Ngh. Boss, why the heck did ya take that hit for me?! You idiot, I wasn't takin' a hit for you. You were bein' slow, so I knocked ya out of my way. But whatever. We live to fight another day. Now we just gotta deal with YOU runts. C'mon, boss, you can't go fightin' with that wound... Yeah, about that—what're we gonna do? Closest town's a way's off, but the boss might not have that long... Guess we've only got one choice then. Please, Euden—help our boss out! I'm beggin' ya! Oh, NOW ya got manners? I know how this makes us look, but... Please. If you save our boss, my life is yours! The hell?! Who said you could go tradin' your life away?! I'll show ya who's—urk! Boss, ya gotta lie still for now. What're we gonna do, Euden? We can't leave him like this. As if he'd say anything else. All right, bozos, pick up yer boss and follow me. Thank you, really. You two are gonna pay for this... As long as it means you get to live, we'll take whatever you can throw. Heh. Idiot. I'll make you regret...that... Nn... ...Is Durant all right? Time will tell, I guess. Is it really such a good idea though, bringin' the Mad Dog into the Halidom? Not sure he's really, er...house-trained. We can't send him away while he's injured—especially when he saved us from those imperials. *sigh* Yeah, yeah. Fine. I'm not gonna let him off for sluggin' me though. But I guess as long as he's here, I can get him back whenever I want. Heh! The Mad Dog of Valkaheim... Who knows where things are headed next.

Episode 2

Being the Boss

*sigh* Honestly... You look exhausted. Is it Durant? Indeed. Whenever I try to heal him, he flies into a fury and refuses. I can see why they call him "Mad Dog." Heh. He's certainly a handful. I have not been struggling alone, however. Hm? Oh, you're Durant's men. We can't thank you enough for helpin' out the boss—and us too, of course. It's nothing. I never could've left him like that. I was impressed by you two, by the way. You didn't even hesitate to protect your leader with your lives. Not many people could do that. Yeah, well, we owe him our lives. You mean because he risked his own to save you the other day? Sure—but that wasn't the first time. Without Durant, we'd be dead in some alley in Valkaheim. I've heard that city is a cold meritocracy. Man, you've got no idea. We were livin' like garbage back then, until Durant found us and gave us the strength that comes from pack life. Doesn't matter where ya come from, or how strong ya are—together, you're always stronger! Keep lettin' this town smack ya around, and you're just gonna be helpless mutts forever! He brought you together, huh? I suppose his coarseness is a product of surviving in Valkaheim. Yeah. Pretty words don't mean nothin' there. He's not all bad, though. He took in a stray puppy and raised it, for one. Took a couple'a days, but we eventually realized it was really a wolf pup. Definitely ate like one... I struggle to picture him nursing anything but a sore jaw. Eh, that's just Durant. But lemme tell ya, there's no one we respect more! I believe it. And I hope he can open his heart to us one day too. Oh, I suspect we won't be waiting long. You have your own knack for winning others over. But in order to see that happen, he must first allow me to treat his wounds. A few days later... Durant! Where are you going?! Your wounds have yet to heal! Hey, you should really listen to Cleo. Shut up and get lost. ...... Why are you two just standing there?! Stop him, for goodness sake! No can do. We know what this means to him. Do you know where he's going? He's got a job only he can do. Huh...? Later that night... ...Dammit. That sounded like Durant. So, you're back... Wait, are those wounds?! What happened?! What do you care? Not like we're friends. Maybe not, but I think anyone would be worried seeing you like this. Keep your concerns to yourself. What's your deal, anyway? You just let anyone off the street into your castle? Well, er... Little slow in the head, huh? Good luck rulin' a kingdom. I make judgments when I have to. Yeah? Let's test that. Say your most trusted pal betrays you. If you don't put him down, the rest of the pack'll be in danger. But then, you have so many memories together... Good times, bad times; any time ya can think of, you've had it with this guy. What would you do? Take their life? Could ya even DO that? I... Me? I'd kill 'em right there. For the sake of the pack. That's my job as the boss. Your job... Wait, did you go out today to— Lemme make somethin' crystal clear. You're lackin' as a leader, blondie. You've got ideals and pretty words, but do ya have the raw GRIT it takes to make your dreams happen?! Crawlin' though garbage, lying, stealing... Doin' whatever it takes to survive. And then when the time comes, pullin' yourself up outta the muck to move up the food chain. That's how this world is. Unless ya get your hands dirty, you won't change a damn thing in this kingdom. But it's not all bad. One thing you do have is strength, and I can put that to good use. So go on, bend the ol' knee and swear allegiance to me. No. Whaddya mean, "no"? I'm askin' ya nicely, blondie—don't go coppin' an attitude. Say whatever you want—but I'm going to govern this land my way. The idea of my allies betraying me is something I'd rather not think about... But if that time does come, I'll be sure to make a proper decision. A good, even decision that I won't regret. I'm going back to my room. You should think about doing the same. Good night. ...The hell's with that guy? Every time he opens his damn mouth, nothin' but pretty words fall out! Makes me SICK! The only way to get what you want is by gettin' down and dirty. You can't keep clean and expect to make anything happen. The world doesn't work like that! ...Right? I mean, if it did, what would that mean for me, covered in the blood of my comrades...?

The Boss's Keen Eye

Durant, your wounds are not yet healed! Please, just take your medi— Shut up. I don't take orders from you. How are you liking life here? Eh, it ain't bad. Once you swear to join me, I wouldn't mind movin' HQ out here. I thought I made my answer quite clear. Oh, you did. But why else would I be stickin' around? Ya better not be thinkin' we're pals or somethin'. Have you no respect?! It's fine, Elly. I think this is just Durant being Durant. The hell's that supposed to mean?! Talkin' like you know me and junk... I've met a lotta punks in my life, but NOBODY has ticked me off the way you do. I bring a report, Your Majesty. What is it? A man is at the gate saying he wishes to join your cause. I see. Okay, I'll meet with him. Understood. I will bring him here. New blood, huh? This should be interesting. I'll tag along as well. Wanna see how good ya really are at judgin' character. By all means. I have brought the visitor, Your Majesty. My name is Dan, and it's truly a pleasure to meet you. Hello, Dan. I'm told you'd like to join us? That's right. My village was destroyed by the Empire overnight. They are a blight on this land, and I'm tired of feeling powerless to stop them! So when I heard what you've been doing here, I was convinced joining you would help me make a difference. I'm an accomplished martial artist; I have no doubt I can be of use. So, please: Will you let me join your cause? Of course. Welcome to the fold, Dan. Oh, thank you! I will make myself useful, I swear it. I shall prepare a room for you. This way, please. What did you think, Durant? ...You're an idiot. What could you possibly tell about a guy from a conversation like that? He didn't tell you squat. Hmm... Think about it this way: How do you know he's not an assassin? If he is, your comrades could be in danger now too. ...I see what you're saying. On the other hand, though, I wouldn't feel right defaulting to doubt anytime I meet someone new. I wanted to believe in him. If he ends up betraying me, I'll deal with that pain when it happens. Everyone in the Halidom trusts His Majesty's judgment. When we are hurt, we are hurt together. You all love to talk pretty, huh? What a load of rubbish. Don't blame me if you end up dead in a ditch somewhere. I appreciate your concern, Durant. The hell? Why would I be concerned?! Because we're comrades. Oh yeah? You ready to fall in line then? I'm not talking about one of us working for the other—I'm talking about the connection we share. THERE'S NO CONNECTION, DAMMIT! If you're not in my pack, you're no comrade of mine. I'm outta here. Goodness... He certainly knows how to bark, that one. Yeah, but he's not a bad guy. He'll come around. That night... So you're Dan now, are ya? You... I see you're still doin' the wet work. ...You mangy dog. Musta been some real tasty grub here to get you to heel, eh? You'd know. Now cut the crap—you're here to kill prince, ain't ya? Empire put ya up to it? Maybe. If the pay's right, I'll kill anyone. Even you, if you get in my way. Heh. I don't stick my neck out for strangers. Oh? Prince not "pack material" then? A Beast's Dreams

Uh, boss? You sure ya don't wanna clue the prince in on Dan? Yup. If he dies, he dies. And if he does, then WE can roll in and claim this castle. Er, okay, but... What, you boys goin' soft on me? Wanna join his pack instead? Hell no! But we owe him for savin' y— Urk! Keep it up, and it won't just be a punch next time. Nobody betrays the pack—and my word is law. The prince is gonna die, and he's got his own pretty words to thank. Later that night... Sir? It's Dan. Please forgive the intrusion, but there's something I wanted to talk to you about. Sure, come in. There's actually something I want to talk to you about as well. Huh...? Wait—why are the lady knight and that soldier here?! They thought you might come by. To kill me, that is. What?! A number of my allies came forward with information about you. They said they'd seen you with an assassin's guild—and told me about your family. I... This castle is home to several former assassins, and each one is a cherished comrade of mine. I'm not a perfect leader, nor am I the strongest person here. But I do believe in people, and that's why I have so many allies. Each one brings their own unique talents, and together we're stronger. For their sake, I can't let you take my life. Drop your weapons now. Tch... Thank you. Now, let's talk. Wha? Talk? Tell me about yourself, Dan. ...It appears that went well. Yup. I'm sure the rest'll go well too. Tch. Pretty words and platitudes. What an idiot. You say that, but you're here to check up on him, aren't ya? If he finds himself in trouble, will you enter the fray? Shut the hell up! You don't get me at all. The prince has a knack for winning folks over—but you just won't budge, will ya Durant? I suppose you are the "Mad Dog" at the end of the day. And yet, are the two of you not headed down similar paths? (He ain't my comrade—and I got no plans to protect him.) (...But I AM curious to see where all those pretty words get him. Episode 5

Way of the Beast

WHAT?! Ya let Dan go?! The guy was plannin' to KILL you! The hell are you playin' at?! The Empire DID attack his village. They needed money to rebuild, so Dan was forced to take work from the same villains that leveled his home. And of course, there's no bounty bigger than mine, so I was the natural target. Get to the point. I sent him back to his village with some money. The rest falls to him. You—?! *sigh* I don't get you, man. What're you gonna do if everything he told ya was garbage? I've chosen to trust him. I'm not going to dwell on what-ifs. You are the BIGGEST moron. If you want to keep your tongue, you would mind how you speak to His Majesty. Heh. You get how this all works, right? This guy has one lapse in judgment— just ONE—and that's it. He's dead, you're dead, everybody's dead. Thing's mighta worked out this time, but sooner or later someone's gonna come knockin' who ain't interested in words. And judgin' by how the world's lookin', things are only gonna get worse from here. Will you still follow this guy, knowin' all that? Of course. And not just me—everyone in the Halidom is determined to press on with His Majesty, come what may. Hmph. Fools, every last one of ya... Thanks for worrying about me, Durant. And I agree—the way I do things might not always be the most pragmatic. There's always a chance I could make a mistake. But if I didn't stick to my ideals, there would be no point in working so hard for my dream. Join us, Durant. We will bear any mistakes along the way together. Join you idiots? No chance. We're leaving. Huh? What do you mean? We're going home to Valkaheim. Me and you just don't mix, blondie. ...I see. I really hoped we could be allies. I know we have different paths, but the destinations are the same, right? Hmph. We'll see. Prove you can make your dream happen without stoopin' to my level.
