But despite graciously offering to deliver presents to the peasants on this most auspicious occasion, there is a dearth of said gifts! How am I supposed to spread the blessings of Dragonyule now, I ask you?! Actually, I think there's more to being Saint Starfall than delivering presents. Pish-posh! No, I'm serious. For example, you could look for people in need and offer them a helping hand. That's something Saint Starfall would do. Hmm. I suppose it IS a king's duty to provide charity to the various rabble. My thanks, Euden! I shall set forth and aid this castle's inhabitants with all speed! Hmm. What to cook tonig— Lay down your ladle and mop your clammy brow, laborer! What did you just call me? ...Also, what is all that food? Why, this is my feast, of course! I know you to be a rather busy individual, so I did you the honor of cooking tonight. You...did? Ha HA! Allay your suspicions, good woman. If you are concerned about how it tastes, you merely need to try some yourself. Well, if you insist... *munch* Oh my goodness. This is incredible. Of course! When your regent is involved, nothing less than the best will do. Think of it as a gift from the gallant Saint Starfall himself. I pray you and all my other vassals take great succor from it. This is certainly an unexpected kindness. But if I may ask, where exactly did all of this food come from? Where else but our larder? I used all that we had. ALL of it?! Indeed—and now everyone can hear my clomping approach from miles away. *sigh* I'm sorry, Elly. I think this is all because of what I said to him. You have no need to apologize, Your Highness. Indeed, I rather admire the fact that he is trying to bring happiness to others, even if he is somewhat...bad at it. Xander just needs to be a little more considerate in how he goes about it. Ah! Well, we should start by finding some poor serf in need and hearing what they have to say. That sounds like a plan, I suppose. ...Hmm? Who's that? *sigh* Ah! That lad has the dejected expression of one who cries out for Saint Starfall's blessed salvation! Never fear, child, for I am here! Who are you, mister? Who am I? Why, I am none other than the reverent king himself, Saint Starfall! ...Also your most sacred monarch, Xander. Wow, you're a lot of stuff! This is the way of it when one stands astride the world. Now speak, for the worries of a ruler's people are his own. Umm... I don't blame you for being bewildered, but he's serious about trying to help. Is there anything you need? Um, well, my dad won't celebrate Dragonyule with me. He doesn't have time 'cause he's always trying to sell candles this time of year. Then it falls to me to show him the error of his grievous ways! You'd really do that, mister?! Of course—for I am a man of his word. Euden, to me! Xander, wait! We don't even know where his father IS! Candles! Get'cher fresh hot candles here! Fine Dragonyule caaaandles for sale! Blimey! Been here all day, and not a copper in me pocket to show for it. What am I gonna do? You there! Chandler! I can see by your countenance that you are the father of the young lad I encountered earlier. Cor! Who're you?! Why, none other than the kingliest of kings! I am Saint Starfall—AND I am Xander! Don't rightly follow none'a that. We came after speaking with your son. He said you weren't able to go home for the holiday until you sold all your candles. Aye, that's the way of it. If I don't sell me candles, I gots no money what to ring in the new year with. But folks won't even give 'em a passin' glance, they won't! Fine candles, too... This is a busy street—you'd think it would be a great place to set up shop. Plus, everyone uses candles to celebrate Dragonyule. I'm honestly surprised you're having so much trouble selling them. That's 'cause they all buy 'em from that blasted shop over there! Cor, but I'm useless, so I am... Nonsense! You simply need to persuade the people to buy from you by touching their hearts. How's that again? Permit me to give you a demonstration. Oh, and you should pay close heed to this, Euden. Touching the hearts of his people is important for a king, so you would do well to learn from a master. Friends! Alberians! Countrymen! Lend me your ears! AAAUUGH! You scared me! What's this all about? I'm busy! ...... Oy, why'd he go all quiet-like there? Did he get cold feet what from all the folks watchin' him? I think this is intentional—his silence is just making everyone more curious about what he's going to say next. This is what he meant by touching hearts... Have any of you ever witnessed true darkness? An inky black so deep that you cannot even see your own hand before your face? I have. It happened when I was driven from my home and forced into the wilds— and I will never forget the memory. Imagine it! Alone at night in a strange land, the howls of fiends in the distance... It is a horror beyond description! *shudder* Ah, but to deny one's fear and put on a brave face would be tantamount to suicide, for admitting fear is vital to a long life. So what should one do, then? ...You there! I would have your answer! What, me? Um...I don't know? Ah! An excellent answer! To know and accept one's ignorance is at times equally vital if one wishes to see tomorrow. Well then, I shall impart the answer: What you should all do is prepare for the possibility that you may one day find yourself in that selfsame situation. One can never be too prepared when it comes to such matters. That is why your king recommends these fine candles to you all! If you always keep one in reserve, you need not fear even the blackest ebon night. Yeah, but I already bought a bunch of candles for Dragonyule. Yet is danger not present all year 'round? Would you truly squander your precious candle supply on merriment when the wolf is at your door? Do you neglect your own safety so?! So I say to you, prudent men and women who are gathered here—grasp this candle of safety with your own two hands! He's right! I'll take one! I'll take three! I'LL BUY ALL THE CANDLES! Wow! He's selling out as we speak! Xander's speech worked... Now raise your candles high and cry to the heavens: "Safety is in my hands!" Safety is in my hands! There now! That wasn't so difficult. Yer a wizard, so ya are! A wizard, I say! Now I can spend the holiday ringin' in the new year with me family! If you have time to be thanking me, you have time to get back to your son. He really wants to celebrate Dragonyule with you. I will! ...Huh. I guess that's that. Ah, but our work has only begun. Saint Starfall could never be satisfied with just helping ONE person! Ha HA!

Life-Changing Gifts

Being Saint Starfall is more arduous than I thought. We should stop for lunch in this fine establishment. That sounds like a plan. ...Hmm? Oy! Seasoning's a bit strong today, ain't it? T-terribly sorry about that, sir. Guess we're eatin' for free today! Bwaaa ha ha ha! Oh dear. This seems to be a gathering place for hoodlums. What're you lookin' at, fancy-pants? You wanna fight?! Oy, 'old on a sec. I'm thinkin' these two look right set in the pocketbook. Right then, lads! Best 'and over everything ya got, or there's gonna be trouble, yeah? You're either very conceited or terrifically stupid to be threatening me of all people. What'd you just say?! We're clearly not going to do as they say, Xander, but that still doesn't mean we should provoke them. Looks like you two need a little lesson in proper manners! Get 'em, boys! Urk... G-gots carried away, we did... Hmph. I knew you three were all bluster. Sorry for all the broken furniture, ma'am. Oh, don't you worry about those old things! Thank you very much for coming to my aid. You three churls should feel ashamed for threatening such a polite woman. All well and good for you to lecture us, Lord High-and-Mighty. Ah, I see you're practically quivering in delighted anticipation! Well, here it is: I will show you all a hell befitting rotten scum like you! But 'ell ain't no gift! Oh yes it is! Now, the three of you are coming with me whether you like it or not. ...We're leaving, Euden. Wait, Xander! First: tree-felling hell! You're going to cut down trees until your arms break! Then you will use that wood to make new tables and chairs to replace the ones that were destroyed. Now get to work! Eeeeeeeek! Next: cooking hell! YOU are going to practice cooking until you can make every item on this establishment's menu to perfection! ALL of 'em?! Gyaaaaah! Finally: forced-smiling hell! YOU are going to learn to smile in the face of any adversity! Eeeeeek! ...Erm, I mean, 'allo? Tee hee? Smiiiiileeee? Eventually, the many hells Xander inflicted upon the ruffians came to an end—and when they did... Welcome, good sir! Might I ask the size of your party today? Oh my! Such a polite greeting! One grilled fish, comin' right up! *munch* Wow! This tastes amazing! These chairs are so comfortable, too. They must have been made by a very skilled carpenter. Aw, you're makin' me blush... I feel ravenous! Bring me the daily special, and pile that plate high! I'll take another grilled fish, too! C-coming right up! I dunno what's goin' on here, but this actually seems to be...good? Yeah, and everyone's smilin', too. Makin' people happy feels nice! Sure beats havin' everyone loathe ya. I don't get it. We've been nothin' but useless at real work up till now. Right? One minute that rich bloke's makin' us suffer, and then... Ah, but this was my plan all along. That's incredible, Xander! You did an amazing job noticing their hidden talents. Those who have given up on living simply stop noticing their own potential. Take you, for example. M-me? You are highly dexterous—which I could tell by how you handled your weapon so much better than your friends. So ya had me make the furniture! And you were the one who told the owner the seasoning was strong, yes? Y-yeah... That means your tongue is capable of discerning even small changes in taste; it's common knowledge such people make excellent chefs. I 'ad no idea... That leaves the one who first tried to pick a fight with me. M-me? You have courage, which is something you need when serving customers you've never met... There are an unusual number of couples walking about town today. Do you think they're all out celebrating Dragonyule? Perhaps. Regardless, they all seem to be enjoying themselves; I don't believe Saint Starfall's support is needed here. Wait. Look at that man there. *siiigh* Ah, but he does appear to be in low spirits. My assistance is needed after all! Ho there, plebeian! Tell Saint Starfall what is troubling you, that he might resolve it! Heh, really? Thanks, but no one can help with this. Ha HA! You could not be more wrong! Nothing is impossible for me! Easy, Xander. ...Sir, if you don't mind talking to us, you'd probably feel better getting your worries off your chest. Oh, I suppose you're right. In that case, the problem is with a girl I like. She's come into my shop a few times, but she also happens to be the daughter of a wealthy noble. But she's not haughty or arrogant at all! She always takes a moment to smile at me and pass the time with conversation. A sure sign she cares for you! Do you not agree, Euden? Aren't you maybe reading a bit too much into that actual— Nonsense! The woman is clearly waiting for you to declare your undying love! A Present Fit for a King

Xander and the prince's eventful journey was finally reaching its end... We should return to the castle soon. But first, I have one more task to complete. What's that? You have served me well during this journey, and I intend to see you rewarded! Merely name a thing that you desire, and your king will see it done. I don't need anything. I'm just glad we were able to help so many people. Humility may be a virtue, but there is no need for it here. Surely you must want for something? Speak, vassal! Your king seeks to compensate you for your labor! In that case, all I really want is for you to keep doing what you've been doing. Explain this! Just keep helping me. That's all I need. Unacceptable! That is no reward! Is there truly nothing you want from me, however small? Look, I get where you're coming from, but I really can't think of anything. Look there! It's the traitorous prince! Uh oh! And all this time, I have been struggling to decide on a worthy gift for you—but I have finally thought of one. It's nice of you to put so much thought into it, Xander. What did you decide? Ha HA! To date, I have simply been lending you my strength—but from now on, I shall rise up and make you the supreme ruler of all! Our conquest is only just beginning!
