Dragonyule Fatherhood

We didn't celebrate Ilian festivals in our homeland, so this is all quite new. ...It would have been nice, though, to have a day set aside to spend with loved ones. Squeak! Hm? Of course you count as loved ones. Don't you worry. Yes... If nothing else, I should be thankful for the chance to celebrate the occasion with you both. Thank you for helping with the decorations, you three. Putting up such a large tree can't have been easy. Oh, it was no trouble. These two actually quite enjoyed the process. But if I might ask: why are you dressed like that? His Highness asked me to deliver presents as Saint Starfall. I shall be visiting the towns and villages nearby, so I thought it wise to try the outfit on before I left. Ah, yes. The patron saint of Dragonyule. His sleigh is driven by reindeer, right? Squeeeeeak! What's that? You two want to dress up for Dragonyule as well? I'm sorry, but I don't think they make outfits in your size. Oh, I'm sure I can whip up something. I've never seen a dragon Saint Starfall before. Well I'll be darned. Dragons delivering presents, just like in Ilia's day! Thank you kindly. Thank you, Saint Starfall! Well now. That went quite well, wouldn't you say? Squeak! Squeak! Are you dressed as a reindeer, young man? That's right. Ha ha, marvelous! And how lucky to be towing such sweet little Saint Starfalls. We're very fortunate to be visited by such kind and devoted dragons. Thank you. We're just happy to be of service—though I admit it warms my heart to hear you praise them. You said some unpleasant things to your father, which you know was bad. Yeah... But you see, the fact that you're aware of that means you're a good person at heart. ...It does? Very much so. So you should feel no shame accepting these presents. O-okay, but why are you giving me two? One is for you, and the other is for your father. You should give it to him and make things right. Squeak! Squeak! I-I... Okay! I'll give him this and apologize, right now! I guess there really ARE good dragons! ...What did he mean by that? That boy didn't say anything unpleasant to you, did he? Oh, thank goodness our little Saint Starfalls are safe! We talked for a while, but he was nothing but kind. Why? You see, the boy's father doesn't think very highly of dragons. I heard he's been raising his son to feel the same, which is simply awful. I see... His father goes beyond "disliking" dragons, I'm afraid. I've heard some terrible things leave his lips in town. He seems to think they "all need to be wiped out." Can you believe that?! Oh, it gets worse. Apparently they both belong to the dragon-killing Syrol tribe. Wh-what did you just say?! The Syrol tribe, dear. No... Are you all right, lad? You've gone deathly pale. (I know that name all too well...) (Those monsters murdered my tribe— along with Felyx and Fydon's parents.)

Those Who Despise Dragons

*pant* *pant* We're not being followed, are we? Squeak! I won't let anyone hurt you! (I know that name all too well... Those monsters murdered my tribe—along with Felyx and Fydon's parents.) Are you sure you're all right? Y-yes. But I'm afraid we must be going. More stops to make, eh? Take care! Thank you! Have a merry Dragonyule! (I need to get these two back to the castle, fast!) (Please let our journey home be safe. Please!) Squeak! Squeak! Huh?! So someone was following us after all... Hah! Dammit... My son said those dragons just had a reindeer with them, not some guardian! ...... What's that look for? We ain't here for you. Just give us the dragons, and you're free to go. Never. You know that means we gotta kill you, right? Do your worst, you barbarians! As an Aegis, I won't let any harm befall them! Aegis...? Why's that sound familiar... You won't have your way this time! I'll make you pay for the lives you stole! Oooh, I remember now! You're one'a them savages that shelter dragons in the mountains! I thought we slaughtered 'em all, but I guess we can finish that now! You monsters! Urgh... He's no pushover. If you see an opening to kill those dragons, take it! Got it! Why are you so intent on exterminating dragons?! What could they have possibly done to deserve that?! My tribe was peaceful... Why did they have to die?! And what of these dragons' parents?! TELL ME! HAAAAAH! Whoa! Squeak, squeak! Stay close, you two. I won't let them get you! Peaceful? Hah! Dragons took EVERYTHING from us—why should they be protected?! What are you talking about? Pfft. You know that dragon your tribe was protecting? It destroyed our village! What?! I'll never forget it. One moment we're livin' in peace, and then suddenly this huge storm blows in and crushes all the houses—along with everyone inside 'em. I looked up to the sky and saw a dragon, way up above the clouds. Didn't take me long to put two and two together! I told some people in neighboring villages, but you know what they said? That we were "unlucky" for bein' in a dragon's path! You asked me what dragons ever did to us. Well, what did WE ever do to THEM?! My people just wanted to live in peace, and now they're dead! I didn't know... This is the first I've ever heard of that! And that's why you decided to take revenge on us? That's right. When someone hurts you, you gotta make them feel just as bad. Or worse! We joined up with a nation that shared our ideals. It's like paradise. In what way? They're all about ridding the world of dragons! So now we fight with them. Wait... You don't mean... So Amane is from a country bent on exterminating dragons? That's right. Her village was destroyed by one, and she was the sole survivor. That she alone prevailed, despite her youth, earned her the title "Child of Miracles." Does the country you speak of support someone called the Child of Miracles? Heh. You did your homework huh? It sure does. But she doesn't actually do any fighting herself. That's...OUR JOB! Urgh! And anyone who gets in our way has a shallow grave waiting! Ngh! *pant* *pant* Squeeeak... Come on! Are you gonna dance, or are we gonna finish this? ...... (All this time, I thought our village fell victim to senseless violence...) (And thinking about people attacking dragons merely for being dragons filled me with endless anger...) (But if what they're saying is true...) (Then the injustice in their eyes is—) Gotcha! HAH! (My only concern should be their safety.) Squeak! Squeak! Wh-what are you doing?! Get behind me, please! Squeak! You're...protecting them? Why the hell...? Squeak, squeak! Huh? Medicinal herbs and bandages? We don't take charity from dragons! Squeak! Fydon! Felyx! Damn you... Squeak! Squeak! Squeak! Squeak! Keep your trash! Squeak! Squeeeak... Wh-what's up with them? Why won't they just give up? We're here to kill you! You won't change our minds! What has gotten into you two?! Squeak! Squeak squeak squeak SQUEAK! What? It's because you're Saint Starfall? Saint what now? Saint Starfall—the saint who delivered presents on Dragonyule. A pity play, huh? Spare me. It isn't pity. They're doing this because today is Dragonyule. What the hell does that matter? Dragonyule is a day to spend with those you care for. They just want to make sure you can do that. So even if you were responsible for the death of their parents, they want to help you. Shut up. SHUT UP! I don't wanna hear about my loved ones from the same kinda monster that stole 'em from me! ...... Squeak! Why didn't you move?! I understand your feelings. I would feel them too, in your position. But someone has to break this cycle of revenge. If we don't, it will only end up engulfing our children. ...... I'm not suggesting you put your anger aside forever. If it were that easy, the world would be a much brighter place. But just for today, can't you accept their kindness? Surely we can let our souls rest for one day. Squeeeak... ...Fine. What?! But they're dragons! We can barely stand, boy. If this gets us home in one piece, so be it. Thank you! Squeak squeak! Something about these two...it reminds me of my son. Maybe 'cause he's a kid too. Or maybe it's their outfits. What do you mean? He came to me the other day sayin' he wanted to celebrate Dragonyule. I don't know where he heard about it, but I told him there's no way we'd celebrate anything with "dragon" in the name. It became a pretty big argument. Then... I had a big fight with my dad. I said some really nasty stuff I didn't even mean, and... You're that boy's father. He told me he wanted to make amends with you. That's why he accepted Fydon and Felyx's presents. THAT'S where those came from?! *sigh* Kids are so innocent. Accepting presents from the same creatures that murdered his mother... Parents and children see completely different worlds, it seems... Squeak...? As a father myself, I can no longer fight you. I don't want to make your boy unhappy. Hah! You were tryin' to kill us just a minute ago, and you think you can just call this thing off? ...Whatever. We'll let you off today. Truly...? I'm always gonna hate dragons. Nothing can change that. Yes, it really is a beautiful sight. Squeak! *sniff* Squeak! Squeak! Ah, forgive me—I nearly forgot I came to give you this. You did excellent work as Saint Starfall, so I brought you some Dragonyule cake as reward for your efforts. Squeak! *munch* *horf* Slow down, you'll make yourselves sick! There's plenty where that came from, so take your time. Squeak! Well, I'm glad you're enjo— Hmm? For a moment I thought someone was watching us. Did I imagine it? Squeak? Squeak! Wait, where are you go— Aaah! Er...Amane? Are you all right? Rrgh! No, I am NOT all right, thank you very much! They just charged at me for no reason! I'm sorry, I'm sure they didn't mean any harm. I... D-don't worry about it. Now, if you'll excuse me! Please, stay. Huh? You came to speak with us, right? You were just waiting for a good moment. N-no, I was just...looking at that tree! Even while they were being attacked, they never lost sight of their mission as Saint Starfalls. Fighting alone achieves nothing—and it especially doesn't make for a welcoming world. Adults are quick to tell children to solve their disputes without violence, but what sort of example are we setting? Wow... And the Syrols actually agreed? Amazing. I'm glad you all made it through that. And while it may not be my place to say this... Thank you for letting them live. They may be dangerous and unruly at times, but they are still my countrymen. Of course. No one wants to lose those they care about. Yes... I suppose you're right. It can be easy to forget that. But to make a world our children can enjoy, we must practice forgiveness, not hate alone. That's our duty as adults. You're absolutely right.
