The buildings here are quite different from those in Ylisse and Askr. Am I in yet another foreign world? I suppose I'll have to ask a local to know for sure. Gods, what is that?! This creature seems more interested in my death than my story! So be it. HAAAH! What?! More?! Blast... Where are they coming from?! They are fiends, monstrous entities spawned by the Other—and enemies of all who live. Hm?! You're wasting your time trying to slice through them all. With me, hurry! Wait! Who are you? You... You don't know me? But that can only mean— No, never mind that for now. I am Zethia, princess of the former nation of Alberia, and dutybound to protect this ruined world. This is our base, the Halidom. We're lucky to have made it back safely. For the few of us remaining, this is our last line of defense. What happened here? Thórr. Her merciless attacks have claimed most of the lives in this world. What?! She has come here, too?! I take it the two of you are acquainted? Yes. My allies and I were locked in battle with her in a world far from this one. ...Forgive me, I haven't introduced myself. I am Chrom, prince of Ylisse. So, you ARE from another world. That's the only way you wouldn't know me... What do you mean? Er...nothing. For now, let me show you around. This way. Why'd we have to lose Prince Euden to the Other? Why him?! Worse yet, we're left with that awful empress in his place. Life's barely worth living at this rate! Mommy? I'm hungry. Can I have some food? Oh, dearest... I'm sorry, but I've no food to give you. The fields are all ruined. Things seem grim indeed. Yes. These people have endured more than their share already. They were oppressed under the rule of the Other, and now Thórr too darkens their skies. They've abandoned any hopes or dreams for the future. I fear even their will to live is beginning to flicker. I've never encountered such pervasive despair... It was not always this way. Once, they knew true and lasting hope, in the form of my brother... But he was claimed by the Other. ...... I'm told those who fought beside him were felled in the same fight. And with our bravest and strongest defeated, no one remained who could challenge Thórr or the Other. Our world was darkened evermore. And yet here you stand, defiant nonetheless. I believe those of us who can still fight have a duty to do so. Well said. I imagine your people must agree— Graaaaaah! Eeee! Heeeeelp! More fiends?! We must hurry! Hyah! Are you all right? EEEE! Huh...? What happened? She ran off as if she'd just seen a ghost. Yes... She's not the first. Nor will she be the last. Though the Other currently occupies my brother's body, he once resided in my own—and I was a fearful tyrant in that time. Gods... How did you break free? I didn't; I was merely discarded. But while my actions are my own once more, my people have not forgotten the misery I inspired. They despise me universally. But there is nowhere else to shelter, and so they stay. I'm sure they recognize what you're doing for them. They must. Heh... You know, you remind me of my brother. Anyway, I don't need thanks or recognition. Their safety is enough. To that end, I will keep fighting to restore peace and hope to this land. Your devotion is admirable. Please, allow me to lend my blade to your cause. What? Why? You aren't even from this world. Surely you must worry first about finding a way home? We both seek peace for our people—and I won't turn my back on your plight when I'm already here. Episode 2

The Shepherds' First Battle

Chrom found himself unwittingly cast into a future
Grastaea mired in despair. After meeting Zethia
and resolving to fight alongside her, he came to
witness just how dire her situation had become...
GRAAARGH! Begone! *pant* We've barely made a dent in them! And yet if we don't stop them here... GRAAAAH! Princess! Whew... I made it, but only just. Thank you—and sorry for the trouble. I should be used to matchups such as this by now... No, this is far too many foes for one person. Is there no one who will fight with you? No. Not after what I've done... ...... (The attacks are getting fiercer by the day. She won't last much longer at this rate.) (I have to help her, somehow. Perhaps...) The Shepherds? Yes. I led a group by that name in my own world, dedicated to keeping the peace of Ylisse. I thought establishing a similar corps here might lighten the burden you bear. And though the volunteers were few, and some laughed when I explained my goal, I think we have the makings of a spark. If we use that spark to stave off some of the gloom that's fallen over this place, people will start believing in their own potential once more. I see... I WILL see this through. And as the Shepherds grow in numbers and strength, I hope your life begins to grow easier as well. Of course, we would appreciate your strength as well—but as a healer, not a fighter. Can do you that? If that is what you think best, I will happily oblige. But I doubt the people of the Halidom will welcome my heali—ah! We're under attack! I'll lead the charge. Can you support us from the rear? Y-yes. Please, be careful! Is everyone here? Good. This will be the Shepherds' first mission. You have prepared well, but be cautious. I don't want a single soldier lost this day! Now, let's protect the Halidom! Yes, Captain! Graaaarrrgh! Damn you! Ngh! Oh, no you don't! Yah! Chrom! We did it! Excellent work. Now, leave the rest to me! HRAAAH! We... We won? We beat those fiends all on our own? Yes, but the praise you've earned can wait. We need to take the wounded back to the Halidom. Princess Zethia will tend to them there. Z-Zethia?! ...Is that a problem? No one's gonna accept HER help. Sure, we all know we're only alive now 'cause of her, but... We can't trust her after everything she's done! If there was anywhere else we could go, we'd have gone a long time ago! I saw her, leading soldiers and fiends to put countless villages to the torch! I'll NEVER forget that! ...... Ch-Chrom, wait! Where are we going? To the castle gate. We have many wounded that need your attention. They may claim not to want your help, but I'd wager they value their lives more than their grudges. Still... Ack! Can you begin with her? Eeeek! No, stop! I don't wanna die! Do you still insist on this, Chrom? Yes. I know you won't hurt them, and you'll prove that to them here. *sigh* Very well. Please, sit still. This will only take a moment. You want me to sit still while you kill me?! I've seen what you do with that staff! ...Huh? I can feel my wounds...healing...? As promised. I can't believe it... I've never heard of anyone living after seeing the empress's staff pointed their way. Then I trust you'll make sure everyone hears your account to the contrary. Do the rest of you finally see the princess as your ally? Hurry now and bring the rest of the wounded. We don't have much time. R-right! Captain! We brought the rest of the wounded to be healed, as you commanded. Good. Then that brings our first mission to a close. Well done. The battle was tough, but things REALLY got dicey after. Everyone was pretty jumpy till they saw Zethia was actually healing rather than hurting. You're going to be fine. For now, just rest. She's like an angel... Is this really the same girl who supped on the screams of the innocent? I've never witnessed this empress myself, but the Zethia before you now seeks only to protect her people. She is a friend. That she put a roof over your head should be proof enough of that. I... You doubt her without end, even after witnessing her healing touch. How can you still think she means you harm? I... I don't know. I just can't get the image of what she used to be out of my mind. It may always be there. But I hope that from here on, you trust her enough to let her help you. You've all endured incredible hardship to stand here today. And to see the future of hope you long for, you'll need to work as one. The future of hope...

Connecting Hearts

Princess, please. You need to stay inside until your fever passes. I know, I just... I'm supposed to be out there healing the sick, and yet here I am, sick myself. It was inevitable, considering how hard you've been working—and with so little rest. Wait here. I'll bring you some food. ...You want me to make food for Zethia? I... I need to think on that. For HER? Nope, no thanks! Oh, I'm sorry, young man. I think I'll have to pass. The rift between Zethia and her people is as wide as ever... Perhaps I should just do it myself...? No, I'm no cook. I'd probably end up killing her. What's up, Mister Chrom? Hm? Oh, you're the pair I always see playing in the courtyard. Is something the matter? We got hungry, so we came to see if we could get some food. There's waaaay more food around now that we've got the Shepherds protecting us! I heard it's 'cause the fiends are scared now, so they don't come near our fields! Hey, are there any strawberries left? Yes, but... Would you mind if I saved them for Princess Zethia? She's not feeling well, and I can't cook. I'd thought strawberries might be a good solution. Wait, you can't cook?! But you're so muscly and cool! Heh, unfortunately there's more to cooking than that. Weird. Well, we can help you, Mister Chrom! Our mom's had us helping in the kitchen since we could walk. Really? That's very kind of you. We wanna thank Miss Zethia for healing everyone, too! We're not super chefs or anything, but we'll do our best! Ha ha, thank you. Shall we get started, then? ...... ...This is a disaster. I thought we had it in the bag when you started choppin' those veggies in the air, but... Guess we shoulda just kept it simple. We can't ask her to eat this... We have to do something. We've already tried everything, though... THERE you two are! How many times have I told you not to go wandering— Hold on, what's going on here? Mom! You're just in time. We were trying to cook something for Miss Zethia, but we messed it up! Oh, I'm sure it can't be that bad... Wait, did you just say it was for Zethia? Yeah! She got sick 'cause she was helping everyone out all the time, so we wanted to do something nice to help her feel better. And now that you're here, we're gonna knock it outta the park! Good thing, too, 'cause Mister Chrom is NOT a good cook... For Zethia... No... No, I can't possibly... What's wrong? Miss Zethia always helps us. She helps everybody! Why can't we help her now? I wanna help! I LOVE helping! ...You're right. I'll do my part as well. Goodness, I wish you two were this excited to help ME in the kitchen... Are you sure you don't mind? I know many of you still harbor animosity for the princess. That's true, but my children have helped me open my eyes. Deep down, I think we all knew Zethia fell ill because she was overworking herself for our sakes. We should be doing what we can to ease her burden, not shunning her. Right, ladies? "Ladies"...? Well, I guess I WOULD feel a bit guilty sitting out now. The princess deserves our gratitude. I'm happy to do my part in that. You're sure? Well, you have my thanks. And I'm sure Princess Zethia will be quite moved as well. Now, we have some cooking to do! Everyone, er...to arms! Is that you, Chrom? Please, come in. Miss Zethia! Oh! Wh-what are you two doing here? Do you still have a fever? Well don't worry, all of us worked together to make you something to help you feel better! You're always helping everybody out, so this is our way of saying "thanks a whole bunch!" That's very nice of you, but... What do you mean by "all of us"? She means everyone in the Halidom. Believe it or not, they've all been worried about you. Regardless of what you might have been before, you're their friend now. What? There's no way... If you don't believe me, just take a bite. Food this good is beyond me, I assure you. Y-yes, I will. Wow... It's delicious! Holy moly—it's so good she's actually crying! Ha ha... You have no idea how happy this makes me. Hee hee! Yay! I'm gonna go tell everyone! Gods, I wish I had that kind of energy... I didn't expect to be moved to tears... Forgive me. You must think me weak. Nonsense. My younger sister cries more than most, but she's among the strongest people I know. I think it's a waste to stifle your emotions, especially the good ones. Heh... Your sister sounds lovely. I would be honored to meet her someday. Perhaps you might, so long as hope continues to bloom in this world. Maybe so. At the very least, this meal has made me believe the future I long for may not be completely out of reach. I know this gesture doesn't mean I'm forgiven for everything I did as the Empress. But I want to think it means that my efforts since then have reached them in some small way. That it wasn't all for nothing... Of course it wasn't. Everything you've done —everything we're DOING—it's all making a future of hope. Each step along the way helps us better understand and support each other going forward. So let's keep going, Zethia. Finding Hope

You want to embark on a mission beyond the Halidom? That's right. Princess Zethia told us of a facility built to study other worlds. She said they were researching how to close the rifts between worlds. Yes, until the facility fell under attack. Most everything inside it was destroyed. The chances of finding anything useful are sadly quite slim. They could be as slim as string, but that doesn't change anything! A chance is a chance! Captain, you told us we needed to band together to forge a brighter future. Well, we put our heads together, and we decided that right now this is our best shot! Hmm... You're right that we need to consider our next move. Please, let us do this! Closing the rifts between worlds would be a sizable boon... Very well. We shall strike out for that facility—on the condition that each of you returns alive. Understood? Yes, Captain! Several days later...
This place has certainly seen better days. You're sure this is the facility? Yes. If memory serves, there should be a secret vault deep inside. We may well be walking into untold danger. Please, be careful. Everyone, get down! Rrraaaaaagh! What is that?! It's a modified fiend! I didn't think they'd still be here... We need to get out of here! What?! We can't just run out empty-handed now! Leave the fiend to us. You focus on finding the info we came for! But— Nothing you say will sway them now. Don't worry, they'll have my support— now go! ...All right. Good luck, everyone! (There's as good a chance as not that we find the information we're looking for, but after seeing their determination I must leave no stone unturned!) (Please let me find something... We did it! Is everyone okay? We've two with broken ribs, and a few others with scrapes and sprains. Forgive me. As leader, I take full responsibility for all injuries. Come on, Captain, don't be daft! We were the ones who begged to come here. I just hope it wasn't all for nothing. Everyone, I've found something! What is it?! *pant* These are documents on the Uncanny Gate! You mean the gate that connects Askr with other worlds?! Most likely. 300 years ago, the Dyrenell Empire is said to have built a replica of that gate and conversed with royalty from another world. This is a record of the research they conducted to do so. If we use this to create a gate of our own, we could change the tide of our fate completely. The tears between worlds have destabilized this land greatly; with a gate we could get things back under control. We could save our world from ruin.  ! We fought hard and took our fair share of knocks... But it was all worth it. Yes. Together, we WILL realize the future of hope! Once we've seen to our wounded, we should make haste back to the Halidom. I think everyone there could stand to hear some good news. Yeah! Did you hear? Princess Zethia and the Shepherds found a way to save the world! Yeah! If it works, we won't have to worry about fiends anymore! We can play wherever we want! I wanna see what it's like outside the Halidom! I know, dear. And that means we need to support Princess Zethia's research. What do you say we go pick some fruit for her? Man, the hope around here is tangible! We can't let anyone wipe those smiles away ever again. We will defeat any foe who would interrupt your research, Princess. Of that you have my word. Not when the future we've dreamed of is so close! Leave the front gate to us, Captain. You go tend to the others! ...Heh. You've grown into quite the dependable bunch. Very well. I'll leave things here to you. See that you return alive! Yes, Captain! At last, you arrive. Thórr! Your will has gone unchallenged long enough! You have quite the penchant for resisting fate, O prince of Ylisse. But it makes no difference in the end. This world has already been judged. There is not a soul here worthy of becoming a heavenly hero. Now, feel the power of my divine hammer! No... The castle! This is but an omen—a prelude to this world's inevitable destruction. Prepare yourselves. It will be upon you soon. Rrgh... DAMN HER! I need to check on the others... Are you all right?! Ch-chrom... Save your strength. I'll bring Zethia right away. Hah... It's too late for that, Captain. Just let me...tell you what happened. Everything outside...just a diversion... Thórr came here, and her power...it was... We were...useless...
