- In Norse mythology, Fafnir was a powerful dwarf. The three Æsir gods Odin, Loki, and Hœnir mistakenly killed Fafnir's brother Ótr, disguised as an otter. In an act of revenge, Fafnir conspires with his father (the dwarf king) and remaining brother to hold the gods captive, demanding a ransom of gold. Loki gives them some cursed gold, and Fafnir kills his father so that he can take the treasure all for himself. He became increasingly greedy and isolated himself in the wilderness, where he turned into a dragon to guard his treasure.
