Episode 1

A Humble Mercenary

Graooowr! This thing just won't die! Yeah, it's rough all right! Euden! Cleo! Fall back! Agreed. A temporary retreat is our best course of— GRAAARGH! When did—?! No! ROOAAAAAR! Grah?! He... With one blow? That was incredible... I owe you a debt, sir. Thank you. *mumble* I'm sorry? BRING ME MORE FIENDS! THE THIRST STILL ACHES INSIDE ME! Well, he seems...intense. But just as amazin' as ever! Heya, Berserker. Been a while. Hrrm? ...Ranzal! I take it you know this man? Oh yeah, me and him go way back. How's life, buddy? The same. All of it, always the same. ...Sorry to hear it. Hey, any chance ya wanna come back to Euden's castle? Euden? That's a name I hear often these days. Could be ya find what ya been lookin' for with him. An intriguing offer... But I find it unlikely His Highness would want a stranger like me in his midst. If it means more allies, I'm all for it. Hmm. Surprising. You would accept a man like me so easily? How curious. If you will truly allow it, I would be honored to join your ranks. I am Berserker, a humble mercenary. It is my great pleasure to meet you, Your Highness. Please, call me Euden. But if I may, Ranzal mentioned something about finding what you seek. What is that, exactly? ...Nothing to trouble yourself with. It is a trivial thing of no consequence to any but myself.

LET ME FIGHT THE BEAST!

Elisanne, are you carrying all this food to the larder?

Elisanne: I was planning to take it there in a bit, yes.

Please, allow me. Manual labor is about all that I can offer, I fear.

That right there is exactly what makes Ranzal such a handful. He knows perfectly well what overeating like that will get him, but there he goes... Do be lenient with him. At times, mercenary work is as hard on the mind as the body—there are nights when a person wishes to forget everything. Besides, this is a good sign. If he's cutting loose, it's proof he trusts in the responsible friends who surround him. You've quite the silver tongue. But that's cold comfort for the responsible friends who have to clean up his mess. Huh. He's quite different outside of battle, isn't he? Another new friend? The Halidom is a lively spot these days. Yes. I wondered what sort of man he was. I'm pleased to see he's quite kind. Mmm. I think this conversation is over. I had best depart. What? Why? Is it true you keep a dragon here, Euden? Yes, it is. Why do you ask? ...Er, and why are you suddenly waving a sword around? LET ME FIGHT THE BEAST! You want to fight a dragon? ...Alone? Sorry, but no. That sounds like a good way for you to get killed. Then I will search out the beast myself! W-wait! Why do you stop me?! Why do YOU want to fight a dragon?! Because they are strong! Now, if you'll not tell me where the beast makes its lair, leave me in peace! Okay, this is crazy. I'm not going to sit around and watch one of my own people try to fight a dragon. Also, for the record, I NEED that dragon! So just calm down already. Honestly, if there's more to this that I'm not understanding, I'm all ears. Euden... No, I... What does fighting a strong opponent mean to you? I have to see if I can find the answer in the heat of true combat. WHAT answer? How to live. How to FEEL. I... Bah. Never mind. Even if I explained, it isn't something you could understand. I will retire to my quarters for the evening. My apologies for the disturbance.

The Thirst for Combat

GROOOAR! This...this one's tough... Rgh... Fall back, everyone! Back to the Halidom to regroup! Understood. We'll withdraw for now and... Berserker?! Did you not hear him?! ROOOOOOOOAR! Graargh! YOU BORE ME, BEAST! Berserker! Fall back already! We're retreating, Berserker. Now. Out of my way! I can still fight! Dammit! ...Change of plans, everyone! Fall in after Berserker! Keep him safe! We take the fiend out here! ...Let me see those wounds, Berserker. Heal the others first. I will keep. You're the worst injured of us all. Little wonder, after the stunt you pulled. I am sorry for the trouble. What's done is done. Now let's see those wounds. ...... A word, Berserker? About my performance earlier, I assume? My actions caused trouble for all of you. I apologize. You endangered everyone for your own selfish reasons. I need to know what it is about fighting strong opponents that drives you to such lengths. My life has been a string of battles. Combat is all I've known since childhood. Fight or be killed. So did each day go: Fight. Win. Survive. By the time I was old enough to question this path, I was already broken. Surely that's being harsh. I only feel alive when fighting the strong. And so, I seek them endlessly. If that pursuit ends in my own death, I'll have no regrets. But if I brought harm to you or the others... Very well. I will leave the Halidom. Now I understand why he tried to fight a dragon. I can't keep indulging him, but I also don't want him to leave... So I guess my answer is clear.

A Rush of Life

For you are a good man at heart. But what I seek is a duel to the death, and so I must decline. If we were to fight, I would not hold back. And as you are now...you would die. ...... But I thank you for your kindness just the same. Come, let us return to the castle. You're right. I'm no match for you now. But what if I became a dragon? Do not toy with me, I beg of you. I would never do that. Stay sharp, or it will be you who dies. Now come at me with all you've got! Nnngh! ...Heh heh. Aaaah ha ha ha ha! Most amusing! You're on, Euden! Prepare yourself! RRROOOOOAR! *huff* *pant* Well, Berserker? *gasp* *heave* I experienced it clearly... This is what it means...to feel alive! Good. Then anytime you need a reminder, I will be your opponent. Just stay here with us. Heh heh heh. Euden... You are a strong man. You must be joking. I was barely a match for you even after shapeshifting into a dragon. That's not the sort of strength I meant. I was... Never mind. You're the first who's ever gone this far for a battle-crazed fool like me. You have my thanks.

A Sword Swung for Another

They're...too many! Don't chase them! Fight back any that pursue us as we fall back to the Halidom! Euden! Do not let your concern for others keep you from watching your own back. Yikes, that was close. Thanks. I know you won't be happy about this, but we need to retreat. Agreed. Our men haven't the energy left to continue the fight. What? I mean, yes, I agree completely. I just expected more of a fight from you. Do not worry about me. Come! We move! Thank you for earlier, Berserker. For agreeing to retreat, I mean. It was the only wise course of action. Nothing to merit thanks. ...You thought I would chase after the fiends alone? Well... I mean... Maybe? It's fine. I've earned every bit of my reputation. I know better than any how obsessed with battle I am. But you're more than just that, Berserker. That doesn't define you. Ah, but it does. Kill...or be killed. Only as I walk this razor's edge do I feel alive. I'm aware it isn't normal. I've seen it in the eyes of those who abandoned me after seeing my mad smile in the thick of combat. That must have been hard. But you were different. You did not push me away. You accepted me. You even became a dragon to indulge me. Allow me to properly thank you once more. I did what any friend would. Becoming a dragon? Hardly. You're strong of heart. That strength has moved me...and made me want to dedicate my blade to you. Truly? Yes. That was why protecting you and retreating took priority over my own desire to stay and fight today. It has been years since I last wielded this sword for another. And perhaps if I remain at your side, in time... Well, perhaps I'll learn to feel alive outside of combat as well. I hope that day comes soon. And know that I'll do all I can to help. I don't expect any miracles overnight. Perhaps you were the only thing that allowed me to let those fiends go. Knowing that back at the castle I could fight you in dragon form at any time.
