A Humble Mercenary
Fiend: Graooowr!
Euden: This thing just won't die!
Ranzal: Yeah, it's rough all right!
Ranzal: Euden! Cleo! Fall back!
Cleo: Agreed. A temporary retreat is our best course of—
Fiend: GRAAARGH!
Cleo: When did—?! No!
Berserker: ROOAAAAAR!
Fiend: Grah?!
Cleo: He... With one blow?
Euden: That was incredible...
Cleo: I owe you a debt, sir. Thank you.
Berserker: *mumble*
Cleo: I'm sorry?
Berserker: BRING ME MORE FIENDS!
Berserker: THE THIRST STILL ACHES INSIDE ME!
Euden: Well, he seems...intense.
Ranzal: But just as amazin' as ever!
Ranzal: Heya, Berserker. Been a while.
Berserker: Hrrm? ...Ranzal!
Euden: I take it you know this man?
Ranzal: Oh yeah, me and him go way back. How's life, buddy?
Berserker: The same. All of it, always the same.
Ranzal: ...Sorry to hear it.
Ranzal: Hey, any chance ya wanna come back to Euden's castle?
Berserker: Euden? That's a name I hear often these days.
Ranzal: Could be ya find what ya been lookin' for with him.
Berserker: An intriguing offer... But I find it unlikely His Highness would want a stranger like me in his midst.
Euden: If it means more allies, I'm all for it.
Berserker: Hmm. Surprising.
Berserker: You would accept a man like me so easily?
Berserker: How curious.
Berserker: If you will truly allow it, I would be honored to join your ranks.
Berserker: I am Berserker, a humble mercenary. It is my great pleasure to meet you, Your Highness.
Euden: Please, call me Euden.
Euden: But if I may, Ranzal mentioned something about finding what you seek. What is that, exactly?
Berserker: ...Nothing to trouble yourself with.
Berserker: It is a trivial thing of no consequence to any but myself.
LET ME FIGHT THE BEAST!
Berserker: Elisanne, are you carrying all this food to the larder?
Elisanne: I was planning to take it there in a bit, yes.
Berserker: Please, allow me. Manual labor is about all that I can offer, I fear.
Elisanne: Oh, it's really not a problem, but... Well, if you insist, then thank you. That would be very helpful.
Cleo: That right there is exactly what makes Ranzal such a handful.
Cleo: He knows perfectly well what overeating like that will get him, but there he goes...
Berserker: Do be lenient with him.
Berserker: At times, mercenary work is as hard on the mind as the body—there are nights when a person wishes to forget everything.
Berserker: Besides, this is a good sign.
Berserker: If he's cutting loose, it's proof he trusts in the responsible friends who surround him.
Cleo: You've quite the silver tongue.
Cleo: But that's cold comfort for the responsible friends who have to clean up his mess.
Euden: Huh. He's quite different outside of battle, isn't he?
Midgardsormr: Another new friend? The Halidom is a lively spot these days.
Euden: Yes. I wondered what sort of man he was. I'm pleased to see he's quite kind.
Midgardsormr: Mmm. I think this conversation is over. I had best depart.
Euden: What? Why?
Berserker: Is it true you keep a dragon here, Euden?
Euden: Yes, it is.
Euden: Why do you ask? ...Er, and why are you suddenly waving a sword around?
Berserker: LET ME FIGHT THE BEAST!
Euden: You want to fight a dragon? ...Alone?
Euden: Sorry, but no. That sounds like a good way for you to get killed.
Berserker: Then I will search out the beast myself!
Euden: W-wait!
Berserker: Why do you stop me?!
Euden: Why do YOU want to fight a dragon?!
Berserker: Because they are strong!
Berserker: Now, if you'll not tell me where the beast makes its lair, leave me in peace!
Euden: Okay, this is crazy.
Euden: I'm not going to sit around and watch one of my own people try to fight a dragon. Also, for the record, I NEED that dragon!
Euden: So just calm down already.
Euden: Honestly, if there's more to this that I'm not understanding, I'm all ears.
Berserker: Euden... No, I...
Euden: What does fighting a strong opponent mean to you?
Berserker: I have to see if I can find the answer in the heat of true combat.
Euden: WHAT answer?
Berserker: How to live. How to FEEL. I... Bah. Never mind.
Berserker: Even if I explained, it isn't something you could understand.
Berserker: I will retire to my quarters for the evening. My apologies for the disturbance.
The Thirst for Combat
Fiend: GROOOAR!
Ranzal: This...this one's tough...
Euden: Rgh... Fall back, everyone! Back to the Halidom to regroup!
Cleo: Understood. We'll withdraw for now and... Berserker?! Did you not hear him?!
Berserker: ROOOOOOOOAR!
Fiend: Graargh!
Berserker: YOU BORE ME, BEAST!
Euden: Berserker! Fall back already!
Cleo: We're retreating, Berserker. Now.
Berserker: Out of my way! I can still fight!
Euden: Dammit! ...Change of plans, everyone! Fall in after Berserker! Keep him safe!
Euden: We take the fiend out here!
Cleo: ...Let me see those wounds, Berserker.
Berserker: Heal the others first. I will keep.
Cleo: You're the worst injured of us all. Little wonder, after the stunt you pulled.
Berserker: I am sorry for the trouble.
Cleo: What's done is done.
Cleo: Now let's see those wounds.
Euden: ......
Euden: A word, Berserker?
Berserker: About my performance earlier, I assume?
Berserker: My actions caused trouble for all of you. I apologize.
Euden: You endangered everyone for your own selfish reasons.
Euden: I need to know what it is about fighting strong opponents that drives you to such lengths.
Berserker: My life has been a string of battles. Combat is all I've known since childhood.
Berserker: Fight or be killed.
Berserker: So did each day go: Fight. Win. Survive.
Berserker: By the time I was old enough to question this path, I was already broken.
Euden: Surely that's being harsh.
Berserker: I only feel alive when fighting the strong.
Berserker: And so, I seek them endlessly.
Berserker: If that pursuit ends in my own death, I'll have no regrets.
Berserker: But if I brought harm to you or the others...
Berserker: Very well. I will leave the Halidom.
Euden: Now I understand why he tried to fight a dragon.
Euden: I can't keep indulging him, but I also don't want him to leave...
Euden: So I guess my answer is clear.
A Rush of Life
Berserker: This is a curious place for us to meet. What do you require?
Euden: Fight me.
Berserker: ...What?
Euden: That's why I've called you here. Draw your weapon.
Berserker: Ah. I see.
Berserker: Of course you wish to help me feel alive.
Berserker: For you are a good man at heart.
Berserker: But what I seek is a duel to the death, and so I must decline.
Berserker: If we were to fight, I would not hold back. And as you are now...you would die.
Euden: ......
Berserker: But I thank you for your kindness just the same. Come, let us return to the castle.
Euden: You're right. I'm no match for you now.
Euden: But what if I became a dragon?
Berserker: Do not toy with me, I beg of you.
Euden: I would never do that.
Euden: Stay sharp, or it will be you who dies. Now come at me with all you've got!
Berserker: Nnngh!
Berserker: ...Heh heh. Aaaah ha ha ha ha!
Berserker: Most amusing!
Berserker: You're on, Euden! Prepare yourself!
Berserker: RRROOOOOAR!
Euden: *huff* *pant* Well, Berserker?
Berserker: *gasp* *heave* I experienced it clearly... This is what it means...to feel alive!
Euden: Good.
Euden: Then anytime you need a reminder, I will be your opponent.
Euden: Just stay here with us.
Berserker: Heh heh heh. Euden... You are a strong man.
Euden: You must be joking.
Euden: I was barely a match for you even after shapeshifting into a dragon.
Berserker: That's not the sort of strength I meant. I was... Never mind.
Berserker: You're the first who's ever gone this far for a battle-crazed fool like me.
Berserker: You have my thanks.
A Sword Swung for Another
Euden: They're...too many!
Euden: Don't chase them! Fight back any that pursue us as we fall back to the Halidom!
Berserker: Euden!
Berserker: Do not let your concern for others keep you from watching your own back.
Euden: Yikes, that was close. Thanks.
Euden: I know you won't be happy about this, but we need to retreat.
Berserker: Agreed.
Berserker: Our men haven't the energy left to continue the fight.
Euden: What? I mean, yes, I agree completely. I just expected more of a fight from you.
Berserker: Do not worry about me. Come! We move!
Euden: Thank you for earlier, Berserker. For agreeing to retreat, I mean.
Berserker: It was the only wise course of action. Nothing to merit thanks.
Berserker: ...You thought I would chase after the fiends alone?
Euden: Well... I mean... Maybe?
Berserker: It's fine. I've earned every bit of my reputation.
Berserker: I know better than any how obsessed with battle I am.
Euden: But you're more than just that, Berserker. That doesn't define you.
Berserker: Ah, but it does. Kill...or be killed.
Berserker: Only as I walk this razor's edge do I feel alive. I'm aware it isn't normal.
Berserker: I've seen it in the eyes of those who abandoned me after seeing my mad smile in the thick of combat.
Euden: That must have been hard.
Berserker: But you were different.
Berserker: You did not push me away. You accepted me.
Berserker: You even became a dragon to indulge me.
Berserker: Allow me to properly thank you once more.
Euden: I did what any friend would.
Berserker: Becoming a dragon? Hardly.
Berserker: You're strong of heart.
Berserker: That strength has moved me...and made me want to dedicate my blade to you.
Euden: Truly?
Berserker: Yes. That was why protecting you and retreating took priority over my own desire to stay and fight today.
Berserker: It has been years since I last wielded this sword for another.
Berserker: And perhaps if I remain at your side, in time...
Berserker: Well, perhaps I'll learn to feel alive outside of combat as well.
Euden: I hope that day comes soon.
Euden: And know that I'll do all I can to help.
Berserker: I don't expect any miracles overnight.
Berserker: Perhaps you were the only thing that allowed me to let those fiends go.
Berserker: Knowing that back at the castle I could fight you in dragon form at any time.
Euden: At any time...
Euden: Well, perhaps not TOO often. Life-or-death struggles are pretty exhausting.
Euden: But if it helps you feel alive, that's a price I'll happily pay.
Euden: I'm glad to have you with us, Berserker.
Berserker: The pleasure is mine.
