Ranzal: Hm? Hey, Euden? There's some sorta fight happenin' outside the castle.
Knight: Hold on, Irfan!
Knight: I'm begging you—just stay with my unit a little longer!
Irfan: I told you when I started working for you, Commander.
Irfan: If I don't get the rates I want, I quit.
Knight: Y-you did say that, b-but...but...
Knight: Without you, we won't last long...
Irfan: Then you better cough up some cash.
Irfan: I only work as much as I'm paid.
Irfan: Hey! Is someone named Euden living in this castle?
Euden: That's me. Are you sure you want to leave things as they are with that knight?
Irfan: Oh yeah, I'm done with that charity case.
Irfan: But that's not why I'm here. Name's Irfan, and I'm a mercenary. You hiring?
Euden: Well, we could always use more capable fighters, but—
Irfan: Then it's your lucky day! I'm pretty damn capable, if I do say so myself.
Irfan: I can take down entire legions on my own—so long as I'm fairly compensated.
Ranzal: He ain't lyin'.
Ranzal: I've heard'a this guy. He's famous— the best of the best.
Euden: I see...
Euden: Well, I'd love to have someone of your talent in my ranks, but—
Irfan: Right then; it's settled! Just gotta negotiate terms of payment.
Euden: Er, I was getting to that. The thing is—
Irfan: You're a prince of Alberia, aren't you?
Irfan: I bet all the knights in your employ are already filthy rich.
Irfan: Hiring me was the right choice.
Irfan: You pay me, and I'll swear undying fealty to you.
Irfan: I'll do anything you ask, so long as you ask with sweet, sweet cash.
Irfan: And considering you got all the cash in the world, there isn't anything I won't—
Euden: Except I don't. Have all the cash in the world, that is. My pockets are running rather shallow as of late.
Irfan: What? What are you saying? Are you a prince or not?!
Euden: I am...
Euden: But unlike my siblings, I don't have any territories to call my own, so I don't have much of an income to speak of...
Irfan: You...you gotta be kidding me!
Irfan: Fine, then. Forget it.
Irfan: I'll go back to my current benefactor and...
Irfan: ...And do nothing, because I just quit! Aw, damn it all!
Euden: Er, I'm sorry?
Euden: But you can still join us if you'd like.
Irfan: I don't... Wait.
Irfan: You may be broke now, but you ARE a prince... And that means you might become king one day!
Irfan: Okay. Fine. I'll join you.
Irfan: Normally I never let anyone defer payment, but I'll make an exception for you. You can pay me once you're king.
Euden: Are you sure?
Irfan: Yeah. Besides, that last guy doesn't have any money and he never will.
Irfan: Just remember, I don't work for free.
Irfan: When the bill comes due, it'll be steep.
Irfan: After all, how much I work depends on how much I get paid.
The Irfan Way
Ranzal: Those plains up there look ripe for an ambush, Euden.
Euden: You're right. Though I don't know how we'll avoid passing through them...
Irfan: If the enemy is preparing to ambush us, they'll be waiting on the other side. Just...there. In the shadow of those trees.
Euden: How do you know?
Irfan: I've seen this tactic a million times.
Irfan: Just a glance tells me all I need to know.
Irfan: If we want to be certain, we ought to send someone to scout ahead.
Euden: Would you go? You're the most qualified.
Irfan: No.
Euden: What?
Irfan: Scouts have to put their lives on the line.
Irfan: And you haven't paid me enough yet for me to risk my life.
Euden: I suppose that's true... I've barely been able to pay you anything.
Elisanne: This is hardly the time to be discussing money, Irfan.
Elisanne: We are all in danger if we don't gather intelligence on the enemy.
Irfan: Like I don't know that.
Irfan: All I'm saying is, you better get rich quick if you want me to risk my life for you.
Elisanne: Money, money, money—that is all you ever think about!
Elisanne: Have you no sense of loyalty to your benefactor?
Irfan: I'm a mercenary. We work for money. That's pretty much the end of it.
Irfan: Knights are the saps who work for loyalty.
Elisanne: Why, you insolent—
Euden: It's all right, Elisanne.
Euden: I'm the one at fault for not being able to pay enough.
Euden: Here—I'll be the scout.
Irfan: Don't be stupid, Euden!
Irfan: I can't have my benefactor die on me!
Elisanne: He's right! You must give more thought to those who rely on you!
Euden: I-it was just a suggestion...
Elisanne: Honestly... All right, there is no other option; I shall be the scout.
Elisanne: Wait here, Your Highness.
Irfan: Approach from the right of the trees.
Irfan: They likely won't have as many eyes there.
Elisanne: You say you do not work without pay, yet you give me advice?
Irfan: I've been paid enough for a bit of consulting, at least.
Irfan: I do exactly as much as I'm paid. Not a hair more, not a hair less.
Elisanne: Hmph. Very well. The right side it is...
Euden: Why ARE you so fixated on money, Irfan?
Irfan: I have to be, since you of the upper crust live without a thought for it.
Irfan: Greed is the only way drifters like me survive.
Tradition and Ambition
Euden: The sun's setting...
Euden: I had hoped to return to the castle before dark, but that's looking unlikely.
Irfan: Well, you can forget about camping in this wilderness. It's way too dangerous.
Irfan: There's a town nearby. I'll take you there.
Elisanne: At last, you start to think of those outside of yourself!
Irfan: Oh, don't worry. I'm adding it to your bill.
Elisanne: Tch... Of course... It was foolish of me to expect better of you...
Ranzal: Oof, my blade has seen better days... I'm gonna go find someone to sharpen it.
Irfan: There's a blacksmith off the main thoroughfare. I'd go there.
Irfan: It's a little pricier than the others, but well worth it.
Elisanne: I will go fetch us food and water for tomorrow, Euden.
Irfan: You'll find everything you need at the stalls in the back alleyway.
Irfan: They'll be open even at this time of night, and you won't find fresher fruit anywhere.
Euden: You certainly know a lot about this town, Irfan. Do you come here often?
Irfan: I guess.
Irfan: My people own no land, but they come here to peddle their wares.
Irfan: Mostly meat and furs they get from hunting. Then they use the money to buy weapons or medicine.
Irfan: We've relied on this town for a long time.
Euden: Your people are nomads?
Euden: That must be difficult. You said this region was dangerous, right?
Euden: And the number of fiends is growing, so being outside isn't safe.
Irfan: Well... Yeah.
Irfan: Fiend attacks have made our numbers dwindle over the years.
Euden: Wouldn't it be best to take refuge in a town somewhere? Even for a short while?
Irfan: Yeah. I think it would.
Irfan: But my people are too proud. They'd never accept protection from a foreign land.
Irfan: They'd choose death before letting anyone else shield them.
Irfan: ...We've always been like that.
Irfan: I would never outright tell them to swallow their pride, but there's also no reason for them to let tradition be their ruin.
Irfan: I hate how old-fashioned they are, so I try to open myself up to new experiences as much as I can. Change things up.
Irfan: Leaving my people to live on my own, getting fancy new duds, taking part in whatever craze is sweeping the capital...
Irfan: But no matter how much I've changed, my people are still the same.
Irfan: And since I'm our leader's eldest son, I can't exactly abandon them.
Euden: You must worry about them constantly...
Euden: There has to be some way for your people to live without fear.
Irfan: The way I see it, there can't NOT be.
Irfan: I wanna build them a town of their own. One where they call the shots.
Irfan: If they owned the place, I know they'd agree to live there.
Irfan: But you need a lot of cash to build something like that...
Euden: Is that why you're always so concerned about money?
Irfan: I've been rambling on for too long. Forget I said anything.
Euden: All right...
Euden: If you don't want to tell me, that's fine.
Euden: Just let me say this:
Euden: the fact that you're fighting for your people really is wonderful.
Irfan: Wh-what part of ＂forget I said anything＂ didn't you understand?!
More Precious Than Money
Ranzal: *pant* *pant* Did...did we get 'em all?
Elisanne: I believe so... But we cannot rest easy yet.
Elisanne: If we keep running without knowing where the enemy is, they will soon corner us.
Elisanne: We must send someone to scout the enemy's location, Euden.
Elisanne: I shall do—
Euden: Irfan, can we count on you?
Elisanne: You want to send Irfan?
Elisanne: I admit it would be helpful if he agreed, but you know he will not!
Irfan: She's right. I don't do anything I'm not paid to do.
Irfan: If you need a scout, ask someone el—
Euden: It's true—I don't have money to pay you.
Euden: But one day, I'll have my own kingdom.
Euden: And when that time comes, I could give part of that domain to you, Irfan.

Euden: You either believe me capable of claiming my own kingdom, or you don't.

Irfan: I'll do it. Scouting never takes me long.
Elisanne: Are you serious, Irfan?
Irfan: I told you before: normally I never let anyone defer payments.
Irfan: But I trust you to keep your word.
Elisanne: What's going on, Euden?
Euden: I just promised him something more precious than money, that's all.
Irfan: I'm back. Wanna know what I found?
Elisanne: Already? That was almost too fast...
Irfan: I produce results to match the payment.
Irfan: That's just how I operate. Don't worry.
Irfan: Anyway, there are four enemies for each one of us.
Irfan: They've already started to surround us, but their formation is incomplete.
Irfan: Their net has plenty of holes to the south.
Irfan: If we all head that way, we should be able to break out of their grasp with ease.
Ranzal: There's the mercenary I'd heard so much about.
Euden: I knew sending Irfan was the right call.
Ranzal: We ain't safe yet, Euden.
Ranzal: Can't relax until we're outta this trap.
Irfan: Not true. Relax if you want, Prince Euden.
Irfan: You've got me to protect you.
Irfan: After all, the payment you promised is worth at least that much.
Irfan: Now let's get going!
You Get What You Pay For
Irfan: Prince Euden, do you have a moment? We need to talk.
Euden: What's the matter, Irfan? You're not usually so serious.
Irfan: It's important.
Irfan: Before, you said you would give me land once you claimed your kingdom.
Irfan: You meant that, right?
Euden: Is that what you're worried about?
Euden: Of course I meant it—every word. I'm not the kind of person who breaks promises.
Euden: It might take some time before I can make good on it...
Euden: But I'm doing everything in my power to make sure I can deliver.
Irfan: I see. That puts my mind at ease.
Irfan: Still, you really are different...

Irfan: I normally never trust anyone who says they'll pay me later.
Irfan: Most of the time they feed me some line, like...
Irfan: ＂I'll pay you when I make it big, so it's part of your job to help me succeed,＂ and they try to get me to work for free like that.
Irfan: But not you. You said you'd do everything in your power.
Irfan: You don't expect me to keep your promise for you; you're gonna do that on your own.
Euden: For as much as you're helping me, isn't it only right that I help you equally in return?
Irfan: You would think so, but none of my prior benefactors would agree.
Irfan: I've never worked for anyone like you before.
Irfan: That's why I know I can trust you when you say you'll pay me when you can.
Euden: Can I ask you something?
Euden: Why is it you only talk about money, and never what you hope to do with it?
Euden: I'm sure there would have been plenty of other employers willing to help you out if they'd known what I do.
Irfan: Because I can't.
Irfan: If I ran my mouth to everyone, my people might find out what I was planning.
Irfan: And they would rather die than accept help from anyone else.
Irfan: Even if I am our leader's eldest...
Irfan: If they found out I'd been risking my life to earn enough money to help them, they would never accept it.
Irfan: But if the prodigal son just so happened to use a large sum of cash he acquired through sheer luck to build them a town...
Irfan: That would be fine.
Irfan: I don't just want to save their lives.
Irfan: I want to preserve their stupid, old-fashioned sense of pride, too.
Euden: I can understand that.
Irfan: So, Prince Euden.
Irfan: As a descendant of such prideful people, let me swear to you again:
Irfan: I will do whatever it takes to make sure your dreams become a reality.
Irfan: It wouldn't do for a leader's son to just twiddle his thumbs and wait for someone else to give him land, after all.
Irfan: I've never said something like this to anyone before, but...I hope you'll fight beside me to realize our shared vision.
Euden: How could I refuse? I'm counting on you, Irfan.
Irfan: Don't you worry, Your Highness.
Irfan: You get what you pay for with me, and you've promised to pay me a lot.
