Circus Dagger Wielder Fritz Forget your worldly cares and let us welcome you to a world of dreams! But first, I—Fritz the Magnificent—will dazzle you with my splendiferous dagger-throwing skills! Those targets are miles away! Is he seriously gonna hit 'em? He does seem to be throwing from a fair distance further than normal. No matter the target or the situation, I never miss what I set my eyes on. Now watch as I hit yonder moving targets...with my eyes closed! No WAY he pulls this off! Oh, I think he will. I can't believe ya hit movin' targets what with yer eyes shut. It blew my MIND! Heh. That was nothing. You should— That was the worst circus imaginable! Hmm? I've half a mind to demand compensation! I am the daughter of a marquis, and yet was forced to mingle in the same area as some pack of slack-jawed plebeians! A circus this shameless should go out of business and make the world better for it! Damn, SOMEONE woke up on the wrong side of the world this mornin'. Want me to tell her where to cram it? No, I can handle this. Wait, Fritz! I deeply apologize for the distress our humble troupe caused you, madam. Pfft! Are you that dagger-throwing buffoon? You SHOULD be sorry! What kind of circus doesn't know how to treat nobility properly? A third-rate one, that's what! If I might be permitted an explanation, my lady, there is a reason for our actions. Oh, this had better be good. To me, you are as a star that shines high in the evening sky. The worlds we live in are so different that ordinarily I would not even be permitted to gaze upon your beauty as I am now. But when this once-in-a-lifetime chance presented itself, I knew I had to show you the finest show from as close as possible! Furthermore, as I felt myself to be performing for you alone, I wished to gaze upon your legendary beauty as I did so. As the box seats reserved for royalty are far removed from the stage, my plan simply would not have been possible with you in the more common seats. What? Y-you were looking at me? But...you couldn't possibly see me well from the stage... Ah, but I did. For you see, your beauty burned more brightly than even the lights which illuminate our grand stage. Still, I cannot more deeply regret the distress and unhappiness my selfish actions caused you. If you had enjoyed our show as I wanted, I had hoped to one day perform in your mansion or other palatial abode. But I see now that was never an honor a third-rate performer like myself deserved. In truth, thought your show was simply wonderful! I was just, uh, too proud to admit I enjoyed it so much. I would LOVE to have you come perform for me! Double-Edged Dagger

Raaaagh! It went that way, Your Highness! Hraaaah! Ugh! It dodged again! This is one fast son of a gun... Take this! Aaargh! Not again! It's going to escape at this rate! No it won't! Hah! Graaaagh... Daggers? Fritz! I thought you folks were taking your sweet time coming back. Glad I came out to see what was what. We owe ya one. That thing was too fast for any of us to handle. So that was the issue, eh? Well, glad to have been of help. The first blade stopped it in its tracks, while the second was a killing blow. That is truly impressive knifework. His aim really is something. Could someone help me with lunch? I'd be happy to. While I appreciate your volunteering, can you actually cook? You can see that for yourself. Where's the kitchen? Follow me. —The Windwyrm's Castle— This is some of our circus's famous stew. Care to give it a try? *slurp* Oh my. This is delicious! You know how I roll—no matter the target or the situation, I never miss what I set my eyes on. That includes the stomachs of the people who eat my food. Your cooking certainly backs that up. I know the others will love this. Good. Anything else I can help you with? Hmm... Might you give me a hand bringing in the laundry? You got it. You're very good at this. I expected you to at least be surprised at the amount of washing we have to handle. Feels like being back with the circus, actually. We take turns washing and cooking, so I'm pretty used to it. That explains your earlier stew prowess. What really needs explaning is your workload. You seem to do everything around this place. Oh, I'm used to it. I've always rather liked housework, actually. Do you two need a hand out here? Sure, pitch in! The more, the merrier. I'm not certain how I feel about making Euden do such work... Ah! The wind's blowing the laundry away! I got this. Hah! Ho! Hai! No! Your daggers are going to... *sigh* Wow! He stuck all the laundry to those trees! I think that's everything, right? It sure is! That was amazing, Fritz! Eh, it's no big. I'm always amazed at just how good your aim is off-stage as well as on. Well, I'm always practicing to keep my skills sharp. How's a guy who's always missing in his off-time supposed to have flawless aim when it counts? So I'm always focused on my accuracy. That makes sense. Fritz. Uh oh. That look's scaring me. Your work ethic and dagger-throwing skills are, admittedly, quite impressive. I'm also glad that you were able to prevent the wind from taking any of our washing. However... ...However? IT IS NOW FULL OF HOLES! Just because you can throw daggers does not mean they are the solution to every single one of life's problems! Now then! If you have time, I'd like you to mend the many, many holes you put in our laundry. You sure? I actually can't sew worth a lick. But with two of us on it, I suppose it won't take TOO long... I'm afraid I have to take care of cleaning the castle, so you will be working alone. Wait. All this? ALONE?! The fate of our clothes is in your hands. Ugh. It's okay, Fritz. I'll give you a hand. *sniff* My savior... Lesson learned. Next time I'll just run around and catch everything.

Tools of the Past

Make it shine, make it shine, make it shiiiiine... Now THAT'S what I call a sheen. You seem to be in a good mood, Fritz. What's going on? Oh, I'm just polishing my daggers. Gotta keep your partners happy! The weather's great, my daggers are nice and sharp... That's enough to make a man wanna sing, don't you think? I suppose so. Mind if I take a look at your partners there? Help yourself. Wow, you really do take good care of these. They're basically my life—they've sure saved it plenty of times. I imagine your skill with these daggers is reflected in that meticulous care. I was always told that a first-rate warrior takes good care of their weapon. Couldn't agree more. Keeping your stuff in good order is part of being a pro. There's nothing more sad than blaming your tools when you mess up. I guess that makes you the pro's pro when it comes to dagger-wielding? I've never met anyone better. Heh. I'm sure you haven't. Hey, if you don't treat that like a joke, I'm gonna sound like a real blowhard. There's nothing arrogant about speaking the truth. You should be proud. I've had the pleasure of seeing you throw daggers in a variety of situations... And I've never seen you miss. Not even once. That's pretty amazing. I see what you're saying, but it's not amazing at all. If I was an ordinary performer like the rest of the troupe, I might agree—but I'm not. My skills are nothing to be praised. What do you mean? I learned all my dagger-throwing skills from my time as a thief. Oh. When your life is all about breaking in and not being caught, you either learn those skills fast or die before you can. Someone's knife has to hit first, after all. That perfect accuracy of mine is something I learned out of necessity. So do you get what I'm saying now? There's nothing to praise or admire in things you learn for your own survival. Hmm... Maybe that was how you used your skills before, but you don't do so anymore. That has to count for something. Heh. Thanks for sticking up for me. ...Kinda funny how this old life ends up rolling around, isn't it? The skills I used to hurt people are now being used to make them happy. I'm just a fool whose entire life is one big contradiction. If that's how you feel, why are still using daggers in your performances? Something must keep you going if you feel that strongly about your past. *sigh* You're sharper than you look. I do it because it's what I wanted. How so? After all the time I spent living in the shadows, the circus felt...dazzling. I still remember the first day I saw it. I was on the run from some guards, and ended up hiding in the troupe's tent. Annelie knew nothing about me, but she let me stay and watch the show anyway. That sounds just like her. I take it that's what made you decide to join up? That's right. She's really amazing. Heck, she took my cares away while I was running from a bunch of guards! Her actions were enough to make even a fool like me want to bring that same joy to others. But no matter how many people I make happy, I'm still tossing these daggers for myself at the end of the day. So that's why I keep saying there's nothing amazing about it. Sure there is! Huh? Look, maybe you learned those skills for your own selfish reasons, but you're still using them for good things now. Your skills captivate hearts and bring smiles to even the gloomiest faces. And that's a pretty amazing thing. ...... Something that benefits others doesn't become a bad thing just because you're also doing it for yourself. If anything, making yourself AND others happy is the best possible outcome. So yeah, I still think you're amazing— and nothing you say will change that. Well...thanks. I appreciate that. Still, guys like me just can't hope to compare to someone who lives an honest life from cradle to casket. I don't think that's true. I mean, you always say you never miss anything you set your eyes on, right? So why would your own LIFE be the one exception to that rule? Heh. You got me there. I guess I'll need to keep pursuing this dream for a while longer, huh? Just you wait. I'll get the life I want, and you'll be there to witness it.

You have a visitor, Fritz. Oh yeah? Who is it? ...Ma'am? Is this visitor here to see you, too? That's right—and he's got great news! Circus Ringmaster Annelie This man wants to become our patron! Is this true? Absolutely! I first had the honor to witness one of your shows the other day, and what a spectacle it was! My pulse was pounding from beginning to end! Oh my, yes. So deeply moved was I by what I saw, I decided I simply MUST do something to support your continued efforts. In particular, I was astounded by your dagger-throwing skills, young man. They are simply incredible! Er...thanks. I can certainly see why you have the backing of an Alberian prince. Knowing that, I couldn't help but have an idea... Would it not be an incredible sight for your royal backer to ascend the stage beside you? Me?! Indeed! I would love to see an act starring yourself and this dagger-thrower! If you can see this done, I will spare no coin or effort in your support! Huzzah! Huzzah, I say! What do you guys think? You two would be performing, so it's really up to you. I'm happy to do anything that helps your troupe. And I'm just a performer, so I'll abide by the wishes of our ringmaster and new benefactor. Then here is an advance payment. As for the details of the performance... Not too late to call this off if you're nervous, Euden. I seriously have no idea what that noble was thinking when he proposed this. No, I'm fine. I believe in your skills. Yeah, I don't think I'm going to miss, but... Oh, we're up. Let's do this. Thank you all for your patience! It's time for the highlight of today's show— a performance starring myself and Prince Euden! He has agreed to allow us to do the unthinkable! We will bind his limbs with ropes to that target over there... And then I will cut those ropes using my daggers! Should I miss by even a hair's width, the prince's very life could be in peril! I hope you all enjoy this nail-biting performance! (Oh, how I have waited for this chance! My assassins are going to take his life by throwing daggers from the shadows, and that fool will take the blame! Everyone will just think this was all a tragic accident! Aaaah ha ha ha!) Now...I shall begin. (Ah! That dagger came from off-stage!) Did you see that, ladies and gentlemen? A dagger that is not my own flew onto the stage from the darkness! It seems simply binding the prince is not thrilling enough. Hah! As such, I will sever the ropes that bind him while repelling the daggers thrown from the shadows! (That man was after the prince's life from the very start! Well, he's about to learn what I can REALLY do.) There! That's the last rope! Behold your prince, unharmed and free! Let's have a thunderous round of applause for our brave volunteer! Where did all those extra daggers come from, Fritz? Shh! Backstage, quickly! You're too exposed here! *pant* *pant* That damnable man! I can't believe he managed to repel ALL of those daggers! And here I thought you came to me BECAUSE of my skills. Eeek! Wh-what are you doing here?! So you wanted to kill the prince and make me your patsy, did you? I...I haven't the faintest idea what you are talking about, sir! You're a real scumbag, you know that? If you'd pulled that off, I would have regretted that show for the rest of my life. How dare you refer to your patron thus?! Oh, you can have your money back— I won't take a single red cent from a lump of human garbage like you! I've had enough of your smart mouth. Come, my assassins! Cut this fool down! ...... Wh-why is no one coming?! Because we captured all of them. It's time to answer for your crimes. What?! Prince Euden?! Were you asleep at the start of the show? A Stage That Dazzles

Sure is—and I owe it all to your backing. All right, time to get this show on the— This circus is BORING! BOOOOO! Blast! Haven't even started yet, and we've already got a heckler. Let's go see what's going on. I'm going HOME! I don't wanna see a circus! At least give it a try, darling. Is something wrong? I'm so sorry for how he's behaving. It's all right—but is something actually the matter, or is he simply having a difficult childhood moment? The show has yet to begin, after all, so there's no way he can judge its possible entertainment value yet. Of COURSE it's gonna be boring! Don't be so rude! Oh, I do apologize for my little snookums. I brought him hoping to cheer him up, but perhaps that was a bad idea. Has he been upset recently? Yes. You see, my husband—his father— passed away somewhat recently. I don't think I've seen him smile once since that terrible day. And you were hoping the circus might change that. That's right. But all we're doing is causing trouble for all the other customers, so we should probably leave. No, please stay! Our shows are the finest in the land; I swear we will make your son smile. Screw the circus! I'm not watching! No need to be like that. The circus is a delight! No it isn't! It might make other people grin like a bunch of idiots, but not me! I don't wanna do what idiots do!
