Chrom has a "skill reservoir" that can store up to 3 gauges' worth of SP. Each gauge costs 2,650 SP to fill.
Chrom's basic attacks will fill both his Skill 1 (Exalted Sword) and skill reservoir gauges at the same time.
Aether will use up 1 skill gauge each time it is used, with the exception of Awakening Aether, which will use all 3 gauges instead.
