Dragon Story Episodes
The Mercenary Prince
Roc flew through the sky, her injured
master on her back. She had been
watching over him since he was
young, and never considered that he
might one day die.
Known as the Mercenary Prince, he
was in reality a mere nephew of the
king of Alberia, and had little hope
of actually claiming the throne.
But the blood of King Alberius was
strong in him, and upon coming of
age, he successfully formed a pact
with a dragon, swearing to be
together for as long as they lived.
With no lands to inherit, he chose
instead to battle fiends, and spent
his life wandering South Grastaea
ever in search of combat.
To the people on the furthest reaches
of the land, constantly threatened by
fiends and unable to depend on the
capital's aid, he was a blessing—and
it was they who gave him his name.
Eventually, people began to wish that
he would become the next king—a
thought that was unsurprisingly not
received well by the current regent.
The royal family accused the prince
of working with fiends to seize the
throne, and after securing permission
from the Church to excommunicate
him, they sent an army after him.
Thus was the prince forced to fight his
own family. And with several dragons
on their side, it did not take long for
the royal family to secure victory.
The prince's death came from an
arrow to the chest—an anticlimactic
end if ever there was one. All who
saw the impact knew instantly that
it would be fatal.
Seizing their chance, the army moved
in on the dying prince—but Roc gave
a great roar and protected him with
her wings.
After softly kissing him, she took
him onto her back and soared into
the air as the powerless army
watched from afar.
That was the last glimpse mankind
had of the prince, and none know
what happened in his final moments.
None, that is, save his lifelong
companion.
The veteran warrior of a dragon flew
through the air, the dying prince on
her back. All was silence, for they
had left the hue and cry of battle
far behind them.
Suddenly, the Mercenary Prince
spoke Roc's name from her
back. But the voice was weak, and
she knew well that he would not last
much longer.
"I'm taking you to see Phoenix,"
said the dragon. "A wound like this
will be nothing to her—and if she
refuses to help you, she'll have my
claws in her neck."
"It's fine," said the prince weakly.
"Dying in a warm bed ain't really
for me, anyway. I've got no regrets
about how I lived and...I loved
fighting with you."
"I'm just sorry I couldn't honor the
promise that we made when we first
formed our pact..."
"I dreamed of seeing peace brought
to the continent...but it wasn't to be.
No matter how much blood we shed,
the end never came..."
"But even if I die, I'm sure that peace
will one day come...and I want you
to see it for me. I mean...you're
gonna live forever...right...?"
With that, the man breathed no
more, and Roc let out a great wail of
despair. The people below knew a
great hero had left the world, and
began to offer prayers for his soul.
Now, the Mercenary Prince is all but
forgotten, and the royals who fought
him confined to history books—but
the peace he sought has not come to
pass. How futile human dreams are!
But to such thoughts, Roc would only
say, "It's not over so long as I live.
I'll make his dream come true yet."
Those who seek the peace of the
continent would do well to visit her.
She is, after all, a mercenary—and
if you share the dream of her former
master, she will surely help you.
