The Magic Outfit

Hee hee hee! If someone told you about a mysterious world that could make your every dream come true, wouldn't you want to go? Hee hee hee! Well, THAT was awful. I didn't get enough alone time with my darling at all. And by "not enough," I mean I didn't get ONE SINGLE MOMENT ALONE WITH HIM at the Halloween party! Why does everyone have to love him so much?! Every other moment, someone was coming by to talk to him! Ah, well. I suppose I'll just have to hide in the fireplace and surprise him later. Hee hee hee! ...Hmm? What was that sound? You there! I don't care if you're a thief or a fiend—I'm in a VERY bad mood, and you are going to pay! Hee hee hee! Where IS this blasted thing? In here? ...Wait. I don't remember a room ever being here before. Huh? There's no one in— BOO! AAAAAUUUUGGGGGH! Hee hee! Got you! It's a fiend! Hey! I'm not a fiend! I'm the Halloween... Oh, never mind. Here. By way of apology for the scare, you can have this outfit. Oooo! A Halloween costume! Now THIS is my kind of getup. My darling's eyes are going to turn into little jackpots when they behold me in this! Hee hee! Have fuuuuun! Your every dream is going to come true. Huh? What? Wait, say that last part again! This is more than a costume—it lets you become a whole new person. Isn't that the entire point of a costume? Yes, but other costumes only allow you to pretend. This one makes it REAL. Like, let's say you're a dragon who's hopelessly in love with a human. Just as an example. H-how do you know about that?! Hee hee! That's my secret! Regardless, wouldn't you like to try living a different life with this human? Right now, he's a wandering prince. But what if he were a merchant? Or an artist? You might be enjoying an entirely different sort of life together! You mean this outfit will allow me to experience any number of different lives with my darling? Perhaps even a life where I was born human and we were happily married? Sure, whatever you want! Just throw that baby on, and the world's your oyster. Happy Halloweeeeen! And a happy Halloween to you too, spirit! What even WAS that strange creature...? No. No time for that now. I must focus first and foremost on this costume. I thought it was just a fancy costume for Halloween, but it is SO MUCH MORE! I must don it right away! Right then! Off to Mym's fantasy land! But which life should I choose first...? Ah! I know! What if the two of us were happily married and living in a house far from meddlers who seek to steal my darling's time like common time burglars? We'd be lovey-dovey until the cows come home! It's PERFECT! ...Goodness, look at this little cottage! Is this our new love nest? Er, did you forget your own house, Mym? Darling! Um, this may sound a bit silly, but you and I are...married, yes? Of course! You are my one and only wife, and that will never change. We've forged lives together through thick and thin in this poor and wretched land. Do you really not remember that? (I did it! Hah, all right. Now, let's get out there and spend some quality time in the vegetable garden! I'm sorry?! We live in the middle of nowhere, darling. We must grow food if we're to survive. ACK! (Hrrm. Well, this WAS what I wished for, but it's not quite what I was expecting.) (This imaginary world might be a tad more work than I first anticipated.) Let's split up and plow the fields, my love. Can you handle that bit over there? Of course I can. ...Hah! (Ugh. I've barely moved and I'm already tired. How DO these humans stand living in such weak flesh sacks?) (Nevertheless, I will persevere!) *pant* *pant* How are you doing, Mym? *pant* *pant* Almost done! Great! Let's keep working together! (I'm experiencing the same hardships he is... Oh, this is all so NEW!) (This must be what it truly means to be a married couple!) Thus did the two of them live happily ever after as husband and wife. Or so she thought... It's night, darling! Come to bed! Just a little longer, my sweet. These weeds are endless! There we go. Grow big and strong now, you little onions and carrots! Ugh! Why won't he pay attention to me?! I thought I'd be the center of his world if we removed people from it, but now his attention has been hijacked by produce! Oh no! Those bugs are eating my cabbage! Surely it can wait until tomorrow, darling? The moon is already quite high in the sky. I can't turn my back on suffering vegetables, Mym! We're the only ones who can save them! *sigh* It seems he can't help but rush in whenever anything is suffering. I realize he's like that in the real world, but I didn't know it would carry over here. We're a married couple now! He should love me above all others— INCLUDING root veggies! How am I ever going to create the perfect world where we are together? Should I wish for a world where he won't save people OR vegetables? Hmm, but if I do that, he's not really him... Oh, of COURSE! I just need to wish for a world where nothing ever suffers! Right! I'll dream up a world where the Shard is still intact and the country is at complete peace! It's perfect! In my next world, my darling will rule over a land where no one wants for even the slightest of things! And I will be his princess!

Episode 2

A Royal Bride

Hear me, O magical outfit! Grant me my royal wedding! Mym has obtained an outfit that shows the wearer any illusion they desire. For her second attempt, she chooses to be a royal wife. Congratulations on your marriage, Your Highnesses! Welcome to Alberia, Princess Mym! Ah, but this mansion is amazing! Will it be our new love nest? Of course. My father built it for us, after all. Aurelius built us a mansion? But he once tried to kill me! Er, but in a different world, so I suppose it doesn't count. Anyway, I assume your father is alive and well here, yes? He's not just MY father anymore, Mym. He's also your father-in-law, and it's important for you to address him correctly. Yes, I suppose he is that, isn't he? Hrm, this may take some getting used to. Heh. Well, you'll have plenty of time to adjust to it. For we shall be together as husband and wife for the rest of our days! I'm so happy to hear you say that, darling! (Thank goodness THIS version of him is actually paying attention to me!) (Now I can FINALLY have my ideal marriage without all that other nonsense.) Beg pardon, Your Highnesses, but preparations for the evening meal with your guests are complete. Thank you. We'll be right there. We have guests? My siblings are busy ruling over distant territories, so it isn't often we can all gather in the same place. I would have thought that to be rather obvious, Princess...Mym, was it? Why? That woman concerns me. ...Greatly. I'm so sorry, Brother. I'll talk to her later and make sure it doesn't happen again. ...... (I'm doing my best here! Why can't they all see that?!) (What does it even MEAN to be royal?!) And yet, she does seem to be the PERFECT match for you! Ah ha! Ah ha ha ha! I mean, who gives one whit about the seventh in line to the throne, anyway? ...... SAY THAT AGAIN, CHUMP! I won't stand for anyone making fun of my darling—ESPECIALLY YOU! Eeek! H-how dare you speak to me in such a way, you upjumped trollop! Oh, but these are sad times indeed when a base peasant like yourself can join our most esteemed royal family. I don't give a damn HOW base I seem, OR how "esteemed" your family is! If you were insulting ME, I could handle it. But I won't stand for anyone speaking in such a way to my beloved! Are you really so small-minded as to think you can mock him simply because he was born after you were? What rot! I'll have your tongue for that, churl! Being married to one of my brothers does not give you a free pass to do as you like. Perhaps you will learn this lesson after I have my father throw you in the dungeon! Hah! Of course you would run to daddy! What a sad, pathetic excuse for a— Mym, stop! There's nothing to be done! You just have to endure it. Darling?! I'm happy that you care about me enough to get this upset—I truly am. But the royal order of succession is absolute, and must never be mocked. Very well. I understand. ...I understand that even if I WAS to become your princess, I'd never be happy! To see you suffer because of me, and mocked simply because some idiot was birthed into the world before you were—it's too much! If being part of the royal family means I have to endure this kind of idiocy, then I want no part of it. *sigh* And to think I thought THIS world would be the one that worked. I've tried being the salt of the earth. I've tried being the nobility. What else is there to try? A merchant, perhaps? An artist? No, it's no good. If I can't adjust to the new life, I'll end up in the same predicament. What we REALLY need is a carefree life of ease. One where we go wherever the wind blows us! If we had true love, the two of us could go somewhere far away from all this. I see now... I see our destination... Wait for me, darling!

On the Road

If my darling and I can wander the world together, I will need for nothing else. Grant my wish, outfit of dreams! Make us travelers! Oh, we're starting outside this time, eh? Well, that DOES suit two travelers. Darling! I found you! Whaddya need? A-are you all right, darling? Did I anger you somehow? Nope. W-wait! What's going on here?! We're supposed to be two married travelers adventuring together! Married...travelers? Welp, call us whatever floats your boat. What is WRONG with you?! Nothin'. Always been like this. Hell, how else should I be, seein' as how I was abandoned as a child and forced to beg for coin in the street? (No! This isn't the darling I know!) (Is this because I wished for us to go on a journey together?) (Have I made him endure a terrible upbringing just for me?) Frankly, you're the one actin' strange. Don't tell me ya got a fever! Y-you're worried about me? 'Course I am! You're the only one what's been by my side all these years. Got through every hardship in my life 'cause of you, so I did. So if ya wanna say we're married, it's no skin off my nose. Oh, darling... (This version of him only has eyes for me. And yet, he's so different!) (Is he even my darling anymore?) (And what kind of a life are we going to end up leading here?) Raaaaagh! Take this! Haaah! Gragh?! (He's so strong! You can tell he's been fighting as a traveler for a long time.) One comin' at ya, Mym! Leave it to me! Oh no! (My weapon is so very heavy... Curse these frail human bodies!) Rraaahh! (It's going to get me!) Mym! Urrgh! Darling! Oh, you're going to PAY for that, you fiend! Haaaaaah! Rghhh! Are you all right, darling?! Fine. You? I'm fine as well, but only because you took the blow intended for me! Yeah, well, don't worry 'bout it. I'd rather be hurt than see it happen to you. Oh, darling... (This really IS him.) (He's gruff and tactless... But he's still the same kind, selfless Euden I know!) (I finally understand! THOSE were the parts of him I fell in love with!) (I won't hesitate any longer! I'm going to live out a happy married life in this world, with this version of my darling!) (And as I'm now a traveler, there's only one thing for me to do!) Raaahhh! Take this, you fiend! No! Not again! HAAH! Raaagh! Don't be reckless, Mym. Just watch my back. That's good enough. But I want to fight with you! Glad ya feel that way, but there's no need for you to be in harm's way. If you keep throwin' yourself at fiends, I'll be throwin' dirt on your head soon. But I'm fine! I'm a drago... (No. I'm not. Now I'm just a human being so weak that even an attack from a pitiful fiend is enough to kill me.) (Rrrr, this body is SO inconvenient! Why did I have to become human?!) ...Wait a second. I WISHED for it! This is all MY doing! What's wrong? N-nothing, darling. Then let's make camp before we lose the sun. Zzzz... *sigh* It's no use. I can't sleep. What do I want to do? How do I truly wish to be? All this time, I was jealous of humans. I thought that if I could be like them, I could marry my darling and be happy. That's why I chose to become human in this world in the first place. And yet, only my body is human— not my heart. I'm still Brunhilda the Flamewyrm— the proud master of crimson! Can I really throw away my pride if that's the only way to have a human heart? I don't know what I want here...

Kindled Resolve

In one of her imaginary worlds, Mym found herself faced with a dilemma: Did she want a human heart, or just a human body? All good, Mym? Ya look pale. Well, I suppose I didn't sleep all that well last night. Ya need rest. Let's find a town. All right. Thank you, darling. You're the only friend what I got. It's the least I can do. (He might not be the same person I'm used to, but he's just as kind.) (I want to do something for him. I NEED to do something.) (But what?) (I don't have my dragon power anymore; I'm just a human with no real redeeming features to speak of.) Hey, Mym! Get it together! Huh?! What's wrong?! We got fiends incomin'! Graaagh! Don't do anything reckless like last time! Ya hear me?! I won't. I swear. (I might have the heart of a dragon, but my body is still very human. I must be careful!) Hah! Haah! Graaaagh! Raaaar! Whew! That was close. Now take THIS! I think that's the last of them. (These fiends would give a dragon no trouble, but I can barely defend myself!) Nice work. Ya hurt? No, I'm...I'm fine. Good. Now let's see, which way was the nearest town... Allow me! It'll be easy to tell from up in the air—wait. Ugh! What're you on about? Just wait, I'll check the map. Er, yes. Thank you. (Well, I'm CERTAINLY going to be terrible at this. I've barely even looked at a map before, much less navigated with one.) Okay, I got it. Let's go. (I can't help him in battle OR adventuring.) (What reason even is there for me to be at his side?) Well, we're still on the road, but the sun is going down. Better rest here and eat. All right. (Too bad all we have is this tough, tasteless dried meat.) (I fear I've become quite used to Cleo making fancy dishes on our travels.) ...... What? Oh! Um...it's nothing. Er, but hypothetically, if I was able to cook, would that make you happy? Cook? Yeah, I guess I wouldn't really care one way or the other. You don't want to eat better food than dried meat?! 'Course I do. But cookin' ain't what I want from you. And what exactly DO you want from me?! Guess I just want ya at my side, is all. That's all? But I...I... It's all I need. Just havin' ya there calms me. Oh, darling! This is a tough old world, and sometimes it's hard to trudge through it. But when you're with me, I'm happy. (He sounds utterly exhausted...) I only really belong here when I'm with you, Mym. I only... That's when... Zzzzzz... Well, I suppose he looks a little more at peace now? That's something. He said he only feels like he belongs here when he is with me. It seems I am the only pillar of emotional support he has. Which means that so long as I am being indecisive, he will never be at rest. ...I've made up my mind! I will become human in body AND heart! I will forsake the life of a dragon! And as a human, I will do all I can to support my beloved! I'll learn to cook! I'll learn to read maps! I'll learn how to make these little stick arms better able to wield a weapon! I will lay down all that I am in order to see this relationship made whole!

Back to Reality

Afterward, she spent all her days at the side of her beloved as both his partner and a fellow traveler. Good morning, darling! I made breakfast. It's a hearty porridge, so eat up. Thanks. Ahhh, this is good. Warms me up from the inside out. Oh, but I am delighted to hear that! A girl I met at the adventurers' guild taught me the recipe. The secret ingredient is LOVE! ...Well, that and brown sugar. Anyway, there's plenty, so eat up! Good. I'll have more. That's the spirit! So according to our map, the town is this way. I see, thanks. I can always count on your directions. I travel a lot easier now thanks to you. Maybe, but you're the one who's always keeping me safe from fiends! Yep. Leave 'em to me. I will, darling! (I've never known happiness like this! Ah, but it is a joy to mutually support the one who you love most.) (THIS is what being a human married couple is like! THIS is happiness!) Be careful, darling! I'll protect ya! Forward! Haaah! Guh?! Graaah! Too easy! Haaah! Guh?! You make this look easy, my love! GRAAAH! Ugh! I can't see! Where is he?! Are you all right, dear?! RAAAHHH! Watch out! Aiieeeeeee! That was Mym! She couldn't have... Mym! MYYYYYYM! (One hit? One lousy hit? Again I bemoan these pathetic human fleshbags!) (It hurts so much. I'm...going to die... ...But...!) Flamewyrm? Mym, what the hell just happened?! I'm sorry for keeping this from you, darling, but I'm actually a dragon. Oh dear. It looks like it's time for me to say farewell to this world. Mym, wait! Where are you going?! I figured this would happen when I reclaimed my dragon power. But I didn't have another option. The thought of losing all the happiness I'd gained as a human was frightening, but the thought of watching the man I love die was far, far worse. Mym, no! Don't leave me! Myyyyym! No regrets, now. After all, I was able to say my goodbyes while you yet lived. Farewell, my other darling. It was wonderful to be with you. It feels like ages since I was last in the Halidom. And now that I'm back, all of my adventures feel like a dream. But I still have this outfit, so it doesn't have to remain a distant memory. If I was to wear it and wish again, I could experience other worlds anew. ...... No. I am finished with that. I am a dragon to the core. I fell in love precisely BECAUSE I am a dragon. No matter the odds against me or how mad the dream, I will continue on the path of a dragon who loves a human. But rather than indulging in dreams, I'm going to make my dream a reality! Happy Halloween, my darling. Despite how painful it can be, I won't try to be anything but myself, dragon and all.
